Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsFriday 3/6, 6:06 PM CT
Second baseman Jose Castillo had three hits in four trips to the plate Friday as the Nats fell to the O's 6-2.

Our View: Castillo seems to be labeled for the backup second baseman role, filling in for starter Ronnie Belliard when needed.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsSunday 11/16, 1:18 PM CT
Jose Castillo hit two home runs for Caracas of the Venezuelan Winter League on Saturday.

Our View: Castillo remained in the majors for all of last season, but he hit just .246 and could be hard-pressed to find similar playing time this season.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsWednesday 10/8, 7:46 PM CT
The Houston Chronicle reports that Jose Castillo was outrighted to Triple-A on Wednesday. Pitchers Dave Borkowski, Jack Cassel and Ryan Houston joined him in the demotion.

Our View: Castillo hit .246 with six home runs and 37 RBIs in 127 combined games for San Francisco and Houston last season. He came to Houston from the Giants on Aug. 20.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsSaturday 8/23, 8:07 AM CT
Jose Castillo has been recalled by the Astros, according to the Houston Chronicle. He was recently claimed off waivers from the Giants. Castillo is pleased to be a member of the Astros, and said, "I’ve always liked this team. I’ve always had a dream to play on this team. Thankfully, the opportunity to play with the team is here. We’re going to try to do things right and try 100 percent to stay here." Manager Cecil Cooper added, "We all like him at second, but I think he can play third. And we’ll find out if he can play shortstop. It will probably be at home. It will probably be midweek at home, but we’ll find out."

Our View: He is slated to start Sunday at second base, and may start at shortstop Thursday is place of Miguel Tejada as well. Castillo only hit .244 with the Giants this season, but 38 of his 96 hits went for extra bases (28 doubles, four triples, and six homers). His power numbers could increase at home while leaving San Francisco for Houston, and looks to be involved as a utility infielder down the stretch, meaning he is worth a look in larger NL-only leagues.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsWednesday 8/20, 2:56 PM CT
The Astros have claimed Jose Castillo off waivers from the Giants, according to the AP.

Our View: He will report to the Astros Friday. Castillo only hit .244, but 38 of his 96 hits went for extra bases (28 doubles, four triples, and six homers). His power numbers could incease at home while leaving San Francisco for Houston, but may not see enough at-bats to make him worth consideration.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsThursday 8/14, 10:33 AM CT
Jose Castillo has been designated for assignment by the Giants, according to the Arizona Star. Travis Ishikawa was recalled from Triple-A Fresno.

Our View: Castillo only hit .244, but 38 of his 96 hits went for extra bases (28 doubles, four triples, and six homers). He also scored 42 runs prior to his designation.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsWednesday 6/25, 9:01 PM CT
Jose Castillo had three hits and finished a triple short of the cycle for the Giants on Wednesday night. Castillo knocked in a run and scored twice from the second hole in the order.

Our View: Castillo has 22 doubles and is hitting .268, but without a bit more long ball pop, he has six dingers, he just doesn't warrant much attention in fantasy leagues.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsSaturday 6/21, 10:15 PM CT
Jose Castillo made his first start of the season at second base Saturday. Ray Durham, the regular second baseman, is nursing a sprained ankle and was used in the DH slot, according to the AP.

Our View: Castillo is already eligible in nearly every league at second because of how many times he played there last year, so this news doesn't affect many.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsTuesday 6/10, 11:03 PM CT
The Giants suffered the disappointing 10-5 loss to San Francisco this evening despite the best efforts from third baseman Jose Castillo . Castillo went 3-for-5 with his 19th double of the season, adding two runs scored.

Our View: Castillo has been solid in support of his team thus far, hitting .293 last month. He is hitting an impressive 11-for-34 through June thus far.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsSunday 5/18, 10:32 PM CT
Jose Castillo had two hits, two runs, and two RBI for the Giants on Sunday in his new spot in the order, second.

Our View: Castillo has only two home runs on the year, but one of his hits today was a double, his 15th of the year. Whether or not he remains in the two-hole is up in the air, but what is known is that he is swinging a hot bat with 11 hits in his last 23 AB (.478).
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsSaturday 5/10, 7:41 PM CT
San Francisco 3B Jose Castillo enjoyed an outstanding day at the ballpark today, going 4-for-4 in the Giants' 8-2 win over Philadelphia. Castillo hit his 12th double of the season, driving in one run and adding three runs scored to the day.

Our View: Castillo has struggled in recent weeks, but the month of May is bringing better returns, going 10-for-28 thus far.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsTuesday 5/6, 9:56 PM CT
San Francisco 3B Jose Castillo jacked just his 2nd home run of the season in the Giants' 12-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates this evening, but he made it count for three RBIs to top the San Francisco effort. Castillo went 1-for-3 with a walk on the evening, leaving two men on base along the way.

Our View: Castillo may not be hitting the long ball, but he's got a hot bat in his hands, going 7-for-18 over his last six games.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsWednesday 4/30, 7:08 PM CT
Jose Castillo hit his first home run of the season and couldn't have picked a better time to do it, slapping the first offering from Colorado RHP Ryan Speier in the top of the seventh inning into the left-field bleachers.

Our View: Castillo's tiebreaking homer proved to be the difference as the Giants went on to win 3-2 over the Rockies. It was Castillo's first home run since August 14, 2006, a span of 450 at-bats without a dinger.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsMonday 4/14, 11:40 AM CT
As dismal as the San Francisco Giants appear to be this season, their pitching staff (starters) has a 1.40 ERA over the past six games. Late spring addition, third baseman Jose Castillo, has eight doubles in April which leads the National League.

Our View: Surprisingly, the eight doubles have produced but two RBI on the season. This tells one that despite the starters solid ERA, and Castillo's propensity to plug the gap, bunching hits has been a problem for the rebuilding Giants.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsSaturday 3/29, 9:00 PM CT
In a spring training journey that can only be described as amazing, Jose Castillo has earned the job as the Giants’ starting third baseman, according to MLB.com. Castillo was signed by the Giants after the Marlins dismissed him from their competition at 3B, and in just one week of work, he has been named as a member of the starting lineup. Manager Bruce Bochy has also announced Rich Aurilia will now serve as the team’s starting first baseman.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsSaturday 3/22, 5:19 PM CT
The Giants have claimed infielder Jose Castillo off of waivers and the Marlins have let him go in that direction, according to the Florida Sun-Sentinel. The details of the move have yet to be determined (the Marlins could seek a trade agreement or simply let the Giants accept Castillo's $650K contract). The side effects of this move for both squads bear mentioning. The Marlins were rumored to be considering a roster that would include both Castillo and Jorge Cantu. Cantu is now the man. For the Giants, rumors of a potential trade for Wes Helms, Joe Crede, or Brandon Inge are all but dead.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsFriday 3/21, 1:11 PM CT
The Marlins have placed Jose Castillo on waivers, according to MLB.com. This doesn't necessarily mean he won't be with the team this year, as the Fish could just be gauging interest from other teams for a possible trade. However, it likely means that Jorge Cantu has won the third base battle. We'll keep you posted on Castillo's status.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsSaturday 3/8, 6:04 PM CT
Jose Castillo , fighting for consideration for the starting job at 3B for the Marlins, enjoyed a nice showing today, going 1-for-3 with a run scored in the Marlins' 5-2 win over Boston in Grapefruit League play. Castillo also added a stolen base, flashing his speed as a primary attribute he hopes could help his effort to win a spot on the major league roster.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsSunday 2/17, 11:39 AM CT
The Marlins may enter the 2008 season with a platoon at third base, the Miami Herald reports. The competition is wide open between Jose Castillo, Dallas McPherson, and Jorge Cantu. The Marlins have ruled out moving Dan Uggla to third. Fantasy owners should not be expecting much to come of this battle, although NL-only fantasy owners will undoubtedly need to pay attention.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsThursday 12/6, 10:58 AM CT
The Pirates released Jose Castillo on Thursday. Castillo at one point was considered the team's second baseman of the future, but his value really took a nosedive in 2007. He should be able to find a big-league job somewhere, but it's unlikely he will be starting. The Pirates filled Castillo's spot on the 40-man roster with Evan Meek, whom they selected with the second pick in the Rule 5 draft.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsThursday 6/14, 5:40 AM CT
Jose Castillo started for the third straight game Wednesday and had two hits, giving him five hits in his last 10 at-bats. Castillo has been playing in place of the slumping Jack Wilson. "Were not shelving anybody," manager Jim Tracy told the AP. "We're just taking advantage of the fact (Castillo has) played a couple good games and giving him a chance to play. That's all."
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsSaturday 5/12, 9:09 AM CT
Jose Castillo's agent, Scott Pucino, has informed the Pirates that his client wants to be traded if he cannot play regularly, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The Pirates declined to comment about any possible trade request. "Those specific things, I don't talk about publicly, anything related to a conversation with a player," said GM Dave Littlefield.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsWednesday 4/25, 6:35 AM CT
Jose Castillo began taking fly balls in the outfield during batting practice Tuesday as the Pirates look for more ways to get him into the lineup, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. "We'll see where it takes us," manager Jim Tracy said. "He's played the outfield in winter ball."
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsFriday 3/23, 2:32 PM CT
Jose Castillo has been beaten out for the Pirates third-base job and will open the year as a reserve, the team's official site reports. Jose Bautista is getting the nod at third base, and Freddy Sanchez was already set at second. Castillo hit about as well as Bautista this spring, but he may have lost ground with his sloppy play in the field.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsSunday 3/4, 7:03 PM CT
Jose Castillo, was scheduled to have X-rays on his sprained right foot Monday, but those plans were canceled after an encouraging workout Sunday morning, according to the AP. "I could play today if I had to," Castillo said. "It feels fine."
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsSunday 3/4, 9:43 AM CT
Jose Castillo will have X-rays taken tomorrow of a tender bone in his right foot, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Castillo was able to take part in a light workout this morning after injuring his foot yesterday, so it doesn't sound too serious at this point. "I could play today if I had to," he said. "It feels fine."
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsFriday 2/16, 10:34 AM CT
Jose Castillo reportedly has lost 15-20 pounds, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He's expected to battle Jose Bautista for the team's starting second-base job.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsWednesday 2/7, 10:59 PM CT
The Pirates signed Jose Castillo to a one-year, $1.9 million deal Wednesday, according to the AP. Castillo is expected to be the starting second baseman for the Bucs this year, though he could face some competition from Jose Bautista.
Jose Castillo, 3B, Washington NationalsSunday 8/13, 11:57 AM CT
With the recall of Chris Duffy from Triple-A Indianapolis, Jose Castillo will see significantly less playing time, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. For the second straight game on Saturday, Chris Duffy was in center field, Jose Bautista was at third base, Freddy Sanchez was at second, and Castillo was on the bench. "It simply boils down to this: Duffy was brought back to play, and we now have four guys for three spots in the infield -- and Freddy is going to play every day," manager Jim Tracy said. "We have several guys making strides ... who play the game the way it's supposed to be played. Jose has been part of that. This is nothing against Jose personally. There just are not enough spots for all these players. It's that simple." However, many of Castillo's teammates believe that the move could be related to Castillo raising his arms in the air and embarrassing third base coach Jeff Cox when he held a runner up on Thursday.
