Gustavo Chacin, P, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 4/6, 1:25 PM CT
Gustavo Chacin has signed a minor league deal with the Phillies. The club will send him to Triple-A.

Our View: The 28-year-old hurler holds a 4.18 ERA over 331.2 career innings pitched in the majors, and is not expected to be fantasy-worthy this season.
Gustavo Chacin, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 3/5, 4:41 PM CT
Gustavo Chacin got rocked in Thursday's Grapefruit League game, allowing three runs, four hits and four walks in only 2.2 innings.

Our View: A rookie of the year candidate in 2005, Chacin appears to have bottomed out after shoulder surgery and may not even make it back to the majors. Thursday's performance may be indicative of his ability from here on out. He has yet to throw more than 30 innings since 2006.

Gustavo Chacin struggled again for High-A Dunedin on Friday, allowing six runs, three earned in five innings. He allowed two home runs and now has an 8.49 ERA in three starts.

Our View: Chacin’s attempt at returning from a torn labrum is not going so well. We can’t say for sure that Chacin won’t make it back to the majors, but he is clearly nowhere near returning at the moment.

Gustavo Chacin's surgically repaired shoulder is feeling better, according to the AP. "I think I am 80 percent right now, but I am feeling better every time out," Chacin said. Unfortunately, 80 percent of Chacin equaled five hits, two walks, a homer and four runs over two innings during Tuesday's game. Expect him to begin the season at Triple-A while getting his shoulder up to 100 percent and his game up to speed.

Gustavo Chacin will compete with Jesse Litsch and Casey Janssen for the final spot in the rotation this spring, according to the Toronto Sun. Chacin had made a combined 22 starts over the past two years, but he showed in 2005 (3.72 ERA) that he can be a serviceable fantasy hurler when healthy.

Gustavo Chacin is scheduled to have surgery in New York on Wednesday to repair a small tear in his rotator cuff, according to the AP. He is expected to be ready in time for spring training.
