Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 3/9, 6:40 PM CT
Hideki Matsui went 1-for-2 in Los Angeles' 6-5 exhibition win over the Padres on Tuesday.

Our View: The hit ensured that he maintained a .500 average thus far this spring. Despite his move away from the cozy confines of Yankee Stadium, he should remain worth an own in almost every format
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 3/6, 5:27 PM CT
Hideki Matsui may be cleared to work in the DH role Sunday against Oakland, according to Lyle Spencer's (MLB Blogs) twitter page.

Our View: That will depend on how Matsui feels after today's workout. Skipper Mike Scioscia won't make him do too much in spring training, as he has two balky knees.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 2/28, 10:03 AM CT
According to the Boston Globe, the Angels plan to give Hideki Matsui a shot at manning the outfield despite his knee issues.

Our View: This is strange as Matsui has already admitted that his deteriorating knees aren't 100 percent, and we don't think that they ever will be. He's a tailor-made DH at this point in his career, so the Halos might just be trying to grab headlines or boost his ego.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 2/19, 5:57 PM CT
Hideki Matsui admitted that his knees are not 100 percent while heading into spring training with the Angels, according to the Orange County Register.

Our View: Matsui feels good overall, but his knee issue could force the Angels to restrict him to a DH role. That scenario shouldn't hurt his fantasy value much though.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 12/30, 8:37 AM CT
Hideki Matsui expects to see some time in the outfield for the Los Angeles Angels in 2010, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: He was exclusively a designated hitter for the world champion Yankees last season when he hit .274 with 28 home runs and 90 RBI. Even if he is used some in the outfield next year, the vast majority of his at-bats will come as a DH because of his creaky knees.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 12/14, 6:37 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Hideki Matsui has officially agreed to a one-year deal with the Angels, according to Tyler Kepner's (New York Times) twitter page. It is believed to be worth $6.5MM.

Our View: Godzilla is expected to replace Vladimir Guerrero as the Angels' DH.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 12/14, 3:57 PM CT
Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown reports that Hideki Matsui to the Angels for one-year and $6.5 million is as "good as done."

Our View: Pending a physical, Godzilla will be donning a halo. Stay tuned.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 12/14, 1:23 PM CT
The Angels are in "serious" contract talks with former Yankee Hideki Matsui, according to ESPN.

Our View: He would replace Vladimir Guerrero as the team's designated hitter. He hit .274 with 28 home runs and 90 RBI in 2009.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 12/8, 5:23 PM CT
The White Sox are believed to be a serious suitor for Hideki Matsui, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: The Angels are also believed to be interested in reeling in Godzilla. The Yankees still like Matsui, but can no longer ink him and Johnny Damon after acquiring Curtis Granderson.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 12/1, 9:31 AM CT
The New York Post's Joel Sherman does not believe that the Yankees will offer World Series hero Hideki Matsui salary arbitration.

Our View: This would make Matsui a true free agent, with no one-year contract in New York to fall back on if a big market for his services does not materialize. Since he is neither a Type A nor Type B free agent, the Yanks had almost nothing to gain by offering him arbitration.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 11/30, 11:19 AM CT
According to ESPN's Buster Olney, Hideki Matsui's "attraction as a marketable asset" to Japanese-American baseball fans will not be a factor in whether or not the Yankees decide to bring him back for 2010. "It is about getting the right player at the right price."

Our View: Luckily for Matsui in his case to return to the Yankees, his 2009 triple crown line of .274/28/90, and not just his nationality, warrant a new deal in the Bronx.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 11/6, 1:45 PM CT
Via a Japanese source, NPB Tracker reports that World Series MVP Hideki Matsui will not return to Japan in 2010, and will stay in America to play in the major leagues.

Our View: He will have 14 teams to choose from, as his creaky knees make playing in the National League all but an impossibility. If he does not stay with the Yankees, there have been rumors that he could join up with countryman Ichiro Suzuki in Seattle.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 11/4, 11:10 PM CT
Hideki Matsui went 3-for-4 with six RBI in tonight's 7-3 win over the Phillies in Game 6 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium. He hit a single, double and a two-run homer off Pedro Martinez. New York won the series 4-2.

Our View: Godzilla was named the World Series MVP, and becomes the first full-time DH to do so. He batted .533 with three homers and eight RBI over the six games.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 10/30, 10:02 AM CT
Despite playing exactly zero games in the field this season, the Yankees may use Hideki Matsui in the outfield in games three through five of the World Series, according to MLB.com.

Our View: He was one of the only Yankees hitting in the first two games of the World Series, going 3-for-6 with a home run. Still, with two bad knees, he is a humongous liability in the outfield, and this decision could end up being very beneficial for the Phillies.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 10/17, 5:24 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Hideki Matsui will start at DH against the Angels in Game 2 of the ALCS on Saturday.

Our View: Matsui gets the call over Jorge Posada, who was bumped from the lineup for Jose Molina. Molina apparently fits like a glove with A.J. Burnett (on the mound tonight), so he gets the start and Joe Girardi went with DH experience in Matsui.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 10/16, 10:26 PM CT
Hideki Matsui helped lead the Yankees in tonight's 4-1 win over the Angels in Game 1 of the ALCS at Yankee Stadium, as he went 2-for-3 with two RBI. He hit a single and a double.

Our View: Godzilla carried his weight from the DH spot tonight, and will try to remain hot in Saturday's Game 2.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 10/10, 4:52 PM CT
Hideki Matsui is reportedly telling friends that he would like to stay in New York for 2010, according to David Lennon of Newsday.

Our View: Matsui is not content with just a DH role, and would be willing to work at first base in order to play in the field. Lennon suggests that the cross-town rival Mets would be a good fit for Matsui, as they need help at first base and left field.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 9/16, 10:13 PM CT
Hideki Matsui went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored in tonight's 5-4 win over Toronto at Yankee Stadium. He hit a single and a two-run homer off Scott Downs.

Our View: Matsui crushed his 25th homer, and has enough time to reach 30 for the second time in his career if he gets hot. He hit a homer in two of his last four games.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 9/13, 4:11 PM CT
Hideki Matsui erupted at the plate on Sunday, going 3-for-5 with a homer and five RBI in a convincing 13-3 win over the Orioles.

Our View: Matsui's blast was his 24th this season and first since a two-homer game on August 23rd. He needs just two more this season to reach his highest total since 2004.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 8/23, 10:32 PM CT
Hideki Matsui went 2-for-4 with a pair of homers in Sunday's 8-4 win at Boston.

Our View: Matsui swatted two homers in two of his last three games, and collected eight dingers this month. He should remain a solid source for power as long as he stays healthy.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 8/21, 10:40 PM CT
Hideki Matsui cracked two home runs and racked up seven RBI in the Yankees' 20-11 blowout of the Red Sox on Friday.

Our View: Matsui was the only Yankee to homer in the 20-run performance on Friday. He now has 21 on the season and has reached the 20-homer plateau for the fourth time as a Pinstriper.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 8/18, 8:57 PM CT
Hideki Matsui is optimistic that his ailing left knee will be fine, according to MLB.com. He is back in the Yankees' lineup for tonight's game at Oakland after missing the last three games due to having his knee drained. He said, "I believe I will be fine for the rest of the season. I have a strong feeling that I can finish the season without any more problems."

Our View: Skipper Joe Girardi also has faith that Matsui will not have to miss extended time down the stretch. Matsui is a solid hitter when healthy, and fantasy owners should cross their fingers that he will remain intact for the remainder of 2009.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 8/14, 12:00 PM CT
According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Yankees won't bring back Hideki Matsui next season.

Our View: The Yanks are looking for more flexibility down the road and have other players they'd rather rotate in and out of the DH spot, so the banged up Matsui becomes expendable. With his bad knees he's now a defensive liability, so look for him to stay in the AL. His bat still works though, so there will likely be suitors.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 8/14, 12:01 AM CT
Hideki Matsui went 4-for-5 with five RBI and four runs scored in Thursday's 11-1 win at Seattle. He hit two singles and two homers.

Our View: Matsui has three homers over his last three games, and 19 for the season. He has a hit in eight of 11 games this month as well.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 8/1, 2:47 PM CT
Hideki Matsui is not in Saturday's lineup against the White Sox. Mark Teixeira has moved to DH, and Cody Ransom is getting a rare start at first base.

Our View: Matsui had a solid July, but we imagine the Yankees just want to get him a break against a lefty (John Danks).
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 7/28, 9:29 PM CT
Hideki Matsui was the major offensive force for the Yankees on Tuesday, but his two RBIs weren't enough as New York fell to the Rays 6-2. Matsui went 2-for-4 with a double and the two driven in.

Our View: Matsui has had a nice month in July, and he continued his hot streak tonight. Assuming he stays healthy, he should be a nice fantasy provider for the last two months of the season, so if he is available in your league you should give him a look.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 7/20, 9:08 PM CT
Hideki Matsui hit a game-winning solo home run in the bottom of the ninth in the Yankees' 2-1 win over Baltimore on Monday.

Our View: Matsui is now hitting .350 with five home runs and 14 RBI in 40 at-bats this July. He's definitely worth a look if he happens to be floating around the free agency pool in your league.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 7/5, 4:12 PM CT
Hideki Matsui carried the Yankees in Sunday's 10-8 win over the Blue Jays at home, as he went 2-for-4 with four RBI. He hit a single and a three-run homer off Brett Cecil.

Our View: Matsui is enjoying a power surge, as he hit a homer in three of his last four games. He has 13 homers for the season.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 7/2, 10:11 PM CT
Hideki Matsui went 2-for-3 with three RBI in tonight's 8-4 loss to Seattle at Yankee Stadium. He hit a double and a two-run homer off Jason Vargas.

Our View: This was an encouraging performance for Matsui after hitting a dismal .204 in June. He ended a 12-game drought without a home run.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 6/17, 8:39 AM CT
According to the Journal News, Hideki Matsui may be limited to pinch hitting duties during the Yankees' nine-game inter-league road trip.

Our View: Matsui's knees are balky and sore and the team doesn't want to risk playing him in the outfield. Since the Yanks will been in NL parks with no DH that limits Matsui to being just a bat off the bench. If you have a decent backup option in your outfield, your team will be better served with Matsui on the bench until the Yankees return home.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 6/14, 3:53 PM CT
Hideki Matsui went 1-for-3 with a home run, two walks, three runs scored, and two RBI as the Yankees beat up on the Mets for a 15-0 win on Sunday.

Our View: The DH is only hitting .257 on the season, but he has hit two home runs in his last two games. Interestingly, he is hitting .298 on the road and just .220 at home this season. It may be a good time to shop him around as Xavier Nady should be back before the all-star break.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 6/1, 12:37 PM CT
According to the New York Post's Joel Sherman, there is little chance the Yankees will re-sign Hideki Matsui after the 2009 season.

Our View: Matsui has seen his fantasy value dwindle the past few seasons as injuries have piled up, but as long as he is playing in the launching pad that is the new Yankee Stadium this season, he still serves as a decent spot starting option because of his power.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 5/27, 11:17 PM CT
Hideki Matsui led the way for the Yankees' offense on Wednesday in their 9-2 win over the Rangers. Matsui went 2-for-4 with two home runs, two runs scored, and three RBI.

Our View: Matsui has been battling the injury bug all season, but he looked very good tonight. When healthy, he can still be a very good hitter. Nights like this will probably not come around very often, but he should be solid going forward as long as his health maintains.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 5/14, 9:44 PM CT
Hideki Matsui returned to the Yankees' lineup with a bang on Thursday as he launched his fourth home run in the 3-2 win over the Blue Jays. Matsui is now hitting .265 on the year.

Our View: Matsui was questionable to even play tonight, but he made his presence felt. Matsui can still be a solid fantasy contributor if he can stay in the lineup, but right now he can't on a regular basis.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 5/13, 4:45 PM CT
Newsday reports that Hideki Matsui is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest.

Our View: Matsui left last night's game in the fifth with tightness in his hamstring and Joe Torre decided he should take today off as well. The injury isn't serious, as Matsui deemed himself ready to play today.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 5/12, 7:59 PM CT
According to MLB.com, Hideki Matsui left Tuesday's game with a hamstring injury in the fifth inning.

Our View: Matsui was replaced in the lineup by Nick Swisher. The severity of the injury is uncertain and he's considered day-to-day. Swisher will likely get the bulk of Matsui's at-bats if the injury keeps him out for more than just one game, which may be better for the Yankees as Swisher has been much more productive this season.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 4/29, 9:11 PM CT
Hideki Matsui went 1-for-2 with a double, three walks, a run scored and three RBI as the Yankees beat the Tigers 8-6.

Our View: Matsui has one of the pickier eyes in the majors and he now has 12 walks against nine strikeouts this season. His power seems to be in decline, but he is still excellent at getting on base.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 4/22, 12:43 PM CT
Hideki Matsui's ailing left knee is responding well to treatment, according to MLB.com. He said, "Little by little, it is getting better. Every game is really important, so in terms of yesterday, I got a hit and I got a run. I was able to contribute to help to the team winning the game, so that was the important part."

Our View: The treatment will allow him to remain in the Yankees' lineup as their DH. It was reported that Matsui had his knee drained last week, but he stated that he only received a cortisone shot.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 4/17, 10:31 AM CT
According to the Newark Star-Ledger, Hideki Matsui will miss Friday's game with fluid on his left knee. He is expected back in the next few games.

Our View: Matsui has had a rough start to 2009, hitting .154 with only one home run. His knees aren't in very good shape, which is why he has been playing strictly as a DH since the season began, but hopefully some rest will do him some good. He is not the fantasy threat he once was, but can still contribute when healthy.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 4/1, 5:19 PM CT
Hideki Matsui was 2-for-3 and hit his third home run of the spring on Wednesday. He drove in two on the day and is now hitting .233 this spring.

Our View: The banged up former outfielder will DH at least until June, but that shouldn't affect his fantasy status. He's been cold this spring, but is showing signs of heating up. When healthy he is a great run producer.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 3/18, 1:20 PM CT
Hideki Matsui will not roam the outfield until June as manager Joe Girardi does not want to risk a setback in his recovery from September knee surgery, according to ESPN.

Our View: The club intends to feature him in the DH role, and as a pinch-hitter until he is allowed to play in the outfield. This move should help keep him healthier, and he will be in position to generate solid numbers while projected to bat cleanup behind Mark Teixeira (while A-Rod is out).
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 3/17, 11:05 PM CT
Hideki Matsui went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in Tuesday's contest.

Our View: Matsui doesn't have the power stroke he did in Japan, but he hits for average and drives in runs in droves. You could get him late in your draft and he's low risk high reward.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 2/27, 6:33 PM CT
Hideki Matsui (knee surgery) ran the bases, fielded flyballs, and took batting practice on Friday, according to the AP. He could make his spring debut on Tuesday.

Our View: Matsui seems poised to DH this season, but he will also likely spell Johnny Damon some in left field. He remains and excellent contact hitter, but his power has begun to fade.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 2/14, 7:21 AM CT
Hideki Matsui is making solid progress in his recovery from arthroscopic knee surgery, according to the NY Times. Manager Joe Girardi said, "His tree trunks are back in order."

Our View: He will be excused from many running drills and won't see much time in the outfield in spring training, but should be ready to go for opening day. He looks to serve as the Yankees' DH, which should help him avoid another injury.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 1/27, 11:11 AM CT
Hideki Matsui is expected to be ready for the start of spring training, according to MLB.com. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in late September.

Our View: Matsui could be limited in 2009, namely since the Yankees currently have a surplus of outfielders, such as Johnny Damon, Xavier Nady, Nick Swisher, Brett Gardner and Melky Cabrera.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 12/26, 11:42 AM CT
The Rocky Mountain News reports that the New York Yankees may be interested in moving outfielder Hideki Matsui.

Our View: The Yankees have a number of corner outfield types, and are looking to thin out at that position.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 11/23, 10:26 AM CT
Hideki Matsui is ahead of schedule in his recovery from knee surgery, but is not going to represent Japan in the World Baseball Classic, according to Newsday.

Our View: Japan will be disappointed to not have him play, but he is on pace to be ready for the start of spring training, and does not want to compromise that.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 11/20, 7:42 AM CT
Hideki Matsui is ahead of schedule in his recovery from knee surgery and he is running in place, according to MLB.com. head trainer Gene Monahan noted that Matsui "looks great."

Our View: Matsui is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 11/8, 10:59 AM CT
Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui may be headed to the Mariners in a three-way trade between those two clubs and the Rockies, in what would be a blockbuster also featuring Robinson Cano and Matt Holliday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Trades like this are often bandied about at the beginning of the Hot Stove season, so we'll believe it when it happens.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 9/30, 5:19 PM CT
Hideki Matsui came to clean out his locker, and though he was seen limping due to surgery on his knee, he still believes he will be ready to rock for Spring Training 2009, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View: Matsui hit .294-9-45 this season in 337 AB, solid but underwhelming production, but a look at the OPS category tells a different story with a career worst .795 mark. In two of the last three seasons the once Ripken-like Matsui has failed to record 350 AB and he therefore enters 2009 as a huge question mark.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 9/16, 5:10 PM CT
Hideki Matsui will miss his fourth straight start tonight but is supposedly going to play Sunday before having surgery on his troublesome knee according to the Journal News.

Our View: Matsui showed some heart trying to play despite the banged up knee. Having the surgery next week should have him reday for opening day 2009.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 9/7, 10:21 AM CT
Matsui will have knee surgery in the off-season, but he would like to return to the Yankees as an outfielder and possibly even a first baseman in 2009, according to the New York Post.

Our View: Playing first base is a decent possibility next season with Jason Giambi's pending free agency.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 8/24, 5:00 PM CT
Hideki Matsui went 1-for-4 with a walk in the Yankees win over the Orioles. He also scored a run in his sixth game since coming off the DL.

Our View: Matsui only hitting .182 since rejoining the team, but he does have two home runs. It's likely his batting average will improve in time, however.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 8/23, 9:30 PM CT
Hideki Matsui had a solo homer Saturday, his second in five games since returning from the DL.

Our View: It's good to see Hideki show some pop right off the bat.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 8/21, 10:11 PM CT
New York's only run production Thursday night was off the bat of Hideki Matsui. His three-run homer in the seventh inning was all the Yankees could muster against Roy Halladay and the Blue Jays losing 14-3.

Our View: Matsui, who returned Tuesday after missing 49 games due to a sore left knee, homered for the first time since June 12 at Oakland.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 8/19, 8:58 PM CT
Hideki Matsui went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in his first game back off the DL on Tuesday night.

Our View: Fantasy owners shouldn't read anything into the hitless night. Most of the Yankees were flummoxed by A.J. Burnett, who tossed a gem.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 8/19, 5:08 PM CT
The Yankees have activated Hideki Matsui from the 15-day DL, MLB.com reports. The outfielder had been sidelined since June 22 due to a sore left knee.

Our View: We expect Matsui to be limited to DH duties, which means Johnny Damon will need to go back into the outfield. Fantasy owners can feel free to use Matsui, although we're worried about his balky knee holding up.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 8/18, 11:22 AM CT
Manager Joe Girardi indicated that Hideki Matsui could be limited to a DH role when he is activated from the DL, according to the NY Daily News. His ailing knee has held up favorably in three rehab games, and he could be back in pinstripes as soon as Tuesday.

Our View: Playing DH would help prevent his knee from swelling up again without the stress of running in the outfield. He could made a solid fantasy impact down the stretch, as he holds a .323 average over 69 games, with seven homers and 34 RBI.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 8/17, 12:22 PM CT
Manager Joe Girardi commented that Hideki Matsui should be activated from the DL Tuesday, according to the AP. Matsui had 15 at-bats during a simulated game at the Yankees’ spring training complex in Tampa, Florida on Sunday, facing left and right-handed pitching. Girardi said the swollen left knee that has hindered the rehab process several times seems to be holding up. Girardi added, "Every time he would get to bat, it would just blow up, but it hasn’t this time. So far the knee is good and we’ll make a decision tomorrow."

Our View: Matsui is batting .323 with seven homers and 34 RBI over 69 games this season, and could provide a boost to fantasy owners down the stretch, if his knee allows.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 8/16, 10:03 PM CT
Hideki Matsui went 1-for-3 with a single in his second rehab game on Saturday. He has been out since June 22 due to a sore left knee.

Our View: It sounds like the Yankees will push Matsui quickly if his knee responds well. He could be back next week and potentially help fantasy teams over the final five weeks or so.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 8/15, 6:15 PM CT
Hideki Matsui hit a solo homer Friday in his first minor league rehab game. Matsui is working his way back from a left knee injury.

Our View: If all goes well, Hideki should be back before the end of the month.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 8/14, 11:09 AM CT
Hideki Matsui, who is on the DL with a swollen left knee, will begin a minor-league rehab assignment in Tampa today, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View: It appears he is no longer at risk for season-ending surgery. Barring a setback, he could be back in pinstripes by the end of the month.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 8/11, 3:24 PM CT
Hideki Matsui, who is recovering from a swollen left knee, ran the bases for the first time Monday since being sidelined in late June by the injury, according to the Journal News.

Our View: He could start playing in minor league rehab games soon, and feels he is making favorable progress every day. Matsui should remain stashed on fantasy rosters, and could provide a boost for the stretch run, as he was hitting .323 with 34 RBI over 69 games this season.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 8/9, 4:31 PM CT
New York Yankees designated hitter and left fielder Hideki Matsui intensified the running program for his injured left knee on Saturday and is believed to be nearing a rehab assignment in the minor leagues, according to CBSSports.com.

Our View: Matsui, placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 27, ran 90 feet several times. He's expected to run the bases soon. That's one of the final steps before playing in minor league rehab games. Matsui had right knee surgery during the offseason, and decided not to have surgery on the left knee last month an effort to rejoin the Yankees this season.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 8/6, 11:09 PM CT
Hideki Matsui hit 37 pitches during batting practice at the Yankees facility in Tampa, Fla. Wednesday, according to the AP. Matsui, coming back from a left knee injury, is expected to begin a running program Thursday.

Our View: Matsui still has a ways to go. We'll continue to monitor his progress.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 8/3, 7:00 PM CT
Hideki Matsui will head to Florida this week to continue his rehab on his swollen left knee, according to the Associated Press. “So far the brace has worked,” Girardi said. “Obviously, the activity he’s had isn’t really baseball activity.”

Our View: Matsui has been riding a stationary bike and hitting off a tee, so he still has a long way to go before the team will know if he will be able to avoid surgery and be a productive bat in their lineup.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 7/29, 9:02 AM CT
Hideki Matsui restarted baseball activities Monday for the first time since the All-Star break and said his inflamed left knee felt fine afterward, according to the NY Post. He took 20 swings off a tee and five swings of soft-toss. "He's going to hit off a tee for a few days and see how it responds," GM Brian Cashman said, "and then if all goes well, then we'll take it up a notch."

Our View: It looks like at this point Matsui will be able to avoid surgery, but his return is not imminent.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 7/28, 8:05 PM CT
Hideki Matsui hopes to return in two weeks according to MLB.com. He took 20 swings off a tee and five soft tosses before Monday night's series opener against the Orioles and afterwards said, "So far, it's looking pretty good."

Our View: Matsui and his .323 average is badly needed in New York. Expect the same consistency from him once he returns.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 7/21, 6:10 PM CT
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman doesn't sound positive about Hideki Matsui returning from an injured left knee. The outfielder opted against surgery on Monday. "I wouldn’t say I’m optimistic at this point," Cashman tells Newsday. "I think it speaks a lot to his heart. The doctors looked at him and recommended surgery. He wants to give this another try."

Our View: We don't know exactly what's wrong with Matsui's knee, but we have to assume the recommended surgery isn't minor. Fantasy owners shouldn't plan on Hideki helping them again this year.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 7/21, 4:44 PM CT
Hideki Matsui had his left knee examined again on Monday, and he has opted against surgery, ESPN.com reports.

Our View: We can only assume that the suggested operation would have been season-ending. The Yanks don't have a secure timetable for Matsui's return, and this report adds doubt to how effect he will be when and if he does get back to the field.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 7/19, 8:28 AM CT
Hideki Matsui met with team doctors recently, according to MLB.com. The outfielder/DH said through an interpreter he had been told to "avoid activities and stay quiet" through the weekend. Matsui, who has had continued swelling in the knee, said the possibility of surgery was still "out there," though no timetable has been discussed.

Our View: On Monday, Matsui will visit Dr. Scott Rodeo, who performed the arthroscopic surgery on Matsui's right knee last November. Following that appointment, the Yankees should have a better idea of Matsui's status.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 7/15, 6:12 PM CT
Hideki Matsui may undergo season-ending surgery on his right knee, which has kept him off the field since June 22, according to Yankees.com.

Our View: This would be a blow to fantasy owners hoping to get him back in the season's second half. He had been posting quality numbers, with a .323 average, seven home runs, 34 RBI and an on-base percentage of .404.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 7/15, 1:54 PM CT
Hideki Matsui didn't hit Tuesday after experiencing more discomfort in his sore left knee, according to the AP. The Yankees had hoped he might be ready to return from the DL when eligible on Friday. Matsui said, "Perhaps you can say so, it’s a short-term setback. I’m going to hit tomorrow, that’s the plan anyway."

Our View: There is no target date for when Matsui might begin a running program, which is a key step before playing in minor league rehab games. Should Matsui’s knee not respond, surgery could be an option. His goal remains avoiding surgery and returning to the Yankees.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 7/11, 2:52 PM CT
Hideki Matsui, who is recovering from a swollen left knee, may take batting practice on Saturday, according to the AP. He could also start a running program soon, and said (through a translator), "I think if everything goes well, then probably sometime the beginning of next week. As of right now, I’ve had no problems at all."

Our View: He is also hopeful he won't need surgery this season for the ailing knee. We will keep you posted on his status.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 7/8, 7:29 PM CT
Hideki Matsui took 45 swings off a tee Tuesday, and he reported nothing negative after the session. "I felt pretty good," Matsui said through a team spokesman. "No pain. I hope to keep going in a positive direction." Still, Yankees manager Joe Girardi can't rule out the possibility of surgery, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Surgery would be a terrible blow to the Yankees and fantasy owners. The Yanks have had some luck with minor league outfielders such as Brett Gardner, who's value would increase if Hideki cannot return this season.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 7/7, 9:34 AM CT
Team trainers noted that Hideki Matsui is making some progress in his recovery from a swollen left knee, but GM Brian Cashman suggested that playing the outfield would not be part of Matsui's rehab work, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View: Although Matsui is improving, there remains no timetable for his return. When he does return, it sounds like he could be limited to DH duty.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 7/3, 10:47 AM CT
Hideki Matsui may be sidelined until after the All-Star break, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: It appears the Yanks will take their time with Matsui, but he should produce in the second half as they look to make a charge towards the playoffs.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 6/28, 5:49 PM CT
The Yankees hinted that Hideki Matsui could need surgery on his ailing left knee if it doesn't start feeling better. The slugger was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday.

Our View: Matsui hasn't played since injuring his knee in a mid-June interleague series against the Astros
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 6/27, 6:29 PM CT
Updating a previous report, Hideki Matsui has been placed on the 15-day DL due to a sore knee, according to the AP. The team activated hurler Sidney Ponson as a corresponding move.

Our View: Matsui aggravated his knee when he played the outfield in two games during the Yankees’ inter-league set against the Astros from June 13-15.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 6/27, 11:22 AM CT
Hideki Matsui will be placed on the disabled list after Game 1 of today's double-header at Shea Stadium, this according to LoHud.com. The Yankees plan to activate Sidney Ponson to start the second of the two-game tilt and moving Matsui to the DL will make room on the 25-man roster.

Our View: There has been no news yet on Matsui's visit to the team doctor concerning his bum knee. The move will likely be retroative to June 15, the last day the Yankees' left fielder played.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 6/27, 9:08 AM CT
The New York Post is suggesting that Yankees' skipper Joe Girardi might shelf outfielder Hideki Matsui due to his bum knee. "You don't want it to come to that, but if it's in the best interest of the club, we will talk about it." Matsui said the knee is improving daily and feels that he could DH today in the first game against the Mets New York Mets at the Stadium. And he said he isn't that far away from returning to the outfield. He hasn't played there since June 15.

Our View: Matsui, who is hobbled by a bothersome left knee, will be reexamined by a doctor today. Placing Matsui on the disabled list would also open a spot for the teams' spot starter for today's double-header against the Mets. That spot starter, Sidney Ponson.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 6/26, 6:11 PM CT
Hideki Matsui is out of the Yankees lineup on Thursday night due to a flare up with his injured knee, according to the Associated Press. Matsui will be reexamined on Friday when he could rejoin the lineup at DH or possibly be sent to the DL. “It’s always a possibility,” manager Joe Girardi said. “You don’t want it to come to that, but if we feel it’s in the best interests of him and the ballclub, that’s something we’ll talk about.”

Our View: Matsui has sat out four games now, and with the Yankees without a day off until July 7th, they may not be able to continue to wait for Matsui to get healthy enough to contribute. Luckily for the club, Johnny Damon (foot) was able to return on Thursday.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 6/25, 8:59 AM CT
Hideki Matsui was not in the outfield mix this week because of his swollen left knee, this according to the New York Daily News. The Japanese import also awoke Tuesday with a stiff neck so he was removed from the pinch-hitting mix, too.

Our View: Matsui's knee, which was drained of fluid last week, will prevent him from playing the outfield during this series.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 6/20, 5:32 PM CT
Hideki Matsui has missed the last two games with a sore knee, but that streak will end on Friday as he will be in the lineup to face the Reds, according to MLB.com. "He seems fine," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He gave me a thumbs up when he came in today. Obviously he'll take BP, and I don't think there's any restrictions.

Our View: Matsui will continue to be used as the designated hitter, a fact that should help him to keep the movement with his wonky knee to a minimum.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 6/19, 12:43 PM CT
Hideki Matsui is battling soreness in his left knee and is not in the starting lineup today, but could be available to pinch-hit against the Padres, according to MLB.com.

Our View: He is expected to play on Friday at home against the Reds, but the team will continue to evaluate his knee. The Yankees will not have a DH option over six games from June 24-29 as they are on the road against the Pirates and Mets.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 6/18, 8:27 PM CT
Yankeee outfielder Hideki Matsui is out of tonight's lineup due to soreness in his left knee, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Matsui said there is some inflammation, but he couldn't point to a specific instance when the pain started. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Matsui will meet with Dr. Stuart Hershon on Wednesday to look at the swelling and drain some fluid from the knee. We will update his condition as news comes forth.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 6/12, 11:39 PM CT
Hideki Matsui knocked in all four Yankees runs on Thursday night as he hit a grand slam off Joe Blanton in the Yankees victory over the Athletics, 4-1.

Our View: Matsui has been his normal steady self this year hitting a very quiet .322, though he has knocked in only 33 RBI in 62 games. As his knee continues to strengthen, look for the extra base power to be kicked up a notch.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 5/22, 1:19 PM CT
Hideki Matsui has a good record against Brian Burres, tonight's opposing hurler for Baltimore, according to MLB.com. Matsui has hit two homers, a single, and forced two walks over 10 career plate appearances against the Orioles' lefty.

Our View: Matsui is hitting well with a .297 average, and should have another solid outing at home tonight, going by his history against Burres. Keep him active in your lineups.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 5/20, 12:30 PM CT
Hideki Matsui has hit safely in 17-of-20 home games at Yankee Stadium this season, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Matsui has multiple hits in four of his nine home games in May as well. Keep him active in your lineups tonight in the Bronx against Baltimore.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 5/18, 11:10 PM CT
Hideki Matsui had the Yankees only two RBI on Sunday night thanks to his sixth home run of the season.

Our View: Tonight's home run was a majestic blast for Matsui who has been more of a small ball type hitter for most of the first quarter of the season. He sure turned on that high fastball tonight and blasted it into the night though.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 5/10, 7:26 AM CT
Hideki Matsui's 17-game hitting streak came to an end last night, as he went 0-for-4 against Detroit, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View: Matsui is hitting .333 over 34 games this season, with four homers and 17 RBI and 14 runs scored. He is hitting well following a slow start, and while his RBI totals are low now, he will still have a chance to challenge 100 while playing in the Yankees' solid and efficient lineup.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 5/7, 9:53 PM CT
Hideki Matsui went 1-for-4 top extend his hitting streak to 16-games on Wednesday night.

Our View: Matsui is now hitting .339 which has helped to offset a bit of a slow start with the power stroke (one home run in 18 games). Matsui will end up with his .300-25-100 season just like always, so just be patient.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 5/6, 9:40 PM CT
Hideki Matsui is locked in. The outfielder went 3-for-3 on Tuesday night and now owns a 15-game hitting streak. Matsui is up to .342.

Our View: If the guys behind Matsui in the Yankees lineup weren't struggling so much, Hideki would probably have 25 runs by now. Anyway, fantasy owners should be enjoying the excellent average.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 5/1, 10:18 PM CT
Hideki Matsui had only one hit on Thursday night but it was enough to extend his hitting streak to 11-games.

Our View: With machine like efficiency Matsui just keeps producing solid seasons of around .300-20-100. Even though he plays for the Yankees, he sometimes is lost in the fantasy universe because of the fact that he is surrounded by so many talented players.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 4/28, 6:13 PM CT
Hideki Matsui is back in the Yankees lineup tonight after missing Saturday and Sunday's contests. Godzilla is hitting sixth and playing left field.

Our View: The Indians are throwing their third consecutive left-hander, Aaron Laffey tonight, at the Yankees which has resulted in several creative lineups from manager Joe Girardi.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 4/15, 11:47 PM CT
Hideki Matsui hit his third home run of the season on Tuesday night as the Yankees defeated the Rays, 5-3.

Hideki Matsui has a good track record against Andy Sonnanstine, tonight's opposing hurler for Tampa Bay, according to MLB.com. Over his career against Sonnanstine, he is 3-for-8 with two homers.

Our View: Matsui is hitting 14-for-41 so far, and should fare well tonight.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 4/7, 9:37 PM CT
Hideki Matsui had two hits and two RBI on Monday night for the Yankees. Matsui is now hitting .375 with six RBI though seven games as his knee hasn't gotten in the way of him spraying balls all over the field.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 4/6, 3:25 PM CT
Hideki Matsui went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and notably blasted his second homer of the season in a 2-0 win over Tampa Bay on Sunday. That was a great outing for him as he was only hitting 4-for-16 coming into today's game.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 4/1, 7:26 PM CT
Hideki Matsui is batting eighth for the Yankees tonight after never hitting lower than sixth for them last season. He was slowed this spring while recovering from knee surgery, so perhaps he'll be moved up in the order in due time. Manager Joe Girardi has said that Robinson Cano will stay in the sixth spot, so Matsui could possibly end up in the five spot (where Jason Giambi is hitting tonight) or the seventh spot (where Jorge Posada is hitting). Matsui is manning the DH spot until his knee feels good enough so that he can play the outfield.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 3/17, 5:43 PM CT

Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 3/4, 10:00 AM CT
Hideki Matsui was unable to take batting practice for the second straight day Monday because of a stiff neck. "It's not a big deal," manager Joe Girardi told the NY Post of Matsui not taking BP. The outfielder is slated to start playing in games next Monday, and Girardi said the neck problem wouldn't alter those plans. "It won't slow him down when he gets in games," Girardi said. "Except for the cutting he looks good. I have watched him do cutoff and relays and there are no problems. I haven't seen anything to think he would have a setback." The neck isn't the issue with Matsui, it's his surgically repaired knee. At this point, he should be fine for opening day, but keep tabs on him to make sure he doesn't suffer any setbacks.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 3/3, 2:58 PM CT
Hideki Matsui is slated to take batting practice on Monday. He tweaked his neck two days ago and is still rehabbing his right knee. "The running is the important part, the cutting," manager Joe Girardi tells MLB.com about the knee. "And he's not having any problems. When I saw him the first day in Spring Training, I [said], 'Wow, he looks great.'" Matsui is expected to be ready for opening day.

Matsui isn't sure when he'll play in his first spring game, but he still expects to be ready for opening day. Call us pessimistic, but we'll still be keeping a close eye on Godzilla this spring to make sure he doesn't have any setbacks.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 2/14, 2:41 PM CT
Hideki Matsui admitted to MLB.com that although he hasn't returned to game shape quite yet, he expects to be there by the end of spring training. "We still have about a month and a half until opening day," Matsui said through an interpreter. "That's a lot of time. I'm sure that by then, I should be feeling pretty good." Keep an eye on Matsui's progress this spring. Even if it turns out that he's ready by opening day, this could turn out to be a reoccurring problem.
Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 2/13, 8:57 AM CT
Hideki Matsui will meet with the Yankees medical staff today to determine what course of action will be taken with his surgically repaired right knee. Hideki Matsui, DH, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 10/2, 10:45 AM CT
Hideki Matsui is expected to be used as the DH during the ALDS against the Indians because of his ailing right knee, according to Newsday. He had fluid drained from his knee on Sunday. There's also the chance that Shelley Duncan could get the start against lefty C.C. GM Brian Cashman told the New York Daily News that Matsui has been cleared by doctors only to hit - and not to play the field - and that the situation might not change before the playoffs. "We see him as the DH because of the projection from the injury," said Cashman. "Him playing the outfield is something that may not happen, and Hideki knows it," Cashman said. "I'm not saying it won't, but no one in the organization is counting on it."
