Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 7/1, 6:09 PM CT
Craig Monroe has been released by the Pirates, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: This comes as little surprise, as the team designated him for assignment two weeks ago. Monroe is a career .252 hitter with 115 home runs in 814 games.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 6/20, 9:31 AM CT
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have designated Craig Monroe for assignment.

Our View: Monroe's three home runs and .215 average weren't enough to keep him on the team and he was bumped to make room for prospect Steve Pearce.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 4/25, 11:53 PM CT
Craig Monroe was 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI, and a run scored as the Pirates beat the Padres 10-1 on Saturday. He started in in left field and hit third in the lineup.

Our View: Monroe only started tonight because Nate McLouth was unable to go due to a tweaked oblique. The outfielder does not see enough regular duty to warrant any fantasy consideration at this point. However, he does have an impressive nine RBI in 23 at bats.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 4/18, 2:07 PM CT
Craig Monroe went 2-for-4 with six RBI in Saturday's 10-0 win over the Braves at PNC Park. Both of his hits were three-run homers.

Our View: Monroe started the game in left field, but should see more playing time following today's stellar performance. He has topped 20 homers three times over his career with Detroit, and is worth picking up in NL-only leagues if dangling on the waiver wire.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 4/15, 3:46 PM CT
According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Craig Monroe will get his first start of the season Wednesday night against the Astros.

Our View: Monroe earned his spot on the team by hitting eight home runs this spring, but he has only had three at-bats and no starts thus far in 2009. He is not a fantasy option in any format at this time.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 4/4, 6:31 PM CT
Craig Monroe hit his eighth home run of the spring in his only at-bat for the Pirates on Saturday. The solo shot also accounted for his 16th RBI of spring training.

Our View: Although Monroe looks to have made the roster, he won't be much more than a fourth outfielder until the club is willing to admit that Nyjer Morgan is just not worthy of an everyday job.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 4/1, 2:11 PM CT
Craig Monroe has earned one of the final spots on the Pittsburgh Pirates opening day roster, according to MLB.com. He has a .270 average with six home runs and 13 RBI this spring.

Our View: Monroe is the only one of the five Pirate outfielder who swings a right-handed bat, so he could find himself in a platoon situation at some point this season. Regardless, he figures to have no fantasy value as he will see more reserve duty than not.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 3/12, 3:34 PM CT
Craig Monroe had a monster game against Scott Baker and the Twins Thursday. The Pirates outfielder was 3-for-3 with three home runs and four RBI.

Our View: Monroe is quickly playing his way onto this Pirates club. He now has six home runs on the spring season and is hitting .333. If Monroe keeps this up he'll likely start for the Pirates and could be a valuable fantasy OF in NL-only leagues.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 3/8, 6:23 PM CT
Craig Monroe was 2-for-3 with a run scored in Pittsburgh's 11-4 win over Houston on Sunday.

Our View: The veteran Monroe will be battling for a starting spot in a crowded Pirate outfield that features prospect Andrew McCutchen, Steve Pearce, Nyjer Morgan, and Nate McClouth.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 1/13, 10:39 AM CT
Outfielder Craig Monroe has signed a minor-league contract with Pittsburgh, and has been invited to spring training, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: Monroe has power, but lacks any semblance of a batting eye. He was designated for assignment by the Twins in August last season after hitting just .202. He had some decent years in Detroit, including a 28 home run campaign in 2006, but he strikes out a ton and has a career OBP of .301, so don't expect much out of the veteran if he makes the team.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 8/1, 3:35 PM CT
Craig Monroe is going to be designated for assignment today by the Minnesota Twins, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Our View: Monroe has a batting average of .202 and an on-base percentage of .274. Really, no further explanation should be necessary.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 7/1, 10:15 PM CT
The Minnesota Twins had more than enought offense flowing tonight, but the Tigers gave chase and made it interesting with the Twins emerging 6-4. The charge was led by designated hitter Craig Monroe , going 2-for-3 with one walk and his eighth homer of the season to total three RBIs and one run scored.

Our View: Monroe suffered through an injury-plagued and frustrating month of June, hitting just .125 with two home runs and five RBIs. The hope is to get back on track and tonight gets him moving in the right direction.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 6/26, 10:24 PM CT
Craig Monroe has been working on his timing at the plate and chief among those changes is the elimination of his exaggerated leg kick so that he can be more consistent with inconsistent levels of playing time, according to MLB.com. "I'm starting to get comfortable because I'm doing it every day in batting practice and in the cage," Monroe said. "I'm feeling like I don't have to have this high leg kick with all the movement to generate the power that I have. I'm trying to keep it simple."

Our View: For a player who isn't in the lineup every day, it only makes sense for him to simplify his approach at the plate. Perhaps eliminating the league kick will also help him to cut down the strikeouts since 30.4% of all of his at-bats have ended in a whiff.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 6/20, 10:19 PM CT
Craig Monroe went deep for the sixth time this season with a two run shot off of Randy Johnson on Friday night.

Our View: Monroe is hitting a poor .211, but he continues to display a solid power bat. However, with 38 K and just 10 walks, his plate discipline is so poor that it's hard to say that he doesn't deserve that low batting average.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 5/15, 1:31 PM CT
Craig Monroe got the start in center field today, as Carlos Gomez has been scratched due to the flu, according to MLB.com. Jason Kubel is serving as the DH.

Our View: Monroe is playing favorably this season, as he holds a .270 average over 24 games, with four homers and 15 RBI. He doesn't have any stolen bases, and the team will miss Gomez's speed on the basepaths today, but they will still be in good hands with Monroe taking his place.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesMonday 5/12, 5:21 PM CT
After doubled his homer total from two to four with two towering shots off Tim Wakefield and Mike Timlin on Sunday, Craig Monroe is in the starting lineup for the second straight day.

Our View: Monroe is hitting sixth and serving as the team's designated hitter.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 5/3, 9:34 PM CT
Craig Monroe started in center field in place of the injured Carlos Gomez (headache) on Saturday against Detroit, and took advantage of the playing time as he went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer.

Our View: Monroe is a talented player, but his fantasy value will be limited while fighting for playing time in a strong Twins' outfield with Carlos Gomez, Michael Cuddyer, and Delmon Young.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 4/23, 12:02 AM CT
In news that will come as a minor shock to both Twins and Cubs fans, Craig Monroe hit a homer on Tuesday night. He went 3-for-4 with a double, round-tripper, two runs, and three RBI against the A's. Monroe hit only one long ball in his previous 48 games.

Our View: Monroe still seems light years removed from his 28-homer, 92-RBI campaign in 2006, and we don't foresee him getting many at-bats once Michael Cuddyer is healthy.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 4/9, 4:26 PM CT
Craig Monroe will be in the starting lineup tonight, as the Twins resume their three-game series with the White Sox, according to the Star Tribune. Monroe is battling for playing time in the field, but mostly at-bats as the teams' DH versus Jason Kubel.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 4/4, 11:38 PM CT
With the injury to Michael Cuddyer, Craig Monroe should get the bulk of playing time in left field for the Twins, with Delmon Young sliding over to right field. Jason Kubel should start most of the time at DH.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 4/1, 8:13 AM CT
Craig Monroe was handed the start at DH over Jason Kubel on Monday, but failed to take advantage and prove his worth as he went 0-for-3 with a strikeout, while leaving three men on base. Kubel went 1-for-1 as a pinch hitter, which hurt Monroe's bid to keep the DH gig even more.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesMonday 3/31, 3:09 PM CT
Craig Monroe will handle the DH role over Jason Kubel on Monday, according to the Star Tribune. He is facing righty Jered Weaver and is scheduled to bat sixth in the lineup.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 3/30, 2:25 PM CT
According to the Star Tribune, skipper Ron Gardenhire did not say whether Craig Monroe or Jason Kubel would be his designated hitter for Monday’s season opener. Gardenhire said he wanted to look at the numbers again before making a final decision.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 3/6, 8:23 PM CT
Craig Monroe returned from a strained calf that kept him out of action for a week to play in his second game of the spring on Thursday. In the game, Monroe had a two run single for the Twins. Monroe is involved with Jason Pridie and Carlos Gomez for playing time in the OF, so a solid spring would certainly be beneficial to the former 28 HR hitter.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 3/1, 4:25 PM CT
Twins manager Ron Gardenhire told the Star Tribune that Craig Monroe has a strained calf muscle, this following his team’s 7-6 loss to the Boston Red Sox Saturday. Monroe hasn’t been able to work since Thursday, but he was back in the batting cage today. “He felt more like a cramp than anything else,” Gardenhire said. “But we’re just backing him up — a little more precautionary. A couple days. He wants to get out there pretty quick, so hopefully we’ll be able to get him back out there.” Consider Monroe nothing more than a deep league AL-only option when healthy.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 12/11, 10:03 PM CT
The Twins inked Craig Monroe to a one-year, $3.85 million deal Tuesday, avoiding arbitration. Monroe will back up at the corner outfield spots and could start at DH against lefties.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 11/13, 1:19 PM CT
The Twins acquired Craig Monroe from the Cubs Tuesday in exchange for a player to be named. Monroe hit just .219 with 12 home runs and 59 RBI in 122 combined games with the Cubs and Tigers in 2007. He figures to compete for playing time in left field for the Twins.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 11/13, 10:29 AM CT
The Twins and Cubs have discussed a trade that would send Craig Monroe Craig Monroe to Minnesota for a player to be named, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Monroe, who hit just .219 with 12 homers in 392 at-bats this year, is viewed by many to be a non-tender candidate, but the Twins may want to strike a trade now rather than have to deal with the free agent market.
Craig Monroe, RF, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 8/23, 1:10 PM CT
The Cubs acquired Craig Monroe from the Tigers on Thursday in exchange for a player to be named, according to the AP. Monroe, who hit .222 with 11 homers in 99 games with Detroit, had been designated for assignment last week. He can play all three outfield positions, but he's going to have a hard time cracking the starting lineup on a consistent basis in Chicago, especially once Alfonso Soriano returns.
