Joe Kennedy, 28, last with the Toronto Blue Jays, died at his in-law’s home on Friday after collapsing. The pitcher was in the Tampa Bay area for a wedding this weekend. After going to bed early on Thanksgiving night, Kennedy awoke at about 1:15 a.m. and collapsed as he was leaving a bedroom. Hillsborough County Fire Rescue transported him to Brandon Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death is unknown at this time. Kennedy spent time with the A’s the Diamondbacks and the Blue Jays this last season.

The Blue Jays purchased the contract of Joe Kennedy from Triple-A Syracuse Sunday. Kennedy will work as a left-handed specialist out of the bullpen. "It's kind of like a 26-game tryout to see where we stand for next year," said Kennedy in the AP. Kennedy holds a 4.77 ERA in 30 games (16 starts) for Oakland and Arizona this year.

Kennedy has struggled recently after getting off to nice start to the season, and now he'll attempt to rediscover the form that allowed him to post a 2.31 ERA in 39 relief outings last year. "We'd just be better as a team with him in the bullpen," Manager Bob Geren said in the Mercury News. "He had a great season for us in the bullpen last year." As far as who will replace Kennedy in the rotation, that is completely up in the air. Lenny DiNardo has already come back from the bullpen to take the injured Rich Harden's spot. Options include Colby Lewis, Shane Komine and Dallas Braden.
