Johnny Estrada, C, Washington NationalsThursday 7/24, 7:09 PM CT
Johnny Estrada has been designated for assignment by the Nationals, according to the AP. The team activated Lastings Milledge from the DL, and Estrada was viewed as expendable to make room on the roster.

Our View: Estrada lost his spot on the Nationals' roster due to a dismal .180 average over 50 at-bats.

Johnny Estrada has been activated from the DL following his bout with a left elbow injury, according to the AP. Wily Mo Pena has been placed on the 15-day DL as the adjoining move.

Our View: Estrada only batted .179 with no homers over 17 games with the Nationals this season, and shouldn't hold any fantasy value while working behind Jesus Flores.

Johnny Estrada will travel to Florida to continue working on his recovery from an injured elbow, according to MLB.com. Estrada hopes to return to action by the end of the month.

Our View: When Estrada is healthy, it's not a certainty that he will be able to unseat Jesus Flores or Paul Lo Duca (also to be activated soon).

Johnny Estrada has been placed on the 15-day DL, according to the AP. He is dealing with ulnar neuritis in his right elbow. The team activated outfielder Elijah Dukes from the DL to fill his spot on the roster.

Our View: Estrada was only hitting .179 with no homers and three RBI over 39 at-bats this season, and held no fantasy value prior to landing on the DL.

Johnny Estrada will be placed on the DL on Friday with ulnar neuritis in his throwing elbow, according to the Washington Post. "I'm done trying to just battle through," Estrada said. "I've got to look out for what's best for me and my career."

Our View: Jesus Flores will be recalled from Triple-A to take Estrada's roster spot and he will back up Wil Nieves.
Johnny Estrada, C, Washington NationalsThursday 4/24, 8:53 PM CT
Johnny Estrada is once again dealing with soreness in his elbow, and with Paul Lo Duca on the DL, the Nationals are being forced to go with Will Nieves on Thursday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Estrada should be in the lineup on Friday, but he is hitting just .208 in 24 AB and has done nothing to take advantage of the injury to Lo Duca.

Johnny Estrada's surgically repaired knee is fine, but his surgically repaired right elbow still is tender and inflamed, so he'll be shut down for the time being, according to the Washington Post. "I'm not too worried - yet," Estrada said. He won't work out for a few days, at which point we should have a better read on his status going forward.

The Nationals have signed Johnny Estrada to a one-year, $1.25 million deal. Estrada must pass a physical before the deal is finalized. According to a baseball source, the move was not made in reaction to Paul Lo Duca's knee surgery, but rather the Nats felt they were heavy on right-handed bats, according to MLB.com. It's not clear how the Nats plan on divvying up the playing time between Estrada and Lo Duca. One thing that is clear is Jesus Flores will now begin the year in the minors - assuming Lo Duca is ready at the start of the season.

Unable to get a deal done with Yorvit Torrealba, the Mets acquired Johnny Estrada from the Brewers on Tuesday in exchange for Guillermo Mota, according to the AP. "Johnny adds depth to our catching situation," said Mets general manager Omar Minaya. "He's a former All-Star who switch-hits and has hit over .300 three times in his career." Estrada is coming off knee and elbow surgeries, but it appears he'll be fine for spring training. He should receive most of the playing time behind the plate for the Mets in 2008, although Ramon Castro will figure into the mix, as well.

Johnny Estrada knows how poorly he played in his first year with the Brewers - particularly behind the plate and trying to throw out potential basestealers - but he thinks injuries have been a big reason for the decline in his defensive ability. "I was pathetic," Estrada said in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Estrada dealt with a hamstring injury for much of the year and missed the last week of the season after tearing cartilage in his left knee, but it was a bone spur in his elbow that led to the catcher throwing out a league-low 7.6 percent of runners attempting steals. He's actually dealt with the spur since 2001. "This year, (the spur) caused more pain than ever before. I couldn't get past that. Every time I would throw, I'd get a real sharp pain." Estrada had surgery on his knee and elbow shortly after the season and hopes that will lead to improved results next year. "I don't feel like the Brewers got the player they traded for. I'm excited about coming back next year and showing what I can do."

Johnny Estrada underwent arthroscopic surgery Thursday to repair torn cartilage in his left knee as well as remove a bone spur from his throwing elbow. Estrada missed the final week because of the knee problem, but the elbow problem had not been previously disclosed, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. The catcher threw out a league-low 7.6% of runners attempting steals this year and the Brewers might think the elbow surgery will lead to better results next year.

Johnny Estrada has torn cartilage in his left knee and it was thought he was done for the year, but he took batting practice Tuesday and could be available to pinch hit left-handed over the final week. The switch-hitting catcher would not be available to bat right-handed because of pain from finishing on his front leg. "With the tear we're still kind of waiting to see exactly where he's at," manager Ned Yost said in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

The Brewers are still fighting for a playoff spot, but they'll have to do so without the services of their No. 1 catcher. Johnny Estrada is done for the season after an MRI revealed a medial meniscus tear in his left knee. He will have arthroscopic surgery on the knee at the conclusion of the season. "The doctor said it's a significant tear but otherwise the knee looks good for a 31-year-old catcher," Estrada said in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "He said he wouldn't recommend that I keep playing because it could make it worse." Damian Miller will be the regular catcher for the final week and in the postseason should the Brewers make it.

Johnny Estrada and infielder Tony Graffanino came to the defense of a teammate on Thursday and got into an argument with manager Ned Yost. Reports suggested that Estrada and Yost were the two fighting. "Nothing could be farther from the truth," Yost tells the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "For Johnny Estrada to be portrayed as the villain in this, as somebody who instigated it, is not even close. To be honest, Johnny stepped up to protect his teammates."

Johnny Estrada returned to action Friday, but his sore hamstring isn't 100 percent. "It's not getting that much better," manager Ned Yost told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "He has played with it." It's nice that Estrada is playing through the injury, but a nagging hamstring problem for a catcher is obviously a major concern.

Johnny Estrada said that a stomach specialist told him that he might have an ulcer, according to the Arizona Republic. "The only way to tell for sure is for them to stick the scope down there and take a look (with an endoscopy), so I'll have to have that done," he said. "I'm not going to do it (today), though. It's an off day and I'm going to spend it with my family. If it truly is an ulcer, it's probably stress related, so maybe a day with my family will make it go away."
