Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 10/4, 8:24 AM CT
The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that Phillies' manager Charlie Manuel has said that Ryan Madson will get the first chance as the team's closer for the postseason. Madson and Brad Lidge will both likely see late-inning duties.

Our View: The Phillies need to hope that one of these two guys turns in on in the postseason, because it is tough to win in October without a closer. This is the Achilles' heel of the defending champs, so they need to do something to get it figured out.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 9/12, 6:56 PM CT
Ryan Madson continued the Phillies' bullpen's nightmare season on Saturday, allowing two ninth inning runs to the Mets, as Philadelphia lost 10-9 at home.

Our View: The blown save was his sixth of the season, and he and Brad Lidge have now combined for an unfathomable 16 in 2009. The Phillies may now finally be forced to give Brett Myers a chance to lock things down late.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 9/9, 9:55 PM CT
The Phillies and manager Charlie Manuel called on Ryan Madson, and not Brad Lidge, when a save situation arose on Wednesday night. He allowed one hit, while striking out one, en route to picking up his sixth save of the season.

Our View: There's your answer about Brad Lidge. While Madson wasn't perfect, he was competent, and it appears Lidge's days of terrorizing Philly fans are finally over. Add Madson as quickly as possible if you are a Lidge owner.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 9/8, 11:33 AM CT
The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting that Phillies' reliever Ryan Madson has missed the last four games with an apparent oblique strain. Madson may be unavailable for a few more days.

Our View: The Phillies are struggling at the back end of their bullpen, and Madson has squandered several chances to take Brad Lidge's closer spot. Don't expect him to change roles any time soon unless Lidge gets injured.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 8/26, 9:22 PM CT
A day after the belagured Brad Lidge blew his major league "leading" ninth save, Ryan Madson blew his fifth, as the Phillies were forced to rally for a 4-1 win in ten innings in Pittsburgh.

Our View: Madson did pitch a scoreless tenth to pick up the win, but missed a huge opportunity to impress Phillies brass and make them think long and hard about demoting Lidge. If you picked up Madson in hopes that would be the case, it's not looking likely for the moment.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 6/18, 4:29 PM CT
Ryan Madson was shaky again on Thursday, surrendering the game winning home run to Rod Barajas of the Blue Jays in the ninth inning.

Our View: Madson's game today came on the heels of his blown save against the Jays on Tuesday. Lockdown in the Phillies setup role this season, he appears ordinary as their fill in closer while Brad Lidge is out.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 6/16, 10:43 PM CT
Ryan Madson blew his second save of the season on Tuesday night, and his first since taking over for the injured Brad Lidge, walking two and surrendering a run in the ninth inning against the Blue Jays. The Jays would go on to win 8-3 in 10 innings.

Our View: Madson has been lights out in 2009, posting a 2.16 ERA while striking out 37 and walking just 11. Tuesday night is likely nothing more than a bump in the road. He is an excellent option at closer while Lidge is out, and a very solid middle relief option in leagues with holds.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 6/9, 1:50 PM CT
With Phillies' closer Brad Lidge being placed on the 15-day DL on Tuesday, it appears as if Ryan Madson will assume the closer's role in Philadelphia in Lidge's absence. Madson has a 2.22 ERA on the season with 31 strikeouts in 28 innings pitched.

Our View: No announcement has been officially made, but it would appear as if Madson will get most, if not all, the Phillies' save opportunities while Lidge is gone. NL-only managers should pick him up for sure, and mixed league managers in need of saves should give him a look as well.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 4/30, 8:32 AM CT
Ryan Madson could step in if Brad Lidge (knee) needs to go on the DL, according to the Wilmington Journal.

Our View: Madson has fired 15 strikeouts over 10 innings this season, with a 1.20 WHIP. He would be worth acquiring in NL-only leagues if he serves as the Phillies' closer until Lidge comes back.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 1/19, 11:26 AM CT
The Phillies have inked Ryan Madson to a three-year extension worth $12 million plus incentives, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View: He looks to be the Phillies' setup man behind closer Brad Lidge, and should do a favorable job as he held a 1.23 WHIP over 82.2 innings in 2008.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 1/16, 9:10 AM CT
Ryan Madson has reportedly turned down a three-year extension with the Phillies worth $12 million, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View: He is eligible for free agency after the 2009 campaign. As of now, Madson looks to be the Phillies' setup man for next season.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 12/9, 12:51 PM CT
Delaware Online reports that the Cardinals may be interested in Ryan Madson as a potential closer and the Phillies are looking for an outfielder to replace Pat Burrell.

Our View: The Phillies would likely prefer to have right-handed hitter Ryan Ludwick, as oppose to Rick Ankiel or Skip Schumaker, who both hit left-handed.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 12/4, 9:02 AM CT
Phillies' GM Ruben Amaro Jr. has talked to reliever Ryan Madson regarding a contract extension, according to BaseballProspectus.com.

Our View: Madson held a solid 1.23 WHIP with the club in 2008, and may be difficult to extend, as he is represented by Scott Boras, who compared Madson to Mariano Rivera.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 10/29, 4:59 PM CT
ESPNews is reporting that Ryan Madson will start the top of the seventh inning for the Phillies when the World Series resumes.

Our View: Madson has had a great 2008 playoffs and has appeared in all three of the Phillies World Series wins.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 10/26, 11:54 PM CT
Ryan Madson bounced back from a blown save in Game 3 to get four outs in the Phillies 10-2 victory over Tampa Bay on Sunday. He struck out three hitters in 1.1 innings and allowed no baserunners.

Our View: Madson has appeared in all three of the Phillies' World Series victories and has proven to be one of the most important players on their roster.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 10/24, 10:23 PM CT
Ryan Madson has stepped up and become the ever valuable eighth inning bridge for the Phillies before the ball is handed off to closer Brad Lidge, according to the Phillies Official Website.

Our View: Over the last 24.1 innings he has been on the hill Madson has permitted all of two earned runs to cross the plate. He and Lidge are simply dominating right now, so if the Rays hope to win the World Series they had better avoid entering the eighth inning trailing.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 8/10, 5:21 PM CT
Ryan Madson pitched the ninth inning and picked up his first save in Philadelphia's 6-3 win over Pittsburgh.

Our View: Lidge was unavailable with a "sluggish" shoulder, so Madson pitched a perfect ninth. Keep an eye on Lidge's situation, as it looks like Madson would take his place if he has to be disabled.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 4/10, 10:29 AM CT
Ryan Madson has been suffering from shoulder soreness over the last five days, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. The relief pitcher commented that the soreness wasn't in the same area as the shoulder strain that caused him to miss the last two months of last season, and he added, "It feels 100 percent today." He threw on the side yesterday under the supervision of pitching coach Rich Dubee, and noted that the shoulder has improved each day since his last appearance. Madson is an important part of the Phillies' bullpen, and hopefully he can return to action soon.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 3/13, 6:57 AM CT
Ryan Madson allowed just one run over three innings in a 6-1 loss to Cincinnati on Wednesday. The Philadelphia Inquirer suggests that despite the Phillies weakness at the fifth starter's spot, Madson is not a candidate for the job. He was assigned the Wednesday start because the team did not want Cole Hamels facing the Reds when he could oppose them in the second week of the regular season. Madson was groomed as a starter in the minors and would someday like to return to that role, but for now he will continue to work out of the bullpen.
Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 1/18, 11:49 AM CT

Ryan Madson, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 7/29, 10:08 PM CT

Geoff Geary was recalled from Triple-A Ottawa to replace Madson on the roster.

Ryan Madson has been sent back to the bullpen in favor of rookie Scott Mathieson, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Although no announcent was officially made, the decision became obvious after Madson pitched an inning of relief in last night's win over the Cardinals. The decision means that Randy Wolf will be bumped up to start on Friday in place of Madson. Madson has made 17 starts this season, going 8-5 with a 6.28 ERA.
