Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 3/3, 8:20 AM CT
Dealing with lingering knee and shoulder injuries, Freddy Sanchez will most likely begin the regular season on the disabled list, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Our View: He isn't expected to start hitting at Spring Training for at least another week. He is still very draftable in NL-only leagues, but should probably be avoided in even deep mixed formats.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 2/24, 8:20 PM CT
According to MLBlogs.com, infielder Freddy Sanchez (left shoulder, left knee) is expected to be ready to begin fielding ground balls by this weekend.

Our View: Sanchez had offseason surgery on the shoulder and it still isn't clear if he'll be ready to start the season on time. If he does miss some time at the beginning it won't be much, and he should quickly earn back his starting gig at second base.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 2/17, 12:19 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez is ahead of schedule in the rehab of his surgically-repaired right shoulder, though his status for Opening Day remains iffy, according to the San Jose Mercury News' Andrew Baggarly.

Our View: Eugenio Valez or Emmanuel Burriss would be the best bet to open the season at second base should Sanchez not be ready at that point, though the Giants could also open up a spot in the outfield and play Mark DeRosa at second. Still, it seems like Sanchez won't be out for too long.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsFriday 10/30, 5:47 PM CT
The Giants have re-signed Freddy Sanchez with a two-year deal worth $12MM, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: Sanchez is taking a $2.1MM pay cut for 2010 in return for $6MM in 2011. The club examined his surgically-repaired left knee this morning, and it is apparently healing fine.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 9/26, 5:43 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Freddy Sanchez will miss the rest of the regular season with a partially torn meniscus in his left knee.

Our View: Sanchez expects to undergo arthroscopic surgery this week. The pending free agent has been limited to just 25 games since being acquired by the Giants, and has battled not only the knee issue but a shoulder ailment as well. His future with the Giants is certainly in jeopardy.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 9/23, 11:40 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez will "require surgery on the tear of the meniscus in his left knee that he aggravated Monday night," according to MLB.com.

Our View: With the Giants still faintly in contention for the wild card (five behind Colorado), however, the team wants him to tough out the final ten days of the season.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 9/21, 9:24 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez exited tonight's game at Arizona in the first inning after injuring his left leg, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: The injury-prone infielder was helped off the field, and his status is yet to be updated. Kevin Frandsen replaced him in the lineup.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 9/21, 8:11 AM CT
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates would be amendable to bringing back both of their recently traded middle infielders, Freddy Sanchez and Jack Wilson, for the 2010 season.

Our View: Both have been huge letdowns for their new teams. Because of injury, Sanchez has played in just 23 games since being traded to San Francisco, and is hitting only .278. Wilson, meanwhile, has also been slowed by injury in Seattle, and is hitting an ugly .224 in 31 games. The paper says both would welcome a return to Pittsburgh, and at least for the moment, it's hard to envision much competition for either player.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 9/12, 6:00 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez is out of the lineup on Saturday, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Our View: He is not hurt. Eugenio Velez will start in his place.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsFriday 9/4, 7:16 PM CT
MLB.com is reporting that Giants' infielder Freddy Sanchez could return to the team as soon as Sunday after he went 1-for-3 in his first rehab game Thursday night. Sanchez was projected to return to the lineup on Monday.

Our View: The sooner Sanchez can return to the lineup, the better for the Giants. They need their entire arsenal available down the stretch as they battle the Rockies, Braves, and Marlins for the Wild Card. Sanchez should be a spark for the lineup when he returns, whether it be Sunday or Monday.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsThursday 9/3, 6:50 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez is expected to begin a rehab assignment for Triple-A Fresno on Thursday night, according to MLB.com. Sanchez is hoping to be activated on Monday for the team's series against the Padres.

Our View: Sanchez should be able to return on Monday barring a setback, and Giants' manager Bruce Bochy said that he could be back this weekend if the team needs him. Don't expect to see him until next week, but he should be good to go when he comes back.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSunday 8/30, 2:21 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez expects to be ready to be activated when he is eligible to return from the DL Wednesday, according to MLB.com. Sanchez is expected to make one or two rehab appearances before being activated.

Our View: Sanchez will likely go on assignment tomorrow, and he should be in the lineup on Wednesday when he is eligible. Sanchez will be a nice boost to the lineup, and he is coming back at the perfect time for the team.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 8/29, 7:01 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez has resumed baseball work while recovering from a strained shoulder, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He took grounders before Friday's practice.

Our View: Sanchez is eligible to come off the DL on Wednesday, and should be back in action by the end of next week for fantasy owners.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 8/25, 6:34 PM CT
The San Francisco Giants have placed infielder Freddy Sanchez on the 15-day DL with a left shoulder injury, according to the team's Twitter page. The team recalled Ryan Rohlinger from Triple-A to replace Sanchez on the roster.

Our View: This move comes as no surprise, as Sanchez has not been able to get back on the field. The move will be retroactive, but it is unclear at this time how long Sanchez will be sidelined. With the Giants right in the middle of the Wild Card race, the team needs him back ASAP, and as soon as he is ready to go he will return to the lineup.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSunday 8/23, 11:50 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez could land on the 15-day DL due to his ailing left shoulder, according to the Mercury News.

Our View: Sanchez has missed 10 of 23 games since being acquired via trade from Pittsburgh, and his shoulder didn't respond well a day after taking swings in the batting cage. Sanchez noted that it might be time for a different course of action.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 8/22, 5:17 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez is out of the lineup again on Saturday. He has missed five consecutive games with a sore shoulder.

Our View: So much for his pledge to play on Saturday. He said he would play if the shoulder was at all improved, so it looks like he is still hurting. Sanchez wants to return ASAP, but if he is too injured to go then he can't go. Expect him to return soon, but it might not be until next week.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsFriday 8/21, 6:07 PM CT
Updating a previous report, Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez is not in Friday's lineup as originally expected, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

Our View: Sanchez has missed four consecutive starts with a sore shoulder, but will test the ailment with batting practice before Friday's game. He feels bad about being out of the lineup for so long and actually issued an apology to fans. He also pledged that he would play Saturday if the shoulder is at all improved.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsThursday 8/20, 3:37 PM CT
MLB.com reports that ailing second baseman Freddy Sanchez expects to return to the lineup on Friday.

Our View: Sanchez has missed three straight games with a sore shoulder, but apparently feels well enough to predict tomorrow's start. He's had plenty of rest, so he should be good to get back into fantasy lineups. It's probably safer to wait until close to game time though to make a final decision on him.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsThursday 8/20, 11:16 AM CT
According to the San Jose Mercury News, Freddy Sanchez is not in the Giants' lineup Thursday for the third consecutive game.

Our View: Looks like the ailing shoulder is still bothering Sanchez. He may be able to return to action this weekend, but is still considered day-to-day. Eugenio Velez will lead off and place second in his place.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 8/18, 6:32 PM CT
According to the San Jose Mercury News, Freddy Sanchez is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game due to a sore shoulder.

Our View: Sanchez has battled injury all season and is once again considered day-to-day. No word on his return.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 8/11, 9:16 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Freddy Sanchez was held out of the Giants lineup on Tuesday with a sore left shoulder.

Our View: Sanchez has battled various ailments this season, and will likely be day-to-day.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSunday 8/9, 7:04 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez was productive in Sunday's 5-2 loss to Cincinnati at AT&T Park, as he went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

Our View: Sanchez is hitting .367 over 30 at-bats in August, and is riding a seven-game hitting streak. He should remain productive for fantasy owners as long as he stays healthy.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSunday 8/2, 8:42 PM CT
New acquisition Freddy Sanchez went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the Giants' 7-3 win over the Phillies on Sunday.

Our View: This was Sanchez's debut with San Fran and the team has to feel good about adding a solid bat to an unpredictable lineup. He won't blast many homers, but he's a doubles machine and is almost a lock to hit .300.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 8/1, 8:40 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez will be activated by the Giants on Saturday, but he will not start until Sunday, at the earliest, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Our View: Sanchez is still getting over a sore left knee, and the Giants are giving him ample time to pack his bags.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsThursday 7/30, 11:30 PM CT
Skipper Bruce Bochy is hopeful that Freddy Sanchez could make his debut with the Giants Saturday or Sunday when they battle the Phillies, according to MLB.com. He is recovering from a left knee injury.

Our View: Sanchez was batting .296 with a .334 OBP with Pittsburgh, and his fantasy value should remain about the same with his new club.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 7/29, 6:05 PM CT
As has been widely rumored to happen all day, the Pirates have traded second basemen Freddy Sanchez to the San Francisco Giants, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Dejan Kovacevic.

Our View: In return, they are getting heralded starting pitching prospect Tim Alderson. The move caps a day that also saw the Bucs trade away Sanchez's long-time double play partner, Jack Wilson, and head-case starting pitcher Ian Snell to the Mariners. The 17-year rebuilding process rolls on.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 7/29, 3:52 PM CT
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have squashed the rumor that Freddy Sanchez is headed to the Giants. The team reports that there is no deal in place for the second baseman.

Our View: There was apparently a deal in the making between the two clubs, but an MRI on Jonathan Sanchez's knee revealed concerns and the Giants backed out. That doesn't mean a new deal won't get done, or even that the two teams won't revisit the original framework, but as of right now nothing is on the table.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 7/29, 2:31 PM CT
According to Joel Sherman at the New York Post, the Giants are "definitely getting Freddy Sanchez".

Our View: San Fran was rumored as Sanchez's most likely destination, and it looks like the former batting champion may be on his way. Nothing is concrete yet, but it seems inevitable. Stay tuned.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSunday 7/26, 5:59 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts on Sunday, dropping his average to a season low .296.

Our View: As trade rumors about him have swirled, Sanchez has slumped mightily, seeing his average fall from .318 on July 18 to its current .296. He has also battled a bad back, and could be a question mark going forward.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 7/13, 9:59 AM CT
The Pirates claim they are not actively trying to trade infielder Freddy Sanchez, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: This contradicts just about every report out there, but there is a possibility it could be true. The team, however, does admit that other clubs have approached them about Sanchez, and has not said he will not be traded. The smart money is still on him leaving Pittsburgh, though any trade shouldn't alter his fantasy value too much. He is an acceptable choice at second base in most formats.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSunday 7/12, 5:28 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez was 2-for-4 with a single, a double and an RBI in the Pirates' 5-2 loss on Sunday.

Our View: Sanchez has been one of the few bright spots for the Buccos offensively this season. The Pirate hit machine is batting .333 in July and has his average up to .316 on the season.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsFriday 7/10, 8:43 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez went 2-for-4 with a single and a double in tonight's 3-2 loss at Philadelphia.

Our View: Sanchez has been nursing a sore back, but managed to have a solid outing at the plate tonight. He has a hit in four straight games, with seven total hits over the span.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsFriday 7/10, 9:24 AM CT
While the Pirates are indeed "pushing hard" to trade Freddy Sanchez, no deal is imminent, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: The Rockies, Giants and Twins are believed to be three of the teams most interested in Sanchez and his .316 average. His value could be limited, however, by his balky back and a clause in his contract (600 plate appearances in 2009) that would automatically trigger an $8 million 2010 option. Stay tuned.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsThursday 7/9, 11:41 AM CT
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates are "pushing hard" to trade second baseman Freddy Sanchez. The teams that have shown the most interest are San Francisco and Colorado.

Our View: The Pirates are really going to trade everyone they can this summer, and now their one All-Star is going to go. If a move is made, look for him to go to Colorado, since they have shown the most interest as of late.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 7/7, 6:16 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez is sitting out again on Tuesday as he continues to deal with a balky lower back, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune Review.

Our View: Sanchez's injury comes at a bad time for both him and the team. Him because he was on one of his better streaks of the season, and the team because they would likely like to showcase him for a potential trade. Either way, just take it day-by-day, as the Pirates don't appear to have any plans to place him on the DL.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 7/6, 8:37 AM CT
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the San Francisco Giants have interest in Pirates infielder Freddy Sanchez.

Our View: Sanchez is batting .316 on the season, and was just named to his third All-Star team on Sunday. He has been battling back issues, however, and missed all three Pirates games over the weekend, and is expected to not be able to play Monday night, either. He is set to return Tuesday, though. Whenever he does, he will likely keep hitting.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsFriday 7/3, 3:29 PM CT
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pirates' second baseman Freddy Sanchez is a late scratch for Friday's game with soreness in his back. He will be replaced by Ramon Vazquez in the lineup.

Our View: Sanchez felt the back issue as he arrived at the ballpark today, and he is being considered day-to-day by the team. It doesn't sound serious, but get him out today for sure and monitor his status for the weekend.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 6/30, 8:42 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored in tonight's 3-0 win over the Cubs at PNC Park. He hit a double and two singles, and also swiped a base.

Our View: Sanchez was in need of a solid outing, as he was hitless over his previous eight at-bats (two games). He ended a three-game skid without an RBI as well.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSunday 6/21, 6:26 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez went 2-for-4 with three RBI in Sunday's 5-4 loss at Colorado. He hit a single and a two-run homer off Jorge De La Rosa.

Our View: Sanchez raised his team-leading batting average to .319, and is riding an eight-game hitting streak, with 10 RBI over the span. He should remain a solid option among fantasy second basemen as long as he stays healthy.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 6/15, 12:21 PM CT
Despite leading all NL second basemen in batting average (.315) and placing second among his peers with a .997 fielding percentage, Freddy Sanchez is not among the Top 5 at his position in all-star voting, according to MLB.com.

Our View: There's still a good chance that Sanchez winds up in this game. In MLB, each team sends at least one representative and it looks like it will be either Sanchez or Zach Duke from Pittsburgh. However, Chase Utley, Orlando Hudson, and Brandon Phillips all figure to be selected ahead of Sanchez.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 6/13, 8:45 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez carried the Pirates offensively in Saturday's 9-3 win over the Tigers at PNC Park, as he went 2-for-4 with a single and a grand slam.

Our View: Sanchez ended a 15-game skid without a homer - and did it dramatically with the grand slam. He raised his batting average to .311.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsFriday 6/12, 8:55 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez went 1-for-4 with a double and recorded the Pirates' lone RBI in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Tigers at PNC Park.

Our View: Sanchez is hitting .308, but only has 20 RBI and four homers. He does not offer much to fantasy owners other than a solid batting average.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsThursday 6/4, 2:48 PM CT
After an eight game stretch where the Pirates second basemen hit safely seven times and raised his average 39 points to .333, Freddy Sanchez had his second 0-for-5 game in three days against the Mets on Thursday, despite the Pirates scoring 11 runs.

Our View: Sanchez is prone to long hot streaks book-ended by much calmer periods, but he is still a professional hitter and a decent option at second base in most formats.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsThursday 5/28, 8:38 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez was held out of Wednesday's game to rest, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: Sanchez was on an 11-for-18 hot streak, but manager John Russell sat him to give him consecutive days off as the Pirates do not play Thursday. He should draw back into the lineup Friday when the Pirates start a three-game set with the Astros at PNC Park.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 5/25, 10:51 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez went 6-for-6 with a home run, a double, a stolen base, four runs scored, and three RBI as the Pirates defeated the Cubs 10-8 on Monday.

Our View: Sanchez raises his average 23 points to .320 with tonight's performance. After a 5-for-36 streak, he is 9-for-15 in his last three games. He has scored 30 runs this season.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 5/11, 9:14 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez was given his second day off over a four-day span, but he feels that his shoulder is strong and "beyond 100 percent," according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He aggravated his right shoulder when diving for a ball last Tuesday.

Our View: This is good news, as Sanchez is hitting .317 over 28 games, with three homers. Delwyn Young has been covering his spot at second base while out of the lineup.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 5/6, 12:50 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez will be re-evaluated today after driving his shoulder into the ground while diving for a ball Tuesday, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View: Manager John Russell believes Sanchez is OK, but noted that he may be sore. His status for tonight's game at St. Louis is yet to be determined.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 4/25, 11:55 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI as the Pirates beat the Padres 10-1 on Saturday. He collected his ninth double in the game.

Our View: Sanchez's ninth double was also his 13th extra base hit in 74 at bats. He is hitting .351 and although he is prone to strike outs, he has been among the better producers at second base in the early going.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 4/21, 8:57 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, an RBI, and a run scored as the Pirates beat the Marlins 3-2 on Tuesday.

Our View: With 10 hits in his last five games, the second baseman has been swinging a hot bat to start the season and is one of the hotter waiver wire pickups at the moment. He is batting .367/.387/.667 through 60 at bats.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 4/13, 4:57 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez was 3-for-5 with three doubles and two runs scored in Monday's thrashing of the Houston Astros.

Our View: Sanchez had a four hit night last Wednesday and had three more hits today, bringing his batting average up to .375 for the year. He has gotten off to a great start in 2009, and could be a nice pickup if middle infield is lacking.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsThursday 4/9, 12:02 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez had a four hit night on Wednesday as the Pirates stunned the Cardinals 7-4. He doubled, scored a run and drove in a run as well. He's now hitting .571 on the young season.

Our View: Sanchez may be back to his batting title days. Keep a close fantasy eye on him as he could be a nice waiver pickup if he continues his hot streak.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 3/9, 5:09 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez was held to 0-for-2 on Monday, but he still managed to drive in two runs against the Red Sox.

Our View: Sanchez is batting .389 so far this spring and could be ready to contribute in fantasy leagues again. Keep an eye on him.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSunday 3/1, 8:22 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez was 1-for-2 with two RBI and one walk on Sunday against the Tigers.

Our View: Sanchez is batting .500 so far this spring. Fantasy owners can hope for a bounce back year from him, but counting on it probably isn't wise. He probably will go undrafted in most leagues.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 2/25, 5:05 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez went 2-for-2 on Wednesday against the Phillies with and RBI and a double.

Our View: Sanchez really has dropped off from 2006 win he won the NL batting crown by hitting .344. He also had 86 RBI that year. Since then, he has dropped off by hitting .304 with 81 RBI in 2007 and .271 with just 52 RBI in 2008.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsFriday 1/23, 8:22 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez said he is feeling good right now after suffering through a disappointing 2008 campaign with an ailing shoulder, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Sanchez commented, "I'm feeling good, really good. Obviously, I wasn't right all of last year, but I'm excited right now."

Our View: Sanchez started to feel better down the stretch last season and batted .346 after the All-Star break, which ranked fourth-best in the NL. He is also wearing contact lenses now after dealing with blurry vision, and is slated to visit an eye specialist next week. He looks to remain an injury risk for 2009, but the former batting champ is still worth taking a chance on if on the board in the later rounds of fantasy drafts.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSunday 12/28, 8:43 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez is progressing favorably from the lingering shoulder injury that spoiled his 2008 campaign, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: Sanchez is participating in two-a-day workouts with a personal trainer in California and is having no negative issues regarding his shoulder. He could bounce back with the Pirates in 2009 and potentially be a favorable value pick for fantasy drafts, assuming the club doesn't trade him.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 12/8, 9:02 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez could be phased out of Pittsburgh as the club has been very pleased with minor league prospect (Double-A Altoona) Shelby Ford and believe he may be their second baseman of the future, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: That could be the main reason the Pirates have been listening to trade offers for Sanchez, who previously won a batting title. As for Ford, he is worth a look in deeper keeper leagues following this news.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 11/29, 1:50 PM CT
The Pirates have been getting a lot of interest regarding second baseman Freddy Sanchez, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: Sanchez won the batting title two years ago, but he was a disappointment last season, hitting just .271 with an OPB under .300. Those types of players aren't hard to find, and with Sanchez's salary, Pittsburgh may not get a lot in return unless they eat some of the salary.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSunday 9/21, 4:30 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez had two hits on Sunday to boost his season average up to .267.

Our View: Over the past 10 games Sanchez has racked up 13 hits and he is batting .351 in September and .344 since the All-Star break (.186 AB). Sanchez is hoping to prove that he is finally healthy after failing miserably to approach his batting average the past three years (.291, .344, .304).
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSunday 9/14, 12:22 PM CT
Sanchez returned to the Pirates' lineup on Saturday after missing time with blurred vision. However, he won't play every day for the rest of the season due to the blurred vision and his nagging shoulder injury, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: Sanchez is a mediocre fantasy option for the rest of the season if he is not playing every day.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 9/13, 7:52 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez missed his third straight game Friday because of blurred vision in his right eye, according to the Beaver County Times. Sanchez was examined by an specialist Friday and treated with eye drops.

Our View: Freddy hopes to play tonight.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsThursday 9/11, 9:01 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez will have his right eye examined Friday in Pittsburgh, and his return to regular duty looks doubtful until then, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He was held out of the lineup Wednesday night after being pulled from the game Tuesday due to blurriness in the eye. The blurriness has been a nagging on-and-off problem, since he had a tiny shard of metal removed from the eye in April 2007. The shard, as Sanchez recalled, became lodged in the cornea during an April 17 game in St. Louis, though he remains unsure how.

Our View: Eye drops and other medication have allowed him to have mostly good vision in the eye, but the blurriness he experienced early in Tuesday's game was the worst he has ever experienced. The exam will be performed by Dr. Dasa Gangadhar, who is the same doctor who did the surgery.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 9/9, 8:39 PM CT
After playing just one inning Freddy Sanchez was removed from the game due to blurred vision in his right eye, according to Pirates.com.

Our View: There was no other news on Sanchez available immediately and will keep you up to date as information becomes available.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 9/6, 11:11 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez returned to the starting lineup on Saturday and went 4-for-5. He scored twice and added two RBI in the Pirates' 7-6 loss to the Giants.

Our View: Sanchez has had a down year but seems to step it up now that the games mean absolutely nothing. He hit .318 in August and is coming in at .500 for September. Invest at your own risk.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsFriday 9/5, 7:57 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez sat out of the starting lineup Thursday as a precaution after being hit by a pitch on the underside of his right forearm near the heel of his hand Wednesday night, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He said, "Usually, the day after is when it's the sorest."

Our View: He did make an appearance as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning, and should be ready to play tonight.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsThursday 9/4, 11:56 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez returned to the Pirates lineup on Wednesday, after an MRI on his aching right shoulder found nothing wrong, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: Sanchez has dropped a long way in the eyes of fantasy owners, who recall with fondness when he won the NL batting title. No longer that player, Sanchez should not be on fantasy rosters, as not only is his batting average below .300 (at .257), so is his OBP (.282).
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 8/16, 9:18 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez went 3-for-5 against the Mets on Saturday. He is 33-for-89 (.371) since the All-Star break.

Our View: Sanchez has been dealing with right shoulder issues all season, and many fantasy owners justifiably gave up on him. His work since mid-July, though, makes us believe he is worth another look.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsThursday 8/14, 8:16 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez returned to the Pirates' lineup Wednesday after missing two games due to lingering inflammation in the right rotator cuff, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: He went 0-for-4 in the game against the Reds Wednesday, and hopefully he will bounce back before the start of the next fantasy week.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 8/13, 8:44 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez has an inflamed rotator cuff in his right shoulder, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He is optimistic he will not require a second surgery in as many off-seasons to address it. He missed his third straight start Tuesday because of soreness in his ailing shoulder, but stated that this injury, as well as the pain that derailed his spring training, is not related to the minor surgery he had last September on the same shoulder. That was a simple cleanup of the joint near the cuff. He added, "This is just going to take some rest and rehab when we get to the off-season. I'll have a chance to really get it strong and be ready."

Our View: He did extensive throwing during infield practice Tuesday, and could be able to play tonight against the Reds.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 8/11, 11:47 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez is out of Monday's lineup due to his shoulder ailment, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View: Sanchez had an ice pack strapped to his right shoulder this morning. He has been hitting well as of late, with three multi-hit efforts over his last seven games.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsThursday 8/7, 7:56 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez has been hot since the All-Star break, as he is hitting .400 (22-for-55) with three doubles, three homers, and nine RBI over 15 games, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: Keep him active in fantasy lineups while he is hot (and healthy).
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSunday 8/3, 1:49 PM CT
For the second straight day, Pittsburgh infielder Freddy Sanchez took full team batting practice, according to MLB.com. He also increased the intensity of his running drills, running sprints and cutting around the bases for the first time since exiting last Sunday's game with back spasms.

Our View: Manager John Russell cleared Sanchez to pinch-hit for the Pirates on Sunday. And if necessary, Russell said that Sanchez could be inserted in as part of a double switch if he is needed on the field.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 7/30, 7:53 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez missed a second full game due to back spasms Tuesday, but the Pirates are targeting Friday for his return (against the Cubs), according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: Sanchez has been hitting very well as of late, as he recorded five straight multi-hit games from July 21-25, and it looks like fantasy owners will be able to pencil him back into lineups for the upcoming week.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSunday 7/27, 2:00 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez was forced out of Sunday's game in the second inning due to back spasms, according to the AP. While running out a groundout in the bottom of the first, Sanchez pulled up lame and was removed from the game.

Our View: He was replaced by Luis Rivas at second base. We will keep you posted when more details surface regarding the severity of the injury.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 7/23, 7:31 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez battled through injuries this season but is seemingly finally on track as he has registered three hits in three of his last four games, and has homered in each of his last two, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Sanchez said, "I just feel better up there. I'm looking for the pitch I can hit, and I'm getting a good swing on it. It's obviously taken a lot longer than I wanted, but I really can't look back at the first half."

Our View: Sanchez should be penciled into your lineups again, and it looks like fantasy owners may be rewarded for their patience over the second half of the season.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 7/22, 10:18 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez, who had a three-run, inside-the-park homer in Monday’s 9-3 win, went 3-for-5 with another home run and two more RBIs on Tuesday.

Our View: Sanchez has eight home runs in his last 12 games at Minute Maid Park.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 7/21, 10:56 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez capped off a huge ninth inning for the Pirates on Monday by hitting a three-run, inside-the-park homer. The second baseman went 3-for-6 with two runs and four RBI in the win.

Our View: It wasn't conventional, but we'll take it. Most fantasy owners have given up on Freddy by this point, which is reasonable. It wouldn't be too shocking, though, if he shook off a bad first half and showed up over the remaining months.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSunday 7/20, 8:35 AM CT
Manager John Russell has stated that he will keep Freddy Sanchez in the second spot in the batting order despite his struggles at the plate, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Russell said, "Yeah, we'd like to get Freddy going. But you also have to look at how the lineup balances out. Best case scenario: Freddy hits in the two-hole, and we've got a very potent top of the order. If we move him to the bottom, now we're looking at too many potential outs in one spot. If Freddy's not hitting where he is now, we've got Nate McLouth and Ryan Doumit right there."

Our View: Sanchez is only hitting .154 in July, and his .256 on-base percentage ranks among the worst of everyday players in the league. Russell does have faith that Sanchez will regain his form, and he notably went 3-for-4 with a double on Saturday. Keep him stashed in NL-only leagues.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 7/16, 10:50 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez was held out of the lineup for the final two games before the All-Star break due to a slump that has seen his average dip all the way to .226, .084 points below the .310 mark he entered the season with, according to Yahoo Sports.

Our View: A simplistic way of looking at things would be to say that Sanchez has hit in terrible luck this season given a BABIP mark of .248, .074 points below his career .322 mark, a number that he has actually bettered in each of the last two seasons. His line drive rate remains unchanged, and he is hitting fewer balls in the air, so it would seem that a rebound could be in the cards.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 7/8, 8:11 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez rode the pine for the third time in five games on Monday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Luis Rivas took his place in the lineup.

Our View: Sanchez is only batting .186 since June 1, and should be placed on your bench as well until he proves to be effective again.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 7/5, 9:54 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez was out of the lineup for the second straight game on Friday. He is in a slump due to a hitch in his swing. "Something's got to change, because I'm not getting it done," Sanchez informs the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "I'm working every day and, hopefully, I can turn this thing around." The second baseman has been dealing with right shoulder soreness for much of the season.

Our View: Many fantasy owners have given up on Sanchez at this point, and we can't blame them. Hopefully a few days off will help him relax. Freddy hit very well over the second half of 2006 and 2007, so he bears watching.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 5/12, 2:53 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez went 1-for-3 and collected three RBI in Monday's 5-0 win over the Braves. His hit went for a double, his ninth of the season.

Our View: His injured right shoulder has been acting up on him again, but it did not stop him from generating solid numbers today. There is still concern for roto-owners that the ailment could eventually send him to the DL this season.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSunday 5/11, 9:44 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez's injured right shoulder is acting up again. He aggravated the ailment last week, but he has been playing through the pain, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. "There's a lot of pain in there. But I've just got to go out there and do the best I can with what I've got," Sanchez explains.

Our View: Freddy has been hitting well lately, and the injury is most notable when he is trying to throw. The big worry for fantasy owners is that the ailment will eventually cause the Pirates to put him on the DL or lead to another surgery.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsFriday 5/9, 10:56 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez went 2-for-4 with three RBI and is 9-for-17 in four games since he moved from No. 2 to the leadoff spot.

Our View: While fantasy owners are thrilled with his production, the Pirates are enthralled. The team has won all four games since the batting order was juggled.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsThursday 5/8, 3:58 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez went 3-for-5 with two runs scored in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Giants.

Our View: He has scored seven runs over seven games in May, and the Pirates are 4-3 over the span.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 5/6, 10:02 PM CT
The top of the order provided a strong lift in Pittsburgh's 12-6 win over the San Francisco Giants this evening. 2B Freddy Sanchez went 3-for-4 with three singles and a walk, totaling two RBIs and two runs scored. OF Nate McLouth followed going 3-for-5 at the plate with two home runs for three RBIs on the evening.

Our View: That's five runs scored from the first two batters in the order, a strong effort that bolstered an offensive explosion for the Pirates.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 5/6, 5:38 PM CT
The Pirates have tweaked their lineup a bit. Freddy Sanchez will bat leadoff on Tuesday, and Nate McLouth will move down to second, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. "This may get (Sanchez) going a little bit," manager John Russell explains.

Our View: This news doesn't really affect fantasy leagues. If anything, we hope McLouth will see more RBI chances.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsThursday 5/1, 8:42 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez hit his first home run of the season on Thursday, though it was his only hit of the day.

Our View: This is better news than it might seem because it might signal that his shoulder truly has regained the required strength needed to return to the .300 hitter he has been the past few years. This is a potential buy low opportunity you might want to look into to.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 4/23, 7:56 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez may only be batting .224 on the year, but things have improved of late as he has hit in 4-straight games and seven of his last nine, this according to MLB.com. "Freddy is going to hit. It's no secret. He's hit his whole life," manger John Russell said. "Whether he gets three hits tonight or tomorrow, it's going to happen. It's inevitable."

Our View: Sanchez is an established .300 hitter but that's when he is healthy. His shoulder still seems to be giving him trouble, and until he can get over the hump there he might continue to produce unevenly at the plate.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 4/21, 8:51 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez isn't hitting well, but he isn't about to blame his surgically repaired right shoulder. "This is the best my shoulder has felt since the beginning of the season," Sanchez tells the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "At this point, I think it's more mental than mechanical. I've got to take responsibility and do it on the field, and right now, I'm not getting it done."

Our View: Sanchez also hit poorly last April but ended up turning in a fine season. We're being patient with the second baseman and 2006 batting champ.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 4/15, 12:34 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez went 3-for-5 with three singles in Monday's win over the Dodgers. He managed to avoid scoring or contributing an RBI.

Our View: Sanchez has been dealing with shoulder soreness and came into the game with only two hits over his last 24 at-bats. So, we can't be too picky, right?
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 4/14, 8:42 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez is listed as the starter at second base and the second hitter for Monday's game against the Dodgers. He has been dealing with right shoulder pain and been in and out of the lineup.

Our View: Fantasy owners will need to continue to be patient with Sanchez, who also endured an awful April in 2007.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 4/14, 12:29 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez was given Sunday off, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He is still bothered by shoulder pain and Manager Russell noted, "We're not going to continue to just run him out there every day. It's a cold day, and it's a day game after a night game. Every day he's feeling a little better. Some days are better than others."

Our View: Sanchez has been limited to seven hits over 35 at-bats so far, but his average should climb as he continues to progress from his shoulder ailment.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSunday 4/13, 12:40 PM CT
Pittsburgh 2B Freddy Sanchez is not on the field for the Pirates today, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Sanchez has been bothered by a sore right shoulder since spring training and was held out today simply to give him a rest. He is expected to return to the starting lineup on Monday.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 4/7, 12:32 PM CT

Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSunday 4/6, 11:12 AM CT

Sanchez said this about his ailment, "It has not gotten any worse, but it has just not gotten any better. It's not where it needs to be." Sanchez has been solid in limited action as he has collected five hits over 12 at-bats, and hopefully he can return soon.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsFriday 4/4, 4:33 PM CT

Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsFriday 4/4, 7:21 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez might get the night off on Friday after playing only five innings on Thursday. He has lingering soreness in his right shoulder, and the issue was exacerbated by the cold weather. "We want to make sure the shoulder doesn't get irritated again," manager John Russell informs the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "We don't expect any of our guys to play 162 games, and there's a chance we'll give Freddy a day off." Luis Rivas or Chris Gomez would start if Sanchez were out on Friday.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsThursday 4/3, 8:19 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez had to leave Thursday's game after the fifth inning with an undisclosed injury. Chances are he had some pain in his surgically repaired shoulder that gave him problems this spring, but check back for updates to make sure. Luis Rivas took Sanchez's spot at second.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsThursday 4/3, 11:28 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez continues to have no problems at all with his previously ailing shoulder, according to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. Sanchez has five hits over nine at-bats this season, and is using a three-quarters motion on his throws to keep comfortable.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 4/2, 9:42 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez went 2-for-4 on Wednesday to increase his season average to .556 (5-for-9). So much for his shoulder bothering him huh? Sanchez will hit .300 and hopefully provide enough pop to make him a standout at the second base position this year.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 4/2, 7:43 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez, troubled by his surgically repaired shoulder all spring training, reports that his shoulder is finally pain-free, this according to MLB.com. In order to ease the pain, he has adopted a new throwing motion. "Obviously, I don't feel too comfortable with it," he said. "But I am on the field and can throw the ball and it doesn't hurt. Hopefully, maybe, as time goes on and I strengthen it and it feels better, then I get to where my normal arm slot is, or closer to it." Sanchez was able to hit all spring even with the injury, so as long as he is pain free on defense he should be able to produce the .300+ average we have come to expect from him.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 4/1, 10:45 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez missed most of spring training with a shoulder injury, but he was able to start on opening day against Atlanta, and he wasn't slowed by the ailment, as he went 3-for-5, while drawing one walk. If he stays healthy, he should maintain a solid batting average and generate plenty of RBI's in an improved Pirates' offense.

"Obviously that's at [manager John Russell's] discretion, but we went through a lot of work and I'm ready." Freddy Sanchez will take field work on Friday and play second base in a minor-league game, this according to Pittsburgh Post Gazette. The Pirates former batting champion will test his ailing right shoulder. It will be Sanchez's first action in the field since March 21, after which he complained of significant pain and sought a second medical opinion. Unless Sanchez has a significant setback, he is expected to be on the opening-day roster Monday in Atlanta, even if only as a pinch-hitter.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 3/25, 1:47 PM CT
The shoulder pain lingers for Freddy Sanchez, according to MLB.com. One day after being examined by orthopedist James Andrews, Freddy Sanchez was back in the McKechnie Field Clubhouse on Tuesday and was still showing frustration at the lingering pain in his right shoulder. Sanchez reportedly took infield practice with the team during morning drills, though he limited his throwing to just mild tosses. He then went over to Pirate City, where he participated in the Pirates' Minor League game solely as a hitter. Sanchez stated that he has no current plans to receive a cortisone shot for the pain, but instead plans to let his shoulder work to heal itself on its own. Sanchez remains a risky fantasy prospect heading into opening day.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 3/24, 2:02 PM CT
The Pirates team website reports that the news was encouraging out of Birmingham, Ala. early Monday. Noted orthopedist James Andrews offers Pirates second baseman Freddy Sanchez a second opinion which resulted in positive news. Andrews told the Pirates there was no structural damage in Sanchez's right shoulder. Andrews confirmed that the pain Sanchez has been dealing with when throwing is simply a result of inflammation around Sanchez's right shoulder rotator cuff. Rest and strengthening are the solutions to the the second baseman's ailment. How long that will take, and when Sanchez can return to full-time active duty have yet to be determined.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsMonday 3/24, 10:35 AM CT

Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 3/22, 4:50 PM CT
Following an ealier report, it appears the Pirates have shut all activity by Freddy Sanchez and will have his right shoulder examined by noted orthopedist James Andrews in Birmingham, AL, on Monday, according to MLB.com. Pirates GM Neal Huntington confirmed on Saturday that Sanchez is dealing with inflammation around his right rotator cuff as the second bagger tries to work his way back to full strength after off-season surgery. The good news is that no structural damage has been identified by the team's doctors and that the inflammation is not the result of a problem with the minor arthroscopic surgery Sanchez had at the close of last season. Huntington also added that the pain is situation-specific, meaning that Sanchez feels no pain in his shoulder except for when he throws. However, after discomfort escalated to pain when Sanchez played in the field on Friday, the Pirates decided to seek a second opinion on the diagnosis. Let's see what the good doctor says, for his words will dictate what the Pirates and Sanchez do moving forward.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsFriday 3/21, 5:25 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez awoke on Friday with lingering soreness in his surgically repaired shoulder and the feeling that he might have to begin the year on the DL, this according to the AP. “I’m very concerned now. I was hoping after the first day (in the field Wednesday) that this day would be easier, and I’d be able to work through it a little better. But it kind of seemed like it was worse,” Sanchez said.“I’m giving it all I can out there and trying to play through it, but it doesn’t feel right. It felt a little different today, the more I threw I got worse...It’s not good.” Sanchez continues to swing the bat well, but since the Pirates don't play softball or in the AL, the DH isn't an option. If he can't go, and that's starting to look like a real possibility, the team would likely turn to Luis Rivas who is hitting .317 in spring
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 3/19, 11:23 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez returned to the field on Wednesday after being shelved due to lingering soreness in his surgically repaired right shoulder, but he was unsatisfied (he played five innings against the Yankees), according to MLB.com. Sanchez commented, "It's obviously not where I'd like it to be. I kind of didn't let the ball go like I wanted to. Hopefully next time out I can do a little better, and hopefully it will feel a little better. As a player, you know what you're used to. We are a little bit away from that. It just didn't feel the way I wanted it to feel, but it's the first day, too. Hopefully we can just get better from here." Manager John Russell stated that assuming all goes fine for Sanchez on Thursday, he anticipates placing him back into the lineup on Friday and then gradually stretching him out to where he can ultimately stay in for the entirety of a game.

Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsFriday 3/14, 9:06 PM CT
In his first outing of the spring, 2B Freddy Sanchez earned praise as one of very few bright spots in the 0-5 shutout loss to the Cincinnati Reds, hitting 2-for-4 and serving as the only player with multiple hits for the Pirates. Sanchez has been rehabbing from shoulder surgery and worked as the DH to avoid unneeded strain as a fielder. The Pirates will continue to use caution in getting Sanchez back on the field, but today’s game is a good sign of things to come.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsThursday 3/13, 1:49 PM CT
Freddy Sanchez is close to making his spring debut, according to the team website. The Pirates second baseman continues his rehab from shoulder surgery and all reports indicate he is on schedule. "He's been doing all of his work, taking a lot of groundballs," manager John Russell said. Sanchez will hit for average, but that's about it. He won't be a top contributor in any other category, including stolen bases (0 in 2007).
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsSunday 3/9, 6:15 PM CT
Major League Baseball is approaching the midpoint of Spring Training games and Freddy Sanchez has yet to be cleared to play. The Pirates will not rush their second baseman and his shoulder injury, but Sanchez is continuing to increase how hard he throws and is taking ground balls during the team's infield work before games. Sanchez has no timetable for when he will be cleared to return to the field.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco GiantsThursday 3/6, 7:21 PM CT

I’m doing a little throwing program here and see if that’s going to help. But I don’t know where I am as far as game-wise or when I can be back or anything like that," according to a report on the AP. Sanchez seems truly worried about his progression from off-season surgery, but the team is still hopeful that he will be able to throw in time to play once the season starts. Regardless, this news is discouraging.

"Obviously there's going to be some pain and discomfort, a little tweak here, a little tweak there, but I've got to get over that stage." Although it is less likely now that it had been that Sanchez will start the year on the DL, he still may not have enough at-bats under his belt to be ready.

That's the unfortunate part, I can't do anything except do all my rehab, do everything I can in the training room to get out there. In a way, it's out of my control, which stinks. You've got to let it heal and when it's ready, it's ready."
