Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresFriday 2/5, 1:09 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba has officially signed with the San Diego Padres, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

Our View: It is one-year deal worth $1.25 million. The two sides have a mutual $3.5 million option for 2011. Torrelaba will almost certainly be San Diego's starter this season, and while he will have value in NL-only leagues, he is going to have prove his .291 average from limited duty last season was not a fluke before meriting a look in most mixed formats.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresWednesday 2/3, 10:46 AM CT
Yorvit Torrealba appears to be very close to signing a deal with the Padres, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.

Our View: If he indeed signs with San Diego, you can expect Torrealba to serve as the team's primary catcher, relegating Nick Hundley to backup duties. Still, you can't be in love with Torrealba's fantasy prospects, given that he'd be moving from a hitter-friendly park in Colorado to a pitcher-friendly one in San Diego.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresMonday 2/1, 4:37 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba has received a one-year offer from the Padres, according to Buster Olney's (ESPN) twitter page.

Our View: Torrealba would like to engage the Mets, but they do not have the funds to make a deal. He would be playing his home games at pitcher-friendly Petco Park if he ends up inking with San Diego.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresTuesday 1/19, 4:30 PM CT
Spurned by their number two offseason target, catcher Bengie Molina, the Mets now have their sights set on former Rockies backstop Yorvit Torrealba, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

Our View: After Molina took less money to stay in San Francisco, the Mets are really reeling. Torrealba hit .291 in 213 at-bats in 2009, but that was in hitter's haven Coors Field. A move to the spacious Citi Field would seem to be a disaster for all involved parties. Stay tuned.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresMonday 1/11, 8:05 PM CT
The Giants have reportedly talked to Yorvit Torrealba, according to Jeff Fletcher's (Fanhouse) twitter page.

Our View: Torrealba could serve as a good mentor to Buster Posey, and batted .291 with Colorado in 2009. He previously played for San Francisco from 2001-04, and again in 2005.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresThursday 12/31, 7:16 AM CT
The Denver Post is reporting that the Rockies are close to ending contract talks with free-agent catcher Yorvit Torrealba.

Our View: Torrealba wants two years and $6 million, but it looks like the Rockies will be signing Miguel Olivo for less. Torrealba is on the Giants radar, and while he did hit .291 last season (in 64 games) he's not a reliable everyday option behind the dish.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresWednesday 12/16, 11:49 PM CT
Talks between the Rockies and catcher Yorvit Torrealba have broken down, according to Fox Sports.

Our View: Barring a last second miracle, he will not be back in Colorado in 2010. After hitting .291 in 64 games last season, he should have no trouble finding suitors, but will have trouble finding ones willing to pay him the $6-$6.5 million over two years that he is seeking.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresTuesday 12/15, 7:18 PM CT
According to the Denver Post, Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd is not optimistic that the team will be able to come to an agreement with catcher Yorvit Torrealba.

Our View: The two sides are only $400,000 apart, which is chump change in MLB, but it doesn't sound like either party wants to budge. "I just don't think it's going to work out," O'Dowd said. "Negotiations can always change, but right now I'm not optimistic." Torrealba is looking for a two-year deal worth $6 million, but if he can't be locked up, the Rox could target free agent Miguel Olivo.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresMonday 12/14, 10:42 PM CT
Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com states that Yorvit Torrealba could be an option for the Mets if they are unable to reel in Bengie Molina.

Our View: The 31-year-old backstop would be interested in negotiating with New York. He batted .291 with Colorado last season, but would obviously not make a sizable impact like Molina.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresTuesday 12/8, 7:33 PM CT
According to Thomas Harding on Twitter, the Rockies have offered catcher Yorvit Torrealba a two-year contract.

Our View: Torrealba had a great season, hitting .324/.373/.394 with two homers and 31 RBI last season, so there is no guarantee that he'll accept the Rockies offer. He may get a more lucrative deal from another club due to his fine campaign and will likely hold out to see what the market has to offer. This does however mean that the Giants are out of the bidding, as they didn't want to sign a backstop for more than one year.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresTuesday 11/24, 8:00 PM CT
MLB.com reports that the Toronto Blue Jays are interested in catcher Yorvit Torrealba.

Our View: The Giants are also very interested in the former Rockie, so this could spark a bidding war for his services. Rod Barajas, the team's primary catcher for the last two years, is a free agent so Torrealba represents Toronto's best option. Expect the Jays to try and negotiate a multi-year deal.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresMonday 11/23, 11:29 PM CT
MLBlogs.com is reporting that the San Francisco Giants have some interest in catcher Yorvit Torrealba. The team is looking for a veteran to split time with rookie Buster Posey this season.

Our View: It will be interesting to see if anything comes of this, as Torrealba would be in pretty much the same situation in San Fran as Colorado next season. Both teams have young catchers that will play next season, and Torrealba would like to be the primary option wherever he goes.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresThursday 10/15, 6:11 PM CT
InsideTheRockies.com does not expect Yorvit Torrealba to be the Rockies' starting catcher in 2010.

Our View: The site says he could be back with the team in a part-time role, but believes his days as the team's primary catcher are over. It's looking more likely by the day that 2010 will usher in the Chris Iannetta era behind the backstop in Denver.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresMonday 10/12, 9:07 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba drove in what Colorado thought were the game-winning runs in the eighth inning on Monday night, but Colorado collapsed in the ninth, as the Phillies rallied for a 5-4 win in Denver. The loss eliminated the Rockies from the playoffs.

Our View: Torrealba finished the playoffs with a .357 average. After hitting .291 in the regular season, he will again likely be Colorado's starting catcher in 2010.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresThursday 10/8, 5:38 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba took Cole Hamels deep for a two-run first inning home run on Thursday, a shot that would prove to be the difference in Colorado's 5-4 win in Philadelphia.

Our View: Torrealba caught every game for the Rockies in their miracle 2007 playoff run, and he looks primed to do the same in 2009.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresSaturday 9/5, 8:27 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba has been named the Rockies' starting catcher going forward, according to the Denver Post. Skipper Jim Tracy said, "You have to give credit where credit is due. Over the last 10 days or so, Yorvit has taken the bull by the horns. I am not being fair to the rest of the guys in black shirts if I do not recognize that. The way he is playing he gets to take the bulk of playing time right now."

Our View: Torrealba is better defensively than Chris Iannetta, and also has been hitting better than Iannetta as of late.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresWednesday 8/26, 7:18 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba has avoided a suspension for his heated one-field dispute with umpire Bill Miller during Monday's game against the Giants, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: The veteran catcher will still likely be dealt a fine. Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, closer Huston Street, and pitching coach Bob Apodaca also argued with the umpires during that game, which the Rockies won in 14 innings.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresWednesday 7/1, 6:59 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba was reinstated from the restricted list on Wednesday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Phillips has been out for a month after the kidnapping of his son in his native Venezuela in early June. He will serve as Chris Iannetta's backup, and holds no fantasy value.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresWednesday 6/24, 10:04 AM CT
Yorvit Torrealba has been made available for trades, but there is little interest, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: After a career year in 2007, Torrealba has hit just .242 since the beginning of 2008, and hit only eight home runs while driving in 38. He is not a viable fantasy option at this time.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresMonday 6/22, 10:38 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba is set to begin his minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Colorado Springs Tuesday, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: He will work five games during his stint. He was away from the Rockies to deal with the abduction (and safe return) of his son in Venezuela. He won't hold much fantasy value upon his return to the Rockies while serving behind starter Chris Iannetta at catcher.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresSunday 6/14, 1:35 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba returned to the Rockies on Sunday following an 11 day absence to tend to the abduction and return of his son in Venezuela, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: Torrealba's son was returned safely and the catcher seemed to be in high spirits according to the article. He remains a backup catcher with no fantasy value as long as Chris Ianetta is healthy.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresMonday 6/8, 1:10 PM CT
The Denver Post reports that catcher Yorvit Torrealba will return from the bereavement list this weekend after the kidnapping of his son and join the Rockies in Seattle for their series against the Mariners.

Our View: With Chris Iannetta also missing time, the Rockies need catching help, and Torrealba's return, coupled with the safe return of his son, is good news for the Rockies. In 19 games this season, Torrelaba is batting .230 with two home runs and seven RBIs.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresThursday 6/4, 2:23 PM CT
Updating a previous report, according to the The Sports Network the "personal reason" for which Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba left the team on Tuesday was the kidnapping of his son and brother-in-law in his native Venezuela. They have since been returned safely, however. There is no word on when Torrealba will rejoin the team.

Our View: This is obviously a terrifying and traumatic experience for Torrealba and his family and a rushed return is unlikely. Hopefully the effects do not linger and he is able to come back to the field with a clear mind. Our thoughts go out to his family.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresTuesday 6/2, 5:53 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba left the team on Tuesday to fly home to Venezuela to attend to personal matters according to the Denver Post.

Our View: Paul Phillips will start in his place tonight, and catcher Edwin Bellorin has been recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs to take his place on the roster.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresFriday 5/29, 11:40 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba was 2-for-4 and had the only RBI of the game in the Rockies' 3-0 win over the Padres on Friday.

Our View: In a game that featured no extra-base hits, Torrealba got the job done. With Chris Iannetta on the DL, he will see plenty of at-bats for a while and can be a nice stopgap at catcher until Iannetta returns.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresWednesday 5/6, 11:00 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba was 2-for-2 with a home run, two walks, two RBI, and three runs scored as the Rockies beat the Rockies 11-1 on Wednesday.

Our View: Torrealba is a very good No. 2 catcher for Colorado, but his at bats are too few and far between for him to be considered a fantasy option.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresWednesday 3/25, 9:35 AM CT
Yorvit Torrealba is reportedly on the Rockies' trading block, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: Chris Iannetta is the No. 1 catcher, and Sal Fasano has fared well in spring training. The Rockies have been asking if other teams need a catcher. He is hard to move with $4MM left on his contract though.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresTuesday 3/10, 8:07 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBI as the Rockies out-slugged the A's 14-7 on Tuesday.

Our View: After playing in a career-high 113 games in 2007, Torrealba played in just 70 last season while splitting time with Chris Iannetta. And he very well may find himself in a similar position in '09, with veteran Sal Fasano possibly joining the mix if the Rockies decide to carry three catchers.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresSaturday 2/28, 10:04 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba had a decent day for the Rockies on Saturday, going 1-for-3 with a double and two runs.

Our View: Torrealba is expected to be the Rockies' backup catcher in 2009, so he isn't likely to have much fantasy value.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresFriday 2/20, 9:21 AM CT
Yorvit Torrealba reported to camp with the Rockies, according to the Rocky Mountain News. His arrival was delayed due to the death of his cousin.

Our View: Torrealba will be a backup catcher in 2009, unless Chris Iannette struggles or gets hurt.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresTuesday 9/2, 11:25 AM CT
Yorvit Torrealba met with team doctors Monday and he expects to have surgery Wednesday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, according to the Rocky Mountain News. He is expecting a speedy recovery and said, "I was told I will be able to walk out of the room when it is over."

Our View: Torrealba will not be missed as a fantasy catcher during the stretch run in September, as he merely ranked as a No. 2 option in NL-only leagues.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresSunday 8/31, 12:03 AM CT
Yorvit Torrealba has been placed on the 15-day DL due to a torn meniscus in his left knee, according to the AP. Catcher Adam Melhuse has been recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs as the corresponding move.

Our View: Torrealba may opt for season-ending surgery, and does not believe the injury is going to get better. Torrealba won't be missed much by Colorado as the club will be in good shape with Chris Iannetta at catcher. He won't be missed by fantasy owners either, with a .246 batting average and only six homers over 70 games.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresSaturday 8/30, 4:17 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba has a torn meniscus in his left knee and is considering potentially season-ending surgery, according to the Denver Post. He said, "I don't mean to be negative, but I don't think it's going to get better. I hope it responds. But I have played with this for around six weeks. It got a little better, now it's back to the same spot that it was."

Our View: The team will be in good shape with Chris Iannetta at catcher if Torrealba ultimately has surgery, and fantasy owners won't miss much, as he only holds a .246 batting average with six homers over 70 games.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresFriday 8/15, 8:32 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba's left knee felt much better Friday and he went through normal pregame activity, according to MLB.com. Manager Clint Hurdle said Torrealba may start on Saturday.

Our View: Torrealba hasn't played since Sunday, but with the way Chris Iannetta has hit this year, the Rox haven't missed him.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresThursday 8/14, 11:02 PM CT
Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba has a small meniscus tear, located in his left knee, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresThursday 8/14, 3:31 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba has been scratched from Thursday's lineup due to an undisclosed injury, according to the AP.

Our View: Chris Ianetta replaced him in the lineup. The team recalled catcher Adam Melhuse from Colorado Springs. We will keep you posted when more details are known regarding Torrealba's status.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresWednesday 7/9, 9:25 AM CT
Yorvit Torrealba is believed to be on the Marlins' radar following the injury to Matt Treanor, but the $5.2 million remaining on his contract remains an issue, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: The only way a deal would seemingly get done would be for the Rockies to eat part of Torralba's salary, which the club is not interested in doing. David Ross of the Reds is also on the Marlins' list of targets.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresThursday 7/3, 8:43 AM CT
The Denver Post reports that the Rockies have told catcher Yorvit Torrealba that they are willing to listen to trade offers for him.

Our View: Apparently the news got a rise out of Yorvit. Torrealba went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double on Wednesday. He turns 30 later this month and could become an impact player at his position if he lands in the right situation.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresSunday 6/22, 5:24 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba hit a home run on Sunday that produced the only run for the Rockies in their 3-1 loss to the Mets.

Our View: Torrealba has hits in 5-straight games, though Chris Ianetta continues to eat into his playing time rendering his value as suspect except in the deepest of leagues.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresSaturday 6/14, 9:31 AM CT
Yorvit Torrealba is expected to get his three-game suspension reduced to two games, and he will likely serve the penalty on Sunday and Monday, the Denver Post notes. He got in trouble for scuffling with Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp.

Our View: FYI for fantasy owners in NL-only leagues. Torrealba is losing a lot of time to Chris Iannetta as it is.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresThursday 6/5, 12:02 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba has been fined for three games due to his altercation on Tuesaday with Matt Kemp and the Dodgers, according to the AP. Matt Kemp was frustrated by an eighth inning strikeout and following what he thought was a hard tag, Kemp pushed Torrealba, who immediately pushed back before both players ended up tackling each other to the ground, leading to both benches clearing. He has also been fined an undisclosed amount of money.

Our View: His suspension could start Friday, when the Rockies host the Brewers, unless he decides to appeal.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresFriday 5/16, 8:22 AM CT
Yorvit Torrealba's agent, Melvin Roman, has filed a grievance against the Mets over the collapse of the catcher's contract negotiations last winter, according to the Denver Post. Roman alleges that Torrealba signed a term sheet on a three-year, $14.4 million deal when the Mets backed out over concerns about the catcher's right shoulder. The Mets never publicly said that Torrealba failed his physical.

Our View: We'll let you know what comes of this, but Torrealba has bigger problems with his .228 batting average and Chris Iannetta gaining more and more playing time.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresSunday 5/11, 8:18 AM CT
Yorvit Torrealba was told on Saturday that he is still the starting catcher even though Chris Iannetta is hitting better. "Chris (Iannetta) has had a wonderful start. Torry is our starter," manager Clint Hurdle tells the Denver Post. "Chris is going to find more playing time, and as the season goes on we will see how that develops."

Our View: The younger Iannetta is the future of the franchise behind the plate, but he still has to prove he's ready for the full-time gig. We expect these two backstops to continue splitting the load.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresMonday 4/21, 10:52 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba hit his second home run of the season on Monday as he went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Our View: Torrealba continues to be a somewhat productive option #2 at the catcher position for those of you in leagues that start two backstops.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresWednesday 3/19, 6:36 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba went 3-for-3 with an RBI (his seventh) against the White Sox, and raised his spring average to .462. He is off to a strong start and should be the Rockies' opening day catcher.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresThursday 3/13, 7:25 PM CT
Yorvit Torrealba went 1-for-3 on Thursday, and extended his spring hit streak to six games. He also notably knocked in two RBI with his hit. He should be the opening day starter at catcher.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresThursday 11/29, 10:32 AM CT
Yorvit Torrealba has agreed with the Rockes on a two-year contract worth over $7 million, according to ESPN.com. He should receive most of the playing time behind the plate for Colorado, with Chris Iannetta possibly seeing some action, as well. Torrealba has received much attention this offseason, and came very close to inking a three-year deal with the Mets earlier this month, but there's very little to get excited about for fantasy.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresTuesday 11/27, 11:59 AM CT
Yorvit Torrealba's agent, Melvin Roman, said Monday he hopes to have a deal done with the Rockies by the end of the week. "We're getting closer and I think we're moving toward an agreement, soon, I hope," Roman told the Denver Post. Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd confirmed that discussions have heated up, but he also stressed that it is not a done deal. "We still have interest in two other catchers," O'Dowd said, referring to former Paul Lo Duca and Michael Barrett. Torrealba nearly signed with the Mets 10 days ago, but those talks eventually fell apart.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresSaturday 11/17, 11:45 PM CT
The Mets have have broken off negotiations with Yorvit Torrealba, the AP reports. "We did not reach an agreement with Yorvit Torrealba. We are not in current ongoing negotiations with Yorvit Torrealba or his representatives," Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said Saturday night.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresThursday 11/15, 10:43 AM CT
The Mets have reportedly offered free agent catcher Yorvit Torrealba a three-year deal worth in the vicinity of $15 million. Torrealba is expected to make a decision today whether or not to accept the offer, according to the New York Post. The $15 million figure is reportedly roughly double the amount the Rockies are offering, so it would be surprising if Torrealba doesn't end up in Queens.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresWednesday 8/1, 2:51 AM CT
Yorvit Torrealba was given a rare day off Tuesday, the AP reports. He asserted himself as Colorado's main catcher during the month, hitting .391 in July. Chris Iannetta, meanwhile, is hitting just .184 this year.

Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresFriday 2/16, 11:56 AM CT
Yorvit Torrealba will have no throwing restrictions once he arrives at camp, the Denver Post reports. He had shoulder problems much of last year, and now he's fighting for a roster spot this spring; Chris Ianetta on paper looks like the team's starting catcher, and Javy Lopez was also brought in. "We think Yorvit's going to be fine, but we'll have to wait for the games to begin to know for sure," Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd said.
Yorvit Torrealba, C, San Diego PadresWednesday 12/13, 4:07 PM CT

Even though Danny Ardoin was activated from the disabled list yesterday, Yorvit Torrealba will continue seeing most of the action behind the plate for now, according to the Rocky Mountain News. "I am trying to give Yorvit the same opportunity Danny had at the end of last season and start of this season, to see where it takes him," manager Clint Hurdle said.
