Casey Fossum, P, Chicago CubsFriday 7/3, 2:48 PM CT
According to MLBlogs.com, the Chicago Cubs have signed pitcher Casey Fossum to a Minor League contract. He has reported to Triple-A Iowa to start his Cubs' career.

Our View: Fossum opted out of his contract with the Yankees a few weeks ago, so now he gets a fresh start with the Cubbies. He doesn't figure to have any fantasy value this season, and this move doesn't affect that much.

The Times-Tribune is reporting that pitcher Casey Fossum has exercised an out in his contract and opted to become a free agent. Fossum was pitching with the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate, and was was 12th in the International League in ERA.

Our View: Fossum had been pitching well for the Yankees (Triple-A version), but he knows that there is little opportunity in New York for his advancement. He may get some looks on the free agent market, but it would be a long shot that he would have any fantasy value this season.

Our View: Fossum didn't pitch that poorly: one run in 3.1 inning with four strikeouts. He was likely demoted because the Mets wanted to call up 40-year old Japanese reliever Ken Takahashi.

The Mets purchased Casey Fossum's contract from Triple-A Buffalo, according to the Star-Ledger. The club designated Nelson Figueroa for assignment as the adjoining move.

Our View: The 31-year-old vet holds a career 5.47 ERA, and is not going to hold much fantasy value as a long-reliever with the Mets.
