Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 3/17, 11:58 PM CT
Brandon Phillips went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI in Wednesday's 8-2 loss to the Indians.

Our View: Phillips has struggled this spring, hitting just .136 to this point, but his job as the Reds' everyday starting second baseman is safe. He should be a nice source of power and steals at a thin position.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 11/10, 11:24 PM CT
According to AOL Fanhouse, the Reds are in financial trouble and may have to unload some significant salary this offseason, meaning Brandon Phillips' future with the team could be in jeopardy.

Our View: The Reds were right around $71 million last season, but apparently need to get it down to about $65 million in 2010. They have a lot of young up and coming talent, and certainly won't be parting with any of that, so guys like Phillips, Bronson arroyo and Aaron Harang could be on the trading block this hot stove season.

Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsThursday 9/10, 5:29 PM CT
Brandon Phillips went 3-for-4 and drove in the only run in the Reds' 5-1 loss to the Rockies on Thursday.

Brandon Phillips had his first three-hit day since July 31 on Saturday, but the Reds still got blown out 11-4 by the Dodges at home.

MLB.com reports that Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips left Thursday's game in the third inning with a sore left wrist.

Our View: Phillips was hit by a pitch last Saturday and is likely feeling lingering effects from that. He was lifted for pinch hitter Drew Sutton, who then stayed in the game and played second base. Consider Phillips day-to-day.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 8/18, 6:37 PM CT

Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsSunday 8/16, 10:49 AM CT
Brandon Phillips has been scratched from Sunday's lineup with a sore left hand, according to beat writer Mark Sheldon's Twitter page. Phillips was hit on the hand Saturday, and it was too sore for him to play today.

Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 8/12, 10:11 PM CT
Brandon Phillips got the Reds only two RBI against Chris Carpenter on Wednesday night, as Cincinnati lost 5-2 in St. Louis.

Brandon Phillips was not in the lineup on Tuesday, one day after being admonished by manager Dusty Baker for not hustling, according to the Dayton Daily News.

Our View: It is almost certainly a one day punishment, so you can expect a fresh, hopefully wiser, Phillips to be back in the lineup tomorrow.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 7/21, 5:24 PM CT
Reds manager Dusty Baker "went off" on second baseman Brandon Phillips Monday night for not hustling in the team's game against the Dodgers, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: Phillips got thrown out in the first inning after lolly-gagging to second on a hit. Phillips has a history of show-boating and not hustling, so Monday's incident comes as little surprise. He remains one of the National League's top second basemen, though, batting .271 with 14 home runs and 63 RBI in 2009.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsThursday 7/9, 9:43 PM CT

Brandon Phillips drove in the Reds' only run of the game with a sacrifice fly on Sunday. He was 0-for-3 in the 4-1 loss to the White Sox.

Our View: Phillips has been hot and cold this season. He hit just .188 in April, but managed to bat .352 in May. June has been right in between and he's leveled off with a .279 average overall. Don't fiddle with him in your lineup. He's a strong enough player that if you leave him alone all season his numbers should be there in the end.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsFriday 6/19, 9:37 PM CT
Brandon Phillips carried the Reds offensively in Friday's 4-3 win over the White Sox at the Great American Ballpark, as he went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and three RBI.

Brandon Phillips did a bit of everything in Wednesday's 9-3 win over the Cardinals. He went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, two stolen bases, three runs scored, and three RBI.

Our View: Phillips' thumb appears to be healing up nicely and he should be ready to return to action on Friday.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 5/26, 4:56 PM CT
Updating a previous report, Brandon Phillips hit off a tee Tuesday and his broken thumb is progressing, according to MLBlogs.com.

Our View: Phillips has been slated to return to the lineup on Friday, so at least now fantasy owners have a timetable. Get ready to put him back in as he was starting to heat up before the injury.

The AP reports that Brandon Phillips could return to the lineup as early as Wednesday. He is suffering from a hairline fracture at the tip of his right thumb.

Our View: Phillips is not playing today, but he feels like he will not need a trip to the DL. He will play through the injury, but it is unclear what kind of affect this will have on his play. He should miss a few days, so keep him out for now.

Brandon Phillips went 1-for-5 with a three-run homer in Thursday's 12-5 loss to Philadelphia at the Great American Ballpark.

Brandon Phillips is heating up. The slugging second baseman went 2-for-4 with four RBI in the Reds' solid 10-3 win over Arizona on Wednesday.

Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 5/12, 11:54 PM CT
Brandon Phillips was 2-for-4 with a home run in the Reds' 3-1 win over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.

Our View: The homer was Phillips' sixth. While his power numbers are decent for a second baseman, he hasn't lived up to expectations this season. He's only hitting .265 and hasn't looked like a fantasy stud since 2007. Here's hoping he wasn't a one-year wonder.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsThursday 5/7, 8:27 PM CT
MLB.com is reporting that Brandon Phillips sat out Thursday's game against the Brewers with the flu. He was replaced by Jerry Hairston Jr.

Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsFriday 5/1, 9:31 PM CT
Brandon Phillips hit his third home run of the season on Friday as the Reds beat the Pirates 4-0. Phillips was 1-for-4 wth the homer and two RBI.

Our View: Phillips has been nothing short of terrible so far this season, but his home run tonight gives owners hope. Buy low on him right now if you can, because when he is on he is an elite second baseman.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsSunday 4/12, 4:05 PM CT
Brandon Phillips hit his first home run of the season and accounted for both RBI as the Reds beat the Pirates 2-0 on Sunday.

Our View: Phillips is now hitting .357 behind Joey Votto making for a nice 3-4 punch in the heart of the Reds order. He drew his fifth walk in today's game and kept his strike outs down to just two for the season.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsSaturday 3/21, 6:47 PM CT
According to MLB.com, Brandon Phillips was scratched from the lineup on Saturday due to flu-like symptoms. He is considered day-to-day.

Our View: This doesn't sound serious. Phillips shouldn't miss much time, and should go on to have another productive season as one of the top fantasy second basemen.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsSaturday 3/21, 2:51 PM CT
Brandon Phillips was scratched from today's game with flu-like symptoms, according to MLB.com.

Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 2/25, 7:26 AM CT
Brandon Phillips is fully recovered from his broken index finger, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Now healthy again, Phillips could potentially re-join the 30/30 club in 2009.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsThursday 2/19, 1:51 PM CT
Brandon Phillips is expected to bat cleanup with the Reds this season, according to MLB.com. Skipper Dusty Baker said, "Oh yeah -- he will be better. Brandon will have a good year. Everybody struggles sometimes that third or fourth year. Now Brandon will re-adjust to what they are throwing him. Sometimes they would not throw Brandon a lot of strikes. Sometimes when you are in the middle of it, you cannot see it, but when you are smart like Brandon and take some time away from it, you can step back and see things."

Our View: Cincinnati has a solid young supporting cast, and it would not be surprising to see Phillips re-join the 30/30 club this season, as he did in 2007.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsFriday 9/12, 4:59 PM CT
The AP reports that Brandon Phillips had two pins inserted into his right index finger on Friday to help repair the break in it. Phillips suffered the fracture when he was hit by a pitch on a bunt attempt in the 11th inning of Wednesday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers. He stayed in the contest and delivered the go-ahead RBI single later in the at-bat, lifting the Reds to a 5-4 victory.

Our View: Phillips, 27, posted a .261 batting average with 21 home runs, 23 stolen bases and 78 RBI in 141 games this campaign. Although a good season for a second baseman, the numbers were lower than most expectations. This surgery may have owners questioning his worth for next season, but it should not take a hit. The Reds will be more explosive next season and Phillips' numbers should benefit across the board.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 9/10, 10:08 AM CT
Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips broke his right index finger in a bunt attempt on Tuesday and he will miss the rest of the regular season, according to The Sports Network.

Our View: This is a significant blow to fantasy owners who certainly enjoyed Phillips' 20-20 season and 78 RBI.

Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsSunday 7/20, 5:57 PM CT

Phillips went 2-for-4 at the dish with his 16th homer of the season along with one stolen base (his 20th thus far) to total two RBIs and two runs scored on the day.

Our View: Phillips is hitting .277 through July with four stolen bases, three home runs, and 15 RBIs thus far. He's doing fantasy owners proud and helping the Reds stay respectable.

Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsSaturday 6/21, 3:39 PM CT

Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 6/11, 9:36 AM CT
Moving Brandon Phillips to shortstop is not an option for the Reds, Dusty Baker told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "No," Baker said. "I know everybody says that, and he could probably do it, but how many guys do you want out of position? You want one or you want two or three?"

Our View: The Reds have had a rash of injuries at short, but Jeff Keppinger should be back before too long.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 6/4, 11:15 PM CT
Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips went 1-for-3 with a walk against Philadelphia this evening, but more importantly, he swiped two bases that helped him earn two runs scored.

Our View: Phillips now carries 11 stolen bases on the season and has posted at least one hit in six of his last eight games.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsSunday 5/25, 9:10 PM CT
From time to time, professional baseball needs a marathon to spice things up a bit. Tonight, Cincinnati and San Diego put forth such an effort, needing 18 innings to complete their matchup, and in the end it was the visiting Reds taking it on the chin, 12-9. The players at the top of the order racked up eight or nine at-bats on the day, led by second baseman Brandon Phillips , going 3-for-8 at the dish with one walk and his ninth home run of the season to total two RBIs and three runs scored on the day, also throwing in a stolen base for good measure.

Our View: Phillips is no power monster by any means, but he's hitting .316 through the month of may and has flashed a bit of speed, swiping five bases along the way.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 5/20, 12:38 AM CT
Brandon Phillips had a big night on Monday as he went 4-for-5 at the plate and stole his seventh base of the season on the bases.

Our View: Phillips has six 2-hit or better games in his last 10 outings to boost his average up to .308. He continues to be in the middle of the second tier of second baseman behind Chase Utley.

Second baseman Brandon Phillips was out of the Friday starting lineup against the Mets due to a sore left calf, sustained on a foul ball Wednesday.

Our View: Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker said Phillips might have been available to pinch hit on Friday night. With the postponement of the game due to rain, Phillips is expected to be in the lineup during Saturday's double-header for at least one of the games.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsFriday 5/9, 6:08 PM CT
Brandon Phillips is not in Friday's starting lineup. The Reds are using Jerry Hairston Jr. at second base and hitting him second in the order.

Our View: Phillips is hitting .276 with 20 runs scored, 16 RBI, five stolen bases and six home runs. Far from All Star numbers but not the kind of funk that would get a player of his tools benched. It's likely Dusty Baker is giving Phillips a night off against Mike Pelfrey and the Mets.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 5/7, 3:37 PM CT
Brandon Phillips helped the Reds break out of their offensive funk on Wednesday afternoon by hitting his sixth home run of the season. Phillips left with a bruised left calf, sustained on a foul tip. The team is calling him day-to-day.

Our View: Phillips and the Reds offense has been stale as of late. The fifteen run performance against Chicago comes on the heels of being shutout by Carlos Zambrano on Tuesday. The Cincinnati second baseman now has 20 runs, 16 RBI and five stolen bases on the season.
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsSaturday 5/3, 9:47 PM CT
Brandon Phillips went 1-for-4 and registered the Reds' lone RBI in Saturday's 9-1 loss to Atlanta.

Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati RedsFriday 4/25, 8:19 PM CT

Phillips had a career year in 2007 hitting 30 home runs and recording 94 RBI. Reds manager Dusty Baker told MLB.com, "He's chasing balls and his concentration is not there." Since April 12, Phillips has hit .158 (6-for-38) and seen his batting average plummet to .250 from .320.

Our View: Edwin Encarnacion, who entered the game on a 14-game hitting streak, made his first appearance of the season as the Reds' cleanup hitter.

Brandon Phillips and Ken Griffey Jr. will swap spots in the batting order with Phillips moving into the third hole, this according to MLB.com.

Our View: This move now puts two lefties, Griffey and Adam Dunn back-to-back, but given the talents of both that means that there shouldn't be much concern of late inning specialists being effective. Plus, Phillips has struggled early on and his 30/30 talents seem better suited for the third hole than the cleanup role anyway.

Brandon Phillips came back from his day off on Thursday to pick up two hits and a run scored on Friday night. He was also thrown out for the second time on the bases trying to steal.

Our View: Phillips has only one home run and five RBI through 16 games so he has a long road to travel to justify the faith of those who chose him in the top-25 picks this season.

Brandon Phillips will be given the day off on Thursday, this according to MLB.com. "I think he needs it. He's played every day, every inning," manager Dusty Baker said. "You see him swinging at bad pitches and taking good ones. He's not trusting himself right now." Ryan Freel will play in his place.

Our View: Phillips is 6 for his last 31 (.194) and is without a hit in 10 AB, so perhaps a mental day off will allow him to get his game back on track.

With a three-run homer from Friday fresh in our memories, Brandon Phillips continued to carry a heavy stick, homering again and adding a two-run double on Saturday with four runs batted in, leading the way in a 13-8 win for the Reds over the split-squad Braves. Phillips also carried a sacrifice fly into the box score. The second baseman hit 30 homers and stole 32 bases last season, joining Eric Davis and Barry Larkin as the only players in franchise history to reach 30-30. Now the Reds are all but sold on moving him from 2nd in the batting order to 4th, and fantasy owners should adjust accordingly.

With the wind gusting up to 25 mph out to left field Friday in Sarasota, the Pirates banged out 14 hits and beat the Cincinnati Reds, 13-8. According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, in the first inning of the Reds loss, Brandon Phillips rode the strong breeze for a three-run homer. "It was 3-2 (count), so I might as well have told him what was coming," Van Benschoten said. "The wind helped." Phillips is one of the Big Three when fantasy owners speak of the best second baseman in mixed formats.

Reds skipper Dusty Baker told the Cincinnati Enquirer on Monday he will keep Brandon Phillips in the cleanup spot this season. "Brandon will probably hit third someday," Baker said. "But, right now, I need to him break up Junior and (Adam) Dunn." On who would hit from the No. 1 spot - Baker wasn't definitive. The three candidates are Jay Bruce, Ryan Freel and Norris Hopper, who are fighting for the starting center field role. Reds Insider, John Fay, doesn't give rookie Bruce any billing in his projected opening day lineup. Fay lists both Freel and Hopper as the two candidates to lead off.
