Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 3/14, 2:03 PM CT
Adam Wainwright had another mediocre spring outing on Sunday, allowing two runs and two walks in four innings of work against the Nationals.

Our View: His spring ERA is now 9.00. Waino got off to a slow start before really turning it on last season, but don't view this is evidence that such a scenario is going to play out again in 2010.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 10/28, 12:49 PM CT
MLB.com is reporting that Cardinals' hurler Adam Wainwright has been named the NL's most outstanding pitcher by the Major League Baseball Players Association. Wainwright was 19-8 with a 2.63 ERA this season.

Our View: Waino was selected by his peers as the top pitcher in the NL, and this award is usually a good indication of who will win the Cy Young. It's a three-horse race in the NL, and now Wainwright looks to have a leg up on Tim Lincecum and teammate Chris Carpenter.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 10/8, 8:37 PM CT
Adam Wainwright was absolutely dominant in game two of the NLDS on Thursday. The Cardinals' Cy Young candidate allowed just three hits in eight innings of one-run ball, but took a no-decision after the Cardinals allowed two runs in a ninth-inning meltdown. Los Angeles escaped with a 3-2 win, and heads into St. Louis with a 2-0 series lead.

Our View: Waino did everything he could for the Cardinals to tie the series at 1-1, but in the end, the Cards defense and bullpen let him down. It would be a shame for such a good pitcher to have his season end in such a fashion.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 10/2, 11:44 PM CT
Adam Wainwright gave up three earned runs on five hits over six innings in Friday's 12-6 loss to the Brewers at Busch Stadium. He had two walks and racked up eight strikeouts.

Our View: The Cardinals had a lead when Wainright exited, so he was dealt a no-decision rather than a loss. He was unable to claim his 20th win, and remains at 19-8.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 9/27, 12:05 AM CT
Adam Wainwright finally earned his league-leading 19th win of the season, and it coincided with the Cardinals first Central Division Championship since 2006. St. Louis clinched with a 6-3 win over the Rockies on Saturday.

Our View: Wainwright tossed eight dominant innings, allowing just two earned runs on ten hits and a walk, while fanning 11. He's now 19-8 on the season with a 2.58 ERA and is being considered the favorite for the NL Cy Young. Since July 1st he leads all pitchers in wins, ERA and innings pitched and is second in strikeouts.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 9/20, 11:32 PM CT
Adam Wainwright failed once again to pick up his 19th win on Sunday as the Cardinals fell to the Cubs by a score of 6-3. Wainwright went seven innings and allowed three runs on five hits while walking two and striking out 10.

Our View: Waino wasn't quite as dominating as usual tonight, but he surely didn't hurt himself in the Cy Young race with this outing. The 10 K's will help his cause, and he still has a couple more chances to get to 20 wins this season.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 9/15, 11:11 PM CT
Adam Wainwright was denied his major league leading 19th win on Tuesday night. He allowed just two runs on seven hits and a walk over seven innings, but the Cardinal offense went flat against Marlins lefty Sean West. Waino fanned eight, but was saddled with his eighth loss of the season after a 2-1 defeat.

Our View: Waino is now 18-8 with a 2.59 ERA and is still very much in the conversation for NL Cy Young, but it's going to be tough to wrestle it away from current favorite Tim Lincecum. 19 wins certainly would have helped.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 9/9, 3:48 PM CT
Adam Wainwright earned his Major League leading 18th win on Wednesday afternoon by pitching a gem against the Brewers.

Our View: Waino blanked the Crew for seven innings, allowing just five hits and a walk while striking out six. He has now won his last six decisions and Wednesday's outing lowered his ERA to 2.59, keeping him in the Cy Young conversation.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 9/4, 9:39 PM CT
Adam Wainwright may have picked up his 17th win on Friday, but his Cy Young chances took a big hit as he struggled through five innings against the Pirates. Wainwright allowed six runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out five in the Cardinals' 14-7 win.

Our View: Waino is the league's first 17-game winner, but he needed to be nearly perfect down the stretch to hold off Giants' ace Tim Lincecum and teammate Chris Carpenter for the award. On the bright side, the Cards showed that they can still win games when their pitchers don't have their best stuff, as the offense erupted for 14 runs.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 8/30, 6:42 PM CT
Adam Wainwright became the majors' first 16-game winner on Sunday when he shut down the Nationals for six innings. He scattered three hits and three walks, allowing just one run and struck out seven.

Our View: Wainwright's streak is an impressive one. He's strung together 26 straight starts of six or more innings and now has 13 straight outings where he allowed two earned runs or less. His 2.47 ERA is third best in the league.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 8/25, 9:53 PM CT
Adam Wainwright absolutely carved up the Astros on Tuesday as the Cardinals won the game 1-0. Wainwright went eight scoreless innings and allowed three hits while striking out five and not walking a batter.

Our View: This is starting to become a typical performance for Waino, and that speaks to how good he has been. He leads the NL with 15 wins, and his ERA is an outrageous 2.50. He continues to make his case for a Cy Young award every time out.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 8/20, 12:34 AM CT
Adam Wainwright was outstading again on Wednesday as the Cardinals defeated the Dodgers by a score of 3-2. Wainwright went seven innings and allowed two runs on four hits while walking one and striking out three.

Our View: Wainwright was pretty much untouchable until the seventh, when he allowed solo shots to Andre Ethier and Casey Blake. He has 14 wins this season, and his ERA is down to 2.61, making him a realistic Cy Young candidate.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 8/14, 10:44 PM CT
Adam Wainwright improved to a major league leading 14-7 on Friday night, tossing seven scoreless innings against the Padres, as the Cardinals won 9-2 at home. He also added his fifth career home run.

Our View: Wainwright probably doesn't have a chance to beat out Tim Lincecum for the National League Cy Young award this season, but should definitely be in the top two or three in the voting. The lanky righty is 14-7 with a 2.62 ERA and 149 strikeouts in 172 innings pitched. He is in the top five in the NL in every one of those categories.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 8/8, 11:09 PM CT
Adam Wainwright continued his dominance of National League hitters on Saturday. He allowed just one run on seven hits over 6.2 innings and did not walk a batter. He earned his league-leading 13th win and struck out six Pirates en route to a 5-3 Cardinal win.

Our View: Since July 1st Waino has been virtually untouchable. He is 5-2 with a 1.35 ERA over and hasn't allowed more than two runs in any game over that stretch. He has surprised a lot of people this season and is putting together a campaign that now make him a dark horse candidate for the Cy Young.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 8/2, 4:33 PM CT
Adam Wainwright has another stellar start on Sunday, but the Cardinal hurler took a tough luck loss. He allowed just two runs on eight hits over seven innings in a game mostly devoid of offense that the Astros won 2-0.

Our View: Wainwright struck out five and did not walk a batter. He fell to 12-7 on the season, but racked up his eighth consecutive quality start.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 7/28, 11:42 PM CT
Adam Wainwright outdueled Dodgers' ace Chad Billingsly on Tuesday as the Cardinals routed LA by a score of 10-0. Wainwright went eight scoreless innings and allowed eight hits while walking one and striking out five.

Our View: Waino is now 12-6 on the year, and he is turning into a dominant starter in this league. Fantasy owners should expect his hot play to continue all season, as the Cards look to be in for a tight race down the stretch.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 7/23, 10:53 PM CT
Adam Wainwright only issued one earned run on eight hits over six innings in Thursday's 4-1 win at Washington. He had one walk and racked up seven strikeouts. The game was called in the seventh inning due to rain.

Our View: It was another strong outing for Wainwright, and he collected his team-leading 11th win of the season. He has allowed two or less earned runs in each of his last six games, and has been a key reason why the Cardinals lead the NL Central standings.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 7/18, 10:19 PM CT
Adam Wainwright was solid in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Diamondbacks at Busch Stadium, as he only gave up two earned runs on five hits over seven innings. He issued three walks but fired eight strikeouts.

Our View: Wainwright pitched well, but had his two-game winning streak snapped due to a lack of scoring from his teammates. He continues to lead the Cardinals with 10 wins, a 3.01 ERA and 123 strikeouts, and should remain a rock-solid fantasy hurler.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 7/13, 9:13 AM CT
Adam Wainwright is the major league leader in innings pitched at the All-Star break.

Our View: His 130.1 edge Dan Haren and Kevin Millwood by a third of an inning. After struggling for consistency early in the season, Wainwright has failed to go at least seven innings just twice in his past 12 starts. He is 7-4 in that stretch, which also included back-to-back starts in which he threw over 120 pitches. He looks set for a monster second half.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 7/12, 10:05 PM CT
Adam Wainwright broke off his third consecutive dominant start in the second half of Sunday's day-night doubleheader at Wrigley Field. The dazzling young starter allowed just two runs on seven hits and three walks over eight innings. He struck out five Cubs and won his tenth game of the season.

Our View: Waino is now 10-5 with a 3.04 ERA. Any All Star snub conversation has to include the Cardinals' Opening Day starter. He has now allowed just three runs over his last 25.1 innings (three starts) and is 2-0 over that stretch.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 7/7, 10:05 PM CT
Adam Wainwright was dominant for the second straight start on Tuesday, striking out nine in 8.1 innings as the Cardinals blanked the Brewers 5-0.

Our View: After struggling for consistency early in 2009, Wainwright has gone at least seven innings in five of his last six starts, and is near the top of the NL leaderboard in wins. He is also slowly creeping up the NL leaderboard in strikeouts.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 7/1, 10:17 PM CT
Adam Wainwright had one of the best starts of his career on Wednesday, pitching nine innings, striking out 12 and allowing just one run, but still didn't get the win as the Cardinals needed extra innings to beat the Giants 2-1.

Our View: It was Wainwirght's first complete game of the season. Through 114 innings, the tall righty is 8-5 with a 3.32 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 2009, and an upper tier fantasy starter.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 6/26, 11:35 PM CT
Adam Wainwright allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits over seven innings in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Twins at Busch Stadium. He had four walks and five strikeouts.

Our View: It was not a bad outing other than the four free passes, and Wainwright takes a loss due to poor run support from his teammates. He has eight wins this season, with a 3.51 ERA.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 6/21, 4:26 PM CT
Adam Wainwright gave up five earned runs on eight hits over six innings in Sunday's 12-5 win at Kansas City. He had no walks and racked up eight strikeouts.

Our View: Wainwright gave up five runs, but his teammates provided enough offensive support for him to claim his team-leading eighth win of the season. He has won in three straight starts.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 6/16, 10:10 PM CT
Adam Wainwright pitched effectively in the Cardinals 11-2 victory over the Tigers on Tuesday night, going seven innings and allowing only one earned run while striking out five.

Our View: Wainwright has been somewhat inconsistent in 2009, while still maintaining a low ERA. He is not yet an elite fantasy option, but definitely a solid one who should be owned in every format.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 6/10, 9:18 PM CT
Adam Wainwright allowed 11 hits and three walks, but limited the damage to just four runs in Wednesday's 13-4 win over the Marlins.

Our View: Wainwright has allowed 21 hits in his last two road starts. He has gotten the decision in each of his last six starts and is an even 3-3 in that stretch. He has not pitched as well as expected this season, but he is still better than most.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 6/5, 10:59 PM CT
Adam Wainwright allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits over six innings in Friday's 11-4 loss to the Rockies at Busch Stadium. He issued three walks and racked up eight strikeouts.

Our View: Wainwright falls to 5-4 for the season. He has lost in each of his last two starts, and is 2-3 at home.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 5/31, 9:47 PM CT
Adam Wainwright fell to 5-3 on Sunday, giving up four runs off 10 hits and two walks with three strikeouts in seven innings against the Giants.

Our View: No need to worry about Wainwright. He didn't have his best stuff but remains a fine starter who's made it at least six innings in nine-straight starts.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 5/26, 10:55 PM CT
Adam Wainwright was brilliant once again on Tuesday. He allowed just one run on five hits and two walks over seven innings and struck out nine in the Cardinals 8-1 win over the Brewers. He improved to 5-2 on the year.

Our View: Wainwright has now allowed just three runs in his last 23.2 innings and has seen his ERA drop from 4.35 to 3.18 over that span. Since figuring out the mechanical flaw in his delivery he's been one of the best pitchers in baseball.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 5/21, 10:55 PM CT
Adam Wainwright was masterful on Thursday as he held the Cubs to just one run on five hits and a walk over 8.2 innings. He fanned seven, earned his fourth win of the season and gave the Cards a three-game sweep of the rival Cubs with a 3-1 win.

Our View: Since discovering and rectifying a mechanical flaw in his delivery, Wainwright has been brilliant. He's allowed just two runs over his last 16.2 innings and has struck out 14 against just three walks. He is one of the better pitchers in the NL when he's on, and it appears that he finally is. Fell free to start him every five days and reap the rewards.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 5/16, 3:02 PM CT
Adam Wainwright made one bad pitch on Saturday and it cost him and the Cardinals the game. He allowed a solo home run to Corey Hart that stood up to be the difference in a 1-0 Brewers' win. Wainwright tossed eight innings allowing just the one run on two hits and two walks and struck out seven, but fell to 3-2 on the season.

Our View: This was great, but unfortunate start for Waino. He dominated a loaded Milwaukee lineup and it looks like the mechanical flaw he found in his delivery has been remedied. Look for Wainwright to be dominant once again from here on out.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 5/12, 9:06 AM CT
Adam Wainwright told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Monday that he has detected a flaw in his mechanics that has caused him to lose command and expend much more energy than usual. He indicated that the issue has to do with his arm slot being more vertical than previous years.

Our View: Waino hasn't been bad this season, but he hasn't looked like the pitcher Cardinal fans and fantasy owners have come to know. Now we know why. If he has figured out a flaw, expect pitching coach Dave Duncan to get it fixed before his next start.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 5/5, 11:14 PM CT
Adam Wainwright was delivered his first loss of the season, courtesy of a merciless Phillies' lineup. He allowed seven runs, including two homers, on nine hits and two walks over six innings as the Cardinals fell 10-7 to the Phillies.

Our View: Waino had been very good this season up until Tuesday's start. The only part of his game he had struggled with in his first five starts was allowing too many free passes. Well, he remedied that on Tuesday with just two walks, but was shelled in the process. His ERA jumped from 2.76 to a now bloated 4.08.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 4/29, 9:35 PM CT
Adam Wainwright improved to 3-0 with a 5-3 win over the Braves on Wednesday. He allowed seven hits, five walks, and two earned runs while striking out only two.

Our View: It certainly wasn't a pretty win, but he got the W. His WHIP is up to 1.57, but he has managed to keep his ERA at just 2.76. His biggest concern is that he has walked 18 batters in 29.1 innings. Expect his control to come around and his numbers should be even stronger when it does.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 4/24, 10:10 PM CT
Adam Wainwright didn't get the win on Friday, but he pitched well enough to. He allowed just one earned run on seven hits and one walk over seven innings and struck out six in the Cardinals' 4-3 win over the Cubs.

Our View: Waino remains 2-0 on the season, but this was by far his most positive outing. The one walk stands out in particular. He had uncharacteristically struggled with his control in his previous three starts, but looked dominant tonight. He's also striking out about a batter per inning, well above his usual total.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 4/16, 7:19 PM CT
Adam Wainwright improved to 2-0 on Thursday, giving up four runs off six hits and four walks while striking out six against the Cubs.

Our View: Wainwright has struggled with his control thus far, having issued 12 walks in his first three starts, though he's still been mostly effective and has posted 17 strikeouts in 16.1 innings. He'll have to lead St. Louis' rotation with Chris Carpenter on the DL and remains a must-start fantasy pitcher at this point.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 4/11, 6:45 PM CT
Adam Wainwright got the win in the Cardinals' 11-2 blowout of the Astros on Saturday. He scattered four hits and three walks over five innings and did not allow a run. He struck out four and is now 1-0 on the season.

Our View: Fantasy owners will be happy with the win and the four Ks, but this marks the second straight time this season Wainwright has failed to finish six innings. He has been working his way out of jams, but is allowing far to many runners to reach base. In just 10.1 innings he has surrendered eight hits and eight walks.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 4/6, 6:56 PM CT
Adam Wainwright went 5.1 innings in Monday's 6-4 loss to the Pirates. He gave up four hits and five walks, while striking out seven hitters and allowing two earned runs.

Our View: Wainwright needed 94 pitches to get 16 outs against the Pirates. The walks are a concern, but he has traditionally exhibited very good control. He should be fine going forward, and we expect this to be one of his shorter outings of the season.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 3/31, 4:53 PM CT
Adam Wainwright got his second win of the spring on Tuesday as he scattered seven hits over five innings. He allowed two earned runs and struck out four.

Our View: Waino has had a pretty good spring, but it still hasn't been Adam Wainwright caliber. He will be the Cards Opening Day starter and is blossoming into one of the most effective young pitchers in the game. Look for him to step up his game considerably one the season kicks off. He is a quality option as a fantasy starter.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 3/26, 3:05 PM CT
Cardinals hurler Adam Wainwright got 16 outs (5.1 innings) against the Mets, and eight were via the strikeout, as he also allowed two runs on five hits and four walks. St. Louis ultimately fell, 9-5.

Our View: A mixed day for Wainwright, as the strikeouts are excellent, but nine base runners in 5.1 innings are too many. The four walks were one more than he had all spring up to this point.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 3/20, 5:18 PM CT
Adam Wainwright pitched a solid five innings on Friday against Philadelphia, allowing two runs on eight hits. He was touched up once on a Ryan Howard solo homer in the second.

Our View: Wainwright looked sharp in one of his longest spring outings to date. Though he has struggled a bit during exhibition play, he has not shown ill effects of the finger ligament injury that sidelined him for much of 2008.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 3/14, 3:02 PM CT
Adam Wainwright allowed one earned run on six hits over five innings in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Braves in the Grapefruit League, with no walks and four strikeouts.

Our View: He gave up six hits, but did not allow a walk and his four strikeouts were also favorable. This was a good outing overall, which he needed since he was 0-2 in his previous two starts.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 3/8, 4:54 PM CT
Adam Wainwright struggled against the Marlins Sunday, allowing three runs on four hits in two and two-thirds innings. He is now 0-2 this spring.

Our View: Today's struggles aside, Wainwright will enter this season as St. Louis' ace and should be a top pick among NL starters in all fantasy leagues.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 3/2, 5:13 PM CT
Cardinal hurler Adam Wainwright stumbled in an exhibition match against the Rays on Monday. He allowed five hits, three runs (two earned) and a walk in only two innings.

Our View: Wainwright should be fine. He seems fully recovered from last year's middle finger woes and is most likely experimenting with his pitches early on. Barring a surprise return to Cy Young form by Chris Carpenter, Wainwright is still the Cardinals' ace.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 10/3, 3:13 PM CT
The St. Louis Cardinals have signed pitching coach Dave Duncan to a one-year deal with an option for another season, according to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: If Duncan isn't the best pitching coach in the game, you'll have to convince us who is. Who else could turn Kent Bottenfield into a 18-win pitcher? Or turn Jeff Weaver into a dominant postseason pitcher?
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 9/24, 10:13 PM CT
Adam Wainwright will finish the year 11-3 after Wednesday night's victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was a shaky outing for Wainwright who lasted six innings, walked five and gave up seven hits.

Our View: Wainwright missed two-plus months of the season, otherwise he would have been one of the best fantasy pitchers going. He finishes the year with a 3.20 ERA and has certified his reputation as the Cardinals' ace.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 9/13, 10:28 PM CT
Adam Wainwright was rocked for six earned runs on nine hits over four innings of work in Saturday's 7-6 loss to the Pirates, with two walks and three strikeouts. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.

Our View: Wainwright was dealt a no decision, and his ERA jumps from 2.85 to 3.20. He is 4-0 over his last six starts, and has allowed two or less runs in each game over the span. He has only taken three losses over 18 starts, and should bounce back fine in his next outing.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 9/7, 4:03 PM CT
Adam Wainwright had a great outing against the Marlins, throwing eight innings and allowing just one run on six hits while striking out six in the Cardinals 3-1 win.

Our View: Since coming back from the DL, Wainwright is 3-0 with a 1.43 ERA in four starts. His fantasy stock for 2009 goes up with each outing.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 9/4, 7:48 AM CT
The St. Louis Cardinals may push pitcher Adam Wainwright's next start back a day so he can pitch the first game in a series with the Chicago Cubs, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: This move would allow the Cardinals to use their two best pitchers, Wainwright and Lohse, in the Cubs series. Though they are realistically out of the division race, it wouldn't hurt having their ace go up against the Cubs powerful lineup.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 9/3, 12:00 AM CT
Adam Wainwright was excellent for the Cardinals in their 8-2 win over the Diamondbacks, going 5.1 innings and giving up just one run on three hits while striking out seven.

Our View: Another solid outing by Wainwright, whose ERA dropped to 2.97 on the year. Had he been healthy all season, he could have posted some great numbers. Fantasy owners will just have to wait until next year for that.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 8/27, 11:28 PM CT
Adam Wainwright allowed three runs, two earned, and threw 89 pitches in his second start coming off the 15-day disabled list from a finger injury that sidelined him for two months.

Our View: Wainwright looks to have regained his early season form. He is once again a must start in all fantasy leagues.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 8/27, 1:15 PM CT
Tonight will be Adam Wainwright's second start since coming off the DL with a sprained middle finger. In his first start Wainwright went six innings, struck out four, gave up one run and got the win against the Braves. If the Cardinals want to stay in the chase for the NL Wild Card they need Wainwright in top form.

Our View: Wainwright is a must start in every fantasy league. He has gone at least five innings in every start this season and has lowered his ERA th 3.04.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 8/22, 10:51 PM CT
Adam Wainwright came off the DL and proceeded to go six innings, surrendering just one run to the Braves while striking out four. He also contributed at the plate by going 3-for-5 in the Cardinals 18-3 demolition of the Braves.

Our View: It is safe to assume that Wainwright will stay in the rotation. He looked very sharp, and one of his four strikeouts was a called third strike to Chipper Jones. Feel safe leaving him in your fantasy rotation.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 8/20, 6:07 PM CT
Adam Wainwright will be activated from the DL and start on Friday against the Braves, according to the FSN Midwest telecast. Manager Tony La Russa said that this doesn't necessarily mean Wainwright will be coming back permanently as a starter and that they will continue to evaluate their options.

Our View: Joel Pineiro will be used in relief if need be. Whether or not Wainwright stays in the rotation or Pineiro stays in relief could depend on Chris Carpenter's status.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 8/19, 8:35 PM CT
Adam Wainwright is ready to face big league hitters, though whether he will come back as a reliever or as a starter is not yet resolved, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Wainwright said he would prefer to make his return as a starter, but will embrace whatever role the Cardinals decide he should take. There has been talk that Wainwright's role for the stretch run is tied to the status of right-hander Chris Carpenter -- out with a shoulder strain -- who came through a toss session in good shape on Tuesday. But manager Tony La Russa made the point that the Carpenter-Wainwright scenario isn't necessarily a package deal. Because of a schedule that includes two off-days this week and two more next week, the Cardinals have some flexibility in how they assemble their rotation for the near future. Wainwright just hopes to know soon which way the Cardinals want to go with him.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 8/19, 7:54 AM CT
Adam Wainwright's role with the team will be in part determined by how Chris Carpenter fares in his throwing today, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. If Carpenter feels good, Wainwright will probably come back as a reliever, otherwise he could resume his role as a starter.

Our View: The problem for fantasy owners is if Wainwright does return as a reliever, it won't necessarily be as a closer. Rookie Chris Perez has been strong in that role, so Wainwright could come back in long relief, which diminishes his value.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 8/17, 7:49 AM CT
Adam Wainwright said he is ready for whatever role the Cardinals have planned for him as he felt good after his rehab outing with Double-A Springfield Saturday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He has been rehabbing a severely sprained right middle finger and said, "I feel like I'm ready, for sure. Eighty pitches would be no problem. Eighty-five would be no problem. I'm ready for that. I just have to wait and see what role I'm in." He hurled 4.2 scoreless innings Saturday, and threw 64 pitches with seven strikeouts. The hitches in his delivery from his previous outing were also corrected.

Our View: Saturday's outing could be his last before returning to the Cardinals. The team is yet to indicate what role he will hold. He was being prepped to work out of the pen as a reliever, but that was before they lost Chris Carpenter.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 8/13, 7:52 AM CT
Adam Wainwright will start Saturday for Double-A Springfield, and his pitch count will increase to 65 or 70 pitches, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The Cardinals pushed his start back one day and raised his pitch count to get him ready in case he's needed as a starting pitcher. Facing uncertainty with the ailing Chris Carpenter, the Cardinals want Wainwright to be available for either role, starter or, potentially closer. GM John Mozeliak said, "We want to keep everything on the table as an option. We decided we didn't want to get Wainwright in a position where he's throwing 25 pitches, 25 pitches and then, oh wait, we need him as a starter."

Our View: Either way, Wainwright is worth holding onto in larger mixed leagues and NL-only leagues.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 8/12, 9:42 AM CT
Adam Wainwright allowed two runs over three innings in his minor league rehab appearance Monday for Triple-A Memphis.

Our View: Due to all sorts of bullpen issues for the Cardinals, Wainwright is likely to be the closer when he returns to action.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 8/9, 7:31 AM CT
Adam Wainwright struggled in his first rehab outing for Triple-A Memphis, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Being groomed as a reliever, Wainwright was on a 25 pitch limit, and he used them to get just two outs, allowing three runs on four hits while walking one and striking one batter out.

Our View: Wainwright is likely to be the Cardinals closer when he returns to action. He has not pitched in two months, so some rust was to be expected.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 8/6, 9:28 PM CT
The Cardinals have perhaps tipped their hand as to their future plans for Adam Wainwright, who is coming back from a sprained right middle finger. The righty will go on a rehab assignment Friday and will pitch every two or three days, an indication that he'll be used in relief when he returns to active duty, according to MLB.com. "We're going to limit his pitch count and then have him go more on an every-couple-of-days schedule from there," GM John Mozeliak said. "Not drawing any conclusions, but [using Wainwright in relief] is still on the table. Clearly, we think getting him back in the bullpen sooner, rather than later as a starter, could address some immediate needs."

Our View: The Cardinals aren't saying for sure that they're planning on using Wainwright as a reliever down the stretch, but the writing appears to be on the wall. He would probably work in the middle innings initially but would almost surely go back to the closer role that he held in the 2006 playoffs.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 8/5, 6:39 PM CT
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright threw 35 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday and will begin what he hopes is a short rehab stint later this week, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Wainwright, the Opening Day starter, has been out nearly two months with a tendon injury in his right middle finger. He'll pitch again Saturday for a minor league affiliate and could rejoin the rotation next week, although he conceded he was a bit rusty and his delivery was out of sync.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 8/2, 7:33 PM CT
Adam Wainwright threw a bullpen session on Saturday, and the AP reports he is close to returning from a sprained middle finger that has kept him on the DL for nearly two months. He said, "I’m very shocked right now. I can’t believe how good I threw. I told the training staff before I threw today, I said the last two days I’ve felt a 200 percent difference in my hand, just holding stuff, grabbing things, even grabbing a remote or something. It just felt good all of a sudden. Today I went at it 100 percent and tested it completely."

Our View: The next step for Wainwright is a simulated game on Tuesday. If all goes favorably without a setback, Wainwright will likely make one or two rehab starts before rejoining the team.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 7/31, 6:27 PM CT
Cardinals hurler Adam Wainwright had a bullpen session in which he threw 25 breaking balls and felt good, according to StLCardinals.com. "I'm getting close, man. I'm a few steps away. I'm not far at all," he said.

Our View: Wainwright will throw a few more bullpen sessions and then the Cardinals will decide what to do with him. He was having a very good season before his injury, and hopefully fantasy owners who were patient with him will be rewarded soon.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 7/30, 8:21 PM CT
Adam Wainwright will throw at least two more bullpen sessions in his attempt to come back from an injured finger after suffering a setback on Tuesday, according to MLB.com. Wainwright will throw breaking balls on Thursday and then a normal bullpen on Saturday before being allowed to face hitters.

Our View: With continued issues with his finger, there is a growing possibility that Wainwright might return in the bullpen and not in the starting rotation.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 7/30, 10:10 AM CT
Adam Wainwright, who is trying to bounce back from a sprained right middle finger, is no longer scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday after struggling during a pen session Tuesday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: GM John Mozeliak indicated that he may not begin a rehab assignment until August 5 as well. The team will take each bullpen as it comes.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 7/29, 10:59 AM CT
Adam Wainwright, recovering from a sprained right middle finger, will begin a rehab assignment Friday with an abbreviated start, probably with Double-A Springfield, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Pitching coach Dave Duncan did not project Wainwright's role upon returning, but the team has discussed using the righty in the closer role.

Our View: Obviously if Wainwright comes back as a reliever he should return sooner. The team hopes to have him back before their August 8-10 series against the Cubs.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 7/27, 7:29 AM CT
Adam Wainwright, who is recovering from a sprained right middle finger, threw 55 pitches in a bullpen session at Shea Stadium on Saturday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He worked in the first six or seven breaking balls he has thrown in seven weeks. He stated that he wasn't pleased with his control but it was the first time that he "really juiced it." He was instructed not to throw any curveballs.

Our View: Wainwright will take two days off, increase intensity in a bullpen session Tuesday and then the Cardinals will take a look at targeting his return, and what role he will have with the club. If he doesn't start, he will be considered to close.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 7/25, 7:13 AM CT
Adam Wainwright threw in a pen session Thursday as he continues to recover from his sprained right middle finger, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: The team is yet to set a concrete timetable for his return, but he expects to return to the Cardinals' rotation within three weeks.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 7/23, 7:13 AM CT
Adam Wainwright has been cleared to throw off a mound and had a 40-pitch workout in the Cardinals' bullpen Tuesday as he recovers from a sprained right middle finger, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He threw fastballs and changeups during the session, and will move up to his curveball next. "It felt like I wanted to feel, it felt natural," Wainwright said. "I've got some joint stiffness that has to break down, but otherwise it's about building my pitch count up... "Best case?" he said earlier. "Two and a half weeks, maybe."

Our View: Wainwright is still dealing with some stiffness but noted that his throws felt natural during the session. He expects to return to the Cardinals' rotation within three weeks.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 7/20, 7:42 AM CT
Adam Wainwright, who is recovering from a sprained right middle finger, is scheduled to meet with team doctors Monday to get clearance to throw off a mound early next week, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Barring a setback, he could be back in the Cardinals' rotation in early August. He should make a few rehab starts in the minors prior to his return.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 7/16, 5:51 PM CT
Adam Wainwright continues to progress well in his comeback from and injured middle finger and hopes to return to the hill for the Cardinals the first week of August, according to MLB.com. "I think it's healed exactly like it's supposed to," Wainwright said. "...I have every confidence that as soon as I get into my brain that my finger is healthy, I'll be fine."

Our View: Wainwright will throw long toss every other day the rest of this week in hopes of being to cleared to throw off the mound next week. If all goes well he will make a couple of appearances in the minors before returning to a rotation that desperately needs him.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 7/10, 1:21 PM CT
Adam Wainwright has made good progress with his right middle finger injury and is continuing a throwing program that will see him re-evaluated after the All-Star break, according to StLCardinals.com.

Our View: Wainwright was having a very solid year until he suffered the injury, so this is good news. Fantasy owners should expect to get him back sometime in early August.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 7/8, 8:50 AM CT
Adam Wainwright's ruptured ligament in his right middle finger has healed well enough to begin a throwing program this week, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Wainwright will start a light throwing program on Wednesday and could move on to more aggressive workouts when the team returns from the All-Star break.

Our View: When the team returns from the All-Star break for a workout a week from Wednesday, Wainwright hopes to begin long-tossing. This is an injury he could come back from, but still feel for up to a year.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 7/1, 10:24 AM CT
Adam Wainwright hopes to receive good news from doctors in regards to the ruptured "pulley" in his finger so that he can resume throwing with a target date of returning to action right after the All-Star break, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Wainwright had the splint removed from the finger last Friday and he has begun strengthening exercises waiting for the approval of doctors to return to the mound.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 6/11, 10:22 AM CT
Adam Wainwright will not need surgery to fix his sprained right middle finger, but GM John Mozeliak expects Wainwright to miss at least three weeks, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He has a tear of a "pulley" that connects to the finger's flexor tendon. The injury is less severe than a tear of the flexor tendon itself, but it is not considered minor. "I would call it significant," Mozeliak said. "I don't think he'll be back before three weeks. But it's really difficult to put a timetable on it right now."

Our View: Wainwright is wearing a splint on the finger but removes the splint every hour to manipulate the finger. He said he'll use the down time to strengthen his shoulder so "when it's ready to go I'll be ready to rock 'n' roll." Joel Pineiro is starting in Wainwright's place on Thursday.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 6/10, 4:35 PM CT
Adam Wainwright has officially been placed on the DL, according to MLB.com. He has a sprained right middle finger. The move is retroactive to June 8.

Our View: We're waiting for an update on his status and a corresponding move. Jamie Garcia is expected to take Wainwright's spot in the rotation Thursday.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 6/9, 7:39 PM CT
The Cardinals will place Adam Wainwright on the DL Tuesday with a sprained right middle finger, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Wainwright on Monday met with team doctors, who prescribed rest for the injury. The righty will be re-evaluated later this week to see if rest and ongoing treatment will permit him to begin throwing again.

Our View: Joel Pineiro will be activated from the DL and will presumably make Wainwright's start on Thursday.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 6/8, 7:42 AM CT
Adam Wainwright will fly to St. Louis Sunday and meet with team doctors Monday to determine the severity of the sprained finger injury that forced him from Saturday's start, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The righty felt some soreness and loss of feeling in his right middle finger during his warm-up, and he felt a pop in the finger when he tried to throw a curveball to the second batter of the sixth inning. He couldn't get any pressure on his next pitch and motioned for team trainer Barry Weinberg. "At that point, I realized I had no more business being in the game because I couldn't grip the ball," Wainwright said. "The feeling is exactly like a jammed finger. It's not swollen like it's jammed, but I can't bend it like it's jammed and I can't put any pressure on it."

Our View: The Cardinals rotation has been hit hard by injuries lately, so hopefully for theirs and Wainwright's owners' sake this injury is a minor one.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 6/7, 8:35 PM CT
Adam Wainwright was forced to leave his start on Saturday with a sprained right finger, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: The Cardinals pitching staff is being decimated by injuries, so hopefully this isn't a situation that leads to any DL time for Wainwright.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 6/2, 10:18 PM CT
It took seven innings, but the Pirates finally got to Adam Wainwright on Monday night. Wainwright tossed six scoreless before serving up four runs (a grand slam) in the seventh frame and another run in the eighth. He took the loss and slipped to 5-3.

Our View: Wainwright was cruising for a while, but it obviously unraveled on him. He remains a very solid fantasy pitcher despite this glitch.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 5/28, 10:15 PM CT
St.Louis RHP Adam Wainwright was on his game this evening as his Cardinals posted the 6-1 victory over Houston. Wainwright pitched eight innings, allowing just one run on three hits with just one walk and eight strikeouts.

Our View: This gives Wainwright consecutive wins in what has been a disappointing May, going 2-1 with three no decisions after going 3-1 through March and April.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 5/17, 4:45 PM CT
Adam Wainwright struggled for the second straight start against Tampa Bay on Saturday. The right hander allowed four runs on 12 hits in 5.2 innings. It would have been worst but the Rays continued to run themselves out of innings.

Our View: The Cardinals' opening-day starter gave up six earned runs in six innings in his previous outing at Milwaukee.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 5/12, 10:18 PM CT
Adam Wainwright didn't have his typical "stuff" on Monday night and suffered his worst outing of the year. The right-hander allowed eight runs (six earned) on eight hits, walked one and struck out three in the loss to the Brewers.

Our View: It was a struggle from the first inning for Wainwright when he offered up a flat fastball to Ryan Braun for a home run.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 5/7, 10:55 PM CT
St. Louis RHP Adam Wainwright failed to earn the victory (leaving with no decision), but the starter put his best on the mound to help the Cardinals fight in a 4-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies. Wainwright pitched seven full innings, holding the Rockies without a single run on just four hits, walking two and striking out three.

Our View: That brings Wainwright to a lowly 2.25 ERA with a strong BB/K ratio.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 4/21, 10:13 PM CT
Adam Wainwright continued his impressive start to the season by holding the Brewers to two runs in seven innings on Monday night. Wainright allowed four hits, four walks and struck out six Brewers.

Our View: Wainwright struggled with his control a bit on the night, but like the burgeoning ace that is, he was able to keep the damage to a minimum even if he didn't pick up the victory after Ryan Franklin blew the save.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 4/16, 10:20 PM CT
Adam Wainwright twirled a five hitter for 7.2 innings to pick up his second victory of the season against the Brewers. Wainwright allowed just one earned run and five hits on the night as he struck out six.

Our View: Wainwright has some issues considering the massive increase he had last year in IP, but there is no concern about his ability as he continues to show why he is the team's new ace.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 4/11, 7:38 AM CT
Following a strong first start, Adam Wainwright was dealt his first loss of the season against San Francisco on Thursday as he allowed four runs on eight hits over seven innings, with no walks and six strikeouts. The Cardinals' acting ace should bounce back fine, and his fantasy stock remains steady.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 4/5, 4:48 PM CT
Adam Wainwright needed 107 pitches to hold the Nationals to just two runs over eight innings for the Cardinals to pick up his first win of the season. Wainwright allowed eight hits and one walk while striking out four. Wainwright will look to at least duplicated his production of last season (14 wins and 3.70 ERA), though a better goal might be for him to try and limit baserunners as last years 1.40 WHIP is far too high for a top flight starter.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 4/1, 8:30 PM CT
The Cardinals will not move Adam Wainwright up to pitch on short rest, despite the fact that he threw just three innings Monday before the game was rained out. He'll make his second start on Saturday against the Nationals, as planned. "We've got the other guys ready to go," said manager Tony La Russa on MLB.com. "It would disrupt everybody." Wainwright owners got cheated out of a start this week. Mother nature can be cruel sometimes.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 3/26, 4:10 PM CT
Adam Wainwright enjoyed another solid outing against Baltimore on Wednesday as he only allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits over six innings of work, with two walks and four strikeouts. The Cardinals' current ace holds a solid 3.38 ERA this spring.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 3/21, 6:45 PM CT
Adam Wainwright, a day after signing a big contract, allowed nine hits and four runs in 4.2 innings, this according to the AP. “It was just a weird day. I knew I could get outs on some off-speed stuff, but I wanted to use my fastball and didn’t do a good job of locating it,” he said. Wainwright should be fine, and if he isn't the Cards may not win 50 games this season. The team needs at least another 14 wins from their ace this season, but there are some who are concerned about the workload the youngster handled last season (202 IP).
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 3/20, 11:32 AM CT
As anticipated, Adam Wainwright signed a new deal with the Cardinals on Wednesday, according to MLB.com. It is a four-year deal with club options for 2012 and 2013. Financial terms were not revealed.

Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 3/15, 5:30 PM CT
Adam Wainwright looked like an "ace" for the Cardinals on Saturday as he only allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits over five innings against the Mets. He had two strikeouts and only one walk and remains the Cardinals number one starter.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 3/5, 10:08 PM CT
Adam Wainwright really struggled on Wednesday, a day after he agreed to terms with the Cardinals. Wainwright allowed five hits, three walks and three runs against the Marlins. “It’s one thing to go out there and do well every time out, but it’s another to go out and struggle and learn from it," Wainwright said to the AP. Wainwright will be fine, or at least he better be as the Cardinals are counting on him to be their number one hurler this season.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 3/4, 3:38 PM CT
Adam Wainwright agreed to terms on a one-year contract Tuesday, according to the AP. The tall right-hander will make $438,000 if he makes the team and $246,000 if he’s in the minors. Since Wainwright is expected to be the Cardinals opening day starter, you can count on him making $438K.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 2/25, 9:52 AM CT
Adam Wainwright is set to be the club’s opening day starter, according to the St Louis Post Dispatch. While the report notes that nothing has been made official by skipper Tony La Russa, the right-hander, and No. 1 of the staff by default, will make his spring debut Friday against the New York Mets. Wainwright led the team in wins (14), innings pitched (202), strikeouts (136) and had the third best ERA in the NL after the break last summer.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 6/23, 7:42 PM CT

Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 5/17, 10:20 AM CT
Adam Wainwright admitted on Wednesday night that he's been dealing with tendonitis in his right elbow and other parts of his arm. His start on Tuesday night marked the first time he has worked without discomfort, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "It's the first start since the very first start that I haven't gone on the mound thinking about something ailing me," Wainwright explains. "I don't know if that was the cause of some of my delivery problems. I don't know."
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 3/15, 5:55 PM CT

Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 3/5, 4:02 PM CT
Adam Wainwright was brilliant in his second spring outing on Monday against Houston, throwing four hitless innings, allowing two walks and striking out one. Wainwright, who is converting from a reliever to a starter, has yet to allow a single hit over seven innings this spring.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 12/4, 10:43 AM CT
If Jason Isringhausen's recovery from hip surgery continues at its current pace, GM Walt Jocketty said the Cardinals could move Adam Wainwright to the rotation, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Wainwright closed for the team while Izzy was injured last year.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 11/26, 1:39 PM CT
In an interview with Baseball America, Cardinals GM Walt Jocketty said that the Cardinals will keep Adam Wainwright in the bullpen if they are able to sign three starting pitchers to go with Chris Carpenter and Anthony Reyes. If that doesn't happen, Wainwright might go into the rotation.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 11/14, 11:39 AM CT
It looks like the Cardinals will keep Adam Wainwright in the closer role next year, assuming that the team is able to fill its holes in the starting rotation, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. After taking over as closer late in September, Wainwright threw 11 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out 18 in the regular season and playoffs. "I think it's a real plus for us to have out there," pitching coach Dave Duncan said. "I hope our pitching staff is strong enough that Wainwright can be our closer. If that's the case we'll have a pretty good pitching staff."
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 10/3, 9:25 AM CT
It appears that Adam Wainwright will be the closer for the Cardinals in the playoffs, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Wainwright was 2-for-2 in save opportunities while filling in for the injured Jason Isringhausen. The other candidate, Braden Looper, blew his lone save opportunity after Izzy went down.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 9/8, 1:13 PM CT
Adam Wainwright might see some save chances while Jason Isringhausen is sidelined, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Wainright has arguably been the best St. Louis reliever this season, with a 3.03 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 68.1 IP. Braden Looper is another fill-in possibility for the Cardinals, and Tomy LaRussa also could play matchups and use a committee to close. Isringhausen is expected to miss at least a week.
Adam Wainwright, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 8/4, 9:47 AM CT
Although the Cardinals have had internal discussions about moving Adam Wainwright into the rotation, it appears that he will remain in the bullpen for now, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "It's a legitimate question," pitching coach Dave Duncan said. "Let's put it this way, I hate to discuss it too much because it puts the flicker in his mind that it's possible. It has not been discussed to that point. We've talked about it. It wouldn't be right to say we haven't. I don't think it's been discussed to the point that it's going to happen." Wainwright, a starter all throughout his minor league career, has been great out of the bullpen this season, posting a 2.62 ERA and 1.07 WHIP while striking out 50 in 55 innings.
