Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesMonday 1/4, 6:50 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Miguel Olivo's one-year deal with the Rockies is worth $2.5MM, according to the Associated Press. It includes an option for 2011.

Our View: Olivo is expected to share starts with Chris Iannetta. The 31-year-old vet will provide experience and leadership at catcher, and launched a career-high 23 homers with the Royals in 2009.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesMonday 1/4, 5:02 PM CT
Miguel Olivo has agreed to a one-year deal with the Rockies, according to team writer Thomas Harding's twitter page. The deal includes an option for 2011.

Our View: The team moved away from negotiations with Yorvit Torrealba. Olivo will compete with Chris Iannetta for the starting gig at catcher, and could benefit from playing at launching pad Coors Field. He crushed 23 homers with Kansas City in 2009.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesWednesday 12/30, 4:39 PM CT
The Rockies are reportedly trying to work out a deal with catcher Miguel Olivo, according to FOX Sports.

Our View: Olivo was on Colorado's radar since the club had trouble negotiating with Yorvit Torrealba. Chris Iannetta would likely be their No. 1 catcher, but Olivo could generate power as a backup while playing his home games at Coors Field.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesTuesday 12/1, 11:03 PM CT
The Royals declined to offer Miguel Olivo salary arbitration, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View: This was to be expected, as Kansas City paid a $100,000 buyout in November to void a $3.3MM option on the veteran catcher for next season. Offering Olivo arbitration would have pushed his 2010 salary even higher. He wants a multi-year deal, so he likely played his last game with the Royals.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesFriday 9/18, 11:29 PM CT
Miguel Olivo led the Royals offensively in tonight's 11-0 win at Chicago, as he went 2-for-3 with six RBI. He hit two homers, one off Mark Buehrle and the other Jhonny Nunez.

Our View: Olivo continues to generate solid power, as he hit six homers over 10 games this month. He collected 23 homers for 2009, and needs four more to reach 100 for his career.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesThursday 9/17, 3:22 PM CT
Miguel Olivo had just one hit in the Royals 9-2 win over the Tigers on Thurdsay, but it was a big one. His three-run homer off of Edwin Jackson put the Royals up by five and they never looked back.

Our View: Olivo now has 21 bombs on the season, five more than his previous career high. He's a nice power option at catcher, especially in AL-only leagues, but his .248 average leaves a little something to be desired.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesFriday 9/11, 10:37 PM CT
Miguel Olivo went 2-for-4 with two RBI in tonight's 2-1 win at Cleveland. He hit a single a solo homer off Jose Veras.

Our View: Olivo crushed his homer in the top of the 12th inning, which proved to lead the Royals to a win. Olivo has a homer in two of his last three games, and needs one more to reach 20 in a season for the first time in his career.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesSunday 8/30, 9:20 PM CT
Miguel Olivo went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the Royals' 3-0 shutout of the Mariners behind Zach Greinke.

Our View: Olivo has 17 homers this season, great power production for a catcher, but is hitting just .242. A .164 month of July killed his average.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesWednesday 8/26, 4:45 PM CT
Miguel Olivo was productive in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to Cleveland at Kauffman Stadium, as he went 2-for-4 with an RBI. He hit a single and a double.

Our View: Olivo has a five-game hitting streak, with one homer and four RBI over the span. He is hitting .286 this month as well, after holding a dismal .164 batting average in July.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesTuesday 8/11, 11:07 PM CT
Miguel Olivo went 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored in tonight's 14-6 win at Minnesota. He hit a single, triple and a solo homer off Brian Duensing.

Our View: Olivo hit a homer in each of his last two games, and tied his career season-high with 16. He should remain a solid source for power among catchers for fantasy owners that can handle his .246 batting average.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesSunday 7/5, 5:41 PM CT
Miguel Olivo went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer off reliever D.J. Carrasco in Sunday's 6-3 win over the White Sox at Kauffman Stadium.

Our View: Olivo leads the Royals with 13 homers, and should remain a nice source for power among fantasy catchers if you can deal with his .249 batting average. Eight of his homers were launched in June.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesWednesday 7/1, 2:33 PM CT
According to FOX Sports, Miguel Olivo has been suspended for one game due to a heated argument with an umpire in Pittsburgh last Saturday.

Our View: Olivo was also fined an undisclosed amount for his expletive-laced rant. Olivo chose to serve the suspension today, leaving the Royals without an experienced catcher. John Buck is currently out with a back injury.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesMonday 6/29, 10:42 PM CT
Miguel Olivo went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in tonight's 4-2 win over the Twins at Kauffman Stadium. He hit a single, triple and a solo homer off Nick Blackburn.

Our View: Olivo continues to enjoy a power surge, as he crushed his eighth homer of June. He only hit four homers over the first two months of the season.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesWednesday 6/24, 11:22 PM CT
Miguel Olivo went 1-for-1 with a solo homer off reliever Jeff Fulchino in tonight's 4-3 win at Houston.

Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesFriday 6/19, 10:29 PM CT

Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesSunday 6/14, 7:53 PM CT
Miguel Olivo led the way offensively for the Royals on Sunday in their 7-1 win over the Reds. Olivo went 2-for-4 with a double, a homer, two runs scored, and four RBI in the game.

Our View: Olivo has started to show off the power stroke, as he has homered four times this week. Fantasy owners should keep him in the lineup while he is hitting for power, but don't expect him to keep it up for long.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesThursday 6/11, 10:06 PM CT
Miguel Olivo went 1-for-4 with a solo homer off reliever Greg Aquino in Thursday's 4-3 loss at Cleveland.

Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesTuesday 6/9, 9:22 PM CT
Miguel Olivo went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in Tuesday's 8-4 loss at Cleveland. His other knock was a single.

Our View: Olivo was in need of a solid outing as he only had one hit over his previous five games. He has two homers so far this month, and six for the season.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesTuesday 6/2, 9:12 PM CT
Miguel Olivo was productive in Tuesday's 6-2 loss at Tampa Bay, as he went 2-for-3 with an RBI. He hit a single and a homer.

Our View: Olivo is hitting well, as he recorded an RBI in three straight games, with two homers over the span. Keep him active in fantasy lineups.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesSaturday 5/30, 8:59 PM CT
Miguel Olivo went 1-for-3 with a solo homer in Saturday's 5-3 loss to the White Sox at Kauffman Stadium.

Our View: He entered the game at catcher when John Buck was forced out with back spasms. Olivo collected his fourth homer of the season and his 14th RBI.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesSaturday 5/23, 3:11 PM CT
Miguel Olivo went 2-for-3 in Saturday's 5-0 loss at St. Louis. Both of his hits were doubles.

Our View: The Royals only mustered five hits as a team. Olivo is hitting .289 in May after hitting an anemic .178 in April. He has eight RBI over 13 games this month as well.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesSaturday 5/16, 12:37 AM CT
Miguel Olivo went 1-for-4 on Friday with a home run, a run scored, and three RBI in the Royals' 8-1 win over the Orioles.

Our View: Olivo has been quiet this season, and his fantasy value just isn't very good. Still, he can occasionally provide some good games, so Royals fans should hope that he can make leaving the yard a more regular occurrence.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesSaturday 5/2, 11:12 PM CT
Miguel Olivo went 2-for-4 with three RBI in Saturday's 10-7 win at Minnesota.

Our View: Olivo has recorded three RBI in two of his last four games, but still only has seven RBI for the season (15 games).
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesMonday 4/27, 10:28 PM CT
Miguel Olivo was 1-for-3 with a walk, three RBI, and a run scored in Kansas City's 7-1 win over Toronto on Monday.

Our View: Olivo is still getting the majority of the start over John Buck, and the Royals' patience is beginning to pay off as he has four hits in his last four games. Olivo only holds value in the deepest of leagues.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesMonday 4/27, 1:19 PM CT
Miguel Olivo is struggling with a .184 average over 38 at-bats this season, according to the Kansas City Star. He has struck out 17 times, with four coming over his last three games.

Our View: Olivo has some pop in his bat, but is not worth employing in fantasy lineups right now, namely in leagues that penalize points for strikeouts.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesSaturday 4/18, 11:46 PM CT
Miguel Olivo homered in the seventh inning of Saturday's 2-0 win over the Rangers. His blast added some insurance in Zack Greinke's complete game shutout.

Our View: The homer was Olivo's first and just his second extra-base hit on the season. He's only .167 on the season, and if you have other options at catcher, it's probably best to use that guy.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesSunday 3/22, 7:40 PM CT
Miguel Olivo went 2-for-5 with two solo home runs in Sunday's 18-12 loss to the Angels. The catcher is hitting .346 with four home runs this spring.

Our View: Olivo has been promised the starting job this season in Kansas City, but he has always owned a terrible OBP as he simply cannot draw a walk. While he's having a good spring, he is at best a backup catcher in fantasy leagues.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesTuesday 3/17, 8:36 PM CT
Miguel Olivo hit his first two home runs of the spring in Tuesday's contest. He was 2-for-4 with four RBI and is hitting .353 in Cactus League play.

Our View: Olivo has been solid this spring and will start for the Royals this season, but he is a late option at catcher for fantasy owners. Especially in mixed leagues.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesMonday 11/3, 11:27 PM CT
The Kansas City Star reports that Miguel Olivo was promised a starting job before agreeing to stay in Kansas City earlier on Monday.

Our View: Olivo hit .255 in 306 at-bats last season. He had 22 doubles, 12 home runs and 41 RBI. Although he slugged .444 he had 82 strikeouts to just seven walks. He did manage seven steals on the season.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesMonday 11/3, 5:30 PM CT
MLB.com reports that the Kansas City Royals have announced that the team and catcher Miguel Olivo have picked up their mutual options, guaranteeing a contract for the 2009 season.

Our View: Olivo has said he’s only interested in returning to Kansas City if he’s the No. 1 guy behind the plate. In 306 at-bats last season he hit .255 with 12 home runs and 41 RBI.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesSunday 9/28, 12:33 PM CT
Heading into the season finale, manager Trey Hillman is uncertain who will be the Royals' starting catcher in 2009 between Miguel Olivo and John Buck, according to the KC Star. Hillman said, "It’s just something we’re going to have to continue to massage through in the off-season, after we have a little time to decompress and evaluate some things. Miggy has done a great job of continuing to improve his game management. Buck’s throwing has gotten better. His release times have improved, So I actually see improvement from both of them in the areas that they needed to improve."

Our View: Olivo has said he’s only interested in returning to Kansas City if he’s the No. 1 guy behind the plate. The team and Olivo have a mutual option on a $2.7 million option, but the Royals could also choose to decline the option and offer arbitration. Buck will be eligible for arbitration after making $2.2 million this season.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesSunday 9/7, 11:22 AM CT
Olivo should see more playing time at catcher than John Buck for the rest of the season, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View: The Royals are continuing to get a look at Olivo's skills behind the plate. Olivo is a fair option in two-catcher leagues for the rest of the season.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesSunday 8/31, 6:04 PM CT
Catcher Miguel Olivo and manager Trey Hillman have kissed and made up. "We talked like 30 minutes (on Saturday)," Olivo informs the Kansas City Star. "We talked man to man. It was good. It’s over." Olivo recently vented about his playing time this season and vowed he would not return to Kansas City.

Our View: We doubt the chat changes Olivo's mind about 2009. He could be an okay No. 2 fantasy catcher if he ends up in the right spot.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesFriday 8/29, 9:47 AM CT
Catcher Miguel Olivo is not happy with Royals manager Trey Hillman and the amount of playing time he has seen, and said he will not be back with the team next year, as his contract includes a mutual option, according to the Kansas City Star. Asked if he'd be back for 2009, Olivo bluntly said, "Hell no."

Our View: Olivo also said that, "I think (Hillman) doesn’t like me sometimes." Olivo has a solid slugging percentage at .472, to go along with an average of .264 and 11 home runs, but his OBP is just .291 on the year. He'll pick up his catching gear and head elsewhere next season.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesThursday 8/14, 1:45 PM CT
Miguel Olivo's suspension was reduced from five games to four, and he began serving the penalty Thursday against the White Sox, according to the AP. Olivo was fined and suspended after charging the mound during the Royals’ 14-3 win over Chicago on August 3, and he said, "I knew I’d get suspended. I’m not happy at all."

Our View: He will miss the three-game set against the Yankees, and could return August 19 at Cleveland.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesTuesday 8/5, 3:07 PM CT
Miguel Olivo has been suspended five games for his role in Sunday's brawl with the White Sox, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View: If Olivo appeals the decision he could remain in the line-up for a couple days.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesSunday 8/3, 9:48 PM CT
Miguel Olivo went 1-for-3 with two RBI before things really got interesting on Sunday. Olivo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, charged the mound, and started a bench clearing brawl before being ejected from the game.

Our View: After the game Olivo said the HBP was on purpose. What Miguel, with the bases loaded? Are you really gonna stick with that story? Olivo was suspended the first four games of this season for starting a bench clearing fight at the end of '07, so expect the league to suspend him here for a minimum of five games for this infraction.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesTuesday 7/29, 11:25 PM CT
We are less than 48 hours away from the trade deadline and Royals general manager Dayton Moore reports the club has no deals in the works, according to MLB.com.

Our View: There were reports that the Blue Jays were interested in catcher Miguel Olivo and the Red Sox might take a run at reliever Ron Mahay. Olivo, Mahay and second baseman Mark Grudzielanek have been considered among the more marketable players on the Royals. Right now the Royals claim no one is calling, but that could change. We'll keep you posted on all of the deadline deals, so stay tuned.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesMonday 6/30, 11:50 PM CT
Miguel Olivo homered on an 0-2 George Sherrill pitch to force extra innings on Monday night. The home run was the ninth of the season for the Royals' catcher.

Our View: Olivo pinch hit for Mark Teahen tying the game at five leading to a 6-5 extra inning win for the never-say-die Royals
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesFriday 6/13, 7:51 PM CT
Miguel Olivo continues to receive at-bats, even in National League parks where the designated hitter isn't used. Olivo is starting at catcher and will square off against Diamondbacks starter Doug Davis.

Our View: Olivo is 2-8 against Davis. At-bats he received while playing for the Florida Marlins.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesMonday 6/9, 3:19 PM CT
Miguel Olivo went 2-for-4 and hit a two-run homer in Monday's 3-2 win over the Yankees.

Our View: He has eight homers and 25 RBI over 41 games played, and raised his average to .289.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesMonday 5/26, 2:33 PM CT
Miguel Olivo went 1-for-3 and collected his 20th RBI of the season in Monday's 7-2 loss to Toronto. Olivo also registered his second stolen base of the season. He started the game at catcher.

Our View: That was his 12th RBI in May, and he is hitting .339 (18-for-53) in the month as well. He should continue to see more playing time while he is hot.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesThursday 5/22, 4:40 PM CT
Miguel Olivo went deep for the sixth time on Thursday as he had three hits and five RBI for the Royals in their loss to the Red Sox.

Our View: Olivo has been a very productive bat this season with 19 RBI in just 90 AB as he continues to split time with John Buck. Buck has only two home runs in 109 AB with 14 RBI, so Olivo just might be earning himself a few extra starts with his bat.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesFriday 5/16, 11:58 PM CT
Miguel Olivo went 2-for-4 and belted a two-run homer in Friday's 7-6 win over the Marlins. That was his fifth homer of the season.

Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesSunday 5/4, 3:28 PM CT
Miguel Olivo went 2-for-4 with one RBI and crushed his fourth homer of the season in Sunday's 2-0 win over Cleveland.

Our View: He has four homers and nine RBI over 51 at-bats, and served another game as the Royals' DH today.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesFriday 5/2, 5:44 PM CT
Backup catcher Miguel Olivo is filling the Royals designated hitter role on Friday night. Billy Butler is at first base and Ross Gload has the night off.

Our View: Olivo will occasionally hit from the designated hitter spot as manager Trey Hillman likes his backup catcher's bat in the lineup.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesTuesday 4/15, 12:24 AM CT
Miguel Olivo justified his DH start by going 3-for-4 with a homer, two runs, and two RBI in Monday's win over the Mariners. It was his second straight game in the DH spot.

Our View: Olivo has decent pop, but he's never been a good enough all-around hitter for us to think he'd serve as a DH. But, hey, AL-only fantasy owners can take advantage of the extra playing time.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesSaturday 4/5, 2:47 PM CT
Catcher Miguel Olivo has been activated from the suspended list by the Kansas City Royals, according to USAToday.com. Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesTuesday 3/18, 9:16 AM CT

Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesWednesday 2/20, 12:47 PM CT
The Royals will start the season one player short of the 25-man roster. Newly acquired catcher, Miguel Olivo, must serve a five-game suspension stemming from last years on-field fracas with Mets shortstop Jose Reyes while a member of the Florida Marlins, notes the KC Star. Olivo has appealed the suspension, and a ruling on that appeal could shorten the five-day punishment. Olivo has appealed the suspension, and a ruling could shorten the five-day punishment. It's unlikely, however, Olivo will receive total clemency.
Miguel Olivo, C, Colorado RockiesFriday 2/15, 8:56 AM CT
The Royals could use backup catcher Miguel Olivo in left field some this year. "You might look out there and see a simulated bunting game without anyone at their primary position," manager Trey Hillman said in the Kansas City Star. "You might see Miguel Olivo in left field. It could happen because I like to create options. It gives us flexibility. He can run a little bit... and Miguel tears up left-handed pitching." Olivo has a .291 career average against left-handers and a .220 career average against right-handers. He was already in line for a couple starts per week. Perhaps he'll get a few starts in left, as well, making Olivo a viable AL-only play.
