Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 8/21, 7:23 PM CT
ESPN.com reports that A's pitcher Justin Duchscherer will miss the rest of the season after being diagnosed with depression.

Our View: The A's have reclassified Duchscherer's DL status to reflect his clinical depression. Apparently he has been battling the condition for some time now, but only recently came forward to set an example for other athletes suffering with the same affliction. He now joins Khalil Greene, Joey Votto, Zach Greinke and Dontrelle Willis on the list of baseball players who have recently dealt with the disease.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 8/16, 11:26 PM CT
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Justin Duchscherer will not pitch on Monday due to a "non-baseball related issue".

Our View: Duchscherer is finally healthy, but still won't be pitching for the A's. No word on what the non-baseball issue is about, but it's serious enough to keep him off the mound and record an inning in 2009. Brett Tomko will get the start in his place.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 8/14, 8:26 AM CT
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that injured A's starter Justin Duchscherer threw five scoreless innings in his final rehab start.

Our View: Duchscherer pitched in a rookie league game in Scottsdale to finish up his rehab. He is expected to be back with the A's next week and rejoin their rotation. Having missed the entire season to this point, he will be a risky fantasy start upon his return, but comes with plenty of upside.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 8/13, 10:42 AM CT
Updating a previous report, A's pitcher Justin Duchscherer is now expected to pitch for the team on Tuesday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He was originally projected to start Friday, but the team wanted him to throw another session in the minors before bringing him up.

Our View: Duchscherer will go on Tuesday against the Yankees as long as his 60-pitch outing goes well tonight. He won't be a good matchup on Tuesday, but AL-only leaguers will want to give him a look for the stretch run, and mixed leaguers should monitor him as well.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 8/12, 9:12 AM CT
The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that A's starter Justin Duchscherer could return to the team as soon as Friday. The A's will need a starter to take the place of the injured Dallas Braden, and Duchscherer looks to be ready after his impressive rehab start for Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday.

Our View: If the A's do make the move to Duchscherer, he will be on an 80-pitch limit, but he could be a nice boost to the team if he is healthy. Duchscherer is a former All-Star, representing the A's both as a starter and a reliever, so the team has some options with him for the rest of the season. If he would rejoin the rotation as a regular, he would definitely be worth a look in most leagues.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 8/10, 7:35 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer fared well during his minor league rehab outing with Triple-A Sacramento Sunday, according to MLB.com. He has been recovering from elbow surgery.

Our View: He allowed two hits and no runs, and 42 of his 55 pitches landed for strikes. Oakland skipper Bob Geren was pleased with his outing, and Duchscherer could return to the team if he fares fine over a few more rehab starts.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 8/7, 8:24 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer is slated to throw a pen session Wednesday and make a rehab start with Triple-A Sacramento Sunday if he fares fine, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He has been recovering from right elbow surgery.

Our View: He is hopeful of returning to Oakland before the end of the season, potentially in early September. He is worth holding in AL-only leagues.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 7/31, 6:35 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer has been scratched from Friday's rehab start with Triple-A Sacramento, according to the Contra Costa Times.

Our View: Duchscherer did not pitch for a non baseball-related reason, and he supposedly did not suffer a setback in his recovery from elbow surgery. Stay tuned for updates.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 7/27, 2:38 PM CT
FoxSports.com is reporting that the A's would most likely be willing to move rehabbing starter Justin Duchscherer for a modest return. Duchscherer, a two-time All-Star, hasn't pitched in the league since last season.

Our View: Duchscherer could be a nice addition to a contender who is looking for cheaper rotation help before the deadline. He will be a free agent after this season, so any potential trade partner would have to pick up the remaining $1.3 million of his contract.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 7/27, 1:07 PM CT
MiLB.com is reporting that injured A's pitcher Justin Duchscherer threw two perfect innings for Single-A Stockton on Sunday in his first rehab appearance. Duchscherer did not allow a baserunner and struck out two.

Our View: The A's couldn't be happier with this start by Duchscherer, and he will continue with his rehab assignment later this week. The team hopes he can return sometime in August, and with a few more positive outings like this they may just get their wish.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 7/24, 1:57 PM CT
The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that the Oakland A's have decided to move up the rehab start of Justin Duchscherer from Monday to Sunday. Duchscherer is expected to throw two innings for Single-A Stockton on Sunday instead of throwing Monday at a rookie-league game.

Our View: The former All-Star looks to be on track for a return to Oakland sometime in August, and barring a setback, the middle of the month looks to be the ETA for Duchscherer. He will probably not give much in the way of fantasy production, as the team will likely be very careful with him, but he may be a nice late season addition if he is completely healthy for the last two months or so.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 7/21, 10:49 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer threw 20 pitches during a simulated game Tuesday, according to MLB.com. He has been recovering from elbow surgery.

Our View: His session went well, and Duchscherer noted that he felt great. He is slated to begin a minor league rehab assignment Monday. Barring a setback, he could return to Oakland in mid-August.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 7/20, 10:22 AM CT
MLB.com is reporting that A's starter Justin Duchscherer threw from 120 feet on Saturday and is scheduled to throw a simulated game on Tuesday. Duchscherer is still trying to return from right elbow surgery.

Our View: Assuming all goes well in the simulated game, Duchscerer is scheduled to throw two innings in a minor league rehab start on July 26. He will probably spend a decent amount of time in the minors since he hasn't pitched all season, but look for a return to to the team in mid-August.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 7/16, 8:37 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer threw 30 pitches during a side session Thursday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He is recovering from March right elbow surgery.

Our View: Barring a setback, he is slated to begin a rehab assignment in late July. He could return to Oakland at some point in August, but is only worth stashing in deeper fantasy leagues at this point.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 7/8, 9:56 AM CT
MLB.com is reporting that A's starter Justin Duchscherer is still on track to start a minor league rehab assignment by the end of the month. Duchscherer is still recovering from offseason elbow surgery.

Our View: Duchscherer is still moving along slowly and cautiously, but the A's don't want to take any chances with him injuring the elbow more seriously. Don't expect much, if any, fantasy output from Duchscherer this season, but he should be ready to go in 2010.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 6/30, 8:01 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer has been given the green light to resume his throwing program, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He has been recovering from right elbow surgery.

Our View: He was able to throw long-toss from 50 feet without any issues today. He should not return to Oakland before the All-Star break, and may only be used as a reliever upon his return. He is only worth stashing in AL-only and deeper mixed leagues.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 6/26, 10:10 AM CT
According to MLB.com, A's pitcher Justin Duchscherer is scheduled to meet with bullpen coach Ron Romanick on Friday and then begin throwing again within the next few days. Duchscherer is still recovering from right elbow surgery.

Our View: It is unclear at this point when Duchscherer will be able to return, as he has suffered numerous setbacks while trying to come back this season. If he starts throwing this weekend it would be a good sign, but don't expect to see him contributing any time soon.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 6/10, 7:25 PM CT
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Justin Duchscherer will need a week or two before he returns to working off of the mound. He has thrown twice at 120 feet this week.

Our View: Duchscherer has had a number of setbacks following his elbow surgery, and it still seems that he is at least a month away from returning to the big leagues. If you need his DL spot, you should use it.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 6/7, 7:37 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer, who has been rehabbing from elbow surgery, will resume throwing in Phoenix Monday after missing nearly a week with a sore back, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: The A's are considering using him as a reliever upon his return, namely as they like their collection of young starting pitchers, led by Dallas Braden. Duchscherer's fantasy value would obviously take a hit if he returns as a reliever rather than a starter.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 6/1, 8:28 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer's rehab from elbow surgery has been delayed as he is now dealing with a tight lower back, according to MLB.com.

Our View: He was eligible to come off the 60-day DL this week, but is now not likely going to return this month. He will need to rebuild the arm strength that he is losing while shut down. He is unsure if he can return before the All-Star break, and skipper Bob Geren does not have a timetable.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 5/30, 9:42 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer has had another setback in his throwing program, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The setback was not defined, but he has temporarily stopped throwing.

Our View: Earlier in the week, back issues caused him to miss some work. Dukes is not expected back until late June at the earliest, and he would likely need a few rehab starts before joining the A's rotation. He carried a 2.54 ERA through 141.2 innings last season, so he's obviously worth keeping an eye on.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 5/27, 7:34 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer has resumed his throwing program in Arizona after missing two days with a stiff back, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He has been rehabbing from right elbow surgery.

Our View: Duchscherer will be out until at least mid-June. He established himself as the ace of the A's rotation in 2008, and shall remain stashed on fantasy rosters.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 5/23, 10:46 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer is progressing in his recovery from right elbow surgery, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: He fared well during his first pitching session, and is looking forward to returning to Oakland in the second half of the season. He is worth stashing in deeper leagues.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 5/14, 7:24 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer will throw off the mound for the first time since undergoing March elbow surgery in mid-May, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: He will need several rehab outings to get his pitch count up to start, so it seems unlikely he will be ready to come off the DL when first eligible June 4.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 4/30, 7:36 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer (elbow surgery) has been transferred to the 60-day DL by the Athletics, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Duchscherer will be out until at least early June, and it is uncertain if he will pitch in the rotation or bullpen upon his return. He is only worth stashing in AL-only and deeper mixed leagues.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 4/28, 3:48 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer's (elbow surgery) conditioning program is going well and he will begin playing light catch, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Duchscherer thinks he will be ready to throw off a mound in a game in about a month. It will likely be 10-14 days minimum before he begins throwing off a mound during his rehab process, and he is also likely to go out on a rehab assignment.

Our View: He is more likely to return to Oakland in early-June rather than late-May. He would like to return as a starter, but it remains to be determined if he will work in the rotation or bullpen when he comes back.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 4/26, 8:53 AM CT
Pitcher Justin Duchscherer has begun a conditioning program that includes bike riding and range-of-motion exercises, the San Francisco Chronicle notes. He underwent right elbow surgery on March 31. Initial timetables called for minimum of a six-week recovery. Duchscherer is not slated to throw soon.

Our View: This certainly doesn't sound like a guy who will come close to that six-week minimum. We won't feel good about the Duke until he is throwing off a mound and inching towards a minor league rehab assignment.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 3/29, 12:58 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer's exploratory arthroscopic surgery on his elbow is scheduled for Tuesday with Dr. Lewis Yocum, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: He will be on the shelf for a minimum of six weeks while recovering. Duchscherer is still worth stashing as an injury flier for mixed leagues. He held a 1.00 WHIP over 22 starts in 2008.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 3/27, 7:57 PM CT
The Associated Press reports that Justin Duchscherer will undergo arthroscopic elbow surgery. He will likely miss the first two months of the season.

Our View: This is terrible news for Oakland, but don't tell us you didn't see it coming. The Duch was spot on last year with a 2.54 ERA in his first season as a starter. But the conversion from a set up role and the increase in innings seems to have taken a toll on his elbow.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 3/27, 7:47 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer pitched in a minor league game on Thursday but had to cut the outing short after experiencing elbow pain, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: "Needless to say, this is bad news," general manager Billy Beane said. "I can't say he'll definitely (start the season) on the DL, but it's certainly fair to say that it's likely under the circumstances." Duchscherer also stated that his arm felt worse and worse after every pitch. This situation is starting to look uglier and uglier as Opening Day approaches, and it looks like one of last year's brightest surprises will have a whole lot going against him in an attempt for a repeat performance in 2009.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 3/23, 7:24 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer, who is recovering from an elbow ailment, is slated for a bullpen session Monday, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: If his session goes fine without any issues, he could be ready to pitch in a minor league game soon. He won't be ready to serve in the rotation for opening day, but could see action in the bullpen to build up his arm strength.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 3/20, 5:12 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer threw an abbreviated bullpen session Friday to test his injured elbow, according to the Associated Press. "I'm excited, because it's the first time I've thrown with some velocity without pain," said Duchscherer, who threw 25 pitches from a mound. "That's certainly a positive sign."

Our View: Duchscherer is still a week away from appearing in an exhibition game, but he did throw his pitches at about 90 percent velocity. It has been determined that he will not start the season in the rotation, but it's possible he could land in the bullpen as a way to build up his pitch count.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 3/18, 7:25 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer is improving in his recovery from an elbow ailment, according to the SF Chronicle. He played long toss (about 65 throws from 120 feet) and indicated that he no longer felt sharp elbow pain. He received a cortisone shot three days ago and said, "The shot seemed to help quite a bit. If I can get the pain in my elbow to go away completely, I do not think it will take that long to be game-ready."

Our View: Duchscherer can pitch like an ace for the A's when healthy, but his track record with injuries makes him a risky fantasy prospect.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 3/15, 8:24 AM CT
Starter Justin Duchscherer reported persistent pain in his troublesome elbow while playing long toss on Saturday and will miss the start of the season, according to the Associated Press. "When I got to 75-80 percent, it started hurting," Duchscherer said. "The more I threw, the worse it got. Instead of taking a few more days off, we're going to hit it hard with cortisone and take it from there."

Our View: Duchscherer said the setback will severely limit his chances of building up his pitch count, thus the projected timeline for his return.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 3/13, 10:35 AM CT
The SF Chronicle reports that Justin Duchscherer has continued his long toss program and could see action on a mound as soon as next week. Pitching coach, Curt Young, thinks that there is a slight chance that Duchscherer will be ready for Opening Day.

Our View: Chances are his elbow recovery won't go that smoothly and he won't make the opening day start, but we could still see him early in the season. Draft with caution, as Duchscherer is obviously a big injury risk, but he is capable of paying big dividends when healthy.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 3/10, 7:16 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer, who is dealing with an elbow ailment, made 24 throws from 120 feet with no problem Monday, according to thr SF Chronicle.

Our View: His schedule going forward will be determined by how he feels. Duchscherer is capable of solid production if healthy, but should be drafted with caution, as he made four trips to the DL over the last three years.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 3/9, 7:20 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer plans to play catch on Tuesday, according to the SF Chronicle. He is dealing with an elbow ailment.

Our View: Duchscherer is no stranger to the disabled list, as he made four trips over the last three years. He is capable of solid production if healthy, but should be drafted with caution.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 3/7, 1:36 PM CT
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that sources within the Athletics organization have suggested a move back to the bullpen for Justin Duchscherer in an effort to limit the possibility for further injury. His response? "No chance. I wouldn't do it." He is currently battling a sore elbow, but hopes to be able to start on opening day.

Our View: In 426.2 innings over the course of his major league career, Duchscherer has a 3.14 ERA. From 2004 through 2006 he excelled as a reliever in Oakland, but then injuries became more of a factor. Last season he threw a career-high 141.2 innings while making 22 starts.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 3/6, 1:08 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Justin Duchscherer is doubtful to take the hill on opening day due to his ailing elbow, according to ESPN. He will be shut down for the next few days, and is hoping rest and medication will help with the pain.

Our View: He will rest his elbow until Monday, then he intends to play long-toss from a distance of 100-120 feet. There is no major damage and Tommy John surgery is not necessary, but he may need arthroscopic surgery and a cleanup that would force him to miss around six weeks. The procedure would be a worst-case scenario. Edgar Gonzalez or Jerome Williams could replace Duchscherer in the rotation if he is not ready for the start of the season.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 3/6, 7:55 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer visited Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles to evaluate his ailing right elbow, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: The club is yet to update his status. Edgar Gonzalez or Jerome Williams could work in the rotation if Duchcherer is forced to start the season on the DL.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 3/4, 8:09 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer still has pain in his right elbow, according to the SF Chronicle. A similar ailment cost the hurler most of the spring in 2006 and 2007.

Our View: Duchscherer may need to start the season on the DL, which could temporarily open a spot in the rotation for Edgar Gonzalez or Jerome Williams. Duchscherer should be downgraded as a fantasy hurler right now to be safe.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 3/3, 11:58 AM CT
A's hurler Justin Duchscherer will see a doctor on Tuesday and have his sore right elbow examined, according to the Contra Costa Times.

Our View: The extent of any injury Duchscherer is suffering should be known in due time. His potential fantasy value lies heavily in what the outcome of that may be.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 2/28, 7:52 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer is aiming for March 12 to make his first Cactus League start, according to the SF Chronicle. He is dealing with elbow tenderness.

Our View: He will need around five starts before the regular season, and he had no issues while throwing 20 pitches off a mound Thursday. The A's ace has a poor track record with durability, and looks to be a risky fantasy option.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 2/27, 6:21 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Justin Duchscherer elbow injury is frustrating the All-Star and that the team still has no timetable regarding his return.

Our View: The A's coaches maintain that this is routine soreness for Duchscherer and say he is day-to-day. However, you'll want to keep a close eye on him this spring. His 2.54 ERA is very unlikely to be repeated, but you would hope he'd be able to top his 141.2 innings pitched. Now that's looking less likely.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 2/25, 11:33 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer is progressing in his recovery from elbow stiffness, according to the SF Chronicle. Duchscherer will be on a throwing program now and back on the mound, barring setbacks, at some point next week.

Our View: Duchscherer will remain an injury risk as a fantasy hurler, and should be left for deeper leagues to be safe.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 2/24, 12:14 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer will have his throwing session pushed back a couple days and he was seen icing his elbow on Tuesday, according to the Oakland Tribune.

Our View: Duchscherer underwent hip surgery last season, and spent time recovering from that. It may be that he is just experiencing typical spring soreness in the arm, as he says he'll likely be back in a matter of days.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 2/16, 7:17 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer threw his first bullpen session of camp and his fourth overall since undergoing hip surgery last September, according to the SF Chronicle. He threw 31 pitches and said, "I am pretty pleased. It was not midseason form, but, physically, I felt good."

Our View: He looks to be on pace to pitch on opening day. He will remain a risky fantasy prospect due to his recent battle with injuries, but is worth targeting if you can acquire him for a bargain.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 1/24, 3:07 PM CT
The Oakland A's have signed hurler Justin Duchscherer to a one-year deal, according to ESPN.com.

Our View: Duchscherer will make $3.9 million in 2008. He had a great year last season - when he was healthy. He had hip surgery, and is supposedly not going to be limited before the season starts, but fantasy owners should draft him knowing he is an injury risk.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 1/23, 7:24 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer will not be limited during spring training, according to the SF Chronicle. He has been recovering from hip surgery.

Our View: Duchscherer will still be an injury risk for 2009, but is worth targeting as a sleeper as he held a solid 2.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 22 starts last season, and should improve upon his 10 wins with Jason Giambi and Matt Holliday added to the offense.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 12/20, 7:04 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer has begun throwing in Phoenix, according to the SF Chronicle. The hurler had scar tissue cleaned out of his surgically repaired right hip in a minor operation in September.

Our View: He is expected to be ready at the start of the 2009 season.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 9/30, 8:22 PM CT
Updating an earlier story, Justin Duchscherer said that the surgery on his hip to remove torn cartilage when as expected, according to MLB.com. "Everything went well," Duchscherer said. "I just had some torn cartilage cleaned out. I'll be fine in two months."

Our View: Duchscherer should be fine for 2009, and while there is no way one can reasonably expect a repeat of his efforts this season (2.54 ERA, 1.00 WHIP), he should be a fine starter if you keep your expectations in line with what should reasonably be expected.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 9/30, 7:03 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer underwent exploratory arthroscopic surgery on his right hip in Nashville on Monday, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: The A's are yet to provide an update on Duchscherer, who ended the 2008 campaign with a strong 2.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 9/23, 8:50 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer is officially shut down for the remainder of the season, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: Duchscherer will visit Dr. Thomas Byrd, who repaired his hip in July 2007. Duchscherer wants a precise answer about what is causing the recent soreness in his hip before he begins his off-season workouts.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 9/18, 3:21 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer threw 10 pitches in a simulated game Thursday before spiking the ball to the ground in frustration after experiencing discomfort in his strained right hip, according to the AP.

Our View: The team was hopeful he could be ready to start Saturday's game against Seattle, but now it appears that he could be done for the remainder of the season. He held a solid 2.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 22 starts.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 9/18, 7:00 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer, who is recovering from a strained right hip, played catch and is expected to briefly throw to hitters Thursday morning, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: Barring a setback, Duchscherer could start Saturday against Seattle, but because he has missed more than a month with his injury, his pitch count is likely to be limited. Oakland does not currently have a starter listed for that day.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 9/17, 7:04 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer threw a bullpen session with a 100 percent effort level and felt no pain in his right hip, according to the SF Chronicle. He will throw another pen session Thursday, and if that also goes favorably, he could start one of the weekend games against Seattle.

Our View: If he were to return to the hill Saturday, he'd be able to step into the spot vacated by left-hander Dallas Braden, who is expected to miss the remainder of the season with a strained groin.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 9/15, 7:06 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer, who is recovering from hip inflammation, may be ready to rejoin Oakland's rotation early this week, according to the SF Chronicle. He will throw a bullpen session Tuesday.

Our View: He wants to make one or two starts before the end of the season. He has been among the A's best pitchers this season with a 2.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 22 starts.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 9/13, 9:22 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer will play catch today and is scheduled for a bullpen session Monday and another later in the week, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Duchscherer, who is out with inflammation in his hip, wants to make a start or two before the curtain closes on the 2008 season.

Our View: Manager Bob Geren said that if Duchscherer can't start in the final week of the season, he might pitch some in instructional league.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 9/12, 7:04 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer is feeling good as he recovers from a strained right hip, but will have to throw a top-effort bullpen session in order to make another start this season, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: Hopefully fantasy owners will get at least one more start out of him, as he holds a solid 2.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 9/5, 7:57 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer has been shut down for the season according to MLB.com. Duchscherer has been on the disabled list with a strained right hip since Aug. 19 -- the same hip the 30-year-old had surgery on last July. "He's not," Geren said matter-of-factly when asked when Duchscherer would throw again. "He's shut down. He's going to go to see [Dr. Byrd, who] did his surgery last year, to get reevaluated."

Our View: Duchscherer had been enjoying an All-Star season prior to the injury. He had a 2.54 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP in 2008. Hopefully he will not require another surgery.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 9/4, 8:46 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer's injured hip flared up on him yet again on Thursday, and as a result he has been scratched from his next potential start on Saturday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Duchscherer hasn't pitched since August 18th, and given that he has already thrown 141.2 innings this season, just slightly less than the 157.2 innings he threw the previous three seasons, you would have to think that the A's probably won't push Justin back onto the hill until he is close to 100%.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 9/1, 8:45 AM CT
A's starter Justin Duchscherer was in line to pitch for the team on Saturday, but his ailing hip acted up on him during a recent side session, so his status is in doubt, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: Duchscherer may still get the start in one of the team's games in a doubleheader on Saturday, but the team will see how he responds to treatment before making a decision.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 8/31, 8:01 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer is in line to make a start for the A's next Saturday, assuming his right hip is not bothering him, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: Duchscherer has had a terrific season, despite his misleading 10-8 record. Overall, fantasy owners should be thrilled with his 2.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 8/21, 9:36 PM CT
All-star SP Justin Duchscherer has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to Wednesday, because of a pain in the same hip on which he had surgery last summer, according to the AP.

Our View: Duchscherer's MRI revealed no structural damage, so a September return is still in the picture. We'll keep you updated.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 8/21, 7:39 PM CT
Oakland SP Justin Duchscherer is headed to the disabled list after all, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: Duchscherer's MRI revealed no structural damage, so a September return is still in the picture. We'll keep you updated.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 8/21, 4:15 PM CT
The MRI Justin Duchscherer had Wednesday revealed inflammation in his surgically repaired right hip, but no indications of any structural damage, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: This is great news for Duchscherer owners because he could end up avoiding the DL altogether. He is scheduled to get a cortisone shot on Friday, and then rest four or five days before he begins throwing.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 8/19, 7:22 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer returned to the Bay Area on Tuesday to have his sore right hip examined, MLB.com reports. He is in danger of missing his next start. "I'm just hoping [the A's athletic trainers] are right and it's just a little inflammation that we can shoot up and work through," Duchscherer explains. He underwent season-ending right hip surgery last June.

Our View: The A's don't have much reason to push Duchscherer to return for his next start. They'll likely be cautious and find a replacement for this weekend. We'll let you know when they make such a decision, though.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 8/18, 8:29 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer left Monday's game in the third inning with a strained right hip, according to SportsTicker. He was relieved by Kirk Saarloos. Before exiting, it appeared that Duchscherer said to head trainer Steve Sayles, "I can't, I tried I can't," and a few seconds later he said, "No way, I can't pitch through this. I can’t throw."

Our View: This doesn't sound good, especially when you consider Justin had surgery on his right hip last year. We'll give you an update on Duch's injury when more is known.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 8/7, 9:16 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer got a no decision, but allowed four runs in five innings on seven hits and two walks in the A's 6-4 loss to Toronto.

Our View: Duchscherer has now given up 13 runs in his last 18 innings, and his performances have started to wane. He may be undergoing some fatigue and fantasy owners should watch him closely to see if he can rebound.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 8/1, 10:00 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer rebounded from the worst start of his career to hold the mighty Red Sox to but one run over six innings on Friday night.

Our View: Duchscherer returned to the solid starter he has been all season long on this night, though he only struck out two batters on the night. A regression is coming, but after tonight we believe it could be gradual and not profound.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 7/26, 6:15 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer went through easily his worst start of the year, allowing eight earned runs in six innings in Oakland's loss to the Texas Rangers.

Our View: Duchscherer saw his ERA jump half of a run, from 1.87 to 2.37 with this outing. The eight earned runs were two more than he gave up in the entire month of June.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 7/20, 2:45 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer pitched well against the Yankees on Sunday as he only allowed two earned runs on six hits over seven innings, but was dealt a loss, his sixth of the season. Oakland fell 2-1 at Yankee Stadium.

Our View: Duchscherer was still feeling the effects of a throat infection, and fantasy owners should be pleased with his performance despite the loss. He is now 2-1 over four starts in July, and has 10 wins for the season.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 7/20, 7:15 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer is still feeling the effects of a throat infection that bothered him during his last start and the All-Star Game, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: Manager Bob Geren told him that he didn't need to come to the ballpark Saturday. Duchscherer is still scheduled to start today against the Yankees, and should be penciled into your lineups.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 7/14, 6:52 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer is feeling much better after dealing with a throat infection, and he is slated to pitch the sixth inning in Tuesday's All-Star game, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Our View: We're almost more worried about the arm than the throat. The Duke worked 7.2 innings on Sunday, and hopefully he won't have to throw too many pitches against the NL stars.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 7/13, 6:32 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer had his 18-inning scoreless streak end when Howie Kendrick beat the throw to first on a two-out grounder in the fourth, allowing Vladimir Guerrero to score.

Our View: The right-hander extended his streak of allowing three earned runs or fewer to 19 games, and ending the belief that his stellar first half is an aberration. The reliever turned starter has become one of the fantasy elite with a 1.78 ERA and 0.86 WHIP. While his 5.6 K rate doesn't qualify him as a true ace, in combination with his 1.8 BB rate, it makes him very efficient and a threat to win with each start.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 7/8, 11:33 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer faced a mere 30 batters in a complete game, two-hit shutout against the Mariners on Sunday. He struck out four and walked none.

Our View: When it comes to surprises, there are none bigger the Duchscherer. His ERA is a mind-boggling 1.78 after 101 innings and his WHIP is down to 0.86. He's making a strong run at Waiver-Wire Pickup of the Year.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 7/3, 11:05 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer continues to shine. On Thursday night at hitter-friendly US Cingular Field, the A's right-hander pitched seven solid innings helping Oakland to a 3-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. Duchscherer allowed two runs on five hits, walked two and struck out four in the win.

Our View: Duchscherer scored his ninth win of the season and continues to amaze with his transformation from reliever to starter. The two runs allowed raised his ERA from 1.91 to 1.96.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 6/28, 11:46 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer lowered his ERA from 1.99 to 1.91 and became the majors' ERA leader, but he received no offensive support in a 1-0 loss to the Giants on Saturday night.

Our View: The A's right-hander has allowed two or fewer earned runs in 12 of his 13 starts. What he has done in the first three months of the season is a complete aberration of his career peripherals. Sell high -
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 6/28, 12:22 PM CT
Oakland and San Francisco will match up in the continued Battle for the Bay this evening, each sending their best arms to the mound to wage war for the evening, according to the Sports Network. The A's will send reliever-turned-starting phenom Justin Duchscherer for the events of the evening while the Giants counter with RHP Tim Lincecum.

Our View: Duchscherer is currently 8-4 on the year and is boasting an amazing ERA of 1.99. He's riding a four-game win streak and has not allowed more than three earned runs in each of his 13 starts this season. At home, he's a monster, going 6-0 through six starts. Lincecum is 8-1 with a 2.54 ERA. However, he has not found a win in his last three starts despite allowing just seven earned runs over the past 41 1/3 innings.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 6/22, 7:47 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer lowered his ERA to 1.99 on Sunday, and AL best, thanks to 7.2 innings of one run ball on his way to his eighth victory of the season for the Athletics. Justin is 4-0 in June and 6-0 at home.

Our View: Duchscherer has been spectacular this season and appears primed to be selected to the All-Star game as a starter after previously being selected as a reliever. Duchscherer can't possibly keep up this level of production, but that doesn't mean he wont continue to be a solid starter the rest of the way.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 6/22, 11:42 AM CT
Oakland will push RHP Justin Duchscherer to the mound today, hoping he can garner his fourth consecutive win as they face the Florida Marlins, according to the Sports Network.

Our View: Duchscherer found his fourth win in five starts against Arizona on Tuesday, holding the Diamondbacks to one run on five hits through eight innings, now touting an ERA of 2.08. He has yet to face the Marlins in his career but is 5-0 with a 1.60 ERA in five starts at home.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 6/18, 8:26 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer pitched well on Tuesday night, but he was a spectator at the plate. The pitcher tweaked his surgically repaired left hip during his first at-bat and was told to stop swinging, the Arizona Republic notes. Duchscherer ended the night with four strikeouts over four at-bats.

Our View: Luckily, the Duke's hip didn't hinder his pitching performance, and we hope it won't be an issue once these visits to the NL parks are over.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 6/17, 11:26 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer outdueled Brandon Webb Tuesday, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out six over eight innings.

Our View: Duch's move to the rotation this year has gone exceptionally well, as he holds a 2.08 ERA over 11 starts.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 6/12, 12:04 AM CT
The Yankees tried to rally in the top of the ninth, but the A's emerged victorious in the end, 8-4. Oakland RHP Justin Duchscherer got the start and pitched well, going seven innings to surrender just one run on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View: Duchscherer now sits at 6-4 on the season with an ERA of 2.20. The offensive support hasn't always been there, but Duchscherer now touts 16 walks versus 42 strikeouts.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 6/4, 5:39 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer allowed three hits during his 6.2 innings of work on Wednesday and helped the Oakland Athletics beat the Tigers 10-2, completing a three-game sweep of Detroit.

Our View: Wow. See, I said it louder. What can one really say about Duchscherer. He struck out three and faced only one batter over the minimum through the first five innings while winning his fifth game of the season. The right-hander has yet to give up over three earned runs in nine starts this season, yet his record is only 5-4. He did walk a season-high five batters today, but he is so confident right now in his breaking ball he believes he can get out of any walk-fest he contributes to.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 5/24, 10:48 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning Saturday and ended up tossing eight innings of one-hit ball against the Red Sox, striking out four batters in the process.

Our View: Duchscherer's transition from the bullpen to the rotation has gone above and beyond expectations. He now holds a 2.16 ERA through seven starts.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 5/19, 1:04 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer surrendered more than two runs Sunday for the first time in six starts. The right-hander gave up an RBI double to Brian McCann in the first and a two-run single to Yunel Escobar in the second to get off to a rough start.

Our View: More forgettable were Duchscherer's first two at-bats as a big-leaguer, both strikeouts, one with the bases loaded and one trying to sacrifice. In the days leading to his first interleague start, he took only one round of batting practice, and nothing on game day. This sparks the debate of interleague contests, one where AL teams visiting NL teams have a huge disadvantage, while NL teams visiting AL teams don't.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 5/18, 3:38 PM CT
Oakland RHP Justin Duchscherer suffered through one of his worst outings on the season today as the A's fell 5-2 against the Atlanta Braves. Duchscherer lasted just five innings, surrendering three runs (all earned) on seven hits with two walks and two stikeouts.

Our View: That's consecutive losses for Duchscherer after going 3-1 through is first four.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 5/18, 10:48 AM CT
Oakland RHP Justin Duchscherer gets the start for the Athletics today as they battle to catch the LA Angels, just one half-game ahead of the A's for first place in the AL West, facing the Atlanta Braves.

Our View: Duchscherer has lost his only career start versus Atlanta and is coming off a disappointing loss to Cleveland, having surrendered just one run on four hits with six strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings against the Tribe. Dutchy is 3-2 overall this season, touting an impressive 2.20 ERA with 24 strikeouts versus just seven walks.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 5/13, 9:17 PM CT
While the offense for Oakland failed to show, the right arm of starter Justin Duchscherer was working just fine. Duchscherer pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on four hits, walking two and striking out six.

Our View: However, the talented hurler suffers his second loss of the year due to a horrific offensive effort from his teammates, and while his ERA drops to 2.20, this two-game win streak comes to an abrupt end.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 5/6, 11:54 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer picked up his second straight win on Tuesday night. The right-hander held the Orioles to four hits and two runs over seven innings. Duchscherer walked two, struck out four, and stands at 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA.

Our View: Duke has pitched well since coming back from a biceps ailment, and he could easily be 4-0 at this point. This was the first time all year that he worked more than five innings, and it may be time to look at him more seriously in mixed leagues.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 5/2, 12:28 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer allowed six runs in five innings, but only one run was earned as he picked up his second victory of the season. He allowed two home runs and struck out six while throwing 81 pitches in his first game back off the DL.

Our View: Justin wasn't very good on the night, but it also didn't help that Jack Cust forgot how to catch a fly ball. Going five innings and picking up the victory has to be considered an accomplishment coming off an injury for Justin.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 5/1, 9:26 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer will be limited to 90-95 pitches tonight in his second start after missing three weeks with a biceps strain, according to the SF Chronicle. He hopes that he will get through seven or eight innings tonight against the Angels, while on the strict pitch count.

Our View: He is 5-0 with a 1.21 ERA against the Angels, his most wins against any team, and he should be in your lineups, regardless of his pitch limit. He holds a good 1.20 WHIP over 10 innings, with only two walks and eight strikeouts this season.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 4/27, 8:10 AM CT
Athletics RHP Justin Duchscherer hit the mound for the first time since suffering a strained right biceps in early April last night, and while the end result was a loss, Duchscherer pitched rather well.

Our View: Oakland manager Bob Geren pulled Duchscherer off the hill after just 73 pitches, attempting to break the former reliever in without overloading his arm, and the team was happy with his performance: 5 innings pitched, two runs allowed (both earned) on six hits, no walks, two strike outs, 46 total strikes. The hope is to bring Duchscherer slowly and work him into longer starts as the season progresses, but considering the situation, fantasy owners and the team must be pleased with the overall performance and what that indicates looking ahead.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 4/26, 11:45 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer returned from the disabled list to make his first start since April 8th. The right-hander gave up just two runs in five innings, but manager Bob Geren cut short his night after just 73 pitches.

Our View: He is now 0-5 in his career against Seattle, and was against an even better disabled returnee, Eric Bedard, tonight.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 4/26, 7:18 PM CT
The A's activated Justin Duchscherer from the 15-day disabled list on Saturday. The right-hander was on the injury list with a strained right biceps.

Our View: Duchscherer, who is 1-0 with only five innings pitched this year, will start against the Mariners tonight.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 4/23, 5:31 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer has been on the DL because of a strained right biceps, but his rehab has progressed well and it appears that he could activated to start on Saturday, according to MLB.com. "I did what I wanted to do [in Las Vegas], and that was go out and just pound the strike zone and get my mechanics right," Duchscherer said.

Our View: Duchscherer certainly is a long shot to be an effective starter over the course of the season as he has been used exclusively out of the pen the past couple of years, and this early season setback has done nothing to dissuade those who were nervous about Justin's outlook this season.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 4/16, 8:56 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer threw at 140 feet and then did some more vigorous flat ground throwing. He's scheduled for a rehab start on Monday and could rejoin the A's rotation in Seattle on April 26, according to the SF Chronicle. He is recovering from a strained right biceps.

Our View: This is favorable news in his progress.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 4/15, 8:29 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer, who is nursing a biceps strain, has moved his long toss to 140 feet and he could be throwing off a mound soon with the possibility of a rehab start early next week, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: This is good news for him, and he was notably off to a 1-0 start (with a 1.80 ERA) before getting hurt.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsFriday 4/11, 10:22 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer said that he felt great after playing catch for about 30 throws on Thursday, according to the SF Chronicle. Duchscherer is out nursing a biceps strain, and thinks he will be ready to pitch when he's eligible to come off the DL on April 20. He stated, "I did exactly what I wanted to do and I didn't feel anything. I don't see the biceps being an issue." This is good news for him, and he was notably off to a 1-0 start (with a 1.80 ERA) before getting hurt.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 4/8, 6:18 PM CT
The A's placed Justin Duchscherer on the DL Tuesday with a strained right biceps. The right, who is making the move from the bullpen to the rotation this year, suffered the injured in his first start of the year last Friday. He was replaced on the roster by Chad Gaudin, who was activated from the DL and will start tonight in place of Rich Harden. It's not clear at this point how much time Duchscherer will miss.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 4/7, 10:29 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer seems unlikely to make his scheduled start on Wednesday. An MRI revealed only a strain to his right biceps tendon, but he may need to skip a turn. "He feels better," manager Bob Geren tells the Contra Costa Times. "But... his start is still in jeopardy." Chad Gaudin or Lenny DiNardo could start in his place this week.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 4/7, 12:11 AM CT
During the MLB broadcast of the Indians and Oakland game on Sunday night, it was announced that the A's are awaiting results of an MRI exam performed on the pitching arm of Justin Duchscherer before deciding whether he will skip his next scheduled start. Duchscherer, who registered the win on Friday, left the game with slight biceps bursitis.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 4/6, 9:08 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer will undergo an MRI on Sunday to determine the severity of the right-biceps injury (tendinitis) that forced him out of the A's game Friday against the Indians (after six solid innings of work), according to MercuryNews.com. He is taking anti-inflammatory medicine and noted that his arm was feeling better on Saturday.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 4/2, 8:06 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer , making his debut as a starting pitcher after Oakland has converted him from a bullpen role, is likely to be limited to 100 pitches tomorrow versus the Red Sox, according to MLB.com. While the A's want to bring Duchscherer along with caution, they are also excited to see their new late-inning reliever Santiago Casilla. Casilla submitted two perfect innings of work against the Red Sox in Tokyo last week, pitching one scoreless inning. On Wednesday, Casilla got the call with the bases loaded and nobody out in the seventh inning, but he got David Ortiz out on strikes and tempted Manny Ramirez into a rare double play.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 3/22, 7:24 AM CT
MLB.com reports that right-hander Justin Duchscherer is expected to start for Oakland against Hanshin on Saturday. Hanshin features a familiar face in Lew Ford, who played for the Twins from 2003-07. Ford made a highlight-reel catch in Hanshin's 6-5 loss to the Red Sox in the exhibition opener on Friday. The start for Duchscherer, is either his last before entering the A's rotation stateside. Transitioning from the bullpen to the starting rotation, the report notes that Duchscherer, who was a standout starter in the Minors, allowed five runs on nine hits and four walks over eight innings of Cactus League work this spring, and he'll be limited to fewer than 80 pitches against Hanshin.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 3/18, 8:56 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer tossed 71 pitches in Tuesday's game and another 10 in a bullpen session afterward, according to MLB.com. "I honestly felt like I consistently hit the spots I wanted to hit," Duchscherer said. "My arm feels good and my hip feels good. I don't like giving up runs like that." The runs he referenced were four earned on six hits and two walks over four innings. Duchscherer missed the end of last season with an arthritic hip ailment, but he's being stretched out as a starter to begin this season.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 3/4, 11:14 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer's line from his first spring outing wasn't good (one inning, one run, two hits and two walks), but the right-hander is just happy that he's overcoming some of the mental hurdles with his surgically repaired hip, according to the Mercury News. Duchscherer, who is moving from the bullpen to the rotation, was nervous about the hip at first, but said he made a conscious effort to drive hard off the hip when he struck out Gary Matthews to end the fourth inning. "You hear people say that the last thing to come is the mental part of it," he said. "To know that I can pitch pain free is a big deal." Duchscherer has been terrific at times as a setup man, but it will be interesting to see how he fares as a starter. Consider him only as a late-round flyer in AL-only play right now.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 2/18, 10:25 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer, who is reportedly free of the arthritic right hip condition that ended his 2007 season, will began to make his transition from the bullpen to the starting rotation, according to MLB.com "I can give you a thumb's up," said Kurt Suzuki. "He looks good. What I saw was nothing less than a guy who can hit his spots. He's going to give us quality innings every time he goes out there." Duchscherer is compared to having the control of a Greg Maddux in the report. Oakland traded most of their first line starters this winter and it appears the team is ready to look at Duchscherer for a spot in the rotation.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 1/9, 4:30 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer re-signed a one-year contract with the A's on Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Duchscherer posted a 4.96 ERA in 17 relief appearances in 2006, but he's expected to be shifted to the starting rotation this spring. He's recovering from hip surgery.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 11/1, 10:45 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer, who continues to recover from hip surgery, could get an opportunity to win a starting job next spring, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "Health provided," GM Billy Beane said. "It's something Justin has always wanted to do." Duchscherer has made just five big-league starts - the last coming in 2003 - but he was primarily a starter in the minor leagues, so it's reasonable to think he could handle the transition.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 7/2, 8:56 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer will undergo season-ending surgery on his injured right hip, according to the AP. He had been sidelined since May 15 with soreness in his arthritic right hip that didn't get better with rest and rehabilitation. Duchscherer was called back from a minor league rehab assignment in late May when the injury flared up again and called off a throwing session Sunday in New York.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 7/2, 7:42 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer was slated to throw a side session on Sunday. Unfortunately, those plans were canceled because of soreness in his ailing hip, according to the Contra Costa Times. "I had been feeling really good and now I'm not feeling really good," he said. He's dealing with an arthritic condition in his hip, so this likely will be an ongoing problem all season. Regardless, there's no timetable set for his return.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 7/1, 10:16 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer, on the DL with a strained right hip, is improving, according to the AP. However, he's not improving as much as the A's would like. At this point, it's still unclear when he'll be ready to rejoin Oakland's bullpen.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsThursday 6/28, 11:12 PM CT

Justin Duchscherer threw 21 pitches from the front part of the mound on Tuesday and will throw again Thursday, according to the AP. Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 6/26, 12:50 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer played long toss from 150 feet on MOnday and reported no pain, according to the AP. He's been out since May 15 with a strained right hip.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 6/24, 7:43 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer was able to throw from 120 feet on Saturday. He said he needs to stretch out to 150 before throwing off a mound, something he aims to accomplish within a few days, according to the Contra Costa Times. He said he has some bone growth in his arthritic hip that might require surgery at some point. Duchscherer added that if he ends up going that route, he'd want to do it sooner than later in order to be ready for next season. At this point, he's out indefinitely, despite his recent signs of improvement.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 6/18, 8:01 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer has resumed throwing, according to the Contra Costa Times. He had been shut down since the beginning of the month due to his hip injury, so this is a positive sign. However, he he has no timetable for a return to game action right now.
Justin Duchscherer, P, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 6/2, 8:18 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer is expected to be shut down from throwing for at least the next two weeks. He was examined by a hip specialist Friday after feeling pain in the joint during his last rehab appearance, according to the Contra Costa Times. With Huston Street and Duchscherer out for the foreseeable future, Alan Embree will continue closing for the A's.

Justin Duchscherer won't be coming off the DL today after all. He will instead head to Tennessee to see a hip specialist, according to the Mercury News. Duchscherer pitched one inning in a rehabilitation stint for Single-A Stockton on Monday, saying he threw the ball well but that his arthritic right hip was still bothering him. "It hurts when I push off the rubber," he said. "Five to 10 pitches in, the same pain started coming back. And today, it's very sore. So we're going to get it checked out more." The doctor Duchscherer is visiting is the same one that performed hip surgery on Cardinals' closer Jason Isringhausen last year. Isringhausen's injury also had been diagnosed initially as arthritis in the hip.
