Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 10/10, 8:23 PM CT
Joel Pineiro was tagged for four earned runs on seven hits over a mere four innings of work in Saturday's disappointing 5-1 loss to the Dodgers at Busch Stadium. He had three strikeouts and no walks.

Our View: Pineiro struggled in front of the home crowd, and failed in his bid to extend the best-of-five series.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 9/29, 8:58 PM CT
In his final regular season start, Joel Pineiro was blasted by the Reds for seven runs on eight hits and a walk over six innings. He fell to 15-12 on the year after the 7-2 loss.

Our View: This was not the playoff tuneup that Pineiro was looking for. He allowed three homer runs in the game, after allowing just seven combined in every other start this season, and looked more like the Pineiro of 2008 that Cardinals fans lamented.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 9/22, 11:28 PM CT
Joel Pineiro earned his 15th win of the season Tuesday by holding the Astros to one run on five hits and a pair of walks over seven innings. He fanned four in the 11-2 win.

Our View: Pineiro is now one win shy of his career best mark that he set with the Mariners in 2003. His 3.24 ERA also ties a career low, matching his 2002 season.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 9/16, 4:24 PM CT
Joel Pineiro allowed four runs and ten hits in 5.1 innings on Wednesday to the Marlins, taking his second straight loss as the Cardinals lost 5-2 at home.

Our View: He is now 0-2 in his past three starts after winning five straight in late August and early September. His struggles could have something to do with the fact that he is just four innings away from pitching 200 in a season for the first time since 2003 in Seattle.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 9/16, 9:03 AM CT
Joel Pineiro has informed his agent that he would like to work out a deal to remain with the St. Louis Cardinals after this season, according to MLB.com. Pineiro is having a career season for the Cardinals, posting a 14-10 record with a 3.21 ERA.

Our View: Pineiro has looked like a different pitcher this season, so it makes sense that he would want to stay with the Cards for as long as possible. GM John Mozeliak has said the team won't be negotiating with free agents until the season is over, so don't expect anything to happen here until this winter.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 9/11, 10:26 PM CT
Joel Pineiro only allowed one earned run on five hits over seven innings in Friday's 1-0 loss to the Braves at Busch Stadium. He had two walks and seven strikeouts.

Our View: Pineiro pitched great tonight, but was forced to take a loss due to no run support. On the positive side, he trimmed his ERA to 3.28.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 9/6, 4:36 PM CT
Joel Pineiro blew a three-run lead to the Pirates on Sunday, snapping his five game winning streak in the process. In six innings of the Cardinals' 6-5 loss, he struck out three while walking one.

Our View: Pineiro has a 4.56 ERA since the beginning of August (seven starts), but has managed to go 5-0 in that span. He will continue to be a good, but not an elite, play down the stretch.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 9/1, 10:46 PM CT
Joel Pineiro earned his 14th victory of the season with a 7-6 win over the Brewers Tuesday. He allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk over seven inning, but all the damage was done by rookie Casey McGehee. The rest of the lineup he held in check.

Our View: Pineiro now has an eight-game winning streak and the Cardinals have won each of his last 11 starts. He has been a godsend for the Redbirds this season and is as good or better than any third starter in the game. He's deceptively waiting to strike behind co-aces Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 8/26, 10:06 PM CT
Joel Pineiro pitched eight stifling innings of two-run ball on Wednesday, improving to 13-9, as the Cardinals beat the Astros 3-2.

Our View: Pineiro also has a sparkling 1.10 WHIP and 3.11 ERA to go with his 13 wins, and has shown no signs of slowing down as the season has progressed. Along with Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright, he is part of the best trio of starting pitchers on one team in the big leagues.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 8/20, 11:56 PM CT
Joel Pineiro was his usual dominant self on Thursday night, limiting the Padres to just one run and four hits in 7.2 innings, as the Cardinals won 5-1 in San Diego.

Our View: He also matched his season high in strikeouts, fanning seven. He has won six straight decisions since starting the year 6-9.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 8/15, 10:16 PM CT
Joel Pineiro gave up three earned runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings in Saturday's 7-4 win over San Diego at Busch Stadium. He had one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View: Pineiro did not have a strong outing, but the Cardinals provided enough run support for him to collect his 11th win. He is 5-0 over his last eight starts, and should remain active in fantasy leagues.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 8/9, 3:33 PM CT
Joel Pineiro toughed out seven innings on Sunday, allowing three early runs to the Pirates, to earn his tenth win of the season. The Birds on Bat won 7-3 in Pittsburgh.

Our View: Pineiro has looked more human in his recent starts than he did for much of June and July, but is still sinker-balling teams to death, and sporting a 1.12 WHIP and 3.22 ERA.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 8/4, 10:55 PM CT
Joel Pineiro struggled mightily on Tuesday, but the Cardinals' offense bailed him out as they defeated the Mets 12-7 in ten innings. Pineiro went five innings and allowed seven runs on 11 hits while not walking or striking out a batter.

Our View: Pineiro had been rolling as of late, but the sinker just wasn't working tonight. The Cards managed to bail him out, but fantasy owners can expect a much better performance next time out.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 7/30, 12:19 AM CT
Joel Pineiro pitched eight sharp innings on Wednesday, but took a no-decision as the Dodgers and Cardinals needed six extra frames for St. Louis to squeeze out a 3-2 win.

Our View: Pineiro's ERA is now a sparkling 2.84, while his WHIP is among the best in baseball at 1.07. His 9-9 record is not indicative of just how well he has pitched this season.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 7/24, 10:00 PM CT
Joel Pineiro only issued four hits over six scoreless innings in Friday's 8-1 win at Philadelphia. He had one walk with three strikeouts.

Our View: Pineiro enjoyed a strong performance, and evened his record to 9-9. He has earned a win in three straight starts.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 7/19, 6:36 PM CT
Joel Pineiro was solid again on Sunday in the Cardinals' 2-1 win over the Diamondbacks. Pineiro went seven innings and allowed one run on five hits while not walking a batter and striking out three. He also managed to drive in both of the Cardinals' runs.

Our View: Pineiro had the sinker working on Sunday, and when that pitch is on he is tough to beat. He is not a big strikeout guy, but his 3.09 ERA is more than respectable. Pineiro is not immune to the occasion bad start, but overall he has been very good this season.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 7/9, 4:03 PM CT
Joel Pineiro was in control from the hill in Thursday's 5-1 win at Milwaukee, as he only issued one earned run on three hits over nine innings. He had no walks and fired five strikeouts.

Our View: Pineiro collected his third complete game and shutout of the season, and trimmed his ERA to 3.20. Keep him active in fantasy leagues.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 6/28, 7:13 PM CT
Joel Pineiro struggled a bit on Sunday as his Cardinals fell to the Twins 6-2. Pineiro went 6.2 innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out two. He is now 6-9 on the year.

Our View: After a masterful start against the Mets earlier this week, Pineiro wasn't nearly as effective today. His sinker just didn't have its usual bite today, and he was hit around because of it. He didn't get much help, as his defense had three errors on the infield, but he still just didn't have it today. Although his record isn't great, he has shown the ability to dominate, and he should be utilized in nearly all leagues at this point.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 6/23, 9:25 PM CT
Joel Pineiro was masterful on Tuesday, pitching a two-hit shutout as the Cardinals beat the Mets 3-0 in New York.

Our View: Pineiro has now thrown two shutouts this season, and has been a real bright spot for the Cardinals in 2009. He is just 6-8, but has a 3.40 ERA in 92.2 innings pitched, and has walked only 12 batters all season. If you are in a smaller league and he isn't owned yet, you should gobble him up while you still can.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 6/18, 10:14 PM CT
Joel Pineiro got hit hard early on Monday, surrendering four earned runs in the first inning, but settled down and pitched six scoreless frames afterwards. It wasn't enough, though, as the Cardinals fell 6-3 to the Tigers.

Our View: Pineiro also had to be carried off the field after recording the final out in the seventh. He was seen clutching his left leg after suffering an apparent cramp. Trainers were also called onto the field one batter prior after his left arm cramped up. Details are unknown at this time, but conditions were very hot in St. Louis tonight, so cramping is the most likely culprit. He should likely be fine for his next start.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 6/12, 9:27 PM CT
Joel Pineiro gave up three earned runs on seven hits over 6.1 innings in Friday's 7-3 loss at Cleveland. He had two walks and six strikeouts.

Our View: Pineiro falls to 5-7 for the season after going 4-0 in April. He has lost in four straight starts.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 6/5, 9:13 AM CT
After a successful bullpen session on Thursday, Cardinals' starter Joel Pineiro plans to make his next scheduled start on Sunday against the Rockies, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Pineiro reported no problems with his back after the bullpen session.

Our View: This is great news for the Cards, especially with the news that Kyle Lohse is headed to the DL. The team can ill-afford another starter to go down, but it looks like Pineiro is just fine. Fantasy owners should get him in for his start on Sunday, especially since it is against the lowly Rockies.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 6/4, 11:23 AM CT
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that Cardinals starter Joel Pineiro will throw a bullpen session on Thursday to determine whether or not he can make his next start.

Our View: Pineiro has been a surprise for the Cardinals this season, and even a decent fantasy option, going 5-5 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. However, even if he does take his next turn, he will likely be rusty and not a good candidate for your starting lineup.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 6/3, 7:51 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Joel Pineiro is confident that he will make his next start on Sunday. He experienced back spasms in his last start and Brad Thompson was preciously expected to pitch in his place on Sunday.

Our View: Pineiro had his shortest and worst outing of the season his last time out in San Francisco when he allowed four runs in four innings. On the season, he is 5-5 with a 3.86 ERA. However, he has just 25 strikeouts in 65.1 innings of work.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 6/1, 11:09 AM CT
Joel Pineiro is expected to miss his next turn in the Cardinals' rotation due to back spasms, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The condition began Saturday and lasted into Sunday. He is not expected to end up on the DL.

Our View: Pineiro is only expected to miss one start, but you never know when it comes to back spasms. Expect him to be fine, but he will not pitch this week. Pineiro is still a solid option in all leagues when healthy.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 5/24, 4:00 PM CT
Joel Pineiro was pretty impressive on Sunday but he took the loss as the Cardinals fell to the Royals 3-2. Pineiro went seven innings and allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out three. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Our View: Pineiro was pretty good today, but his ran into some tough luck. After starting the season on fire, he looked to have come back to Earth in early May. His last two starts, however, have been very good. He should be owned in all leagues at this point.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 5/19, 11:05 PM CT
Joel Pineiro pitched out of his mind on Tuesday, tossing a three-hit shutout of the rival Chicago Cubs. The Cardinal hurler did not walk a man, struck out five and earned his fifth victory in a 3-0 Cardinal win.

Our View: The Cardinals desperately needed a win and the fact that their fifth starter became the stopper is a huge boost. Pineiro struggled after a very impressive start, but looks back on track now. The shutout (his first since 2003) dropped his ERA to 3.48 and he is worth a look in NL-only leagues and possibly even mixed leagues.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 5/13, 9:11 PM CT
Joel Pineiro struggled for the third straight time on Wednesday, as he and the Cardinals were defeated by the Pirates. Pineiro went six innings and allowed five runs on eleven hits.

Our View: After coming out blazing, Pineiro has not been good in May. His fantasy value is rapidly decreasing, but if the Cardinals can turn things around he could still pick up some wins. He is a risky play in any league at this point, but it may be wise not to give up on him yet.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 5/2, 2:35 PM CT
Joel Pineiro took his first loss of the season on Sunday. He allowed seven hits and four runs (one earned) over seven innings against the Nationals. Pineiro walked one and struck out four.

Our View: We would have like a win, but since only one run was earned, fantasy owners will surely take it. Pineiro is off to a strong start through five outings. History suggests the league will catch up with him soon.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 4/27, 9:30 PM CT
Joel Pineiro picked up his fourth win of the season as he used 76 pitches to get through 6.2 innings of work against the Braves on Monday. He allowed two runs on seven hits and had just one strikeout in the 3-2 win.

Our View: Pineiro seems to have bought completely into the Dave Duncan style of pitching. He is no longer concerned with strikeouts and is relying almost entirely on his sinker and the defense behind him. So far it appears to be working but his fantasy value is limited because of his poor strikeout rate and mediocre WHIP.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 4/22, 9:44 PM CT
Joel Pineiro threw a strong eight innings as the Cardinals beat the Mets 5-2 on Wednesday. He allowed six hits, two walks, and two runs, but did not record a single strike out.

Our View: Pineiro relied on his defense tonight as he used just 91 pitches to get 24 outs. He also got two double play balls and he appears very focused in his contract year. He may be worth a look in NL-Only leagues, although he hasn't provided much fantasy value aside from wins to this point. As long as his sinker is going like it was tonight, he will be very tough to defeat.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 4/15, 6:12 PM CT
Joel Pineiro was far from sharp on Wednesday, but hung on long enough to get the win in the Cardinals' 12-7 drubbing of Arizona. He allowed nine hits, three walks and five runs over just five innings.

Our View: Thankfully for Pineiro the Cards' big bats showed up today. After a miserable performance, he still finds himself 2-0 on the season. This is the version of Pineiro we expected to see in 2009. The two-run, 6.2 inning performance in his first start may have been a fluke.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 4/11, 12:05 AM CT
Joel Pineiro had a surprisingly strong start against the Astros on Friday. He tossed 6.2 innings, allowing just two runs on eight hits. He earned his first win of the season as the Cards prevailed 5-3.

Our View: Pineiro was the low point of the Cards' rotation last season, but perhaps being snubbed by Puerto Rico in the WBC gave him a chip on his shoulder. Now he has a reason to prove people wrong. He's off to a good start.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 4/4, 8:13 PM CT
Joel Pineiro had another strong start as the Cardinals defeated Triple-A Memphis 7-3 on Saturday. He allowed three hits, two walks, and two earned runs while striking out six over seven innings of work.

Our View: Pineiro has been among the better pitchers for the Cards this spring, and he could make a fantasy impact this season as a deep sleeoper. At this point, it's probably better to take a wait and see approach.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 3/30, 4:19 PM CT
Joel Pineiro threw six shutout innings as the Cardinals defeated the Marlins 2-1 on Monday. He allowed three hits and a walk, while striking out five.

Our View: Pineiro is having a strong spring thus far. He has 20 strikeouts against just four walks in 24 innings and he currently boasts a 1.44 ERA. He's entering a contract year and pitching with a chip on his shoulder after being bypassed for Puerto Rico's team in the WBC. He's a deep sleeper that is worth a look in NL-only leagues.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 3/25, 3:13 PM CT
Joel Pineiro allowed two earned runs on six hits over five innings in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Astros, with one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View: Pineiro had a decent outing, and holds a 1.89 ERA in spring action. Pineiro, the Cardinals' No. 5 starter in the rotation, is worth a look in NL-only leagues.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 3/7, 2:59 PM CT
Joel Pineiro allowed only one hit over four innings of work as the Cardinals beat the Astros 5-1 on Saturday. He struck out three hitters and walked none.

Our View: This was an excellent outing for Pineiro who is pitching with a chip on his shoulder this spring. The fifth starter was upset when Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo did not select him to pitch for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. He did not perform well last season and he battled shoulder stiffness and a sore groin. However, the 30-year-old will be pitching for a contract this season and a bounceback is possible.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 3/1, 4:28 PM CT
Joel Pineiro had a decent first outing on Sunday to begin his Grapefruit League season, going two innings while allowing one run on two hits and one walk. He also struck out two.

Our View: Pineiro is projected to be the Cardinals' fifth starter going into the 2009 season. If Chris Carpenter or another pitcher were to go down, it would almost certainly solidify his spot in the rotation.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 2/18, 9:16 AM CT
Joel Pineiro will not represent Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic as he was not asked to be part of their three-man rotation, according to MLB.com. He did not want to settle for a bullpen role and he stated, "Everybody knows that is not my role. I am very disappointed, very heartbroken. I felt disrespected."

Our View: Now Pineiro can concentrate on building up as a starter with the Cardinals in spring training. He could improve this season while working at the back of the rotation, but still isn't expected to be solid source for strikeouts or wins.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 2/14, 8:29 AM CT
Joel Pineiro wants to represent Puerto Rico in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Cardinals' skipper Tony LaRussa said, "I think the guy wants to pitch for his country, which I respect. He is going to have an important responsibility with our club so there is a decision. The first issue is if he is on the team or not."

Our View: Pitching coach Dave Duncan expects to see improvement from Pineiro, but competing in the WBC will compromise his spring training. He is expected to hold a spot at the back of the Cardinals' rotation, but isn't going to be a solid source for strikeouts or likely wins.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 2/4, 7:33 AM CT
Pitching coach Dave Duncan noted that the Cardinals are expecting more from Joel Pineiro this season after he struggled in 2008 with a 5.15 ERA and 1.45 WHIP, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Pineiro feels bad about his performance last season and will be playing for a new contract in 2009. He is also in much better shape right now, and could be worth a look in deeper NL-only leagues.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 9/25, 4:46 PM CT
Thursday saw Joel Pineiro win his first game since August 16th. The Diamondbacks were his victim this day. He lasted seven innings, allowed three hits, two walks, seven strikeouts and three runs. Of note, is that he struck out Mark Reynolds for the 200th time this season.

Our View: Pineiro finishes the season with a 7-7 record which is not reflective of his 25 starts. His ERA for 2008 is 5.15.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 9/22, 7:39 AM CT
Joel Pineiro pitched Saturday and has left the team to rejoin his family in Miami, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. His wife delivered twins Friday.

Our View: He should return for his next scheduled start, but should only be considered for deeper NL-only leagues with a 5.21 ERA and 1.48 WHIP. He is winless over his last four starts.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 9/20, 5:50 PM CT
Joel Pineiro allowed three earned runs on six hits over six innings in Saturday's 5-4 loss to the Cubs, with two walks and three strikeouts.

Our View: Pineiro falls to 6-7, and is winless over his last four starts.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 9/19, 6:25 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Joel Pineiro is still expected to start on Saturday at Wrigley Field despite flying home to Florida on Thursday morning for the birth of his twins.

Our View: Nobody was happy with Pineiro's last outing, except perhaps the Pirates. He alternated outstanding innings with shaky ones, throwing just enough good pitches to make it that much more maddening when he got knocked around. Once again he'll be pitching on an unconventional schedule, this time going on seven days' rest. It will be his third start in 35 days.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 9/19, 7:50 AM CT
Joel Pineiro left the Cardinals Thursday morning to return to his Florida home for his wife's delivery of twins, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Manager Tony LaRussa may need to adjust the rotation for the weekend series against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Brad Thompson is likely to make a spot start Saturday if Pineiro is not in town.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 9/14, 1:26 PM CT
MLB.com reports Pineiro is available to pitch out of the bullpen on Sunday with the Cardinals short pitchers after Saturday's extra inning game.

Our View: Fantasy owners that still have him in their lineup probably hope that he is not utilized after his recent performance.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 9/12, 9:30 PM CT
The struggles continued for Joel Pineiro against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. After completing just four innings, he had given up seven runs on eight hits.

Our View: Pineiro now has a 6.75 ERA in nine appearances since the All-Star break.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 9/5, 8:00 PM CT
Joel Pineiro will will move to the bullpen, as the Cardinals shift to a four-man rotation over the next week according to MLB.com. Pineiro, who last started on Monday in Arizona, will not start again until Sept. 12, the opener of the Cards' series against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Our View: That will make one start in 26 days for Pineiro, who was bumped to the 'pen when the Cards went to a four-man rotation in the second half of August. A run of off-days in the second half has allowed for some creativity with the starting five.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 8/26, 8:25 PM CT
Joel Pineiro will return to the Cardinals rotation next Monday after making one relief appearance, according to MLB.com. He was bumped to the bullpen because Adam Wainwright returned and the team had numerous days off.

Our View: Pineiro could be headed back to the bullpen eventually if Chris Carpenter comes back, but his status is up in the air.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 8/11, 9:47 PM CT
Joel Pineiro hurled seven solid innings on Monday night against the Marlins to even his record at 5-5. Pineiro allowed two runs, one earned, while striking out four and walking two.

Our View: Kyle McClellan came into the fire in the eighth inning and saved both Pineiro and the Cardinals bacon on this night. Pineiro lowered his ERA to 4.82 with this effort but he is still nothing more than a spot starter at best.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 7/31, 9:03 PM CT
Joel Pineiro saw his record drop to 3-5 as he allowed six earned runs on ten hits in six innings of work in St. Louis' 9-4 loss to Atlanta.

Our View: Pineiro's ERA jumped to 5.04, and once again he blew a lead that was handed to him. He should not be on fantasy rosters.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 7/8, 8:33 PM CT
Joel Pineiro recorded his first win since April 29th against the Phillies on Tuesday. He went 6.1 shoutout innings, allowing five hits and three walks. He struck out three.

Our View: Again, he didn't get much run support but he didn't need it. Anytime a starter shuts out the Phillies in Philly, it is impressive. With a number of Cardinal starters eyeing returns, look for the current rotation to step up its focus once again.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 6/22, 6:27 PM CT
Joel Pineiro held the Red Sox in check on Sunday allowing just two hits over seven innings to lower his ERA to 3.86. Pineiro didn't walk a batter though he did produce only a one K.

Our View: Despite all the injuries, the Cardinals continue to run out a bunch of average pitchers who are producing above average numbers. Since returning from the DL, Pineiero has allowed just five runs in three starts (2.37 ERA).
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 6/12, 9:22 PM CT
Making his first start since May 20th, Joel Pineiro held the Reds to two runs over five innings to pick up a no-decision. Pineiro struck out six and only walked one while needing just 69 pitches in the outing.

Our View: The Cardinals desperately need some good news, and tonight it came in the form of the right arm of Pineiro who showed no ill effects from the groin injury that sidelined him.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 6/12, 3:14 PM CT
Joel Pineiro has been activated from the DL, according to the AP. He has recovered from a strained right groin. Albert Pujols was placed on the DL as well.

Our View: He will return to the Cardinals' rotation tonight against the Reds. He is 2-3 with a 4.50 ERA and passable 1.36 WHIP this season. It would be best to wait to see how he responds in his first start back before considering him for your lineup, specifically for NL-only leagues.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 6/10, 6:26 PM CT
The Cardinals report they will activate RHP Joel Pineiro from the 15-day disabled list later this week and will give him the start on Thursday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Pineiro has been on the DL since May 21st with a strained right groin, but after a successful bullpen session today, the Cards are ready to get him back on the mound. Pineiro has missed 17 games since going onto the DL. He is 2-3 through eight starts with a 4.50 ERA. He'll go up against the Reds' Bronson Arroyo in the series finale with Cincinnati.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 6/9, 7:45 PM CT
Joel Pineiro will be activated from the DL sometime this week, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The right-hander has been out with a right groin strain.

Our View: Pineiro will likely start on Thursday in place of Adam Wainwright.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 6/2, 9:30 AM CT
Joel Pineiro isn't likely to return from the DL when eligible on Thursday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. His right groin strain has been slow to heal, and Manager Tony LaRussa said, "I don't think Joel will be ready in time for Thursday, but we'll see."

Our View: Rookie Mike Parisi could make another start Thursday if Pineiro is not ready. LaRussa also mentioned that he wouldn't rule out calling up Anthony Reyes from Memphis for the start.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 5/31, 7:28 PM CT
Joel Pineiro was not able to pitch in Saturday's scheduled bullpen session, according to MLB.com. Pineiro attempted to throw off the mound before today's game against the Pirates to see what kind of progress he has made, but his injured right groin hurt too much, and he was forced to cancel his session. Pineiro received further treatment for his ailment instead.

Our View: It is uncertain how long Pineiro will miss now following today's setback in his recovery from a right groin strain. He was placed on the 15-day DL on Wednesday, retroactive to May 21.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 5/28, 1:40 PM CT
The Cardinals placed Joel Pineiro on the 15-day DL on Wednesday and promoted Kelvin Jimenez from Triple-A, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch confirms. Pineiro has been dealing with a strained groin since his start on May 21. He could return next week.

Our View: The Cardinals may need only one spot start from Mike Parisi before Pineiro returns, so there's not much for NL-only fantasy owners to do here.

Joel Pineiro was supposed to start tonight's game but was pushed back until Saturday because of a sore groin. Now the right-hander is questionable for his re-scheduled start this weekend, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Pineiro met with a team doctor Tuesday morning and was diagnosed with a mild strain of his right groin. He first injured the area while shagging fly balls in the outfield during the road trip.

Our View: Pineiro was scheduled to play catch Tuesday but instead just iced his groin. He conceded that he would be unable to throw off a mound Tuesday with how the groin felt. We should know later in the week whether he's good enough to go. Mike Parisi would be an option to fill in for Pineiro, or if the team decides to call someone up, Anthony Reyes is the obvious candidate.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 5/25, 8:46 AM CT
The Cardinals are going to skip Joel Pineiro's next start, according to MLB.com. The team will be moving the other four starters up a day thanks to Monday's off-day, and Manager Tony LaRussa commented that Pineiro is dealing with some discomfort in his groin. Braden Looper will pitch on Tuesday at home against Houston, followed by Adam Wainwright, Kyle Lohse and Todd Wellemeyer. Pineiro will return to the rotation on May 31 at home against Pittsburgh. LaRussa added, "Pineiro's groin is barking a little bit. So I think we're going to take advantage of that. We're going to hold Pineiro till a spot opens, which will be over the weekend."

Our View: Pineiro is not pitching well right now, and holds a 4.50 ERA with a passable 1.36 WHIP. He only has 23 strikeouts over 44 innings, and he has failed to reach the sixth inning in either of his last two starts.
Joel Pineiro, P, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 5/23, 7:28 AM CT
Manager Tony La Russa isn't pleased that Joel Pineiro has fallen short of six innings in two straight starts. "I think part of it is for him to really examine his outings. He's shown he's good enough," La Russa tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "He just needs to examine what he's doing right and where he can get better."

Our View: Pineiro is having a bit of a rough month (5.40 ERA), and La Russa has a right to be picky when the Cardinals have other starting pitchers coming down the pipeline. Joel's job isn't in jeopardy, at least not for now.

Our View: Those three runs came of the bat of 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff, going deep with two on in the sixth inning.

The Cardinals had one of the league's best rotations, until Sunday. Joel Pineiro made his return from shoulder inflammation and proceeded to serve up 10 hits and six runs over 3.2 innings against the Giants.
