Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsSaturday 9/12, 10:51 AM CT
The New York Daily News is reporting that catcher Brian Schneider will not be back for the Mets next season. Schneider has missed time with injury this season, and he has recently lost playing time to Omir Santos and Josh Thole.

Our View: Schneider hasn't been much of a factor for the Mets this season, and he knows there is no chance the team brings him back in 2010. Santos has been decent behind the plate this season, and everyone in New York is high on Thole. Schneider will find another job next season, but he will still be fantasy irrelevant.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsSunday 6/21, 5:45 PM CT
Brian Schneider was productive in Sunday's 10-6 loss to the Rays at Citi Field, as he went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer off Joe Nelson.

Our View: Schneider is riding a five-game hitting streak, with two homers and eight RBI over the span. Keep him active in fantasy leagues while he is swinging a hot stick.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsFriday 6/19, 10:50 PM CT
Brian Schneider led the Mets offensively in Friday's 5-3 win over the Rays at Citi Field, as he went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer off Andy Sonnanstine.

Our View: Schneider collected his first homer of the season, and has five RBI over his last three games. He is hitting .320 so far in June as well.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsSaturday 5/30, 12:28 PM CT
As expected, catcher Brian Schneider has been activated from the DL and is back in the starting lineup on Saturday, according to the AP. He has been out since April 15 with a muscle strain in his back.

Our View: Schneider figures to start most games against right handed starters. He is a career .252 hitter, does not offer much pop and no speed.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsFriday 5/29, 6:16 PM CT
According to New York Post, Mets' catcher Brian Schneider will return to the lineup on Saturday.

Our View: Manager Jerry Manuel stated that Schneider will see a lot of playing time once he returns, which means that either Omir Santos or Ramon Castro will be looking for work. The Mets have already said that they are actively shopping Castro, but until they can unload him someone will be sent down. The team likely won't carry three catchers.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsTuesday 5/26, 7:51 PM CT
According to the New York Daily News, catcher Brian Schneider is ready to return to the Mets, but the team has yet to make a move.

Our View: Schneider's back is apparently good to go, but the team hasn't figured out what to do with Ramon Castro and surging catcher Omir Santos. The team seems done with Castro, but he is owed $2.5 million and the Mets are hamstrung. He still seems to be the obvious odd man out.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsSunday 5/24, 8:30 AM CT
The New York Daily News is reporting that Brian Schneider could return to the Mets at some point in the coming week.

Our View: When Schneider comes back, the Mets will have a decision to make on who they will send down. Omir Santos has been playing very well, so it may be Ramon Castro who makes the trip back to Triple-A.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsTuesday 5/12, 10:11 AM CT
Metsblog.com is reporting that Brian Schneider was scratched from his start in extended spring training on Monday. There is no timetable set for his return.

Our View: The Mets don't seem to be in much of a hurry to get Schneider back, so he will probably take the rehab very slowly. Omir Santos has the catching job on lockdown in New York right now, so Schneider's fantasy value will be slim even when he does come back.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsSaturday 5/2, 8:38 AM CT
Catcher Brian Schneider has had a setback with his right calf and will stay on the disabled list for several more days, the New York Post reports. Schneider is technically on the DL due to back issues, but he also has calf problems. He was eligible to return on Friday.

Our View: The Mets seem to have fallen in love with Omir Santos, who is hitting .286, and we can't help but wonder if this is a smokescreen to delay their decision.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsSunday 4/26, 1:02 PM CT
The Mets believe catcher Brian Schneider (back) will be ready to come off the disabled list when he is eligible to return on Friday, the Newark Star-Ledger reports. The veteran has been dealing with calf issues as well as the strained muscle in his back.

Our View: We expect Schneider to regain his starting role, but the Mets seem to like Omir Santos, who came up in his place. The team's future at catcher is very much up in the air.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsFriday 4/17, 6:47 PM CT
The Mets have placed catcher Brian Schneider on the 15-day disabled list due to a muscle strain his back, the New York Daily News reports.

Our View: Ramon Castro should start nearly every day while Scheider is out, and Castro will be a decent fantasy option during that time. Omir Santos has been called up to serve as the top backup.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsFriday 4/17, 9:44 AM CT
Brian Schneider is expected to miss tonight's game against Milwaukee due to back stiffness and a leg strain, according to MetsBlog.com.

Our View: Ramon Castro will replace him behind the plate. Schneider is considered day-to-day, and should be held out of fantasy lineups until further notice.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsThursday 4/16, 7:42 PM CT
Brian Schneider was given the day off against San Diego on Thursday with back stiffness and a leg strain, according to the New York Post.

Our View: Schneider is listed as day-to-day at the moment. Ramon Castro will play in Schneider's absence, though neither makes for an attractive fantasy option.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsTuesday 3/24, 9:30 PM CT
Catcher Brian Schneider (knee) is expected to return to the lineup on Wednesday, MLB.com reports. He caught Johan Santana's bullpen session on Tuesday and says his right knee is no longer an issue.

Our View: When healthy Schneider should get four or five starts every weeks for the Mets this season. We don't see much upside beyond his 2008 numbers, though.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsFriday 3/20, 12:05 PM CT
Brian Schneider is still feeling some soreness behind his right knee, but believes he will be able to play on Sunday, according to Newsday. He is dealing with a strained PCL and left calf.

Our View: The club must feel confident that Schneider will be fine, as they re-assigned Robinson Cancel. Schneider is worth a look for NL-only leagues as a reserve.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsThursday 3/19, 1:09 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Brian Schneider is feeling better while dealing with a PCL strain in his right knee and a strained right calf, according to MLB.com.

Our View: He returned to camp today, and was in less pain. Schneider has started anti-inflammatory treatment and doesn't expect to miss significant time, but is yet to be given a prognosis.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsThursday 3/19, 8:18 AM CT
Brian Schneider is out of action indefinitely while nursing a PCL strain in his right knee and a strained right calf, according to the NY Post.

Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsMonday 12/8, 7:22 PM CT
The Boston Red Sox are interested in Mets catcher Brian Schneider, according to the Washington Post.

Our View: Schneider is due nearly $5 million this season, so it would decrease the likelihood of Jason Varitek going back to Boston should they acquire Schneider.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsFriday 11/21, 4:27 PM CT
The Mets are reportedly willing to deal Brian Schneider or Ramon Castro, according to Sports Illustrated.

Our View: Near the end of October the Mets discussed dealing for Bengie Molina. Jason Varitek is believed to be a possibility for the Mets as well if they deal one of their catchers.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsFriday 9/26, 4:24 PM CT
Brian Schneider has been dealing with back tightness, but plans on being in Friday's lineup at catcher, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View: He is not 100 percent but the pain has decreased to the point he feels he can play. He is hitless over his last five games (10 at-bats) and should be left on the bench in fantasy leagues.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsThursday 9/25, 5:13 PM CT
The Daily News reports that Robinson Cancel will replace Brian Schneider at catcher on Thursday night do to an apparent back issue for Schneider.

Our View: No word yet on how serious the back issue is but it has not been reported as a serious ailment.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsSaturday 9/13, 9:28 AM CT
Brian Schneider expects to play today despite bursitis in his left knee, according to the NY Post.

Our View: Schneider said the knee hurts when he blocks balls behind the plate, but it shouldn't affect him at the plate.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsFriday 9/12, 4:23 PM CT
Brian Schneider has been scratched from Friday night's lineup with an apparent knee infection according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: Earlier in the day, manager Jerry Manuel announced Schneider would handle the majority of the catching duties the rest of the way. This, obviously, will keep Ramon Castro in the lineup for at least one more night.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsFriday 9/12, 9:07 AM CT
Manager Jerry Manuel has decided that Brian Schneider will get the majority of the work at catcher for the rest of the season, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View: Ramon Castro is nearing his return from the DL, but Manuel wants Schneider, namely as he performed favorably against left-handed pitching. Schneider still remains a marginal fantasy catcher.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsFriday 8/22, 8:59 PM CT
Catcher Brian Schneider is not known for his offensive prowess, but he provided Johan Santana with a two-run home run, giving the lefty all he needed in the Mets 3-0 win over Houston.

Our View: Nice game for Schneider, but he should not be on fantasy rosters, in part due to his numbers, but also because he sees inconsistent playing time.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsSunday 8/17, 5:26 PM CT
Staff ace Johan Santana provided all the baseball the Mets needed for the win, but catcher Brian Schneider was the bat of reckoning in the 4-0 win over Pittsburgh. Schneider went 2-for-3 at the dish with one walk and his fourth home run of the season, totaling three RBIs and one run scored.

Our View: Schneider is hitting .333 through the month of August, though he has just two homers for five RBIs along the way.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsWednesday 6/25, 9:56 AM CT
Brian Schneider returned to action on Tuesday from a bruised hand. He went 3-for-4 in his return.

Our View: Schneider is a good bet when the Mets are facing righties. He's known as a streaky hitter, so this could be the start of a hot streak.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsMonday 6/23, 9:33 AM CT
Brian Schneider is expected to rest for a few more days to nurse his bruised left hand, according to the NY Post.

Our View: Ramon Castro should handle the catching duties while he rests. Schneider could return on Tuesday, at the earliest.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsSunday 6/22, 2:05 PM CT
Mets catcher Brian Schneider spoke with reporters and states he is feeling fine the day after leaving Saturday's game with swelling in his left hand, according to MLB.com.

Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsSaturday 6/21, 11:51 PM CT
X-rays on Brian Schneider's injured left pinkie finger came back negative, according to MLB.com. The Mets are listing him as day-to-day. The injury occurred on the same finger that kept Schneider out of action for nearly two weeks in April, when he suffered an infection.

Our View: This is good news for the Mets... we guess.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsSaturday 6/21, 10:48 PM CT

Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsTuesday 6/3, 6:42 PM CT

Our View: He will be replaced by Ramon Castro, batting eighth in the order.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsThursday 5/29, 8:39 PM CT
Brian Schneider is the Mets starting catcher and there will be no catching platoon in New York if you ask Mets manager Willie Randolph, according to MLB.com. "That could eventually happen," Randolph said. "But I'm not ready to do that yet because I think that Brian, when he catches, is more of an asset to us than worrying about his offense. We like what he does behind the plate, and that, to me, is first and foremost on our team."

Our View: Ramon Castro is 6-for-18 so far on the year, and Schneider has struggled in May hitting .207 after a .333 April. Still, Brian's .257 average is right on par with his career mark (.253), so it's not as if he has underperformed at the plate. He is what he is, and that is no more than a starter in deep NL only leagues or a bottom tier #2 option in leagues that start two backstops.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsWednesday 5/14, 9:31 PM CT
The Mets managed to post just six hits on the evening with no player earning more than one, falling 5-3 to the Washington Nationals. Catcher Brian Schneider was the man of note from the New York offense, going 1-of-4 with his second home run of the season to total two RBIs.

Our View: Schneider has been gaining momentum this month, going 10-of-30 with two home runs thus far.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsTuesday 5/13, 9:28 PM CT
Brian Schneider had a three hit night on Tuesday to push his average up to .321.

Our View: Schneider, out of the lineup of late due to a mysterious infection, is hitting at a fairly high rate for a guy who hasn't hit .260 since 2005. Beware of a regression here, though he should be a solid second catcher moving forward.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsWednesday 5/7, 2:02 PM CT
Brian Schneider is getting the day off as the Mets try to snap a two-game skid against LA and Brad Penny.

Our View: Casanova is starting behind the plate and hitting eighth in the batting order.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsSunday 5/4, 9:06 AM CT
Brian Schneider stated that he is likely to return to his starting post at catcher on Monday against the Dodgers, according to MetsBlog. Schneider spent six days in the hospital last week with a staph infection in his left thumb. He is still experiencing pain in this finger, but he caught a bullpen session on Friday and has been available the last few days as a back-up catcher.

Our View: Schneider seems to have healed up fine, and is seemingly safe to return to your lineups for the week. He was hitting a solid .309 over 16 games, with eight RBI before going down.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsFriday 5/2, 11:59 AM CT
Brian Schneider won't start Friday, but he is ready to serve as a backup, according to the NY Daily News. Schneider hasn't played since April 23 because of a thumb injury.

Our View: The Mets will try their best not to use Schneider over the next few days, but it sounds like the catcher is just about healed up.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsFriday 5/2, 7:54 AM CT
The Mets hope they don't have to DL Brian Schneider when they activate Moises Alou on Friday, instead preferring to send out Gustavo Molina, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View: Schneider hasn't played since April 23 and would have to stay on the DL for just six days. We'll let you know what the Mets end up doing.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsWednesday 4/30, 2:00 PM CT
Brian Schneider will not play in this weekend's series against Arizona, according to The New York Times. Schneider said he will return when his thumb, which swelled to twice its normal size, can withstand the pounding of catching. He added that he does not feel comfortable serving even in an emergency situation, which means that the Mets will continue to hold three catchers on the active roster.

Our View: The other two catchers are Gustavo Molina and Raul Casanova. Molina was believed to be the player that would be sent down to activate outfielder Moises Alou from the DL. The Mets could also decide to backdate a potential DL stay for Schneider (he’s already been out a week) to create roster space for Alou.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsWednesday 4/30, 11:11 AM CT
Brian Schneider has been released from the hospital, according to the NY Daily News. He has been in the hospital since Thursday due to an infected left thumb, and returned to the team clubhouse today with his thumb wrapped.

Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsThursday 4/24, 8:57 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Brian Schneider has been hospitalized due to an infection his left thumb, according to MLB.com. The team does not believe that Schneider will need to go on the DL, but they purchased the contract of catcher Gustavo Molina while designating outfielder Brady Clark for assignment.

Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsWednesday 4/23, 10:43 AM CT
Brian Schneider expects to return to his post at catcher tonight against the Nationals, according to the NY Daily News. He has been out since taking a foul ball off his right forearm on Saturday.

Our View: His return would send Raul Casanova back to the bench. Schneider was hitting .308 over 52 at-bats, with seven RBI before getting hurt, and his fantasy stock should go back up.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsTuesday 4/22, 1:33 PM CT
Brian Schneider is sitting out today in favor of Raul Casanova at catcher, according to the NY Daily News. Casanova gets the call against Cubs' lefty Ted Lilly.

Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsMonday 4/21, 8:57 AM CT
Brian Schneider did not play on Sunday due to a bruised right forearm, and he is day-to-day. "He's just still sore," manager Willie Randolph tells the Newark Star-Ledger. "The x-rays were negative, so we'll just take it day-to-day and see how he's feeling (on Monday)." Schneider took a foul ball off his forearm on Saturday.

Our View: Fantasy owners can expect Schneider to be back within the next day or two.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsSunday 4/20, 8:55 AM CT

His fingers were numb and he had significant swelling on the injured area, but no bones were broken. He said, "It's just a lot of pain. It doesn't have a lot of grip right now. It's iced down now, so it's numb. I don't know what the pitch was - 96, 97 mph. It came straight down on me." The team did not comment how long he may be out of action.

Our View: Raul Casanova will likely start on Sunday in his place.
Brian Schneider, C, New York MetsSunday 4/13, 4:23 PM CT
Brian Schneider collected three singles and drove in three runs in Sunday's loss to the Brewers. He is up to six RBI on the season.

He wasn't too inspiring at the plate, failing to get a ball out of the infield (though his two hits to 2B were solid), but Schneider reports all running and fielding work were accomplished free of pain. "Even when I ran today, everything felt good," Schneider said. "I didn't feel it one bit -- not a twinge, nothing. It was a good day in that respect." Schneider is expected to work with a rotation that may carry the fate of the Mets in '08 and was acquired for his defensive skills behind the plate. Getting him in action and working behind home without issue is a great sign as Opening Day approaches.

Santana pitched well and Schneider had this to say after the game, "I talked to him before the game and wanted him to shake me off as much as possible and make sure he threw his kind of game. I don't want him going out there and just throwing what fingers I put down. When I see how he throws, the different patterns, that's when I learn the most from him. We were on the same page a lot more than I thought we would be. He looked great."
