Claudio Vargas, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 12/18, 6:36 PM CT
Claudio Vargas has reached a one-year, $900,000 deal with the Brewers, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Our View: He can make an extra $400,000 if he reaches certain incentives. He will serve as a reliever, as well as possible occasional spot-starter, for the Brews in 2010.

Claudio Vargas will take a physical for the Brewers today after which, assuming he passes, he'll finalize a one-year deal with the ball club, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Tom Haudricourt.

Our View: Vargas looked great with a 1.74 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in a limited role last season and is in line to help in middle relief, and possibly see the occasional spot start, in 2010.

According to Adam McCalvy on Twitter, the Brewers are close to re-signing reliever Claudio Vargas.

Our View: The Brewers acquired Vargas last season to help bolster their rotation, but they are looking at him as a reliever in 2010. Last year he posted a 1.74 ERA and 0.97 in 40 innings and would be a valuable addition to the bullpen. The Brewers are just waiting on the approval from Vargas' agent.

According to ESPN.com's Amy K. Nelson, the Brewers have acquired pitcher Claudio Vargas from the Dodgers in exchange for catcher Vinny Rottino.

Our View: The Brewers desperately needed a starter with Dave Bush and Jeff Suppan on the DL, and Vargas was a cheap, available option. He worked out of the Dodgers' pen (1.64 ERA in eight games), but will join the Brewers' rotation.

According to Scout.com, Claudio Vargas will complete his Minor League rehab assignment on Friday and is expected to be added to the Dodgers' 25-man active roster.

Our View: Vargas has recovered from elbow tendinitis and looks to take pitcher Eric Stults' spot on the active roster. If he is not activated Vargas could declare free agency, so the Dodgers want to give him a shot before that happens. He will work long relief out of the bullpen.

Claudio Vargas has been placed on the 60-day DL by the Dodgers with right elbow tendinitis, according to TSN.

Our View: The 30-year-old vet did not pitch well in spring action, and is not worth holding outside of deeper NL-only leagues.

MLB.com reports that Claudio Vargas will begin the season on the DL with a sore elbow.

Our View: Vargas have been awful this spring, but the Dodgers could use an extra arm at this point. Regardless, he holds zero fantasy value.
Claudio Vargas, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 3/25, 6:54 PM CT
Claudio Vargas pitched an inning against the Brewers on Wednesday and allowed four hits, four runs, and two home runs in the Dodger's 12-8 loss.

Our View: Vargas has had a terrible spring, allowing 12 runs in just over 12 innings. He has been working with pitching coach Rick Honeycutt to improve his outings but to this point the problems continue.

Claudio Vargas pitched three innings against Kansas City on Friday night and allowed just one run on three hits. He also walked two and struck out three.

Our View: Vargas had allowed seven runs on 11 hits in his previous five and one-third innings, which led him to consult pitching coach Rick Honeycutt. Honeycutt told Vargas to stay back and finish off his pitches and apparently it worked.

The Dodgers have signed hurler Claudio Vargas to a one-year deal worth $400,000 with $1.4 million in incentives, according to the LA Times.

Our View: The 30-year-old pitcher held a solid 1.19 WHIP over 37 innings with the Mets in 2008, and could compete for a spot in the back of the Dodgers' rotation.
Claudio Vargas, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 6/24, 10:40 PM CT
The Mets designated Claudio Vargas for assignment after Tuesday's game. Vargas allowed four runs in two relief innings in tonight's contest. Carlos Muniz will replace him on the roster.

Our View: The Mets will be without a long man in their bullpen now. Vargas actually pitched pretty well for them before tonight.

Claudio Vargas wasn't pretty on Thursday but he held on long enough to pick up his second win of the season. Vargas allowed four runs over 5.2 innings as he allowed two home runs in the win.

Our View: Vargas has been about what the Mets expected when they brought him into the fold, and that is a solid 5th starter. He doesn't deserve a look unless you are in an NL Only league.
Claudio Vargas, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 5/13, 5:19 PM CT
Claudio Vargas was recalled to the Mets to take the roster spot of starter Nelson Figueroa and he will start on Wednesday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: With Figueroa out of the way, Vargas figures to be given every chance to take control of the Mets fifth starters spot, the role that the team envisioned for him when they signed him. He is worth picking up in NL Only leagues.

Claudio Vargas threw seven scoreless innings for Triple-A New Orleans, allowing only four hits and fanning seven on Thursday.

Our View: Nelson Figueroa was awful in his last start, but the Mets probably won’t replace him with Vargas just yet. With Pedro Martinez making his way back from the DL this month, it could be a moot point.

Claudio Vargas has signed with the Mets, according to MetsBlog.com. He has been signed to a minor-league deal, and will report to extended spring training in Port St. Lucie, before joining Triple-A New Orleans. Due to injuries to the Mets' rotation, Vargas will ultimately have a shot to start.

The Mets are the frontrunners to sign free-agent right-hander Claudio Vargas, this according to the New York Post. The Mets are expected to sign the right-hander to a minor-league contract, and a deal could be done as early as Thursday. Vargas' agent, Bean Stringfellow, told The Post today that the Mets have offered Vargas a Triple-A deal and are one of four teams in the hunt. Stringfellow confirmed, though, that the Mets are the favorite. Vargas and his agent want to sign with the team he's most likely to have a chance to start with. With injuries to the Mets rotation, Orlando Hernandez and Pedro Martinez, Vargas indeed has a shot at one of the open slots in the starting five.

The Mets have interest in bringing Claudio Vargas in as a replacement for the injured Pedro Martinez, but it appears that there might not be a fit. Bean Stringfellow, the agent for Vargas, indicated that GM Omar Minaya was not prepared to offer the right-hander a starting job in the immediate future. “Omar, to his credit, has been very upfront with me and I appreciate the Mets’ candor,” Stringfellow said to Newsday. “What I’m hearing from that situation, it just doesn’t jibe. I’m trying to get Claudio in the right situation, not a quick situation.” Vargas was released by the Brewers last month. He won't have trouble finding a job somewhere, but with El Duque due back soon, going to the Mets might not be the best move for him.
Claudio Vargas, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 3/26, 8:46 AM CT
The Mets are showing interest in Claudio Vargas, who was released by the Brewers on Tuesday. "That's a good name," general manager Omar Minaya tells the New York Post. "We're going to take a close look at him." Orlando Hernandez and Mike Pelfrey have failed to nail down the No. 5 spot in the rotation this spring.
Claudio Vargas, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 3/25, 2:01 PM CT
In a surprising move, the Brewers have released Claudio Vargas, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He was expected to make the staff but his release opens the door for two young pitchers, Manny Parra and Carlos Villanueva, to make the starting rotation, along with Ben Sheets, Jeff Suppan and Dave Bush. Manager Yost commented, "In our evaluations, Vargas was the seventh guy on our staff. We feel, in all fairness to him, we didn't see him pitching in Triple-A. We feel like he's a big-league pitcher."
Claudio Vargas, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 3/9, 9:18 PM CT
Claudio Vargas pitched five hitless innings, walking one and striking out two, to help Milwaukee beat the Seattle Mariners in a split-squad game. Vargas made a strong case to begin the season in the Brewers starting rotation with Sunday's performance. Vargas is battling David Bush, Chris Capuano and Jeff Suppan for the final two slots of the rotation. Vargas was 11-6 with one save and a 5.09 ERA in 23 starts and 29 total appearances last season.
Claudio Vargas, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 1/17, 10:36 AM CT
Claudio Vargas signed a one-year, $3.6 million deal with the Brewers Wednesday, avoiding arbitration. The righty, who won 11 games last year despite a 5.09 ERA and 1.54 WHIP, will compete for a rotation spot in the spring.
Claudio Vargas, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 9/9, 5:29 PM CT
The Brewers activated Claudio Vargas from the disabled list on Sunday. He had been out of action since Aug. 25 due to a strained lower back and will work out of the bullpen for now.
Claudio Vargas, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 8/28, 2:51 PM CT
As expected, Claudio Vargas was placed on the disabled list Tuesday with a strained lower back. The move is retroactive to August 25. It's possible Ben Sheets could return from the DL on Wednesday or Thursday to take Vargas' spot in the rotation, although the Brewers are still in need of another arm with Chris Capuano recently demoted to the bullpen.
Claudio Vargas, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 8/27, 8:49 AM CT
Claudio Vargas likely will be placed on the disabled list. He complained about a sore back following Friday's start and will be examined further on Monday to determine his status, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. We'll have to wait and see what the results are, but it doesn't sound promising.
