Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 3/4, 5:33 PM CT
Fernando Rodney is expected to get the green light to throw off a mound soon, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Rodney has been hindered by sore shins at the onset of spring training. He is feeling good again, and was being examined today. He is slated to serve as a setup man if healthy.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 2/22, 9:46 PM CT
Fernando Rodney is gearing up for his role as a setup man with the Angels for 2010, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Our View: The flamethrower will share the spot with Scot Shields and Kevin Jepsen, and could get some save opportunities when Brian Fuentes is down. He should prove to be a key piece of the Angels' pen, but his fantasy stock will take a hit after nailing down 37 saves in 38 chances as the Tigers' closer in 2009.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 12/23, 3:22 PM CT
The Angels have agreed upon a two-year, $11 million deal with Fernando Rodney, according to ESPN.com.

Our View: Rodney is scheduled to undergo a physical for the Angels later today, after which the signing will be announced. Rodney was solid in save situations last year, collecting 37 saves with just one blown opportunity, though his 4.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP were far from ideal. He'll serve as Brian Fuentes' setup man in Los Angeles and will surely be the first in line to close should anything happen to Fuentes.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 12/22, 1:23 PM CT
The Angels are in serious discussions with reliever Fernando Rodney, according to ESPN.com. He has been reportedly seeking a three-year, $30 million deal.

Our View: Rodney posted a 4.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP last season while closing 37 games. If he's not closing games, which is still Brian Fuentes' job, he's not of much value to fantasy teams.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 12/16, 4:48 PM CT
Fernando Rodney is believed to be the Orioles' top target among closers, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: The team is also looking at closers Matt Capps, Mike Gonzalez, Jose Valverde, and Kevin Gregg. The Mets are among the other teams interested in acquiring Rodney, who nailed down 37 saves for Detroit last season.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 12/14, 5:55 PM CT
The Mets, Orioles and Phillies are all interested in acquiring Fernando Rodney, according to Jorge Arangure's (ESPN) twitter page.

Our View: No deal appears to be imminent though. The 32-year-old reliever covets a three-year contract worth $30MM after nailing down 37 saves in 2009.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 12/13, 8:30 AM CT
Fernando Rodney, who rejected Detroit's arbitration offer, apparently is asking for three years and around $30 million, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Rodney showed the ability to close games last season by notching 37 saves, but his 4.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP were still far from ideal, and his ERA has been on the wrong side of 4.25 each of the past three seasons; basically, he's dreaming if he thinks he can get that type of money. We'll have to wait and see who eventually doles out the cash for him, but expect Rodney's asking price to come down.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 12/1, 5:40 PM CT
Fernando Rodney has been offered salary arbitration from the Tigers, according to MLBblogs.com.

Our View: The reliever covets a multi-year deal, and team GM Dave Dombrowski admitted that he would be very surprised if Rodney accepts arbitration. He is a Type B free agent.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 9/14, 2:25 PM CT
MLB.com is reporting that Tigers' manager Jim Leyland is hoping to give closer Fernando Rodney the night off on Monday. Rodney Rodney pitched the ninth inning on Sunday with his team up 7-2.

Our View: Rodney had already warmed up by the time the Tigers added three runs in the ninth, so Leyland went ahead and put him in the game. If the team has a save opportunity tonight, it will be interesting to see who Leyland uses, as he said he would like to give set-up man Brandon Lyon the night off as well.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 9/8, 11:16 AM CT
According to the Twitter page of baseball writer Ed Price, Tigers' closer Fernando Rodney has been suspended three games for throwing a ball into the press box after the team's September 4 game against the Rays.

Our View: The suspension is supposed to start today unless Rodney appeals, but he would be wise to serve it now, as it doesn't look like he will be getting out of this one. He has 32 saves and a 3.41 ERA this season, and he has developed into a very reliable fantasy closer. We will update you if he decides to appeal.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 7/8, 9:00 PM CT
Fernando Rodney picked up his 19th save of the season on Wednesday. He pitched a perfect ninth and struck out two in the Tigers' 3-1 win over the Royals.

Our View: Rodney is 0-2 this season with a 4.03 ERA, but is 19-for-19 in save opportunities. He's good with the game on the line, and even though his numbers aren't exactly what you want out of a reliever he's a great option for saves.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 6/25, 3:11 PM CT
Fernando Rodney notched his 16th save of the season on Thursday in the Tigers' 6-5 win over the Cubs. Rodney struck out the side in his one inning, but he also surrendered two hits and a run.

Our View: Rodney doesn't have the best ERA or strikeout total as the Tigers' closer, but for the most part he is getting the job done. He is a solid play as a closer in all leagues, so if for any reason he is available you should grab him.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 6/10, 7:02 PM CT
MLive.com reports that Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya will be unavailable for Wednesday night's contest against the White Sox after appearing in three consecutive games.

Our View: Rodney has been alright in the closer's role this season. He has just one loss against 11 saves, but he holds a 4.68 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. He also has just 19 strikeouts in 25 innings.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 4/27, 8:36 PM CT
Fernando Rodney gave up three hits and two earned runs, but was able to get the final three outs in Detroit's 4-2 win over the Yankees on Monday.

Our View: After a hot start to the season, Rodney has given up five earned runs in his last three innings of work. He has given up eight hits but not walked any in that span. He has also failed to get a strikeout and it appears his honeymoon period of being a top fantasy closer has quickly passed.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 4/26, 4:55 PM CT
Fernando Rodney earned his fourth save of the season on Sunday in the Tigers' 3-2 win over the Royals. He allowed a solo home run in the ninth, but eventually shut the door for a Tiger win.

Our View: Rodney hasn't been great this season, but is getting the job done. He'll need to step it up a bit though if he doesn't want to lose his job to Joel Zumaya who recently rejoined the team.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 4/11, 3:00 PM CT
Fernando Rodney was spotless Saturday for the second time in two outings so far, this time striking out the side in the ninth, all on swinging third strikes.

Our View: In theory, Rodney has one of the shakiest holds on a closer job in the league, but he is doing his best to dispel that notion.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 4/8, 8:45 PM CT
Fernando Rodney threw a perfect ninth inning as the Tigers beat the Blue Jays 5-1 on Wednesday. He needed just seven pitches, all strikes, to gather three outs.

Our View: Brandon Lyon blew the Tigers' first save opportunity on Tuesday, and given the volatile closer situation in Detroit, manager Jim Leyland figures to just go with the hot arm. Look for Rodney to get the next save opportunity as a result.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 4/1, 12:41 PM CT
Fernando Rodney has been tabbed by Jim Leyland to be the Tigers' closer to start the season, according to the Detroit Free Press. "Does that mean he's going to come in every time? I don't know that," Leyland said. "I wouldn't make a big deal that I named Fernando Rodney the closer, because I really haven't. But he's going to close that first game, hopefully. I think Fernando Rodney is in the best shape he's been in since I've been here...I think he's throwing the ball extremely well. He's healthy. I think he'll have a good year. His control's better."

Our View: Rodney struggled in the role last season, and his 7.00 ERA through nine outings this spring don't give us much reason to suspect he'll thrive in it this season. Brandon Lyon will still likely be a factor in the ninth-inning, but neither pitcher comes with a very high recommendation. Of Rodney's numbers last season, the most alarming has to be his 6.69 BB/9 rate.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 3/27, 3:05 PM CT
Fernando Rodney did not look good for his third-straight outing, giving up two hits and one earned run (two total) in the eighth inning against Atlanta on Friday.

Our View: Rodney had surrendered five hits, two walks and five runs in his previous two innings of work. Had he been more effective, he may have been in contention for Detroit's closer's role, as current closer Brandon Lyon hasn't looked good either, but as it stands, Lyon should enter the season as the Tigers' ninth-inning stopper.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 3/15, 4:39 PM CT
Fernando Rodney threw a shutout fourth inning while allowing no hits or walks and striking out one as the Tigers beat Washington 3-0 on Sunday.

Our View: In five innings this spring, Rodney has allowed one run, but four hits and three walks. Thanks to his control problems, he has likely lost his chance to close, with Brandon Lyon taking over that role. He should still operate as the setup man, and provide plenty of strikeouts and free passes throughout the season.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 1/28, 4:48 PM CT
While Brandon Lyon is the favorite to close this season for the Tigers, Fernando Rodney is expected to compete for the role in spring training, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Rodney picked up 13 saves in 19 chances last season, and finished with his highest ERA (4.91) since 2003. He will have to show that he has made major strides with his control and make-up before beating out Lyon for the position.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 1/21, 7:19 PM CT
Tigers manager Jim Leyland says that changes to the bullpen are still on the way, according to the Detroit News.

Our View: After closer Todd Jones retired at the end of last season, it left the position vacant. We'll let you know what player is expected to rack up saves with the Tigers in 2009 as the situation develops this spring.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 1/14, 2:25 PM CT
Fernando Rodney has avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal with the Tigers worth $2.7 million, according to the Denver Post. There is not believed to be any incentives in the contract.

Our View: The club is still considering their options at closer, but could potentially settle on employing Rodney in the role.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 1/6, 10:06 AM CT
The Tigers are yet to find a closer and there is speculation that the club could turn to Fernando Rodney as their ninth-inning man in 2009, according to the Detroit News.

Our View: He did not fare well when given a chance to close last season, and it is questionable if the club or manager Jim Leyland would actually count on him to close in 2009. He is best-suited to work as a setup man.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 11/2, 3:24 PM CT
The Detroit Tigers are offering up reliever Fernando Rodney to teams who need closers, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Rodney is all over the place with his control, with a staggering BB/9 rate of 6.69. He has the ability to strike people out, and accumulated 13 saves last season, but is a guy fantasy owners should know will have a chance to be yanked out of the closer's role at any point due to his control issues.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 9/16, 9:49 PM CT
Fernando Rodney blew his sixth save of the season on Tuesday night when he allowed six baserunners and three runs without recording an out in the ninth inning against the Rangers.

Our View: Rodney has confirmed once and for all that he cannot handle the closer's duty. Do not expect the Tigers to give it to anyone else for 2008, but expect a return to the setup role for Rodney in 2009.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 9/9, 9:06 PM CT
Fernando Rodney served up two hits and one run over 0.2 innings on Tuesday night and blew a save against the A's. He ended up taking the loss, his fifth of the season. Rodney is 0-5 and has converted 10 of his 15 save chances.

Our View: Rodney had been doing a nice job over the past four or five weeks, but opponents have been getting to him in August. He remains useful in fantasy leagues because he gets saves.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 9/6, 6:45 PM CT
Fernando Rodney picked up his ninth save of the season with a wild ninth inning on Saturday. He loaded the bases before getting Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau out to end the game.

Our View: Rodney has not been a reliable closer for the Tigers but he was able to get it done on Saturday. His ERA is down to 4.42. On the road he is 0-3 with a 7.02 ERA.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 9/2, 9:36 PM CT
Fernando Rodney gave up a run in the top of the ninth inning that allowed the Angels to beat the Tigers 5-4. As you might expect, the inning involved two walks.

Our View: Rodney's control continues to be awful, and if he could manage better accuracy on his pitches, he could be dominant. But fantasy owners will have to see that to believe it.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 8/22, 10:07 PM CT
Fernando Rodney made the ninth inning an exasperating one for Tigers fans one again, giving up two runs on three hits but ultimately getting his sixth save of the year in Detroit's 4-3 win over the Royals.

Our View: Rodney struck two batters out, but he also walked a hitter, and his grip on the role as closer has to be very loose.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 8/22, 12:25 PM CT
The Detroit Free Press believes Fernando Rodney could be the Tigers' best option to close games in 2009. The Tigers' coaching staff made a few adjustments to his delivery. They had him quit turning so much in his windup when he threw his fastball. And they got him to stay more balanced over the rubber during his delivery. The changes have had favorable results and has verified to the team that he can be a full-time closer.

Our View: Barring a collapse down the stretch, Rodney looks to be a top candidate to be the Tigers' closer next season, assuming they don't add a free agent, such as Francisco Rodriguez.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 8/18, 11:10 PM CT
Fernando Rodney picked up the save for the Tigers Monday, pitching 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief while striking out two batters.

Our View: Rodney has been terrific recently, picking up four saves while tossing nine scoreless innings with 13 strikeouts.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 8/10, 9:45 PM CT
Tigers reliever Fernando Rodney has been easing back his velocity in an attempt to gain better control of his pitches, according to MLive.com. "To just go out there and rev back and throw it at 98 and not be close to the strike zone, that's counterproductive," said Detroit manager Jim Leyland.

Our View: Rodney's biggest problem has been his control, but in his last 4.1 innings, he has walked just one batter, an obvious improvement. His fantasy value is much higher if he can stay as the closer and keep from putting men on base via bases on balls.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 8/7, 10:24 PM CT
Tigers reliever Fernando Rodney picked up his second save of the year, going 1.1 innings while striking out two and walking none.

Our View: After four outings in a row giving up at least one run, Rodney has now gone two outings and 4.1 innings allowing no runs, and more importantly, only walking one batter. If he has good control, he can be a solid closer, and useful fantasy asset.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 7/27, 4:21 PM CT
The AP reports that manager Jim Leyland said in Sunday's pregame show that Fernando Rodney would replace Todd Jones as the team's closer. He recorded the final five outs on Sunday against the White Sox while walking two, allowing one hit and one run. He had three strikeouts.

Our View: Rodney is not a lock to keep his new role. He has a 5.17 ERA and 15 Ks to 11 walks and was working extra bullpen sessions last week to get his mechanics smoothed out. Zumaya may have seemed like the more logical option. However, he left the game with soreness in his shoulder.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 6/21, 9:50 PM CT
The Tigers will have Fernando Rodney throw short bullpen sessions every other day in an effort to get his mechanics in order. "I'm going to have Rodney throwing every other day in the bullpen for about five minutes, see if we can get some rhythm and stuff going," manager Jim Leyland said on MLB.com. "We've got to get him throwing strikes."

Our View: The sessions will go on whether or not the reliever pitched in the game the previous night or may pitch that day. Rodney has allowed five runs in just 1/3 of an inning while walking three since returning from the DL.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 6/17, 12:02 AM CT
Fernando Rodney, making his first appearance of the year, allowed a 3-run home run to John Bowker in the bottom of the eighth inning on Monday night on his way to recording only one out for the Tigers.

Our View: The good news is that Rodney was throwing in the low 90's, the bad news was the results. He will certainly become a valuable member of the bullpen before the end of the year, but he looked rusty with his location tonight.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 6/16, 8:36 PM CT
Fernando Rodney, out due to shoulder tendinitis, has been activated from the DL on Monday, according to the Associated Press. “I don’t know exactly how I’ll use Rodney, whether in a big-game situation," manager Jim Leyland said. "I’d like to get his feet wet for an inning. It was nice to put his name on the card. It’s been a while.”

Our View: Rodney will be joined by bullpen mate Joel Zumaya, hopefully by the end of the week, as the Tigers' pen will finally begin to resemble the unit they thought they would have this off-season. Rodney has suffered multiple setbacks this year, so take a careful approach toward adding him to your roster.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 6/14, 7:52 AM CT
Fernando Rodney is on track to rejoin the Tigers on Monday, the Detroit News reports. He has missed the entire season to date due to right shoulder tendinitis.

Our View: Rodney may work his way back into the back of the bullpen eventually, but it's not going to happen right away. Fantasy owners shouldn't put too much stock in him after he's missed so much time.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 6/10, 8:08 PM CT
Fernando Rodney threw in front of Tigers pitching coach Chuck Hernandez on Tuesday afternoon. The reliever is on his way back from right shoulder tendinitis and is trying to work out any mechanical issues, MLB.com reports. Rodney will make a two-inning outing at Triple-A Toledo on Friday and is likely still a week away from returning to the majors.

Our View: It wasn't too long ago that Rodney was a potential option to replace the sometimes-shaky Todd Jones, but the Tigers have to simply hope Fernando can come back and stay healthy. We don't view him as a closer candidate at this point.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 6/2, 1:40 PM CT
Relievers Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya are both expected to begin their rehab assignments on Tuesday, according to MLB.com. Rodney will be sent to Triple-A Toledo, and Zumaya will go to Class-A Lakeland.

Our View: Once they begin pitching Tuesday, the Tigers can keep them on rehab for up to 30 days before they must be activated from the DL or moved. Neither is expected to need the full 30 days, and Manager Jim Leyland mentioned that he hopes to have them back sometime this month. They will both provide a sizable boost to the Tigers' bullpen. Rodney recently visited Dr. James Andrews, but he found nothing wrong with his ailing right shoulder other than tendinitis, and he progressed well since then.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 5/23, 8:40 PM CT
Fernando Rodney tossed two innings Friday in his second extended spring game this week, according to MLB.com. The reliever was clocked in the 93-94 MPH range, up from the 88-89 he was clocked at earlier in the week. Rodney has battled shoulder tendinitis since spring training.

Our View: A rehab assignment for Rodney has not been discussed yet, but it can't be that far off.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 5/23, 9:20 AM CT
Fernando Rodney will throw two innings in an extended spring training game on Friday, the Detroit Free Press reports. He is on the DL due to right shoulder tendinitis and does not have a timetable for his return.

Our View: The Tigers haven't set a timetable for Rodney, at least not publicly. The reliever will likely use up all 30 days of a minor league rehab assignment, and we'll set our clocks once that designation begins.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 5/18, 6:15 PM CT
Like fellow injured hurler Joel Zumaya, Fernando Rodney has been cleared to throw batting practice on his way back from shoulder tendinitis, according to MLB.com. "They won't go out for rehab until they're absolutely, 100 percent ready," manager Jim Leyland said. "When you do that, the clock starts ticking. I have no idea when that's going to be."

Our View: The Tigers will welcome back Rodney with open arms when he is ready, but as you just read, we don't really have a time line as to when that might happen.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 5/1, 8:12 PM CT
Fernando Rodney (shoulder) threw a six minute session off the mound on Thursday at the team's spring training facility, according to MLB.com. This was the first throwing session for Rodney since he visited Dr. James Andrews and received a positive report. "He felt this was his best bullpen session to date," Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said.

Our View: The Tigers could certainly use a boost in the pen since they are trotting out a couple of guys most of you have likely never heard of before. This was nothing more than a first step, but it was still a very encouraging one for a guy who has had one setback after another this season.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 4/22, 8:21 PM CT
Fernando Rodney has begun throwing again, but he has no timetable as he recovers from right shoulder tendinitis, MLB.com reports.

Our View: Rodney has had a series of setbacks with his shoulder, and we don't imagine the Tigers will feel good until he's throwing at full velocity off a mound. He has almost no fantasy value at this point.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 4/17, 9:11 AM CT
Fernando Rodney's latest test on his injured shoulder showed no additional structural damage, according to the Detroit News. Rodney will resume throwing in 3-5 days.

Our View: This is good news for him, but there remains no timetable set for his return to the Tigers.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 4/14, 4:54 PM CT
Fernando Rodney is headed to Alabama to meet with Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday. The reliever has been dealing with right shoulder tendinitis. "He still isn’t able to get over the hump," head athletic trainer Kevin Rand informs the Detroit Free Press. "He still isn’t able to extend and get out there and finish." Previous exams have shown no major damage in the joint.

Our View: We always hold our breath when a player visits Dr. Andrews, as it often turns into a serious surgery. We can only wait and see on Rodney.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 4/12, 10:35 AM CT
Fernando Rodney threw a favorable session on Friday, according to the Detroit News. He hurled 35-40 pitches in a bullpen session on Friday in Lakeland, Fla., and his velocity was reportedly about 80% and he threw, "with greater intensity." He will throw again on Monday, and this was an encouraging outing for him.

Our View: This is good news, but his fantasy stock is yet to go back up.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 4/8, 10:08 AM CT
Fernando Rodney expects to throw off a mound this week, according to the Detroit Free Press. He is on the DL with right shoulder tendinitis, and is expected to throw off a mound later this week, in what could be a major test of his ability to pitch for the Tigers in the near future. He has notably felt chronic pain while pitching off the mound this spring, and Manager Leyland commented on Saturday that he doesn’t expect Rodney to pitch in the majors anytime soon. Rodney also stopped a Friday bullpen session early because of pain in the shoulder. His fantasy stock will continue to drop.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 4/5, 3:07 PM CT
Detroit relief pitcher Fernando Rodney remains a significant question mark after hope planted in a rehab bullpen session has gone sour, according to the Detroit News. Battling tendinitis in his throwing shoulder, Rodney hit the pen on Friday at Comerica Park and failed to assure any of the coaches that things were progressing. "I'm not going into any details about it," said manager Jim Leyland. "I'm not going to get into medical stuff. There was nothing (medically related) discovered or anything. It just wasn't good." In response to the events, Leyland has added RHP Francis Beltran to the active roster and has optioned OF Ryan Raburn to Toledo. This is bad news for a team in need of relief options from the bullpen. We will update this situation when additional information about Rodney and his health becomes available.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 4/3, 1:21 PM CT
Fernando Rodney will throw a bullpen session on Thursday in Lakeland, Fla., according to MLB.com. This will mark the first time that the injured Tigers reliever has thrown since being put on the 15-day DL near the end of spring training. Rodney is dealing with tendinitis in his right shoulder, and he will not throw much. The Tigers want to be very careful with him, especially since he made a trip to the DL in 2007. He could also strengthen their struggling bullpen. The team will evaluate his session on Thursday before making any further decisions. Manager Leyland commented, "We'll have to wait and see how that all plays out. I'm not going to get all excited and rush it."
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 3/30, 5:23 PM CT
Fernando Rodney has been placed on the 15-day DL, according to Detroit News. He is battling a right shoulder injury and the team is in need of relievers as Zumaya has also been placed on the DL.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 3/23, 10:25 AM CT
Fernando Rodney was examined Sunday by Tigers' orthopedic specialist Dr. Stephen Lemos, and noted that he was cleared to begin playing catch, and GM Dombrowski added that Rodney could be throwing off the mound by the end of the new week. This according to Tigers Insider. Rodney is still expected to open the season on the DL.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 3/18, 3:32 PM CT
Fernando Rodney will open the season on the disabled list, according Sports Network. The report noted that the Tigers are not officially required to make a roster move with Rodney for another 10 days, but announced Tuesday he would go on the DL. Rodney has upside as a middle reliever due his K Rate and cheap saves. In fact the right-hander would be in line to vulture saves if Todd Jones struggled like he did a year ago.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 3/16, 10:48 PM CT
After yesterday's loss to the Yankees, Detroit manager Jim Leyland had a few vague but somewhat insightful words concerning Detroit's relief pitching, according to MLB.com. When asked what the team might do during these final days of spring training, Leyland replied, "I've got my team already with the exception of one guy. I've got 24." That would seem to indicate the team is moving forward with all hands on deck staying put, including Fernando Rodney. Rodney has struggled to stay healthy and prove anything in game action. He has been one of the more concerning question marks in the mix for relief work, but a bullpen of 24 would, technically speaking, leave one position open to get to 25. With rumors swirling of a potential trade involving 3B Brandon Inge, it may be that this situation is facing a potential change in chemistry. Stay tuned.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 3/14, 9:47 AM CT
Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Thursday that he considers Fernando Rodney "unlikely" to be ready for the start of the regular season, according to the Detroit Free Press. The news is not surprising, since elbow stiffness has kept him from taking part in a spring game thus far.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 3/13, 1:25 PM CT
Fernando Rodney took part in his first mound throwing session this spring, this according to MLB.com. The right-hander threw only fastballs off the mound in the Tigers bullpen in what pitching coach Chuck Hernandez called a seven-minute session. It was his first session off of a mound since early in camp, when he came up with tendinitis in his right shoulder. "I feel very loose today," Rodney said afterwards. "I didn't try to do too much." Rodney's status for opening day is still unclear.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 3/11, 9:26 AM CT
Fernando Rodney's return to the mound has been delayed for two days, according to The Detroit Free Press. He is still battling shoulder tendinitis and is running out of time to get ready for opening day.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 3/10, 9:51 AM CT
Fernando Rodney is expected to pitch on Tuesday, according to DetroitNews.com. Coach Leyland mentioned this on Rodney's recovery from tendonitis,"This will be the big week, the telling week. But I'm reluctant to emphasize that because I don't want someone rushing himself with the thought, if I don't get moving, I won't make the team." Rodney recorded 54 strikeouts over 50 innings in 2007 and will have a good chance to save games for Detroit if healthy, especially if Todd Jones continues to struggle.
Fernando Rodney, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 3/8, 9:08 AM CT
Fernando Rodney said Friday that he plans to throw a bullpen session next week, according to the Detroit Free Press. "I feel ready to go," he said.
