Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersFriday 5/1, 3:29 PM CT
Derrick Turnbow has been released by the Rangers, according to the NewbergReport.com.

Our View: A clause in his contract allowed him to demand a release if he was not in the majors by May 1. He issued nine walks and 11 hits over 6.1 innings of work in Triple-A.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersSaturday 2/28, 9:30 PM CT
Derrick Turnbow pitched well for the Rangers on Saturday, picking up the win in one inning of work. He allowed just one hit and also fanned a batter.

Our View: Turnbow has a shot to be Texas' closer this year, but Frank Francisco comes in as the favorite for the job.

Updating an earlier report, the one-year deal with the Rangers that Derrick Turnbow signed is for $925,000 if he makes the team, with $325,000 in possible incentives, according to The Dallas Morning News.

Our View: Turnbow is a long shot to contribute much this season, but you can't teach heat, and he can still bring that when healthy.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersThursday 1/1, 7:33 AM CT
MLB.com reports that he Rangers have reached a tentative agreement for a one-year deal with reliever Derrick Turnbow. It is said to be a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Our View: Turnbow battled shoulder injuries last season and appeared in just eight games. It's been some time since he has been effective, but he's worth keeping an eye on. The Rangers don't have much of a bullpen, so Turnbow could be relied on heavily - assuming that he makes the roster and can remain healthy. Both are far from certain.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersWednesday 12/31, 8:58 PM CT
The Rangers continue to be interested in Derrick Turnbow, according to MLB.com. Pitching coach Mike Maddux worked with Turnbow a couple of years ago in Milwaukee, so it would seem to be a good match for him. The Marlins and Pirates also remain interested in the righty.

Our View: It is unclear if Turnbow would become the Rangers' closer, but if he could rekindle some of the 2005 magic in which he recorded 39 saves, he wouldn't be a bad bet for the spot.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersTuesday 12/30, 7:05 AM CT
The Sun Sentinel indicates that the Marlins are one of the three top contenders for reliever Derrick Turnbow.

Our View: Turnbow nailed down 39 saves in 2005, and would provide a veteran presence to a Marlins' bullpen that lost Arthur Rhodes, Kevin Gregg, Joe Nelson and Doug Waechter. Turnbow could also provide insurance as a closer behind Matt Lindstrom.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersMonday 12/29, 2:17 PM CT
There are three serious contenders for Derrick Turnbow, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: The Tigers, Marlins, Rays, Rangers, Phillies, Rockies, and Giants have all garnered interest in Turnbow, but the race to sign him has been narrowed down to just three teams. The Pirates are known to be one, but the other two were not disclosed.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersTuesday 12/23, 4:08 PM CT
The Rockies are still looking at Derrick Turnbow, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: The Rockies lost their best reliever to free agency in Brian Fuentes and want to improve their bullpen further after signing Alan Embree and Glendon Rusch.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersSaturday 12/20, 10:19 AM CT
The Marlins have inquired about reliever Derrick Turnbow, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The Marlins are set to go with Matt Lindstrom as their closer, but are interested in Turnbow as a right-handed option for the back of their pen. The Rockies, Pirates, Rays, Rangers, Tigers, Giants and Phillies are also interested in the former standout reliever.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersWednesday 12/17, 2:05 PM CT
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates are still highly interested in reliever Derrick Turnbow, but have only offered him a minor-league deal, whereas one unknown club has offered him a major-league deal.

Our View: Turnbow is scheduled to throw in mid-January for teams that are interested in him, but it's possible he could sign a deal before that date.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersFriday 12/12, 10:09 AM CT
The Tigers have been in contact with Derrick Turnbow's rep, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View: The Rockies, Pirates, and Giants are also interested in the reliever. Turnbow is known for his strong arm, and will throw for scouts in mid-January.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersMonday 12/8, 5:38 PM CT
The San Francisco Giants have offered free agent hurler a non-guaranteed contract to come to spring training, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Our View: There are other clubs interested in Turnbow as well, such as the Pittsburgh Pirates. Teams are still intrigued by his power arm, despite the horrific control he exhibited last year.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersWednesday 12/3, 11:09 AM CT
The Pittsburgh Pirates are talking with free agent reliever Derrick Turnbow about joining them, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: Turnbow was so horrid last year that the Brewers sent he and his $2.5 million salary to the minor leagues. Once there, he encountered shoulder woes that ended his season in July.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersSaturday 8/2, 9:20 AM CT
Derrick Turnbow and the Brewers have decided the reliever will start physical therapy instead of surgery to try and repair his torn right rotator cuff, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View: Turnbow will not pitch again in the 2008 season, and even when he did, he was awful. The righty threw 6.1 innings, walked 13, gave up 12 hits, had an ERA of 15.63, a WHIP of 3.95, a H/9 of 17.05 and a BB/9 of 18.47.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersMonday 7/28, 6:58 PM CT
Brewers' former closer Derrick Turnbow has been diagnosed with a slight undersurface tear of the rotator cuff in his pitching shoulder according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Our View: Turnbow will be examined Wednesday by team physician William Raasch to determine whether he will undergo surgery or merely physical therapy as a course of action. Either way, he is done for the 2008 season.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersWednesday 7/23, 8:01 PM CT
Derrick Turnbow has been placed on the Triple-A disabled list due to issues with his right arm, according to MLB.com. Turnbow will have a full set of tests run, including an MRI, to find out if there are any structural issues in his throwing arm.

Our View: Turnbow has walked an amazing 41 batters in 18 minor league appearances in the minors and has completely lost "it." Whenever he is deemed to be healthy, he will be sent to Arizona to play with the team's Arizona League ballclub in yet another demotion.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersMonday 5/26, 10:42 AM CT
Derrick Turnbow's control problems have gotten worse since being sent down to Triple-A Nashville, but GM Doug Melvin stated that the Brewers do not intend to release him, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. In 4.1 innings entering Saturday, he had walked 15 hitters, while allowing five hits and seven earned runs in six outings at Triple-A. Melvin said, "As long as we're paying him what we're paying him ($3.2 million), there's no sense in releasing him. It's not like he's taking somebody's job."

Our View: Turnbow was an All-Star reliever in 2006, but allowed 11 runs on 12 hits over a mere 6.1 innings of work with the Brewers this season, with 13 walks.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersFriday 5/9, 1:37 PM CT
Derrick Turnbow has accepted a Triple-A assignment with the Brewers, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He will report on Monday.

Our View: Turnbow was an All-Star reliever in 2006, but got rocked for 11 runs on 12 hits over a mere 6.1 innings of work this season, with 13 walks and five strikeouts. A stint at Triple-A could do him some good, but he isn't worth waiting for as a fantasy prospect.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersThursday 5/8, 9:02 PM CT
Four teams showed interest in trading for Derrick Turnbow, but when nothing could be worked out so the team decided to place him on irrevocable waivers with the hope of sending him to the minors, according to MLB.com. "If a team comes to me and says, 'I have interest in Turnbow, but I can't take any money on my payroll,' they're asking me to eat his contract and they'll give me a marginal prospect," GM Doug Melvin said. "My response is that if I have to eat his money, I want a prospect in return who is worth at least $1 million. That's why a lot of these guys don't get claimed."

Our View: Turnbow still throws heat, the problem is he just doesn't know where it's going right now with 13 BB in 6.1 innings. You can certainly forget about him for now.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersMonday 5/5, 7:52 AM CT
Derrick Turnbow, who was recently designated for assignment by the Brewers, is said to be on the Mets' radar, according to MetsBlog. The team is discussing whether to sign the reliever, who made the All-Star team in 2006.

Our View: Turnbow was off to a terrible start with Milwaukee prior to his designation, as he allowed 12 hits, 11 runs, and 13 walks over a mere 6.1 innings of work (with a 3.95 WHIP). The Mets may take a chance on him, but fantasy owners should not.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersFriday 5/2, 9:28 AM CT
The Brewers designated Derrick Turnbow for assignment Friday, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Turnbow held a 15.63 ERA in eight games. Joe Dillon was recalled from Triple-A Nashville to replace Turnbow on the roster.

Our View: Some team may be willing to take a chance on Turnbow, but he hasn't been consistently effective since 2005.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersThursday 5/1, 4:46 PM CT
Derrick Turnbow has been bad this year, and he was hideous the other night, so the Brewers are considering sending Turnbow to the minors, according to MLB.com. "When we make a move, we'll let you know," GM Doug Melvin said. "It's not fair to Derrick Turnbow to tell the media what we're doing before we talk to Derrick Turnbow. If there's any move, we'll let you know."

Our View: The team could wait a week and release Turnbow and recall Dave Bush who they just sent down. Turnbow is out of minor league options, so if he refuses such a move by the team he could eventually become a free agent, though he would also have to forfeit roughly $2.5 million in salary.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersWednesday 4/30, 11:20 PM CT
Derrick Turnbow took one for the team on Wednesday night as he was hammered for six runs in two-thirds of an inning as he saw his ERA climb from 7.94 to 15.63. Turnbow allowed four hits and four walks while recording only two outs.

Our View: You can now put behind you the idea of the team turning to Turnbow if Eric Gagne goes down, that job will go to either David Riske or Guillermo Mota if Gagne's health or production suffer.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersWednesday 4/23, 10:19 PM CT
Derrick Turnbow picked up his first save of the season on Wednesday as he allowed one walk and punched out two Phillies batters on Wednesday night.

Our View: David Riske keeps allowing runs, and as much as Ned Yost wants to pitch Eric Gagne every game he can't, so tonight Turnbow was called on and he did the job. Stay tuned to see if he, and not Riske, emerges as the second option behind Gagne.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersMonday 4/21, 10:05 PM CT
Derrick Turnbow came into a tie game in the the ninth inning and proceeded to pick up the loss thanks to two hits, a walk and one run allowed to the Cardinals.

Our View: The Brewers keep trying to get Turnbow on track, but its clear that his control just isn't anywhere close to where it needs to be. If Eric Gange continues to struggle, look for the Brewers to turn to David Riske, not Turnbow, to pick up saves.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersThursday 3/6, 9:25 PM CT
Derrick Turnbow really hasn't found a new pitch, he has actually fixed a mechanical flaw in his motion that has allowed him to recapture the movement on his pitches that has been missing, this according to MLB.com. "He's like Mariano Rivera out there," said Ryan Braun. "Everything he throws has cut on it. It's absolutely nasty." Turnbow is being counted on as the team's 8th inning option this season, but with Eric Gagne in the closers role, Turnbow becomes a very interesting late round pick up in all leagues.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersThursday 12/6, 11:55 AM CT
The Brewers don't anticipate acquiring an established closer before spring training, which mean they're likely to head into the season with Derrick Turnbow as their ninth-inning man. "Derrick probably has a head-start on it because he has done it before and has been an all-star closer," manager Ned Yost told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Turnbow has had success in the closer role in the past, but he's also been prone to wildness and big innings.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersSunday 4/29, 9:18 AM CT
Derrick Turnbow has made a nifty transition to a setup role this year, with a 2.31 ERA through 11 2/3 innings, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports. He's struck out 20 against just five walks, and one of the three runs he's allowed came because Kevin Mench slipped on the wet turf in Chicago.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersMonday 3/19, 9:13 PM CT
Derrick Turnbow threw another scoreless inning against the Cubs on Monday, allowing no hits and one walk. He has yet to allow a run in seven spring innings, and he has walked only two. Turnbow is coming off a horrendous 2006 campaign in which he held a 6.2 BB/9 rate. The Red Sox, who are in desperate need of a closer, have been scouting Turnbow as of late.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersTuesday 12/5, 11:33 AM CT
The Red Sox plan to meet with the Brewers soon to discuss the availability of Derrick Turnbow, according to the Boston Herald. "We'll definitely have a closer by Opening Day, but we'll likely have one before the month is over," GM Theo Epstein said.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersFriday 8/25, 9:29 AM CT
Derrick Turnbow seems to be coming around, as the right-hander has only given up one earned run over his last four outings, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "He's getting real close," Yost said. "He's just missing. It would be nice to get him back to where he was in the first half." Despite his improvement, Turnbow will not return to the closer role this year.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersSaturday 7/29, 10:57 PM CT
Derrick Turnbow picked up his 24th save of the year against the Reds Saturday, which was his first save since June 29. He had temporarily been removed from the closer role due to his recent struggles. It appears as though Turnbow has reclaimed his old job, although there's still a chance that Francisco Cordero, who was acquired from the Rangers on Friday, will get a chance to close some games at some point.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersTuesday 7/25, 10:15 PM CT
In his first appearance since losing his closer job, Derrick Turnbow threw a scoreless inning against the Pirates on Tuesday. If he can pitch a few more outings like this one, it's possible that the Brewers will re-insert him into the closer role sometime soon.
Derrick Turnbow, P, Texas RangersSaturday 7/22, 9:49 PM CT
The Brewers are moving Derrick Turnbow out of the closer's role for the time being, according to the AP. Manager Ned Yost will use Danny Kolb as his primary closer "until Derrick gets back on track."
