Scot Shields feels good while recovering from June surgery to repair the patella tendon in his left knee, according to MLB.com. Shields said, "I think everything is on schedule. I feel really good. There is no limp anymore. I think once baseball activity begins it will be a little sore."

Our View: The 34-year-old vet is hopeful of being fully healthy for the start of training camp next year. He is the Angels' all-time leader among relievers with 42 wins, and has a 3.03 career ERA.

Updating an earlier report, Scot Shields underwent season-ending surgery on his left knee to repair the patella tendon Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: The Angels expect Shields to resume baseball activities in around six months. His 42 wins rank first in franchise history among relievers, and he will be missed in their bullpen.

Scot Shields has been transferred from the 15 to the 60-day DL by the Angels, according to TSN.

Our View: Shields will have season-ending knee surgery, and the middle reliever should no longer be held on fantasy rosters.

The Orange County Register reports that Scot Shields will have knee surgery on Tuesday and he will not return for the Angels this season. He has been on the DL since May 27 with patellar tendinitis in his left knee.

Our View: Shields has been an excellent middle reliever throughout his career, but he was having his worst season of his career in 2009 thorugh 20 appearances. There's a chance he could return in September or in the playoffs, but don't count on it.
Scot Shields, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 6/6, 8:35 AM CT
According to the LA Times, injured setup man Scot Shields has yet to throw a pitch since he landed on the disabled list.

Our View: The inflammation in Shields' knee is not subsiding and he will most likely not return on Wednesday, when he is eligible to come off the DL. The earliest the team can see him returning is the end of the month.
Scot Shields, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 5/27, 7:04 AM CT
Scot Shields has been placed on the 15-day DL with patella tendinitis in his left knee, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Shields' 42 wins as a reliever are the most in franchise history, but he has been struggling this season as he allowed runs in eight of his 20 appearances. He won't be missed in fantasy leagues while on the shelf.
Scot Shields, P, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 5/24, 11:29 PM CT
According to the LA Times, the Angels are considering putting reliever Scot Shields on the disabled list or simply shutting him down for a week due to tendinitis in his left knee.

Our View: Shields apparently doesn't want to do either of these options, but he may not have a say in it. The tendinitis isn't subsiding and regardless of his claims that it isn't affecting his delivery he needs to rest it. He's also not having his typical strong season, so it makes sense for the Angels to sit him.

The L.A. Times reports that reliever Scot Shields has been dealing with tendinitis in his left knee. The pitcher maintains that it is not affecting his delivery. He backed it up in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Royals. He threw two hitless innings, struck out four, and picked up his first win of the season.

Our View: Shields had been having a nightmare season prior to facing the Royals. In his first 9.2 innings, he has allowed 10 earned runs and walked 11 others. We hope that he will look this sharp the remainder of the season, but we are hesitant to believe his control issues are suddenly behind him.

Scot Shields was dominating in 2.1 innings of relief pitching as he held the Red Sox of the scoreboard while striking out three.

Our View: Shields was particularly nasty on this night as he seemingly turned back the clock a couple of seasons throwing 94 mph darts along with his devastatingly tight curveball.

Scot Shields had a rough outing Tuesday and manager Mike Sciosca decided to give the ball to Jose Arrendondo in the eighth inning Wednesday, but Sciosca stated that Shields has not lost his job as the Angels' primary setup man, according to the LA Times. Shields needs to fix a "release-point issue" but Sciosca added, "He's the guy we've got a lot of confidence in to give the ball."

Our View: Shields should remain penciled into lineups in leagues that use middle men.

Scot Shields, who hasn't pitched in a week because of a left rib-cage injury, threw 20 pitches off a bullpen mound Saturday, according to the LA Times. The righty said he felt fine, and manager Mike Scioscia expects his setup man to be available for today's game.

Our View: Jose Arredondo has filled in nicely for Shields, but the Halos will welcome the veteran back.

Scot Shields underwent X-rays on his ribcage on Friday after experiencing some pain, according to the LA Daily News.

Our View: The test results did not reveal a significant problem, but the team doctors could not guess as to when he will be able to return to the Angels' bullpen. He has been bothered by tightness in his left side, and coach Mike Sciosca previously commented that he would not be surprised if Shields landed on the DL.

Scot Shields has left the Angels' in Seattle to be examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum in Southern California, according to the OC Register. Shields felt tightness in his left side while warming up Saturday. He pitched a scoreless inning that night but has not pitched since.

Our View: He is yet to undergo an MRI, but Mike Sciosca plans to have him back this weekend. He added that it wouldn't surprise him if Shields landed on the DL, however.

The Angels will use a closer-by-committee until K-Rod is able to return, which should only be a few days, according to MLB.com. "We've got a couple of arms at the back end of the bullpen to close it out," manager Mike Scioscia said. "We'll do it by matchups. When it goes three, four days, we can absorb that with a 10-man staff. But we can't absorb that for too long." The best bet for saves is Scot Shields, but it appears Scioscia will mix and match.

Scot Shields will likely be the Angels' closer until Francisco Rodriguez returns from his ankle injury, according to MVN.com. The setup man's fantasy value should rise a bit for the time being.

Scot Shields tested his right forearm with 31 pitches inside the Metrodome Tuesday. Reggie Willits, who stood in the batter's box to simulate a hitter for Shields, said he thought the reliever looked terrific. "The ball was jumping out of his hand," Willits said on MLB.com. "I didn't expect him to look that good, honestly. His breaking ball had good life, and everything had good movement. He looked like he was full-tilt out there to me." Shields will pitch Thursday for Triple-A Salt Lake and could be activated on Sunday when eligible. It sounds like there's a good chance you will be able to re-insert Shields into your lineup next week.
Scot Shields, P, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 3/30, 9:29 AM CT
The Angels placed Scot Shields on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 21, on Saturday. Shields, who is suffering from forearm soreness, will receive work on the farm and remain there until he gets healthy enough to fill his setup role the Angels.
Scot Shields, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 3/29, 8:01 AM CT
Scot Shields tosed 40 pitches in a bullpen session on Friday, according to the LA Times. If all goes well with another session Sunday and a simulated game Tuesday, he should begin a minor league rehab assignment Thursday or Friday. It appears he could be over his sore forearm in time to join the Angels for the second week of the season.
Scot Shields, P, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 3/28, 8:11 AM CT
Scot Shields won't be available in the Angels bullpen when the season gets underway, according to the LA Times. It's not clear when he'll be over his tight right forearm, but you'll want to keep him out of your first-week lineups.
Scot Shields, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 3/25, 4:50 PM CT
Scot Shields underwent an MRI that revealed no abnormalities in his inflamed forearm, according to the LA Times. Manager Mike Scioscia said that Shields would remain behind for extended spring training to pitch in minor league games when the Angels break camp Thursday. Barring a dramatic improvement in his health, it appears unlikely that Shields will be ready for opening day. Let's hope he'll be ready soon after, though.

Scot Shields, who has been slowed this spring with forearm soreness, reluctantly conceded on Monday that he might not be ready to open the season in his typical setup role, this according to the team website. Shields' forearm strain, which surfaced as he was coming back from shoulder soreness, is being treated, and says he feels "much better," but he doesn't know if he'll get enough work in by opening day to assume his spot on the pitching staff. "I want to be there," Shields said. No announcement has been made but this kind of news is typically dead-solid-perfect, especially when it is the player that is telling the story.

Scot Shields has been slowed by forearm soreness and will take a few days off to rest, according to the LA Times. The team does not believe the ailment is serious but there is slight concern that their setup man could miss Opening Day. Shields states that he will be ready and Manager Scioscia commented, " We're looking at a tight timeline, but as of right now, we're still confident he'll be ready. This time of spring, when things crop up, it heightens your awareness to make sure it's calmed down and you take care of it."

Scot Shields was happy with his first appearance of the spring on Thursday, according to the LA Times. "It was a good day for the most part -- the ball was coming out of my hand in mid- season form, and there was no pain," said Shields. The set-up man has been slowed this spring by a sore shoulder, but he should be ready for the opener, barring a setback.

Scot Shields is feeling 100% ready for action again after suffering through a sore shoulder, according to the LA Times. He will make his Cactus League debut very soon.
Scot Shields, P, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 3/7, 7:52 AM CT
Scot Shields has been dealing with a sore shoulder this spring and is not expected to take part in an exhibition game until next week, according to the LA Times. Shields has worked more innings than any other reliever in baseball over the past four seasons, but neither Shields nor manager Mike Scioscia believe that's why Shields faded late last season. "He maintained his velocity," Scioscia said. "He maintained the crispness of his breaking ball. I don't think it was workload-related. I think it was more of a rhythm and mechanical issue. He's got a complicated delivery." Let's hope they're right and that Shields can return to form as one of the top non-closing relievers in fantasy.
Scot Shields, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 9/10, 5:35 AM CT
Scot Shields might be getting his setup job back. "The last outing I felt back to my old self," Shields said, according to the LA Times. "I was able to locate the ball a lot better and I threw some pretty good breaking balls." Manager Mike Scioscia wasn't prepared Sunday to say that Shield had reclaimed the role, though. Nonetheless, after losing the job by allowing 17 runs in 9 1/3 innings, Shields has not given up a run in his past two outings. If he keeps it up, he'll resume his old role in front of K-Rod.

The Angels signed Scot Shields to a four-year contract extension Thursday, according to Sports Network. The deal replaces the one-year contract Shields signed in February of this year. Financial terms weren't disclosed. "Scot has been crucial to the success of our bullpen," said Angels general manager Bill Stoneman. "He is one of the most reliable and resilient relievers in the game and we are thrilled to keep him in an Angel uniform for a while ".

Scot Shields, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 2/28, 8:43 AM CT
Scot Shields, who had to be scratched from his last scheduled batting-practice session Saturday because of shoulder soreness, played catch on Tuesday for the first time in three days, according to the LA Times. "It's nothing serious," Shields said. "It's the same thing I've had the last couple of years. In the past I'd try to throw through it. Once I started feeling it this time, I took a step back, so I won't have to take a week off. It should just be a couple of days." Shields may not appear in an exhibition game until early next week.
