The Rockies signed first basemen Josh Phelps to a minor-leauge contract on Saturday.

Our View: Also signed were right-handed pitcher Chris Gissell, and outfielders Alex Escobar and Bronson Sardinha. All four will be given shots to make the Rockies' Triple-A team.

MLB.com reports that the Giants signed first baseman Josh Phelps to a Minor League contract with an invitation to big league Spring Training.

Josh Phelps was designated for assignment on Wednesday, according to The Sports Network.

Our View: Phelps hit .265 in just 34 AB for the Cardinals in 2008 and has failed to live up to the potential he flashed in 2002-03 when ht hit 35 home runs with 124 RBI in 661 AB. He will catch on with someone, but his prospects are likely limited to being a solid bat in Triple-A.

Right-handed hitter Josh Phelps got the start for the Cardinals in left field, replacing lefty Rick Ankiel, who is nursing a sore abdomen, according to StLCardinals.com.

Our View: Phelps bashed 31 home runs in the minor leagues, but he won't see enough regular playing time to contribute to fantasy squads.

Josh Phelps has been recalled to the Cardinals from Triple-A Memphis. According to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Jaime Garcia was sent down to make room for Phelps.

Our View: Phelps will most likely only see some pinch-hitting duties for the Cardinals but in Memphis Phelps showed some real power hitting 31 home runs.

The Cardinals signed Josh Phelps to a minor-league deal Thursday. Phelps will make $750,000 if he makes the major league roster, with a possible $250,000 more in incentives, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal. If he sticks with the Cards, Phelps would be used mainly in a pinch-hitting role, while also serving as Albert Pujols' backup at first and as the third catcher.

Josh Phelps might pick up two starts this weekend as the Yankees face left-handers Friday and Sunday, the New York Daily News reports.

Josh Phelps will start for the Yankees on opening day against Tampa Bay lefty Scott Kazmir. It appears that Phelps and Doug Mientkiewicz will begin the year platooning at first base, though if Phelps hits early, he could steal some playing time against right-handed pitching, too. Phelps hit .400 with three homers in spring training.

Josh Phelps has officially made the Yankees over Andy Phillips, the team's website reports. Phelps batted .400 with three homers and 10 RBI in 20 spring games and may even challenge Doug Mientkiewicz for playing time at first base, with Joe Torre saying that the Yankees may not necessarily continue their projected platoon.

Josh Phelps started Thursday night's game against Toronto, further evidence that he has beaten out Andy Phillips to be the backup first baseman behind Doug Mientkiewicz, the Westchester Journal-News reports. "What he's shown us this spring is that he handles himself very well against right-handers," Joe Torre said.

Josh Phelps is hitting .440 with eight RBI this spring and has a shot at beating out Andy Phillips (.231), the New York Post reports. "We don't have to make a decision yet," Joe Torre said. "Josh Phelps certainly hasn't hurt himself."
