Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 9/27, 8:18 AM CT
Scott Downs (hamstring) has likely thrown his last pitch of 2009, according to the Toronto Sun.

Our View: Downs will finish the season with a 3.09 ERA and nine saves in 49.2 innings pitched.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 9/21, 7:13 PM CT
Scott Downs may be done for the remainder of the season after suffering a hamstring injury during battle with the Yankees on September 16, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Downs is day-to-day, but skipper Cito Gaston stated there may not be enough time for him to recover before the end of the season.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 8/24, 3:50 PM CT
Scott Downs has been activated off the DL by the Blue Jays, according to the Twitter page of beat writer Jordan Bastian. To make room on the roster, the team placed third baseman Edwin Encarnacion on the 15-day DL.

Our View: Downs isn't expected to take back the closer's role right away, but he should eventually regain ninth inning duties. Fantasy owners should activate him as well, but don't be shocked if he doesn't get save opportunities for another week or so.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 8/23, 3:07 PM CT
Scott Downs (bruised toe) appears poised to be activated off of the disabled list on Monday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The lefty has made three rehab appearances since being shut down on August 2, allowing one earned run, three hits and a walk, while striking out two, in 2.1 innings in the Florida State League.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 8/16, 12:41 PM CT
Scott Downs participated in felding drills and threw a bullpen session on Sunday, according to the Twitter page of beat writer Jordan Bastian. Downs is expected to stay in Florida to begin a rehab assignment this week.

Our View: It sounds like Downs is doing much better, and if the rehab stint goes smoothly he could be back soon. He will begin this week, and we will keep you updated on his status going forward.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 8/2, 2:16 PM CT
Scott Downs has landed back on the DL after aggravating his left big toe, the same one that caused him to be placed on the DL earlier in the year, according to CBS Sports. "Instead of day to day, we'll go week to week," manager Cito Gaston said. "We want to make sure he's healthy when he comes back."

Our View: Downs had clearly been affected by the toe, having given up seven runs in his last five innings, and it seems like he'll likely need more than 15 days to return to full health. Jeremy Accardo was called up to fill his roster spot, but it will be Jason Frasor that gets most, if not all, of the save opportunities in Toronto.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 7/8, 2:52 PM CT
The Toronto Blue Jays have activated closer Scott Downs off the DL, according to the Twitter page of Jays' beat writer Jordan Bastian. Downs has been out with a strained left big toe.

Our View: Downs threw a successful session yesterday, and apparently the team feels comfortable activating him today. He may not get all of the save opportunities right away, but after the All-Star break he should be the full-time closer again.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 7/4, 8:39 AM CT
MLB.com is reporting that Blue Jays' closer Scott Downs could be activated this weekend after throwing a successful bullpen session on Friday. Downs has been out with a strained big toe in his left foot.

Our View: Manager Cito Gaston told the media that the team would evaluate Downs again today, but it looks like he is very close to being ready. We will keep you update on his status for the rest of the weekend, but for now get ready to activate him soon.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 6/30, 10:22 AM CT
MLB.com is reporting that Blue Jays' closer Scott Downs is scheduled to throw off a mound on Tuesday and participate in fielding drills. Downs is still trying to come back from a sprained left big toe.

Our View: Downs is eligible to come off the DL on July 3, and barring a setback it looks like he will be ready to go on that day. He is expected to resume his role as the closer, so if he is a free agent in your league you may want to give him a look.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 6/27, 1:17 PM CT
According to Blue Jays' writer Jordan Bastian's twitter account, Manager Cito Gaston says that closer Scott Downs will come off the DL on July 3rd when first eligible.

Our View: Downs injured himself batting in inter-league play, but fantasy owners can breath a sigh of relief as he appears to be very close to returning. Downs has been very impressive in the closer's role this season and should be inserted back into lineups as soon as he returns.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 6/18, 7:01 PM CT
As expected, Scott Downs has been placed on the 15-day DL due to a sprained left big toe, according to TSN. Pitcher Jeremy Accardo was recalled from Triple-A as the adjoining move.

Our View: Downs will be missed by the Jays while on the shelf, as he holds a 1.98 ERA over 27.1 innings, with 28 strikeouts. Jason Frasor will handle the closer's role while Downs is out, and is worth targeting in AL-only leagues if you need help in the saves department.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 6/17, 3:53 PM CT
According to MLB.com, Blue Jays' closer Scott Downs will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained big left toe.

Our View: Downs stumbled out of the batters box in the tenth inning of Tuesday night's game and limped down the line to first. Another casualty of inner-league player. No replacement has been named yet to fill in and close for the Jays.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 6/16, 11:17 PM CT
Scott Downs limped off the diamond in the 10th inning of Tuesday's battle at Philadelphia, according to Jordan Bastian's twitter page.

Our View: His X-rays came back negative, but he sustained a lower-leg injury. Bastian believes Downs could land on the DL, but the Jays are yet to update his status.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 6/8, 10:45 PM CT
Scott Downs nailed down a save in Monday's 6-3 win at Texas, as he allowed one hit over 1.1 innings, with one walk and no strikeouts.

Our View: Downs collected his eighth save of the season. Downs is performing well as the Jays' closer, and he remains a viable No. 2 option in fantasy leagues.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 5/30, 3:25 PM CT
Scott Downs picked up his second save in as many nights as Toronto beat Boston 5-3 on Saturday. He needed nine pitches to get three ninth inning outs, although he did allow a hit.

Our View: It doesn't look as if the Jays are contemplating taking the closer's job away from Downs any time soon. Prior to his two saves against the Red Sox he had blown a save after giving up two runs in the previous start.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 5/16, 3:36 PM CT
Scott Downs earned his fourth save of the season on Saturday in a 2-1 win over the White Sox. Downs tossed a perfect ninth inning to shut the door on Chicago.

Our View: Downs has been extremely effective this season, which is why he is still the one on the hill with the game on the line despite B.J. Ryan's return to the lineup. Unless something changes in the Blue Jays' clubhouse, Downs is a solid fantasy option at stopper this season.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 5/5, 3:09 PM CT
Scott Downs didn't get a save Tuesday, but he was dominant in a non-save situation, striking out three while allowing just one hit and no walks in 1.2 innings.

Our View: At what point did Downs become the best reliever in the game? We're kidding... sort of. His ERA sits at 0.59, WHIP at 0.52 and he has a 20/0 K/BB rate in 15.1 innings. Simply dominant. Cito Gaston should have his head examined if he gives the closer job back to B.J. Ryan this year.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 4/26, 4:34 PM CT
Scott Downs earned his second save of the season Sunday as the Blue Jays topped the White Sox 4-3. Downs allowed a lone single in his scoreless ninth inning.

Our View: B.J. Ryan's replacement has been brilliant this season. He has allowed just one earned run in 10.2 innings and has struck out 14 batters over that span.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 4/23, 11:35 PM CT
The same day he was named the closer, Scott Downs picked up his first save of the season. He pitched a scoreless ninth as the Blue Jays held on the beat the Rangers 5-2.

Our View: Downs has been electric this season and probably should have been the closer all year long. If there weren't all those millions attached to B.J. Ryan's name he most likely would have been. Downs now has a 0.93 ERA and has fanned 14 batters in just 9.2 innings.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 4/23, 5:17 PM CT
With B.J. Ryan landing on the DL, Scott Downs is expected to take over as the Jays' closer. Downs boasts a 1.04 ERA, 0.46 WHIP and 13/0 K/BB rate in 8.2 innings this year.

Our View: Sprint to pick Downs up if he's still available, as there is a chance he could be the team's closer for the remainder of the year.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 4/6, 11:40 PM CT
Scott Downs got one out on one pitch and that was all he was needed for as the Blue Jays crushed the Tigers 12-5 on Monday.

Our View: Downs was being considered for the closer's role, but his appearance in this game seems to indicate that the closing job is still B.J. Ryan's to lose. Don't count on Downs to see save opportunities until Ryan blows a save or three.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 4/1, 2:27 PM CT
Scott Downs threw a single shutout inning for the Blue Jays in their 7-6 win over the Nationals on Wednesday. He allowed one walk to go with no strikeouts and no hits.

Our View: Downs has been mentioned as a possible closer candidate in case B.J. Ryan is not ready to handle his typical duties this season. Over the past few years, Downs has been an excellent middle relief option, and he will likely handle some ninth-inning duties in 2009.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 3/30, 6:21 PM CT
Scott Downs may be given a shot to pick up some saves this season, even if B.J. Ryan remains healthy. MLB.com reports that the Blue Jays are concerned about Ryan's overall ineffectiveness this spring and manager Cito Gaston has reportedly been open to the possibility of using Downs in the ninth-inning role

Our View: In three innings of work this spring, Downs has allowed two hits and two walks to go with three runs. He was exceptional in 70.2 innings of work last season when he posted a 1.78 ERA. He also collected five saves but his 7.26 K/9 rate is not ideal for a closer. The 33-year-old is exceptional at shutting down left-handed hitters, and he could be a nice sleeper for fantasy purposes.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 2/18, 3:13 PM CT
Scott Downs has been sent for an MRI after experiencing a twinge in his left elbow, according to MLB.com. GM J.P. Ricciardi said, "Everything was good. It was a good MRI, but when they inject you with the dye, it takes five to six days -- some people a little longer -- to get the dye out. He is getting closer to getting it out, but I would say in the next four or five days, he will be throwing."

Our View: His test came back clean and he will need to rest for a few days before resuming his throwing program. He is expected to serve as the Jays' setup man this season.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 12/9, 9:27 AM CT
The Toronto Sun reports that the Cardinals have expressed interest in the Blue Jays' Scott Downs. He is owed $7.75 million over the next two seasons.

Our View: The left-handed reliever had a 1.78 ERA in 70.2 innings last season and was one of the better setup men in the game last season. He has started before, but a move to St. Louis would likely keep him in the bullpen.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 9/25, 12:55 PM CT
Scott Downs has officially been ruled out for the remainder of the year due to his injured ankle, according to the Toronto Star.

Our View: Downs will finish the year with a career best 1.78 ERA and 1.15 WHIP as he has clearly found his groove in the setup role in Toronto. Of course, the Jays have stated that they might want to move Downs back into the rotation, so keep an eye on what role he is asked to fill as it could drastically alter his value in 2009.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 9/24, 10:32 AM CT
Scott Downs remains day-to-day due to his ailing right ankle, according to the Toronto Star.

Our View: He hasn't thrown in almost two weeks, and fantasy owners should not be counting on the reliever to make an impact with only five games left in the season.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 9/14, 2:13 PM CT
Downs could be shut down for the remainder of the season after aggravated his right ankle injury on Saturday, the Blue Jays' team website reports.

Our View: Downs has done an outstanding job as a setup man this season, and he could be headed for the rotation next season. This is an unfortunate way for his season to end if that is the case.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 9/4, 4:16 PM CT
Scott Downs could be moved from his setup role back into the starting rotation next season, according to MLB.com. "We could put Downs in the rotation," Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi said. "We have that option. We're talking about it, but, obviously, we have to sit down with him and see what he's comfortable with."

Our View: The Jays could have some holes in their rotation next year, especially if A.J. Burnett opts out of his contract as appears likely, but would it really make sense to take Downs out of the bullpen where he has dominated this season (1.23 ERA, 1.06 WHIP), this after a dominating 2007 campaign (2.17 ERA)? Sometimes it's just best to leave things how they are.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 8/19, 9:46 PM CT
Scott Downs is available to pitch again after missing nearly a week due to a sprained right ankle, the AP reports.

Our View: Downs is in the middle of his second straight excellent season. He has turned into one of the best lefty setup men in the business, not that anyone pays attention to those guys.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 8/15, 9:27 AM CT
Scott Downs' foot injury may not require a trip to the DL, according to The Star. The Jays will hold off on putting him on the DL in the hopes that he can recover within the next few days. Any recovery time will depend on Downs' ability to plant his right foot during his throwing motion. Downs accompanied the team to Boston last night but said, "I probably won't pitch there, I wouldn't think."

Our View: Downs has been pitching well this season, with a 1.40 ERA and 1.09 WHIP over 57.2 innings, with 51 strikeouts. He also has five saves to his credit. We will keep you posted on his status.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 8/14, 9:01 AM CT
Scott Downs is likely headed to the DL after spraining his right ankle Wednesday, according to BlueJays.com. Manager Cito Gaston said, "That's a big loss. I can't tell you how much he's done for this club since I've been here. Time after time, night after night, he's just been outstanding. If we lose him for a while, it's really going to hurt us."

Our View: Downs needed crutches to make his way through the visitors' clubhouse at Comerica Park following the game. Downs has been pitching well this season, with a 1.40 ERA and 1.09 WHIP over 57.2 innings, with 51 strikeouts. He also has five saves to his credit.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 5/14, 10:40 PM CT
Scott Downs picked up his fifth save of the season and secured Roy Halladay's fourth victory of the yar as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Minnesota Twins 6-5 on Wednesday night.

Our View: Downs has taken over the role of the injured Jeremy Accardo, as the team's primary setup man and situational closer.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 5/2, 8:44 PM CT
Scott Downs picked up his second save of the season in Friday's 2-0 win over the White Sox. The Jays right-hander pitched two-thirds of an inning to help Shawn Marcum earn his third victory of the year.

Our View: Downs, Jeremy Accardo, Jess Carson and Shawn Camp combined for 2.1 innings of work to help in the win. B.J. Ryan worked the ninth inning in Thursday's win over Boston, and was not available for tonight's save. Ryan has not been cleared to pitch on back-to-back days as he continues to recover from his 2007 TJ surgery.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 1/18, 11:39 AM CT
Scott Downs signed a three-year, $10 million extension with the Blue Jays Thursday. Pitching exclusively out of the bullpen for the first time, the lefty had a terrific year in 2007, holding a 2.17 ERA and 1.22 WHIP while striking out 57 in 58 innings.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 9/23, 1:12 AM CT
Scott Downs left Saturday's game with a sore back, the AP reports. It's not clear when he might be able to pitch again.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 7/12, 10:00 PM CT
Scott Downs left Thursday's game after being hit on his right foot by a Dustin Pedroia line drive in the eighth inning, according to the AP. His status is unknown.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 2/3, 8:44 AM CT
The Blue Jays signed Scott Downs to a one-year contract on Friday worth $1.025 million, according to the Globe and Mail. Downs, who held a 4.09 ERA in 59 games last year, will work out of the bullpen in 2007, although he could see an occasional spot start.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 8/17, 1:26 PM CT
Scott Downs will make another spot start on Friday, according to the Blue Jays website. Downs, who is 6-1 with a 4.03 ERA, is 1-0 with a 6.43 ERA in four starts this season, but pitched well in his last start, throwing five innings of shutout ball. He will likely be replaced in the rotation by Gustavo Chacin in the near future, if the Blue Jays deem Chacin major league ready.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 8/11, 12:13 PM CT
Scott Downs has officially been named the starter for Saturday's game, according to the Blue Jays website. It will be Downs' fourth spot start of the season.
Scott Downs, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 8/10, 11:43 AM CT
Because Francisco Rosario has a sore back, Scott Downs is expected to get the nod on Saturday, according to the Blue Jays website. "It will probably be Downs, but we don't know for sure," manager John Gibbons said Wednesday.
