Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesFriday 7/10, 4:20 PM CT
Cesar Izturis has been activated from the DL, according to TSN. Pitcher David Hernandez was optioned to Double-A Bowie to make room on the roster.

Our View: Izturis should return to his starting role at shortstop, but does not hit well enough to consider outside of deeper fantasy leagues.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 7/7, 9:25 AM CT
According to MLB.com, injured Orioles' shortstop Cesar Izturis is expected to begin his rehab assignment with Double-A Bowie on Tuesday. The team is hoping that he can play Tuesday and Wednesday in the minors and be ready to rejoin the team Thursday.

Our View: Izturis will have to be 100 percent before the O's bring him back, but if all goes well over the next two days it seems very possible he could be in the lineup on Friday. He doesn't hold much fantasy value, but if there is still anyone out there utilizing him you should be prepared to activate him later this week.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesSaturday 7/4, 1:09 PM CT
According to the Baltimore Sun, Orioles' shortstop Cesar Izturis took live batting practice before Friday's game and is expected to go out on a rehab assignment in the next few days. Izturis is still recovering from an appendectomy.

Our View: Izturis will probably need a decent amount of time in the minors before he returns, so it looks like it will still be a few weeks before he rejoins the team. He will hold no fantasy value upon his return, so no need to give him a look.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 6/30, 8:50 AM CT
The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Orioles' shortstop Cesar Izturis is not expected to be ready to return until late July at the earliest. Izturis is recovering from an appendectomy on June 5.

Our View: Izturis was with the team last week doing some light drills, and he appears to be close to a rehab stint, however manager Dave Trembly isn't as convinced. Either way, Izturis holds very little fantasy value, and should only be considered in the deepest of AL-only leagues.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesWednesday 6/24, 2:30 PM CT
According to the Baltimore Sun, Cesar Izturis rejoined the team Wednesday and did some running in the outfield and took 20-25 swings off a tee. He's still rehabbing from his appendectomy June 5th.

Our View: After running, swinging and throwing Izturis felt no pain, but admitted he was a little weak. The repercussions from the surgery have started to subside though and he should be able to start a rehab session in about a week.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesSunday 6/21, 4:47 PM CT
Cesar Izturis is progressing in his recovery from an appendectomy, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The Orioles believe he could return to the diamond before the end of June. Robert Andino will continue to cover shortstop while Izturis is out.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesWednesday 6/17, 5:59 PM CT
Cesar Izturis had the stitches removed from his emergency appendectomy surgery, according to MASNsports. Manager Dave Trembley says he is feeling better but he has no idea when Izturis will be ready to return.

Our View: Izturis may seem like the last option for fantasy owners who are looking for an everyday starter. However, he does have nine steals in 45 games this season and had 24 last season.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesSunday 6/7, 10:48 AM CT
As expected, Cesar Izturis has been placed on the 15-day DL, according to TSN. Oscar Salazar has been recalled from Triple-A Norfolk as the adjoining move.

Our View: Izturis will be on the shelf for several weeks while recovering from an appendectomy. Robert Andino will see most of the action at shortstop while he is out.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesSaturday 6/6, 12:16 PM CT
The Baltimore Sun reports that shortstop Cesar Izturis will head to the disabled list after undergoing an appendectomy. There is currently no timetable for his return.

Our View: Robert Andino started in Izturis' place on Friday, but the O's will likely call up an additional infielder. Jolbert Cabrera, Carlos Rojas and Melvin Dorta are options.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesFriday 6/5, 9:35 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Cesar Izturis has been diagnosed with appendicitis after being taken to the hospital, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: He is scheduled to undergo an appendectomy. Robert Andino will help fill in at shortstop while he is out.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesFriday 6/5, 8:01 PM CT
Cesar Izturis was taken to the hospital after suffering from severe stomach pains, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: He was taken for a CT scan, and his status is yet to be updated. Robert Andino replaced him at shortstop in tonight's game at Oakland.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 5/19, 7:44 PM CT
Cesar Izturis was not in the Orioles' lineup on Tuesday because of a strained left groin, according to MLB.com. He was replaced by Robert Andino at shortstop.

Our View: Izturis has little-to-no fantasy value, and neither does Andino. Izturis is expected to miss a few games due to the injury, so get him out of your fantasy lineup if you have him starting. You may want to get him out permanently, since he isn't very good.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesMonday 5/18, 8:50 AM CT
Cesar Izturis exited Sunday's game in the eighth inning with a strained left groin, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: The Orioles will see how he feels on Monday, and it remains to be determined if he will miss Tuesday's game at New York.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesMonday 4/20, 1:53 PM CT
Cesar Izturis had the lone RBI for the orioles on Monday in their 12-1 loss to the Red Sox. Izturis was 1-for-4 on the day, and his average now sits at .171 for the season.

Our View: Not much offense coming from the O's today, but Izturis did manage to drive a run in. He hit second in the order today with Adam Jones out with an injury, but expect him to move back down in the order when Jones returns.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesMonday 4/6, 7:07 PM CT
Cesar Izturis was 2-for-4 with a home run, stolen base, two RBI, and two runs scored as the Orioles beat the Yankees 10-5 on Monday.

Our View: Izturis is certainly not known for his power as he slugged just .309 last season while totaling only one home run. He is hitting ninth for Baltimore which is a good spot to total some runs. Brian Roberts and Adam Jones follow him in the order.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesWednesday 12/31, 9:42 AM CT
Cesar Izturis will represent Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: He will join teammate Melvin Mora in the infield with Venezuela.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesWednesday 12/17, 11:57 AM CT
The Baltimore Sun reports that shortstop Cesar Izturis' deal is for two years and $5 million with possible incentives.

Our View: Earlier reports had the deal at two years for $6 million. It is possible for him to earn that much, but only while reaching certain incentives.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 12/16, 8:02 AM CT
The Orioles have officially signed Cesar Izturis to a two-year deal worth around $6 million, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Izturis is a former Gold Glove winner, and was signed to provide consistency at shortstop for Baltimore, which was seriously lacking in 2008.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesWednesday 12/10, 10:16 AM CT
Updating an earlier report, Cesar Izturis has agreed to a deal with the Orioles, according to ESPN.

Our View: Financial terms were not disclosed, and the deal is pending a physical. The Astros will now have to seek another option at shortstop if they trade Miguel Tejada.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesWednesday 12/10, 9:26 AM CT
Cesar Izturis could be an option for the Astros if they trade Miguel Tejada, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: The club would have to act quickly if they want Izturis, as the Orioles are believed to be making progress in negotiations.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 12/9, 2:40 PM CT
MASN.com reports that barring a late change, the Orioles' shortstop options are down to one - Cesar Izturis. Two years at $6.5 million should get it done, though he might take $6 million.

Our View: The Orioles and Izturis have been linked for weeks and a deal between the two seems inevitable. Izturis stole 24 bases and hit .263 last season. He would likely continue to hit ninth in the Orioles lineup, just as he did for the Cardinals last season.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 12/9, 9:30 AM CT
The Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles have picked up contract negotiations on free agent Cesar Izturis, as the slick fielder remains their top shortstop target.

Our View: The Orioles and Izturis have been linked for weeks and a deal between the two seems inevitable. Izturis stole 24 bases and hit .263 last season. He would likely continue to hit ninth in the Orioles lineup, just as he did for the Cardinals last season.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesFriday 11/21, 9:27 AM CT
The Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles have talked to the representative for free agent Cesar Izturis, the latest indication that the slick-fielding shortstop is at the top of their list to fill the team's vacancy at the position.

Our View: Izturis, 28, hit .263 this past season with one homer and 24 RBIs in 135 games for the St. Louis Cardinals. He's a career .260 hitter over parts of 10 major league seasons that also include stints with the Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates. He has never held much fantasy value regardless of his uniform and managed to bat ninth most of the season despite playing in the National League.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesFriday 10/31, 7:22 AM CT
Cesar Izturis has filed for free agency, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: The Cardinals have pinpointed the middle infield as a place to improve offensively, and though open to Izturis' return, they will explore their options. Manager Tony LaRussa has expressed an interest in keeping Felipe Lopez, who is also set to become a free agent.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesThursday 9/25, 4:42 PM CT
Cesar Izturis had a big day at the plate in Thursday's 12-3 victory over the Diamondbacks. He was 3-for-3 with a triple, a walk and his 24th stolen base of the season.

Our View: Izturis has just 21 RBI and 49 runs scored in 132 games this season but his 24 steals make him worth a spot on the fantasy radar. Izturis was 9-for-13 in the series and finished 13-for-25 (.520) against Diamondbacks pitching. It remains to be seen if he will have a starting job in 2009.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesMonday 9/1, 9:47 PM CT
Far from the biggest name on any night for the Cardinals, Cesar Izturis still had a nice outing on Monday with three hits, a run scored and two stolen bases.

Our View: With all the love for others in the offense, many have overlooked Izturis and his 19 stolen bases. He may have no pop (one home run) and a poor average (.254), but those steals are golden in NL-only leagues.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesWednesday 7/23, 10:37 AM CT
Cesar Izturis has decided to ditch pinch-hitting and hit exclusively from the right side, at least for the time being, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The shortstop is batting .294 from the right side and .192 from the left side this year. "I'm more comfortable there," Izturis said. "Look at the numbers."

Our View: If Izturis can get his average up to a respectable number just hitting from the right side (he's currently batting .226 overall), he steals enough bases that he would be usable in NL-only leagues.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesSunday 7/6, 1:15 PM CT
Cesar Izturis has been activated from the DL following his bout with a strained right hamstring, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: He is penciled into today's lineup at shortstop against the Cubs, and will bat seventh in the order. He is only worth consideration in larger NL-only league as he was hitting a mere .241 prior to landing on the DL, to go along with seven fielding errors.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesSaturday 7/5, 3:12 PM CT
The Cardinals will activate Cesar Izturis from the DL on Sunday, not Saturday, MLB.com reports. He has been out due to a strained right hamstring suffered on June 21.

Our View: The light-hitting shortstop can then resume his role of not helping fantasy teams.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesFriday 7/4, 8:45 PM CT
Cesar Izturis, who is recovering from a strained right hamstring, expects to be activated from the DL on Saturday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Izturis is feeling the best he has felt since he injured the hamstring, and expects to return to the Cardinals' lineup as soon as Sunday.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesSunday 6/22, 9:52 AM CT
The Cardinals are sending shortstop Cesar Izturis to the disabled list, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: The team still lacks the in-depth prognosis for the ailing right hamstring Izturis has been nursing since Friday and they wish to make a move quickly to target minor-league candidates to help an already depleted roster. Izturis was hoping it was a mild strain, but he awoke on Saturday to find further discomfort and pain. It is believed the Cardinals will promote outfielder Nick Stavinoha from Triple-A Memphis to fill the roster spot left vacant by the move. We will update Izturis condition as news becomes available.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesSaturday 6/21, 5:08 PM CT
The Cardinals are still waiting on news regarding Cesar Izturis and his injured hamstring. Izturis met with Cardinals' head team physician George Paletta at the team hotel on Saturday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The Cardinals are already basically playing a man short with Yadier Molina's injury, so if Cesar's injury is serious at all, look for him to be placed on the DL.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesFriday 6/20, 9:55 PM CT
Cesar Izturis strained his right hamstring on Friday night and had to be removed from the game in favor of Brendan Ryan, according to MLB.com.

Our View: If Izturis is forced to the DL, look for the Cardinals to call up Brian Barden, D'Angelo Jimenez or Jarrett Hoffpauir to fill the roster spot.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesWednesday 5/14, 11:43 PM CT
The Cardinals didn't need much hitting this evening to pull the 5-1 victory over Pittsburgh, but SS Cesar Izturis finished as the top offensive performer on a night when the Cards racked up 15 total hits. Izturis went 3-for-5, all singles with an additional stolen base (his third of the season), with one RBI.

Our View: Five different players posted multiple hits in this game for the Cards, but none earned more than one RBI. Give Izturis the nod for the swipe.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesFriday 4/25, 8:04 PM CT
Cesar Izturis took batting practice on Friday for the first time since he was hit in the right arm by a pitch on Tuesday, according to the team website. Izturis has struggled in the 20 games he's played in this year. The utility infielder is hitting .186 with eight runs scored and one stolen base.

Our View: A date for Izturis' return to full game action remains uncertain.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesFriday 4/25, 9:52 AM CT
Cesar Izturis participated in infield practice with no limitations on Thursday and took swings in the cage, at balls on a tee, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Izturis said he feels "weakness" in his right hand, but the numbness that followed being hit near the arm with a pitch Tuesday is subsiding. The Cardinals' shortstop plans to take batting practice on Friday and could return to the lineup by the start of next week. Manager Tony La Russa commented that he’d like to avoid using Izturis in the field or as a pinch hitter for a few days.

Our View: This is favorable news for the Cardinals, but Izturis was not providing much to fantasy owners with his .186 average over 59 at-bats, and won't garner much excitement when he returns.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesThursday 4/24, 7:50 AM CT
The swelling has subsided in Cesar Izturis' bruised right arm, but he is not expected to be able to throw at full strength for another five days to a week, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Manager Tony La Russa planned to try not to play him until he's at "100 percent comfortable."

Our View: Izturis was not providing much to fantasy owners with his .186 average over 59 at-bats, and he won't be missed while out of action. Brendan Ryan and Aaron Miles will fill in while he is out, and both have more upside offensively than Izturis.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesWednesday 4/23, 10:02 AM CT
Cesar Izturis sustained a severe contusion when struck by a pitch below his right elbow during Tuesday's ninth inning against Milwaukee, according to The St. Louis Post-Dispatch. X-rays of Izturis' arm came back negative, but a compressed nerve caused him to lose feeling. The Cardinals do not expect him to be available for tonight's series opener against Pittsburgh, but GM John Mozeliak remained optimistic the club would not have to place him on the DL. The team is expected to call up Brendan Ryan from the minors, and sent down pitcher Brad Thompson.

Our View: Izturis was not providing much to fantasy owners with his .186 average over 59 at-bats, and he won't be missed while out of action. Brendan Ryan has more upside offensively however, and is worth a look if you need help at the shortstop position right now.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 4/22, 4:39 PM CT
Cesar Izturis left Tuesday's game against the Brewers in the ninth inning due to an elbow injury.

Our View: We're awaiting further word on the ailment. If Izturis is out for a while, the club would likely plug in Aaron Miles at short and either call up Rico Washington or activate Brendan Ryan.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesThursday 4/10, 2:19 PM CT
Cesar Izturis looks to fare well tonight against the Giants, according to MLB.com. Izturis is 4-for-7 lifetime against Kevin Correia, tonight's opposing hurler for San Francisco. This is good for Izturis as he needs to break out of a 4-for-23 slump.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 4/8, 2:23 PM CT
Cesar Izturis has a good track record against Shawn Chacon, today's opposing pitcher for Houston, according to MLB.com. Izturis has been moved to the leadoff spot in the Cardinals' order, and is batting 7-for-24 over his career against Chacon, with three doubles.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 4/8, 7:14 AM CT
Cesar Izturis has been moved up to the leadoff spot, according to MLB.com. Manager LaRussa noted, "I think it sets up well. He's been swinging the bat well right-handed, to me." Izturis is hitting .250 over 16 at-bats, with five walks, and he will have a chance to score a solid number of runs in the Cardinals' offense if he holds on to his spot at the top of the order.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesMonday 3/24, 8:53 AM CT
The Cardinals, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, have been defensively challenged much of the spring. In Sunday's game, however, the team showed promise. They made six stellar fielding plays in the 14-4 win over the Mets, including four by much-maligned shortstop Cesar Izturis . Izturis short-hopped three smashes and made a brilliant play on a high bounder over third baseman Aaron Miles' head to get Luis Castillo in the first inning. Izturis "put on a show," La Russa said. "That was a very special performance." Izturis needed this showing as he will not get innings for his hitting prowess, and at this point in the season, the Cardinals starting pitching needs players who will have their back on the field, not in the batters box. Izturis has some value in deep NL-only formats, but he will make the final cut for his glove, which won't assist fantasy managers.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesSaturday 3/8, 9:55 PM CT
In a game best described as disgusting, Cesar Izturis did little to help the cause for St. Louis and provide hope looking forward. Shelled in a 14-run loss (20-6) to the Dodgers, Izturis committed two of three errors in a seven-run third inning. Izturis ended with four errors in seven games and has just two hits in 20 at-bats this spring. Having joined the Cardinals in the offseason after shortstop David Eckstein signed with the Blue Jays, it was thought the defense would be the shining aspect of Izturis' game. Guess again. Brendan Ryan, who replaced Izturis in the fifth inning Saturday, is also vying for the shortstop job. "I'm not too concerned about (Izturis') defense," manager Tony La Russa said. "I've watched Izturis move. His hands show me he's a defensive player. I think we're going to be an improved defensive club."
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesFriday 11/30, 12:24 PM CT
The Cardinals have signed free agent Cesar Izturis to a one-year contract. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed. Izturis hit .258 last season in 110 games split between the Cubs and the Pirates.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesFriday 11/16, 5:40 PM CT
The Pirates declined their 2008, $5.45 million option on Cesar Izturis Friday. They instead opted to pay a $300,000 buyout. There won't be many teams looking to give Izturis an everyday job next year, but he could sign on somewhere to serve in a utility role.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesFriday 9/21, 4:44 PM CT
Cesar Izturis left Friday's game in the fourth inning with irritation in his right elbow, according to the AP. He was replaced by Matt Kata. The severity of Izturis' injury isn't clear.
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesSaturday 9/23, 6:46 AM CT
Cesar Izturis said yesterday that he doubts he'll return to action this season, according to the Daily Southtown. He's dealing with a tight right hamstring. "There is a big bruise back there," Izturis said. "They tried to take all the blood out of there. I don't think I will be playing any more this year. I just want to get healthy for next year."
Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesWednesday 9/20, 6:46 AM CT
It's not clear if Cesar Izturis will risk aggravating his tight right hamstring by playing again this season, according to the Chicago Tribune. However, Cubs trainer Mark O'Neal said the club doesn't expect this to be a recurring issue next season. "We don't anticipate this is going to be anything that lingers," O'Neal said.

Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 8/22, 5:20 PM CT

Cesar Izturis, SS, Baltimore OriolesFriday 8/18, 10:05 PM CT
Cesar Izturis will likely miss Saturday's game after leaving Friday's contest with a sore hamstring, according to the AP. It is the same injury that has nagged him all season. "It's a little bit sore, nothing big," said Izturis.
