Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 10/3, 9:11 AM CT
An x-ray on Barry Zito's pitching elbow revealed no structural damage after it was hit by an Adrian Gonzalez line-drive on Friday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: Great news for Zito, who just completed his first relatively good season since signing his monster contract three years ago. In 33 starts in 2009, he went 10-13 with a 4.03 ERA. Nowhere near Cy Young numbers, but also nowhere near the pathetic production he contributed in the first two years of his year seven contract with the Giants.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 10/3, 12:08 AM CT
Barry Zito only allowed one earned run on three hits over 5.1 innings in Friday's 7-2 win at San Diego. He had two walks with six strikeouts.

Our View: The game was tied at 1-1 when Zito exited, so he was forced to settle for a no-decision for his solid performance. He trimmed his ERA to 4.03, and allowed two or less earned runs in six of his last nine starts.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 9/26, 6:43 PM CT
Barry Zito got picked apart by the Cubs on Saturday. He was touched for four runs on six hits and five walks over just four innings in the 6-2 loss.

Our View: Zito was brilliant against the Rockies on September 15th, but has laid an egg in his past two starts. He's given up eight runs and eight walks in his last 8.1 innings.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 9/16, 12:23 AM CT
Barry Zito pitched seven dominant innings and struck out nine on Tuesday night in a Wild Card showdown with the Rockies. He allowed just two runs on five hits and a walk and earned his tenth win in the Giants 10-2 blowout.

Our View: He's now 2-0 with just three earned runs in 28.1 innings against the Rockies this season and has fanned 24 against nine walks. Looks like he's the Giants secret weapon against Colorado.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 9/9, 5:55 PM CT
Barry Zito allowed three runs in five innings on Wednesday, an insurmountable total for San Francisco's anemic offense, as the Giants lost 4-2 to the Padres at home.

Our View: After three straight "quality" outings to end August, Zito has now gone just nine combined innings in his two September starts, posting a 6.00 ERA.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 9/4, 10:48 PM CT
Barry Zito struggled with his control on Friday, but the Giants managed to outlast the Brewers to pick up a 3-2 win. Zito lasted only four innings and allowed two runs on three hits while walking five and striking out five.

Our View: Zito only allowed two runs, but his pitch count was high due to the five walks and five strikeouts. Overall, he has been very good in the second half this season and he should be considered a decent fantasy option down the stretch.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 8/29, 10:57 PM CT
Barry Zito pitched 8.1 dynamite innings of one-run ball for the Giants on Saturday night, helping them to a 5-3 win, and bringing them to just one game behind Colorado for the National League wild card.

Our View: The oft-maligned Zito has actually been one of the best pitchers in baseball since the All-Star break this season, going 4-2 with a 1.56 ERA in nine starts. His full season ERA now rests at 3.94.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 8/19, 10:28 PM CT
Barry Zito threw six shutout innings on Wednesday, but he did not factor into the decision as the Giants beat the Reds 1-0. Zito allowed only two hits while striking out four and walking one in the game.

Our View: Zito was outstanding tonight, so it is unfortunate that he didn't pick up the win. He has been much better this year than last, but he is still far from a dominant fantasy pitcher. NL-only leaguers should already own him, and deeper mixed leagers should give him a look as well.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 8/14, 8:37 PM CT
Barry Zito took his 11th loss of the season at Citi Field on Friday night, allowing three runs in five innings, as the Giants lost 3-0.

Our View: Baseball's most expensive mistake has now lost at least 11 games in each of the last three seasons. He has an acceptable 4.44 ERA, and decent 1.35 WHIP, but the Giants, and you, should be getting better returns from the former Cy Young winner.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 8/8, 6:31 PM CT
Barry Zito held the Reds to just two runs on three hits and a pair of walks over six innings on Saturday. He struck out four and earned his eighth win of the season.

Our View: Zito is finally earning his bloated paychecks this season. He has an un-Zito like ERA of 4.40 and has now racked up five quality starts in a row. He's hot now, so it's as good a time as any to get him in your lineup.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 8/2, 8:39 PM CT
Barry Zito looked sharp against a loaded Phillies' lineup on Sunday. He allowed just two earned runs on six hits over six innings and earned his seventh win of the season.

Our View: Zito struck out five and walked (wait for it), zero. Starts like this out of Zito don't come along very often, so if you actually had him in against the Phillies, pat yourself on the back.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 7/29, 12:33 AM CT
Barry Zito did not factor into the decision on Tuesday as the Giants beat the Pirates by a score of 3-2. Zito went 5.2 innings and allowed one run on nine hits while walking two and striking out six.

Our View: Zito was good again tonight, and he also limited the walks to two in this outing. He is starting to look like a guy who could help out a fantasy rotation, but proceed with caution as it is still Barry Zito.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 7/23, 3:41 PM CT
Barry Zito had a surprisingly dominant start on Thursday. He held the Braves to just one run on three hits over seven innings. The southpaw fanned six and earned the win, but his only blemish was the five free passes he handed out.

Our View: Zito is now 6-10 and since rumors started that he was going to be bumped from the rotation, or possibly even released, he's pitched very well. The five walks on Thursday were a step back, but just three runs allowed in his last 13.1 innings is nothing to shake a stick at when you're talking about Barry Zito.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 7/18, 9:13 PM CT
Barry Zito only allowed two earned runs on six hits over 6.1 innings in Saturday's 2-0 loss at Pittsburgh. He had no walks and four strikeouts.

Our View: Zito had a solid outing, but was unfortunately dealt his 10th of the season due to no run support from his teammates. He bounced back well from his last start, when was lit up for nine earned runs against San Diego.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 7/12, 9:09 PM CT
Barry Zito was embarrassed by a light-hitting Padre lineup on Sunday. He allowed nine runs on ten hits over just 4.1 innings. The Giants fell10-4 and Zito dropped to 5-9 on the season.

Our View: Zito looked like the pitcher of old earlier this season, but the wheels have recently come off. After a 3.35 ERA for the month of May he posted a 5.81 mark on June and is currently suffering through a 7.41 ERA this month. It might be time to send him to the bench.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 7/7, 11:27 PM CT
Barry Zito had by far his best start of the season on Tuesday, allowing just four hits (and no runs) in 8.1 innings, breezing through the Marlins lineup for his fifth victory.

Our View: Zito is definitely not the same pitcher he was in 2007 and 2008, but also isn't back at the high level he pitched at during his A's years. He is usually a strong second-half pitcher, however, and is definitely worth a flier if you are in need of pitching help.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 7/2, 8:57 PM CT
Barry Zito was rocked for five earned runs on five hits over a mere 4.1 innings of work in Thursday's 5-2 loss at St. Louis. He issued three walks and fired seven strikeouts.

Our View: Zito falls to 4-8 and his ERA climbs to 4.82. He has one win over his last four starts, and allowed four or more earned runs twice over the span. He will remain an unstable fantasy outing for his next trip to the mound.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 6/21, 7:19 PM CT
Barry Zito only gave up two earned runs on two hits over seven innings in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Rangers at AT&T Park. He had four walks and eight strikeouts, and all of the damage came on a two-run homer by Andruw Jones.

Our View: Zito is now 3-1 over four starts in June, despite a poor 6.10 ERA. He should remain active in NL-only leagues for his next battle.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 6/16, 12:10 AM CT
Barry Zito struggled in Monday's 9-7 loss to the Angels at AT&T Park, as he gave up seven earned runs on 10 hits over a mere 3.2 innings of work. He had no walks and three strikeouts.

Our View: Zito had his two-game winning streak snapped, and suffered his worst loss of the season. He has only pitched 13.2 innings over his last three starts, and should only be considered for NL-only leagues for his next trip to the mound.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 6/5, 10:22 PM CT
Barry Zito enjoyed a strong outing in Friday's 2-1 win at Florida, as he only gave up one earned run on four hits over five innings. He had three walks and three strikeouts.

Our View: He claimed his second win of the season, and snapped a four-game losing streak. He will remain an unstable fantasy option for his next outing.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 5/30, 11:27 PM CT
Barry Zito issued three earned runs on 10 hits over 6.2 innings in Saturday's 6-2 loss to the Cardinals at AT&T Park. He had two walks with six strikeouts.

Our View: Zito has lost four straight starts, and only has one win this season. His lone win came at Los Angeles on May 8.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 5/24, 8:16 PM CT
Barry Zito lost his fifth game of the season on Sunday. He allowed five runs on five hits and five walks and struck out five in 6.1 innings of the Giants' 5-4 loss to Seattle.

Our View: Zito has been much improved this season, but he can't seem to win. He's now 1-5 on the year, but has an un-Zito-like 4.02 ERA. Poor guy.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 5/19, 11:46 PM CT
Barry Zito was the tough-luck loser on Tuesday as the Giants fell to the Padres 2-1. Zito went eight innings and allowed two runs on five hits while walking four and striking out three.

Our View: Tough break for a guy who should be used to it by now. Zito was very good, but his offense just couldn't come through for him. Zito has his ERA down to 3.62 this season, which is impressive, but his record still sits at 1-4.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 5/13, 6:15 PM CT
Barry Zito got knocked around a bit on Wednesday, allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out five, but took the loss as the Giants fell 6-3 to the Nationals.

Our View: Despite having a poor outing today, Zito has been surprisingly effective this season. Even with the four runs he allowed today his ERA is still under 4.00 on the year (3.89). He doesn't strike out many hitters, but still has more fantasy value right now than he's had in a long time.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 5/9, 12:34 AM CT
Barry Zito had another solid start on Friday and finally earned his first win of the season. He scattered eight hits and two walks over six innings and allowed just one run in the Giants' 3-1 win over the Dodgers.

Our View: Zito has showed flashes of his old self this season and has now put together four solid starts in a row. His ERA is down to 3.57 and he hasn't pitched poorly since his second start of the season. He still doesn't rack up the Ks, but he's becoming a startable fantasy pitcher once again.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 5/3, 7:51 PM CT
Barry Zito was lights out on Sunday. He tossed seven shutout innings and allowed just two hits and one walk in the Giants' ten-inning, 1-0 win over the Rockies. He struck out four, but did not factor in the decision.

Our View: This was Zito's second brilliant outing of the season. Unfortunately his other three weren't very good, which explains his 3.99 ERA. Sunday's start did drop it over a full run, but Zito is too inconsistent to be considered a positive fantasy performer.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 4/22, 5:37 PM CT
Barry Zito threw seven shutout innings while allowing only six hits and striking out five in the Giants 1-0 win over the Padres on Wednesday. He got a no-decision on the afternoon.

Our View: Zito had given up 10 runs in his first nine innings this season, but clearly found something that was working for him today. Perhaps it was the fact that Pablo Sandoval caught him today. Zito was 3-0 with a 3.21 ERA over five starts that Sandoval caught in 2008. He did not walk a single batter in the game, and while we're happy for his performance today, we don't recommend running out and picking him up.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 3/31, 8:24 PM CT
Barry Zito put together a quality start on Tuesday as he went seven innings and allowed three runs on six hits and no walks. he earned the win and is now 3-1 on the spring.

Our View: Despite two recent productive outings, Zito is still a fantasy nightmare and should be steered clear of. No one in this stratosphere is predicting any kind of bounce-back season.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 3/27, 12:08 AM CT
Barry Zito allowed three earned runs on seven hits and a walk over five inning, but struck out a surprising seven batters.

Our View: The seven strikeouts are sure to be an anomaly since his strikeout totals have dipped every year for the past three seasons down to just 120 last year (6.00 K/9). Don't expect much out of Zito this season. He's likely done as far as fantasy owners are concerned.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 3/20, 7:03 PM CT
Barry Zito allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits in six innings of work Friday against the White Sox.

Our View: Zito looked unimpressive again on Friday, though his defense didn't exactly help him out. He also walked a batter and struck out three.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 3/15, 10:05 PM CT
Barry Zito lasted five innings in Sunday's 11-3 loss to the Royals, but purely for purposes of getting some work in. He was clobbered for 10 hits, two home runs, and six runs to go with three walks and no strikeouts.

Our View: Ugh. Sadly, it looks like it will be more of the same from this former Cy Young winner this season. Despite a decent September in 2008, he still ended the campaign with a career-worst ERA (5.15) and a career-low innings-pitched (180).
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 3/4, 11:03 PM CT
Barry Zito had a pretty brutal outing on Wednesday, allowing three runs on a walk and four hits in 2.2 innings. He did strikeout a pair of batters.

Our View: Zito is looking like the pitcher that the Giants have had for the last couple of years again. He only won 10 games last year and shouldn't be expected to do much more than that this year.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 2/28, 9:11 PM CT
Barry Zito had a decent start on Saturday, going two innings while allowing just one walk. He also struck out a pair.

Our View: Zito has been a major disappointment after he signed his $100+ million deal, but perhaps the Giants can get some value later on in this contract.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 2/20, 7:14 AM CT
Barry Zito displayed great control on the first day that pitchers threw to live hitters in camp, according to the SF Chronicle. Catcher Bengie Molina said, "Lincecum threw great and Zito was amazing. Zito had control. Both of them, their control was amazing for the first time out."

Our View: This is encouraging news, but Zito's velocity has been on the decline for the past few seasons, and he only pitched 180 innings in 2008. He could bounce back this season, but should only be considered as a flier in the late rounds to be safe.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 2/1, 9:28 AM CT
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that pitcher Barry Zito is confident that his offseason workout program will translate into success on the mound this season.

Our View: In two seasons with the Giants, Zito is 21-30 over 65 starts. He failed to reach 200 innings in either season. It is possible that Zito rebounds, but we'll have to see a very impressive spring before we are counted among the faithful.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 11/14, 3:05 PM CT
Barry Zito's mother has passed away Thursday after a battle with a brief illness, according to the Mercury News.

Our View: His mother, Roberta Jean Rosser Zito, was 65. We wish Zito and his family well in his time of mourning.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 9/25, 11:48 PM CT
Barry Zito tossed eight strong innings on Thursday against the Rockies but was still handed his 17th loss of the season as the home team lost 3-1.

Our View: One of baseball's highest paid pitchers ends the season 10-17 with a 5.15 ERA. In his defense, his second half was fairly decent.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 9/14, 8:35 PM CT
Barry Zito continued to frustrate his owners by allowing six runs, five earned, over 4.2 innings on Sunday. On the afternoon Zito struck out only one batter while walking five in the no-decision.

Our View: In four of his last five starts Zito kept the Giants in the game by allowing three or fewer earned runs, but today his control eluded him and led to the poor results including his highest walk total in six starts. He remains nothing more than a risky end of the rotation play.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 9/3, 7:08 PM CT
Barry Zito pitched eight strong innings of two-run ball Wednesday to help the Giants beat the Rockies 9-2.

Our View: Zito rebounded nicely from his last start as he only gave up two earned runs on four hits Wednesday against the Rockies.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 8/23, 5:39 PM CT
Barry Zito put together a strong effort Saturday, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five over eight innings. He picked up his eighth win.

Our View: This is Zito's second straight terrific start. August has easily been his best month.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 8/18, 6:40 PM CT
Barry Zito tossed seven shutout innings Monday in a 5-0 win over the Braves. He allowed five hits and two walks while striking out three.

Our View: Zito has gone 7-8 after starting the year 0-7. He's still not usable in mixed leagues, but he's worth an NL-only roster spot.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 8/13, 9:59 PM CT
Barry Zito lost game number 15 on the season as he went 5.2 innings, allowing six earned runs on four hits and five walks in the team's loss to Houston.

Our View: Zito's nightmare of a season continues, and he now has 83 strikeouts compared to 80 walks on the year.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 8/9, 12:14 AM CT
Barry Zito struggled with the throwing quality strikes on Friday and he allowed six hits, three walks and five runs to the Dodgers in just five innings. Zito is now 6-14 on the year.

Our View: One start after dominating the Padres with eight scoreless innings, Zito returned to the form that Giants fans have become accustomed to by looking eminently hittable. Shockingly, Zito has produced a 1.74 WHIP over 121.2 innings.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 8/3, 9:08 AM CT
Giants LHP Barry Zito is giving fantasy owners more than a few facts to ponder due to a sudden rise in production off the mound, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Zito pitched eight scoreless innings last night, allowing just three hits in a 2-0 win over the San Diego Padres. The former Oakland star is now 3-1 over his last five starts despite a horrific start that has him at 13 losses on the season.

Our View: This is the first time Zito has pitched eight shutout innings since August 21, 2004, against Tampa Bay. In fact, Zito (6-13) hadn't thrown more than seven innings in any of his first 21 starts, and only once did he open with as many as six scoreless innings.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 8/3, 12:01 AM CT
Barry Zito hurled eight scoreless innings, with only three hits allowed, in Saturday's 2-0 win over the Padres, with four walks and five strikeouts.

Our View: Zito has 13 losses this season, but is now 3-1 over his last five starts. He should be in fantasy lineups for his next outing.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 7/27, 6:20 PM CT
Barry Zito walked five, gave up six hits and six earned runs in six innings against the Diamondbacks on Sunday. He picked up his 13th loss of the season.

Our View: The $126-million dollar man was 3-1 over his last five starts, but clearly did not have it on Sunday. His ERA is back up to 5.80.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 7/22, 11:57 PM CT
Barry Zito lasted six innings on Tuesday for his fifth win, this one over the Nationals. He struck out five while giving up seven hits and three walks.

Our View: Zito may have gotten the win but it wasn't pretty. Disregard his success until he strings together four or five straight quality starts.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 7/10, 3:26 PM CT
Barry Zito threw five innings, walking six batters but allowing only two earned runs in the Giants 7-3 loss to the New York Mets.

Our View: Zito did not figure into the decision, but his lack of control continues a trend in which he has walked over fiver batters per nine innings. He remains someone to avoid in fantasy leagues.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 7/5, 11:14 PM CT
Barry Zito pitched his most dominating game since become a Giant by striking out 10 Dodgers on his way to his first home victory of the season, 5-2 over the Dodgers.

Our View: This was Zito's first 10-K effort since 2006, and everyone of the punchouts was on a change up or curveball as he dazzled the Dodgers with an assortment of off-speed pitches that they simply couldn't square up. Believe it or not, over his last three starts Zito has 20 K, six BB and a 3.37 ERA and once again has the look of a pitcher who might actually be able to contribute to a winning fantasy squad.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 6/25, 8:54 PM CT
Barry Zito hurled his best game of the season on Wednesday as he was in total command of all his pitches holding the Indians to just one run in 6.2 innings for his third victory of the season.

Our View: The best news of the night might have been the zero in the walk column. It's only one night, but this was vintage Zito without a doubt.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 6/19, 10:42 PM CT
Barry Zito is on pace for 24 losses this season, and with 17 or 18 more starts, if he's permitted to stay in the rotation, he a lock to exceed his career high for defeats in a season (13).

Our View: This news isn't a revelation. The real surprise will be if the Giants allow him to remain in the rotation with his current form. Zito has zero value in all fantasy formats and it's time for the lefty to head to the minor leagues and try to reinvent himself.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 6/18, 4:12 PM CT
Barry Zito is still looking for his first win of the season at AT&T Park, where he was 0-6 with a 6.50 ERA in seven starts coming into today's game against the Tigers. Zito left after pitching just two innings against the Tigers, allowing five runs on five hits, walking four and striking out two.

Our View: The left-hander has only one win in his last 16 starts at San Francisco. At the time of this post the Giants were down 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning making it probable that Zito would lose his 11th game of the season, his seventh at home.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 6/8, 5:53 PM CT
San Francisco LHP Barry Zito earned a much-needed win today, helping his Giants to a 6-3 victory over Washington. Zito lasted just five innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Our View: The struggles for control continue, but Zito has two wins in his last four starts with 12 earned runs allowed over that span. It's not great by any means, but it is an improvement.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 6/4, 12:29 AM CT
Giants LHP Barry Zito has suffered his ninth loss of the season, pitching just 4 1/3 innings to allow six runs (five earned) on seven hits in the Giants 9-6 loss to the Mets. Zito surrendered five walks and earned just one strikeout.

Our View: Zito had shown a small sign of hope on May 23rd with a win over Florida, but tonight shows the damage will continue. He now carries 36 walks versus just 32 strikeouts on the season.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 5/29, 11:47 PM CT
Barry Zito hurled a quality start for the Giants allowing the D'backs three runs in six innings on Thursday night as he earned a no-decision.

Our View: Don't look now, but Zito has been a serviceable starter for the month of May as he hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his five starts. He isn't lighting the world on fire by any means, but he has given the Giants a chance to win each time out.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 5/23, 9:08 PM CT
Barry Zito finally got a whiff of the sweet smell of victory Friday, limiting the Marlins to one run on three hits and four walks while striking out five over 6 1/3 innings to pick up his first W of the year. He was 0-8 in his first nine outings.

Our View: Zito hasn't given up more than three runs in any start this month, though his WHIP (1.61) over that time has been very poor. He's not as bad as he's been for most of the year, but don't think this recent "hot" streak is a sign of things to come.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 5/17, 11:43 PM CT
Barry Zito, allowed two runs on eight hits, walked six and struck out four but was still the pitcher of record as the Giants lost 3-1 to the White Sox.

Our View: Zito became the first Giants pitcher to open a season with eight losses since Jesse Burkett in 1890.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 5/11, 6:57 PM CT
San Francisco left-hander Barry Zito (0-7) will try again for his first victory of the season Monday when the Giants face Astros ace Roy Oswalt in the opener of a four-game series with Houston.

Our View: Zito was effective in his first start on Wednesday after being sent to the bullpen. However, he was still the losing pitcher in a 3-1 defeat to the Pirates.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 5/7, 9:04 PM CT
In his first start in some time, San Francisco LHP Barry Zito suffered another loss but showed signs of improvement. Zito pitched five innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits with two walks versus five strike outs.

Our View: Zito now carries a record of 0-7 with an ERA of 6.95, and while the hope of once again working as a contributing member of the rotation is the goal, this is a noteworthy step in the right direction.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 5/6, 4:44 PM CT
Barry Zito will start against the Pirates on Wednesday, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Our View: Fantasy owners in daily lineup leagues might want to bump up their Pirates on Wednesday.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 5/3, 9:44 AM CT
Giants manager Bruce Bochy has informed reporters LHP Barry Zito will be working and available out of the bullpen today, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Concerns about Zito's health have circulated following the pitcher's removal from the starting rotation, but Bochy has assured reporters he is fine and will be working out of the pen today. "Barry is good to go," said Bochy. "We'll use him in long relief, and I'd say we'd use him earlier in game than later in games. It's just little adjustments we're making.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 5/2, 12:38 PM CT
According to the Giants' official website, Barry Zito, although he'll likely make multiple-inning appearances out of the bullpen, can benefit from the culture shock. Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti pointed out that mild-mannered Russ Ortiz, an 18-game winner in 1999, was demoted to the bullpen to begin the season's second half in 2000 after posting a 4-8 mark and a 6.92 ERA. Ortiz regained his starting spot when Joe Nathan injured his shoulder and won seven consecutive games on his way to a 14-12 finish.

Our View: When Zito returns to the rotation is still undetermined, but the team has yet to announce a starter for the Saturday, May 5, rotation spot next week.

According to ESPN.com, Barry Zito has been moved into the bullpen. The left-hander signed a seven-year deal with the team before last season, and is 0-6 a 7.53 ERA in his first six starts.

Our View: The Giants acknowledged they were considering sending Zito to the bullpen on Sunday, but made the move official today.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 4/28, 1:30 PM CT
Barry Zito could get demoted to the Giants' bullpen due to poor play as a starter, according to the Mercury News. Zito is 0-6 over six starts, with a 7.53 ERA and 1.95 WHIP. He could either get skipped in the rotation or move to the bullpen, and Manager Bruce Bochy stated, "We've got to do something. We can't keep doing what we're doing and getting what we're getting."

Our View: He is useless as a fantasy performer right now, and a move to the pen would not help his value, as he only has 11 strikeouts over 28.2 innings. Keep him benched until he proves he can be an effective starter again.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 4/27, 7:55 PM CT
Barry Zito , who is winless in his first six starts for the first time in his career, gave up eight runs and walked three on Sunday lasting three innings in the 10-1 loss to the Reds.

Our View: Rumor has it that after Sunday's performance the Giants have considered filing criminal charges against Zito. The San Fran starter was awarded a $126 million, seven-year deal over a year ago. The Giants decided his performances since that time classify as crimes, and ultimately Grand Theft.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 4/24, 8:32 AM CT
Barry Zito won't miss a start, according to the SF Chronicle. He is gravely struggling, as he is 0-5 with a 5.61 ERA and 1.79 WHIP, but pitching coach Dave Righetti said the team is not considering temporarily pulling him from the rotation and stated, "No, because who the hell is going to pitch? We're not that deep in starting pitching. Noah Lowry is hurting now and we're not that deep in Triple-A. We need Zito to pitch." The team is going to just let him ride out his slump, and hope he can get on track. Righetti also added that he has lost velocity on his pitches, and is in a "transition period in his career."

Our View: The Giants are going to stick with him, but you should not. Keep him on the bench if you have a more favorable option at the position, which won't be hard to find.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 4/23, 12:06 AM CT
San Francisco LHP Barry Zito continues to disappoint, picking up his FIFTH loss of the season as the Giants suffer the 4-5 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Zito lasted just 3 2/3 innings, throwing 79 pitches (44 strikes) to allow five runs (all earned) on six hits.

Our View: This was Zito's shortest outing thus far, though none have lasted past the sixth inning, and he now carries a walk-strike out ratio of 12-to-10.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 4/16, 12:50 PM CT
Barry Zito will be looking for his first win of the season tonight as he battles the Diamondbacks, according to MLB.com. Zito is currently 0-3 with a 4.50 ERA, and is 2-3 with a 2.73 ERA lifetime against Arizona.

Our View: He will duel with ace Brandon Webb, who is currently 3-0. It is not in his favor to notch his first win tonight.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 4/12, 12:13 AM CT
Barry Zito allowed four runs, though only one was earned, as he picked up his third loss in three starts on Friday. Zito again struggled to put away hitters with only two K in six innings, but he also was able to throw the ball in the strike zone as he walked just one batter, so this is a slightly encouraging outing, though certainly not an overly exciting one.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 4/7, 3:14 AM CT
Barry Zito allowed the Brewers to score in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings in Sunday's blowout 7-0 loss. The left-hander allowed eight hits and five runs (three earned), and walked two while striking out three. Zito is one more poor start from losing his mound control. The veteran southpaw was visibly frustrated in his second loss of the season.

Our View:

Barry Zito, who was the Giants major free agent signing during the 2006 offseason, allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings in the Monday loss to the Dodgers. Fantasy owners who were brave enough to place Zito in their mixed league starting lineup, will think twice next week. Zito has a second start this week at Milwaukee, a matchup that's no more favorable than today's against the Big Blue.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 3/24, 10:58 AM CT
Barry Zito may have rebounded from a poor start on Friday by allowing only two hits in 5.2 innings pitched, but the signs point to the left-hander not having what he once did. Entering Friday's start with one of the most shocking pitching lines of the spring, this according to the New York Times: a 14.92 earned run average, 21 hits, 10 walks and not one strikeout in 12 2/3 innings, covering 67 batters, his Friday start still isn't enough to warm to him. Zito's fastball has decreased several miles an hour --to a more hittable 84 -- and he doesn't trust his stuff enough to get ahead of hitters early in the count. Draft Zito, even as a late round bargain, offers far more risk, than upside.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 3/21, 7:06 PM CT
Barry Zito rebounded from a poor outing last time on the hill by allowing just two hits on 96 pitches in 5.2 scoreless innings against the White Sox on Friday. Zito is rounding into form with a 10.31 ERA...wait a second, that isn't good is it? Zito actually didn't have a strikeout until today, and while he professed to be unconcerned, the Giants probably wish they could void the contract that they signed Zito to last season. Too bad this isn't football.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 3/15, 8:28 PM CT
Barry Zito has been hot and cold throughout the spring and had another poor outing against Seattle on Saturday as he allowed seven runs on seven hits (2 home runs) over 5.1 innings, with four walks and no strikeouts. Zito went 11-13 in 2007 and will drop down draft boards if he doesn't fare better in his next start.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 3/5, 8:43 PM CT
Barry Zito worked three innings and allowed just one run in hurling for the Giants on Wednesday, though his team lost 3-1 to the Royals, according to MLB.com. Zito threw 39 pitches, allowing one homer to Ryan Shealy in the third inning. This was a significant improvement over Zito's last outing (giving up eight runs in 2/3 of an inning last Saturday), a good sign for fans and fantasy owners alike.

Since Barry Zito had tendintis in his wrist during the second half of last season, the Giants are being cautious with him this spring, according to the Contra Costa Times. To that end, he has yet to take batting practice this spring, though he recently began taking some dry cuts. "We're just being careful," manager Bruce Bochy said. Zito is slated to make his exhibition debut on Saturday.

Manager Bruce Bochy said just last week that he wasn't sure yet who would start for the Giants on opening day. But he's now apparently settled on Barry Zito over Matt Cain. "Matt is still young. He'll be an Opening Day pitcher," Bochy said in the San Francisco Chronicle. "This year, we just felt Zito should have that start. I think as much as anything this is something he earned with the way he pitched at the end of last season. Barry, he's accustomed to it. It makes sense to send him out there opening day." Cain is easily the superior fantasy option of the two hurlers, but the veteran usually gets the nod over the youngster in this kind of competition.

Barry Zito might not be the Giants' opening day starter this spring, according to the San Jose Mercury News. "I'll get with (pitching coach) Dave Righetti and we'll have that done pretty soon," manager Bruce Bochy said. "I'll answer that in Arizona." Zito is entering the second year of his monster $126 million contract after going 11-13 with a 4.53 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in his first season.
Barry Zito, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 2/17, 9:12 AM CT
Barry Zito overhauled his delivery during the offseason, but pitching coach Dave Righetti was skeptical about the changes, according to the Contra Costa Times. "We'll see how his groin feels tomorrow," Righetti said. "It'll wear him down. He's going to over-stride and it's going to be tough for him. He's a good athlete and he got himself in shape for it, so maybe it's all tied in together. He felt he needed to do something. But to me, it'll be about making his pitches. If he loses the curveball, which he could because he's throwing from a different angle now ... I'm not sure. ... His ball flight is going to be different, no doubt about that."

ESPN's Peter Gammons and SI.com are both reporting that Barry Zito has agreed to a seven-year, $126 million contract with the Giants. Zito's decision means that he will pitch in one of the best pitcher's parks in all of baseball, though he may be hurt by a suspect offense and bullpen.

The Rangers want to hear by this weekend whether Barry Zito will accept their contract offer, according to the Star-Telegram. "We've made a very strong offer. If we don't have agreement with his agent by this weekend, we will pursue other alternatives," owner Tom Hicks wrote in an email. The Mets, Giants and Mariners all are in the mix for Zito, and the Angels and Yankees still could get into the mix.

The Mets might not be willing to pay Barry Zito the kind of money he wants, according to the New York Post. The Mets reportedly think Zito should get a similar deal to what Roy Oswalt got (five years, $73 million), but Zito's agent, Scott Boras, may want something in the vicinity of seven years for $100 million.
