Our View: Cota has been sentenced under the guidelines of the the major league drug program despite his status as a minor league players, and league officials have not addressed why that is. Cota has claimed his innocence in a press statement put forth by the player's association, stating he believes the negative result of the test is the product of prescription medication he was told to take by doctors following shoulder surgery last season. The 29-year-old Cota played parts of the last seven seasons with Pittsburgh, hitting .233 with 12 home runs and 61 RBIs in 196 career games. He signed a minor league contract with Washington last November, was let go in mid-March and signed a minor league deal with the Rockies.
