Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 6/17, 8:49 AM CT
According to the Boston Globe, former Cy Young winner Eric Gagne pitched poorly in his first start for the Quebec Capitales of the Independent Can-Am League.

Our View: Gagne allowed five runs on nine hits and four walks over just 4.2 innings and never got up to 90 mph on the gun. Still, Gagne says he's determined to return to the Major Leagues, whether as a starter or reliever. We won't hold our breath.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 5/26, 6:18 PM CT
According to SLAM Sports, the Quebec Capitales of the Independent Can-Am League have signed former MLB reliever Eric Gagne.

Our View: Gagne is recovering from a tear in his rotator cuff and looks like he's working out the kinks in Canada. If he can prove he's healthy and effective once again, MLB scouts will undoubtedly come calling.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 3/8, 2:57 PM CT
Eric Gagne has been released by the Brewers, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View: An MRI recently revealed that Gagne has labrum and rotator cuff damage in his pitching shoulder. He was unable to pitch to convince the Brewers that he belongs in their bullpen. The club could bring him back if he improves enough to pitch down the road.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 3/6, 5:28 PM CT
Brewers assistant GM Gord Ash said Friday it would be "impossible" for Eric Gagne to land a spot on the major-league roster, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Gagne has an "out date" option in his minor-league contract with Milwaukee that allows him to elect to enter free agency if he does not make the major-league roster by Mar. 26.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 3/6, 12:43 PM CT
Eric Gagne is considering a surgical procedure to deal with the soreness in his shoulder, according to MLB.com.

Our View: This is the same injury that landed him on the DL last season. If Gagne cannot pitch, the Brewers cannot determine if he belongs in their bullpen.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 3/5, 12:23 PM CT
Eric Gagne's shoulder continues to act up and according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel will require an MRI Thursday.

Our View: Gagne has little value, even when healthy, as he has little hope of challenging Trevor Hoffman for the closer role.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 3/3, 1:18 PM CT
Eric Gagne is nursing a shoulder ailment, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He wants to pitch through the ailment, but the Brewers are not going to permit it.

Our View: There is no timetable as to when he will be cleared to resume throwing, hence hurting his odds of holding a spot in the Brewers' bullpen.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 2/25, 8:17 PM CT
MLB.com reports that reliever Eric Gagne is dealing with a strained calf. He is afew steps behind the other pitchers, but plans to throw live batting practice on Friday.

Our View: Gagne is on a minor-league deal, so these setbacks could cost him his roster spot. He doesn't sound very optimistic about his calf, and neither are we.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 2/19, 4:13 PM CT
Eric Gagne has decided not to participate in the World Baseball Classic, according to MLB.com.

Our View: This is a good move for Gagne, who is trying to grab a spot in the Brewers bullpen. Gagne had a 5.44 ERA in 50 appearances last season.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 2/19, 12:10 PM CT
Eric Gagne recently underwent laser eye surgery and he will no longer sport goggles on the mound, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View: It seems unlikely that the surgery will improve his control. Gagne walked 4.3 batters per nine innings last season, and he needs to lower that number if he hopes to be an important part of the Brewers' bullpen this season.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 2/18, 6:34 PM CT
Eric Gagne is unsure if he'll compete in the World Baseball Classic, according to the Brewers' official site.

Our View: Gagne, who signed a minor league deal with Milwaukee, might get more of a chance to impress team officials by playing in the Classic than by just competing in camp. The Brewers don't seem to have a problem with him competing in the Classic, so it's probably more likely than not that he'll play in it.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 2/17, 3:33 PM CT
Eric Gagne has signed a minor league deal with the Brewers and has been invited to spring camp, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. The terms of the deal are yet to be disclosed.

Our View: Gagne won't likely push Trevor Hoffman for the closer's job, but could compete for the setup role.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 1/28, 8:10 PM CT
The Star-Tribune reports that the Twins have cut off talks with reliever Eric Gagne. The team will supposedly seek out eighth-inning help through a trade.

Our View: We're not sure what Gagne was asking for, but it was probably well-above his market value. He posted a 5.44 ERA in 46.1 innings while making $10 million last season with the Brewers.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 1/25, 8:07 AM CT
The Rangers remain interested in Eric Gagne, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: The Rangers' top competition to reel him in is Minnesota, who would like to employ him as a setup man behind closer Joe Nathan with Pat Neshek expected to miss the 2009 campaign while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 1/23, 9:10 AM CT
Eric Gagne's deal with the Twins is being held up by a disagreement regarding the length of the contract, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View: Gagne's agent (Scott Boras) is seeking a multi-year deal, but the Twins only want to offer one. Gagne is only needed as a one-year stopgap as a setup man while Pat Neshek recovers from Tommy John surgery.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 1/22, 11:52 AM CT
Reliver Eric Gagne and the Twins are closing in on a deal, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Our View: The team clearly does not want him to close games. He was an unmitigated disaster doing that in Milwaukee last season, and will only be a middle reliever with the Twins.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 1/19, 8:58 PM CT
The Star Tribune reports that a source within the Twins organization says the team is nearing a deal with reliever Eric Gagne. Another source indicates that the team is still exploring other bullpen options.

Our View: Gagne would contend to be Joe Nathan's setup man if he signs with the team. He did not fare very well last season in Milwaukee when he posted a 5.44 ERA and 1.46 WHIP.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 1/16, 7:05 AM CT
The Twins have inquired about Eric Gagne, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View: There is nothing wrong with elite closer Joe Nathan, but the club could use a stop-gap for setup man Pat Neshek, who could miss the entire 2009 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 1/5, 10:37 AM CT
Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman reports that the Texas Rangers are entertaining the idea of bringing back relief pitcher Eric Gagne.

Our View: Gagne endured a frustrating season in 2008 with the Brewers, failing to register a win, saving only 10 games, and posting an ERA well over five.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 12/1, 10:33 AM CT
The Brewers are not expected to offer Type-B free agent Eric Gagne salary arbitration, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View: The Brewers would not want to get stuck with him if he accepted an arbitration offer, as he was a disappointment in 2008 with a 1.47 WHIP. It was previously reported that Gagne is on the Rangers' radar.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 11/11, 8:17 PM CT
With pitching coach Mike Maddux now in Texas, the Rangers are the likely favorites to sign Eric Gagne, according to Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown.

Our View: Don't bet on Gagne being the closer (Frank Francisco is the favorite for that gig). His numbers were ugly overall in 2008, but he did pitch well over the last two months.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 9/25, 3:56 PM CT
Brewers reliever Eric Gagne purchased 5,000 tickets to Thursday's game against the Pirates, and will be giving them away free of charge to fans, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "No matter what happens over these next four games, I want everyone to know that I think the world of Brewers fans," Gagne said in a statement.

Our View: He may think the world of Brewers fans, but they probably don't think the world of him. He signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the team, and promptly started blowing saves left and right. He has a 5.56 ERA on the year, and has allowed 11 home runs in 45.1 innings.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 9/1, 5:54 PM CT
Eric Gagne blew his sixth save of the year on his way to falling to 4-3 for the Brewers. Gagne allowed three runs on four hits, including a two run blast to Carlos Delgado to lose the game.

Our View: Gagne has been one of the biggest busts of the year as he can't even function in a setup role (6.81 ERA). You think that the Brewers might want their $10 million back? We know fantasy leaguers want their $10 back that they spent on him on draft day.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 8/29, 7:31 PM CT
Eric Gagne has returned to the Brewers' bullpen Friday after attending to the birth of his son, according to Brewers.com.

Our View: He should be available to pitch tonight against Pittsburgh.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 7/31, 4:09 PM CT
Milwaukee reliever Eric Gagne faced one hitter and wound up getting ejected after throwing behind Cubs outfielder Jim Edmonds, who had hit two home runs on the day.

Our View: The first three pitches of the at-bat were inside, and the fourth was a foot behind Edmonds. Brewers manager Ned Yost made a lame attempt to defend his hurler, but the intent was obvious.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 7/8, 10:34 PM CT
Eric Gagne made his third appearance on Tuesday since coming off the DL with shoulder tendinitis. He allowed just one hit in his only inning of work.

Our View: Gagne is 3-for-3 in successful bullpen appearances since his return.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 7/5, 8:49 PM CT
Eric Gagne was the beneficiary of offense on Saturday as he worked a scoreless ninth inning and then watched his teammates score the winning run off the Pirates to give him his second victory of the season.

Our View: Gagne has now appeared twice without allowing a run since returning from injury, and with the Brewers struggles in the pen there could be some consideration of moving Gagne back into the closers role soon.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 6/29, 6:50 PM CT
The Brewers activated reliever Eric Gagne from the 15-day DL after Sunday's loss to the Twins, the AP reports. Manager Ned Yost did not say what role Gagne would have. He was out due to right rotator cuff tendinitis.

Our View: Salomon Torres has pitched well enough to keep the closer's role, but Yost showed tremendous loyalty to Gagne earlier this year. Fantasy owners should stick with Torres until we're clear about the roles.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 6/29, 10:06 AM CT
Eric Gagne threw a 30-pitch bullpen session on Saturday and could be activated from the DL soon, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Gagne will be looked at today to see how he feels, and if there isn't an issue, he will likely be back in the Brewers' bullpen as a late-inning, set-up reliever. Manager Ned Yost said, "It was a pretty good workout so we'll see how he rebounds from that. I'm looking for command and life on his pitches. He had life on his pitches. Command on his fastball was decent. He's looking like he's real, real close. We'll see if he passes his tests and comes back feeling good. Then we'll go from there."

Our View: Gagne is feeling good and as close to 100% as he is going to get. He won't likely hold much fantasy value as a setup man in standard leagues.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 6/26, 10:09 PM CT
Eric Gagne had a rough go of it in his second rehab start on Thursday, according to Scout.com. Gagne had a strikeout but then hit the second batter, allowed a hit, a walk, threw a wild pitch, had a another strikeout and then allowed another hit.

Our View: Gagne clearly isn't ready to be activated if he struggles this much in a minor league outing. He is scheduled to join the club on Friday, but we wouldn't be at all shocked to see him make another appearance or two to find his release point.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 6/24, 11:12 PM CT
Eric Gagne made his first rehab start on Tuesday, according to MLB.com. He threw a one-two-three 14 pitch inning against Triple-A Memphis.

Our View: The Brewers have indicated that the closer could be activated as soon as Friday, however, he will not immediately take over the closing duties from Solomon Torres.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 6/21, 5:49 PM CT
Eric Gagne passed his final test today be throwing a live BP session Saturday will report to Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday for a minor league rehab assignment, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He will pitch for Nashville on Tuesday and Thursday before rejoining the Brewers next weekend in Minnesota.

Our View: Gagne will not return to the closer role, as that gig will continue to be held by Salomon Torres.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 6/19, 2:56 PM CT
Eric Gagne, who is recovering from right rotator cuff tendinitis, threw another solid bullpen session on Thursday, according to MLB.com. Gagne pitched at about 90% of full strength on Thursday morning and is scheduled to throw a simulated game to hitters on Saturday at Miller Park. If that goes favorably, Gagne said he would travel Monday to Nashville for a Triple-A rehab appearance on Tuesday at home and Thursday at Round Rock, Texas. He could then travel on June 27 to Minnesota, where the Brewers begin a series against the Twins.

Our View: Gagne stated that he will return June 27, but will not unseat Salomon Torres from the closer's role. He was struggling as a closer prior to landing on the DL, and will hold little to no fantasy value while serving as a setup man.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 6/17, 5:44 PM CT
Eric Gagne threw his second bullpen session Tuesday since going on the DL with rotator cuff tendinitis, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He said the session went well, and he will have another one on Thursday, followed by live batting practice on Saturday. He will then go out on a minor league rehab assignment.

Our View: Assuming all goes well, it sounds like Gagne could be back by next weekend or so. But will he have his closer gig upon his return? Saloman Torres has made a case to keep the role.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 6/15, 4:59 PM CT
Eric Gagne, who is recovering from right rotator cuff tendinitis, threw about 25 pitches off a mound on Sunday, according to the AP. He did not speak after the session, but said he felt about 90% healthy on Saturday.

Our View: There remains no timetable for his return, but is likely a couple of weeks away.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 6/8, 9:26 AM CT
Eric Gagne played catch Saturday from about 120 feet at about 75 percent effort, according to MLB.com. He'll have to be up to about 95 percent before throwing off a mound. "I'm just trying to get my strength back," said Gagne, who is coming back from rotator cuff tendinitis.

Our View: Well, it's progress. However, Gagne is likely still a couple weeks away, and he might not have his old job when he returns, as Salomon Torres has pitched well.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 6/7, 9:47 PM CT
Eric Gagne continues to throw off flat ground in his attempt to comeback from a right shoulder strain, according to MLB.com. "I'm just trying to get my strength back," Gagne said.

Our View: Gagne threw at 75% from 120 feet on Saturday, and he estimated that he would have to be throwing at about 95% before taking the hill. Best case scenario for Gagne would likely have him back in about two weeks.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 6/2, 7:58 PM CT
Eric Gagne has been playing catch, but he has yet to throw off a mound. He won't be ready to return when he's eligible to come off the DL on Thursday, the AP reports. Gagne is out due to right rotator cuff tendinitis.

Our View: The report didn't give us a good sense of when Gagne will return, only that it wouldn't be this week. He probably needs to chuck a few off a mound and show good stuff before the Brewers are willing to concede a timeline. Salomon Torres will continue to close games, at least until Gagne is ready.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 5/31, 7:36 PM CT
Eric Gagne, who is on the DL with right rotator cuff tendinitis, has taken a temporary leave from the team to attend to his ailing wife in Arizona, according to MLB.com. His wife Valerie is six months pregnant with the couple's fourth child, but manager Ned Yost said complications in the pregnancy have forced Valerie into a hospital stay. Yost added, "He's going to Maryvale in the morning on Sunday to get all his rehab work done and stuff. He'll be back Monday or Tuesday at the latest."

Our View: Yost also noted that he doesn't know if Gagne would be prepared to return from the DL when he becomes eligible on Thursday. Gagne personally did not expect to miss more than the 15 day minimum on the DL.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 5/26, 10:36 AM CT
Eric Gagne, who is on the DL with right rotator cuff tendinitis, said he will not need the full 15 days to recover, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Gagne said he wouldn't throw for a few days to allow a cortisone injection he received to take full effect, and he added, "There's no reason to rush it, now that I'm on the DL. I'll wait about three days and see how it feels. I've got plenty of time now."

Our View: This is good news for Gagne owners, but he is still having a poor season with a 6.98 ERA and 2.02 WHIP over 19.1 innings.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 5/23, 6:48 PM CT
The Brewers placed Eric Gagne on the DL Friday with rotator cuff tendinitis, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He received a cortisone shot Thursday and will not throw for a couple more days, at which point he will be re-examined. Tim Dillard was summoned from Triple-A Nashville to replace him on the roster.

Our View: This is probably actually good for Gagne owners. The closer doesn't need to rush back, and at least you can get a replacement for him in the meantime. Salomon Torres is expected to handle most of the save chances while Gagne is out.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 5/22, 6:20 PM CT
Eric Gagne has rotator cuff tendinitis and as a result he will be out indefinitely, according to the Associated Press. Gagne received a cortisone shot and will not throw for three days at which point he will once again be re-examined. Currently the Brewers don't plan on placing Gagne on the DL.

Our View: This is as good of news as could be expected considering how Gagne has been doing of late, but the bottom line is that Gagne likely will be out of action for at least a week and quite possibly longer. In the meantime Salomon Torres will continue to be the team's top option to finish off games though he has by no means locked up that role.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 5/21, 6:09 PM CT
Eric Gagne has flown back to Milwaukee and will be shut down until further notice, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. The reliever has a stiff right shoulder and will be examined by team trainers and Dr. William Raasch to decide what the best course of action is. "It's all in the front of the shoulder," Gagne said. "Now we're just waiting to see. It's just one of those things (where) you usually warm up and it goes away, but it was getting tighter and tighter (Tuesday)." Manager Ned Yost said the Brewers will use a committee at closer while Gagne is out, though Soloman Torres will get most of the chances.

Our View: The way Gagne has pitched, perhaps a little time off will do he and the Brewers some good.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 5/21, 3:00 PM CT
Eric Gagne entered Tuesday’s battle against the Pirates in the ninth inning with a comfortable 7-0 lead but could not finish the game, according to the AP. He allowed two runs on two hits and left complaining of tightness in his shoulder. Gagne said, "It wasn’t really pain, it was just stiffness. It feels like I slept on it or something. It just wouldn’t get warm."

Our View: Gagne has blown five saves in 15 opportunities this season, and holds a poor 6.98 ERA and 2.02 WHIP over 19.1 innings. He won't be missed that much by fantasy owners if forced to miss time, but we will keep you posted on his status.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 5/14, 8:46 AM CT
Manager Ned Yost confirms that Eric Gagne is back in the closer's role after one day off. "I just think that he just needed a day to get away from closing," Yost informs the AP. "I believe and I trust in my guys, and Eric Gagne’s my closer."

Our View: Too bad fantasy owners believed and trusted in you, Mr. Yost. We'll see if Gagne can justify the faith by getting his ERA below five in the coming weeks.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 5/13, 10:08 PM CT
Eric Gagne earned his 10th save on Tuesday night as he allowed one hit, one walk and no runs in the ninth inning just three days after he was demoted from the position.

Our View: So much for the team going in another direction. This is one of the most infuriating aspects of fantasy baseball, that of the less than truthful manager who says one thing but does something else. The bullpen is a mess in Milwaukee, so they really need Gagne to come through. So much for those waiver wire claims for Salomon Torres, Gulliermo Mota and Brian Shouse.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 5/12, 8:09 PM CT
Eric Gagne did an about face on Monday and stated that he was indeed ready to go back into the closers role, though the team is still not certain, according to MLB.com. Manager Ned yost said the team will continue to go with a closer-by-committee approach for now.

Our View: The report hints that Gange may have been tipping his pitches, which might explain some of his struggles, but it wouldn't explain 11 BB in 15.2 innings. The team will likely return to Gagne as the closer at some point in the very near future, but whether or not he is successful is anyone's guess at this point.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 5/11, 12:28 PM CT
Eric Gagne has been removed as the Brewers' closer, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports. "He probably needs a little bit of a mental break," manager Ned Yost says. "He's really pushing himself really hard and taking it really, really hard. We'll probably just mix and match." Yost did not point to a single option as a replacement, saying he would work the ninth inning based on matchups. The club believes Gagne might have a flaw in his mechanics that they can easily correct.

Our View: Fantasy owners should hold onto Gagne if they can afford the roster spot, as it seems like the Brewers still want him to be the closer at some point.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 5/11, 9:23 AM CT
Eric Gagne doesn't make the decisions, but it sounds like he'd pull himself from the closer's role if it was his choice. "I don't deserve that ninth inning right now. It's very simple," he tells the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "It's embarrassing." Gagne owns a 6.89 ERA, 1.85 WHIP, and .400 BAA.

Our View: We're waiting for a public announcement about Gagne losing his role. The Brewers have not said who will take over his duties (if they do make a change), but we figure Salomon Torres and Guillermo Mota will be considered.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 5/6, 5:46 PM CT
Manager Ned Yost reiterated on Tuesday that the Brewers will stick with Eric Gagne as their closer. In fact, Yost says it's "ridiculous" to even talk about a change. "This is a guy who has had a lot of success in this role," Yost tells the AP. "You allow him the time to work through it." Gagne owns nine saves, but he also leads the majors with five blown chances and sports s 6.14 ERA.

Our View: It may only seem "ridiculous" because nobody else in the Brewers bullpen has been consistent enough to challenge for the closer's spot. Anyway, it sounds like Gagne is safe, for now.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 5/5, 6:57 PM CT
It isn't surprising to hear Brewers general manager Doug Melvin tell Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Eric Gagne According to the report, Gagne remains the club's closer despite the veteran right-handers off-and-on struggles this season.

Our View: Gagne, who blew his major league-high fifth save of the season by surrendering two ninth-inning runs against Houston on Sunday, has no real competition. If the truth be known, his blown save on Sunday wasn't because he didn't make good pitches, it was one of those games that simply didn't work out due to some close plays and bad breaks.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 5/4, 9:14 PM CT
Eric Gagne blew his fifth save of the season on Sunday. The closer appeared to be rattled by a close play at first base and by a tight strike zone, and he ended up walking three batters, including a free pass which plated the tying run. "You've got to put yourself in position not to depend on anybody," Gagne tells the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "I made some good pitches, made some bad pitches. I put myself in a situation I shouldn't have been."

Our View: Gagne had been throwing well over the past couple weeks, and this latest blowup brings back the questions about his job security. If you have the roster depth, it can't hurt to grab Guillermo Mota or Salomon Torres, the two setup men who'd pitched the best thus far.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 5/2, 12:48 PM CT
With all the talk of Eric Gagne's lack of consistency this April, and the carry over from his dismal performance with the Red Sox last September, the Brewers' closer registered his ninth save of the season (tied for 3rd in the ML) on Thursday night.

Our View: With the release of Turnbow on Friday, and barring a a complete melt down or injury, Gagne is assured of being the teams ninth inning option for the rest of the season. Sure, his 5.27 ERA and 1.46 WHIP are ugly, but don't be surprised to see the former All Star approach 40-45 saves this year.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 5/1, 4:36 PM CT
Eric Gagne picked up his ninth save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth inning on Thursday.

Our View: Though his ERA (5.27) and WHIP (1.46) are ghastly, he does have 16 K in 13.2 IP. Still, he is just nine for 13 in save conversions, so it's really tough to get a handle on what to expect from Gagne moving forward. At least he has managed to stay healthy thus far.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 4/26, 9:33 PM CT
Eric Gagne picked up his seventh same of the season after striking out the side on Saturday.

Our View: The Derrick Turnbow vultures will have to wait. Gagne’s ERA is not pretty at 6.75, but he does have two decent outings in a row and has had no trouble missing bats with 15 strikeouts in 10.2 innings.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 4/22, 4:54 PM CT
Eric Gagne blew his fourth save of the season on Tuesday. He entered an 8-7 ballgame in the ninth inning, hit the first batter he faced, and proceeded to allow a single. Gagne then gave up a run on a fielder's choice. The closer did strike out two batters in the inning.

Our View: Strikeouts haven't been a problem for Gagne. It's all the other batters. The Brewers are being patient, but we can't help but notice how well a guy like Guillermo Mota is throwing.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 4/19, 3:45 PM CT
Milwaukee's Eric Gagne picked up his sixth save of the season today, facing three batters in the ninth and closing it out with one strike out, one ground ball, and one fly out.

Our View: Since allowing two homers in his first three games, Gagne has been steady, not allowing a single run since.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 4/18, 9:17 PM CT
Eric Gagne came in to pick up his fifth save of the season on Friday night for the Brewers. Gagne allowed a hit, but he also picked up both outs on strike outs.

Our View: Gagne may not always get it done the way you are used to, but he continues to be just good enough on most days to get the job done. He has nine K and only two BB on the year which seems to signal that his stuff is still good enough to be successful if he can stay healthy.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 4/13, 4:25 PM CT
Eric Gagne has made it two straight. The closer shut the door on the Mets with a scoreless, hitless ninth inning on Sunday. Gagne earned his second save in as many days and his third overall.

Our View: Gagne blew two out of his first three chances, and it's good to see him instill a little stability into his value. He remains on somewhat shaky ground.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 4/12, 3:51 PM CT
Eric Gagne has nailed down his second save of the season on Saturday, as he hurled a hitless ninth inning (with one strikeout) in a 5-3 win over the Mets.

Our View: He has been erratic in the early going, but should rack up a solid amount of saves if he remains the Brewers' closer this season.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 4/8, 10:34 PM CT
Eric Gagne blew his second save in three chances Tuesday, allowing a game-tying homer to Corey Patterson in the ninth. Rickie Weeks picked up Gagne with a game-winning RBI single in the 10th, but the Brewers and fantasy owners alike have to be concerned with Gagne's performance thus far.
Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 4/5, 7:15 PM CT
Eric Gagne rebounded from a terrible first outing against the Astros to pick up his first save in a Brewers uniform on Saturday. Gagne picked up a strikeout while keeping the Giants off base in an inning of work. Gagne looked like a totally different pitcher today as he threw strikes and was throwing hard. Perhaps the predictions of a David Riske to closer transformation was premature, especially after Riske allowed four baserunners in 1.2 innings on Saturday.

Eric Gagne is getting ready for the season at a relaxed pace, according to MLB.com. Gagne says he is at ease and knows his role is to close games for the Brewers, as opposed to the younger guys who are fighting for a spot on the roster. He knows the games don't count right now and doesn't have to prove himself to the Brewers yet. He commented,"Right now, I'm working on my fastball, just the location, and really getting my body under control." He also mentioned that he feels good.

Eric Gagne, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 12/7, 10:25 AM CT
The Boston Herald reports Eric Gagne could accept arbitration from the Red Sox. If the former closer does elect to go to arbitration with the Sox, he would make no less than 20 percent below the $6 million salary he made last season. In the event Gagne doesn't return to Boston, Texas and Milwaukee are two likely destinations.

Gagne hasn't pitched since Aug. 26 due to a sore right shoulder. The Red Sox will be thinking about the postseason when it comes to deciding when he will return to game action; so while we might see him Monday, we might have to wait a few days longer.

Eric Gagne worked the ninth inning in his debut for the Red Sox on Thursday. It wasn't a save situation, and he allowed a run on two hits, but he walked none and struck out two batters. Save situations will still go to Jonathan Papelbon, who was rested Thursday, so Gagne will be limited to stay saves when the situation calls for it.

The Red Sox have acquired reliever Eric Gagne from the Rangers, according to ESPN News. The Rangers will receive Kason Gabbard, David Murphy and Engel Beltre in the deal. Eric Gagne may not be traded by the Rangers before the deadline. In fact, a major league source told the Dallas Morning News that the club is "strongly leaning against" trading the closer and are more likely to pursue a contract extension with him. Teams often spread rumors as the deadline approaches, so it's still possible that he could be traded if the right offer comes along.

The Red Sox and Rangers may not feel they are perfect trade partners after all. The Boston Herald report two teams didn’t talk about potential trades involving Eric Gagne or Akinori Otsuka during their four-game series at Fenway Park last weekend. The Red Sox should still be looking to bolster their bullpen and we imagine they will renew talks with the Rangers before the deadline. If Gagne ends up in Boston, his fantasy value will plummet because he’ll serve only as a setup man to Jonathan Papelbon.

He allowed a solo home run and a single, and took the loss. "There was a little stiffness, but it felt good the first time throwing back to back in two years," Gagne said. "I was trying to work everything. The curveball and changeup was not as good as (Friday). I hit some spots and I missed some spots. These were positive outings." Gagne is scheduled to pitch again Tuesday for Frisco. If all goes well, he'll then travel with the Rangers on Thursday and be activated before they begin their weekend series Friday night in Seattle.
