Josh Towers, P, New York YankeesSaturday 9/5, 12:02 PM CT
Josh Towers has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Our View: Towers has a 4.96 ERA in 726 career innings, and will likely only be used in mop-up situations (or start's affected by the team's "Joba rules").

Josh Towers has been designated for assignment by the Yankees to make room for Chad Gaudin on the roster, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: The 32-year-old vet did not see any action in the majors this season, and was viewed as expendable.

According to Mark Feinsand on Twitter, the Yankees plan on designating Josh Towers for assignment on Sunday.

Our View: The Yanks need to clear room for Chad Gaudin, so Towers gets the boot. He was called up Saturday, didn't enter the game and now is being DFAed. He was treated as a one-day emergency backup plan. Rough 24 hours for the Triple-A starter.

According to the Twitter page of Yankees' beat writer Mark Feinsand, the team has recalled pitcher Josh Towers from Triple-A Scranton. In a corresponding move, the team optioned Mark Melancon back to the minors.

Our View: Towers has been moving around the minors since starting 15 games in 2007, and it looks like the Yanks have seen enough from him to give him a chance in the bullpen. The team needed more pitching after last night's 15 inning game, so Towers could see some innings tonight out of the bullpen.

Josh Towers pitched three scoreless frames Sunday against the A's, giving up two hits while striking out three. A candidate for the Rox rotation, Towers has given up one run in five spring innings.

The Rockies have signed Josh Towers to a one-year deal with a mutual option for 2009. Only $400,000 is guaranteed for 2008, but Towers will make a prorated $1.8 million as soon as he is added to the active 25-man roster, according to the Denver Post. He can earn an additional $1.35 million in incentives based on appearances and innings pitched. The option is for $3 million. Towers is expected to compete for the last spot in the rotation but could also fill a long relief role in the bullpen.

The Blue Jays declined to offer Josh Towers a contract for the 2008 season, making him a free agent. Towers posted a 5.38 ERA in 25 games (15 starts) last year. It remains to be seen where he'll end up, but he could be a league-average pitcher in the National League.

The Blue Jays intend to bring Josh Towers back to compete for a rotation spot next year, according to the Toronto Sun. Towers is arbitration eligible and earned $2.9 million in '07 in the final year of a two-year, $5.2 million contract. He posted a 5.38 ERA in 25 games (15 starts) last year, and there's little reason to expect things to get any better in 2008.

Josh Towers is going to the bullpen with A.J. Burnett set to rejoin the rotation Sunday, according to the AP. Towers is 0-3 with a 7.47 ERA in his past three starts.

Josh Towers is still the most likely candidate to be sent to the bullpen when A.J. Burnett returns from the disabled list this weekend, according to the Blue Jays website. "We'll see what happens," Gibbons said. "We're not ready to announce yet what we're going to do, but we could always do that. We'll see. We'll know something in the next couple days." Towers holds a 5.24 ERA in his last four starts.

When A.J. Burnett returns from the disabled list, which could be as early as next week, Josh Towers is the most likely candidate to be moved to the bullpen, according to the Toronto Sun. Towers hold a 5.48 ERA over his last four starts, and a 5.17 mark on the season.

Josh Towers has lost his spot in the Blue Jays rotation, according to the Toronto Sun. Towers, who will work out of the bullpen now, will be replaced by Victor Zambrano. Towers is 1-3 with a 4.70 ERA in four starts.
Josh Towers, P, New York YankeesFriday 4/6, 1:52 PM CT
Josh Towers won't make his first start until Tuesday against the Royals. The team doesn't want to get A.J. Burnett or Roy Halladay off schedule after Thursday's postponement at Detroit, so Towers winds up getting pushed back.

Josh Towers has won the final spot in Toronto's starting rotation, according to the AP. "Josh did everything we expected him to do," manager John Gibbons said. "He looks like he did two years ago. He's won a lot of games for us in the past, and I have told him all along that last year was just one of those years. Everything he did and tried backfired. I told him to forget about it and bounce back. There is every indication that he has done that." He'll make his first start of the year against Tampa Bay on April 8.

Blue Jays pitching coach Brad Arnsberg likes what he's seen so far this spring in Josh Towers, according to the Toronto Star. "I think Josh is much more at ease with what he did last year and working into this year," Arnsberg said yesterday. "I think his work habits improved over the off-season and I think his strength is better. I think the total spectrum of Josh has gotten a lot better. He seems like he's not as hard on himself and he understands that he's going to make bad pitches and he's going to make a lot of good pitches. He's going to take advantage of the good pitches and not be so hard on himself about the bad pitches." Despite all that, he remains a long shot to make the opening day roster.

Josh Towers could be called up from Triple-A Syracuse when the rosters expand in September, according to the AP. Towers produced a 1-9 record and a 9.11 ERA in 54 1/3 IP with Toronto earlier in the year.
