Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 1/28, 10:17 AM CT
Jose Contreras' one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Phillies was made official on Thursday, according to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki.

Our View: The Phils will look to Contreras in the seventh and eighth innings next season. Considering how awful Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge were in 2009, there's a small-chance that he could end up closing, too.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 1/22, 2:47 PM CT
Updating an earlier item, Philadelphia will indeed look to recent signee Jose Contreras to fill the seventh and eighth inning void left in its bullpen by the departure of Chan Ho Park, according to David Murphy of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View: Contreras has relatively limited experience as a reliever, but showed flashes of brilliance in the role late last season for the Rockies. The Phillies saw it first hand in the NLDS, likely sealing in their minds that he was capable of handling later innings in relief.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 1/22, 2:01 PM CT
Jorge Arangure of ESPN reports that the Phillies have signed pitcher Jose Contreras. It is a one-year deal.

Our View: Details, like what exactly his role will be, are scant at the moment, however. He could be assuming the late-inning role that Chan Ho Park had in 2009. Stay tuned.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 1/2, 4:55 PM CT
The Rockies continue to talk to Jose Contreras' rep, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: The Rockies are in the market for another late-inning reliever, and are considering bringing back Contreras - but his price tag is currently believed to be too high.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 12/28, 3:41 PM CT
The Cubs are interested in free agent pitcher Jose Contreras, according to ESPN.

Our View: They would want him as a reliever, and not a starter. Regardless of what role he eventually snags with a team, he will not have any fantasy value in 2010.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 11/21, 3:34 PM CT
According to Patrick Newman's NPB Tracker, former Colorado hurler Jose Contreras is considering pitching in Japan next season.

Our View: Apparently Contreras has contacted the Hanshin Tigers and will be visiting Japan next week. He's entering his 16-year-old son in an exchange program, but will likely reach out to some pro clubs while overseas. The 37-year-old finished last season with a 4.92 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in his 23 starts, so he likely won't be fantasy relevant even if he stays stateside.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 9/19, 8:22 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Jose Contreras (strained quad) threw a simulated game on Saturday and is close to returning to the Rockies.

Our View: Contreras performed well in the simulated game and mobility drills, much to the surprise and delight of manager Jim Tracy. He is a candidate to start on Thursday against the Padres if Aaron Cook can't go. Or the Rockies could elect to piggyback both pitchers in a combo start. Stay tuned.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 9/10, 4:43 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Jose Contreras left Thursday's game with a strained right quad.

Our View: Contreras injured the quad while running out a groundball in the bottom of the third inning. He wasn't working all that efficiently before leaving, having thrown 66 pitches and allowing seven baserunners during his time on the mound. Consider him day to day for now.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 9/5, 11:47 PM CT
Jose Contreras only allowed one earned run on eight hits over 6.2 innings in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Diamondbacks at Coors Field. He had one walk with five strikeouts.

Our View: Contreras had a strong debut with the Rockies, but it is too soon to say he is benefiting from a move to the NL. He looked good at times with the White Sox this season too.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 9/1, 6:25 PM CT
The Denver Post reports that Jose Contreras will make his Rockies debut on Saturday against the Diamondbacks.

Our View: The Rockies are hoping that a move to the National League will help Contreras right the ship this season. It's worked for pitchers in the past, but don't count on him for fantasy purposes as you may be severely disappointed. Even against a weak lineup like Arizona's.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 9/1, 8:39 AM CT
ESPN is reporting that the Colorado Rockies have acquired pitcher Jose Contreras from the White Sox in exchange for minor league pitcher Brandon Hynick.

Our View: Contreras has struggled nearly all season in 2009, and he surely isn't the answer for the Rockies. He could see a slight increase in numbers moving to the National League, but playing his home games in the Mile High City isn't a promising scenario. He is coming off one of his worst starts of the year against the Yankees, and he should remain ignored in the fantasy world.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 8/29, 3:03 PM CT
Jose Contreras was lit up for eight runs (six earned) on nine hits over 3.1 innings in Saturday's 10-0 loss at New York. He had two walks and three strikeouts.

Our View: Contreras was on a short leash heading into today's start, and may have hung himself with it following his terrible performance. He is 5-13 with a 5.42 ERA.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 8/29, 9:22 AM CT
Skipper Ozzie Gullen had a comical response when asked if Jose Contreras will get another start in the rotation this season, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Guillen said, "I have got three kids, and I want to see my grandkids when they are born. I do not want to get a heart attack before my time. Saturday's starter is going to be Jose Contreras. I do not have many choices. Our choices in the minor leagues were not very good. He is going to start."

Our View: It looks like Guillen has seen enough of the struggling hurler, but Contreras will get at least one more start to try and bounce back and prove he can still be effective.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 8/24, 10:23 PM CT
Jose Contreras gave up seven runs (one earned) on four hits over 2.2 innings of work in Monday's 12-8 loss at Boston. He had three walks and one strikeout.

Our View: Contreras was dealt his 12th loss of 2009, and has allowed seven runs in two of his last three starts.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 8/19, 3:35 PM CT
Jose Contreras dominated the Royals' anemic offense to the tune of just three hits in seven innings on Wednesday, and improved to 5-11 as the White Sox won 4-2 at home.

Our View: It was Contreras' first quality start since July 8. Since it came against the Royals, you shouldn't read too deeply into it. These sort of things just kind of happen when you pitch against a team whose shortstop is Yuniesky Betancourt.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 8/12, 10:48 AM CT
According to MLB.com, White Sox's manager Ozzie Guillen has no plans to replace struggling starter Jose Contreras in the rotation. Contreras is scheduled to start Friday against Oakland.

Our View: Contreras has not been good this season, but Ozzie is sticking with him for the time being. If he continues to struggle, the team will have to make a move, so expect it to come soon if he has another rough outing Friday.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 8/9, 4:42 PM CT
Jose Contreras gave up four earned runs on six hits over 4.2 innings in Sunday's 8-4 loss to the rival Indians at U.S. Cellular Field. He had two walks and two strikeouts.

Our View: Contreras has taken a loss in four of his last five starts, and falls to 4-11 for the season. The 37-year-old vet is only an option for the deepest of fantasy leagues.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 8/4, 10:08 PM CT
Jose Contreras gave up three earned runs on one hit over 2.2 innings in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Angels at U.S. Cellular Field. He issued five walks with three strikeouts.

Our View: Contreras ended the night with a no-decision, and took a loss in each of his previous three starts. He is only fit for fantasy duty in the deepest of leagues right now.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 7/29, 10:14 PM CT
Jose Contreras gave up three earned runs on six hits over 5.2 innings in Wednesday's 3-2 loss at Minnesota. He issued five walks and four strikeouts.

Our View: Contreras has taken a loss in three straight starts, and suffered his 10th loss of the season. He is not pitching well right now, and is only an option for deeper fantasy leagues.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 7/24, 3:23 PM CT
Jose Contreras struggled a bit again on Friday as he fell to 4-9 with the 5-1 loss to the White Sox. Contreras went 6.2 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out eight.

Our View: Contreras had the strikeout working today, but he also gave up four runs and nine hits. He is still not a strong fantasy play, although the eight K's are a good sign moving forward. It may be worth it to monitor his performance if you are desperate for some pitching.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 7/19, 6:03 PM CT
Jose Contreras had his first bad outing in awhile on Sunday as the White Sox were pounded by the Orioles 10-2. Contreras went 4.1 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits while walking four and striking out one. He is now 4-8 on the season.

Our View: After pitching very well in his last two starts, Contreras reverted back to his early season form today. It looked like he had things figured out, but today's start hurts his fantasy potential for the future. He would be a risky addition to a fantasy club at this point, and unless he shows this was just one bad outing, he should not be owned.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 7/8, 10:03 PM CT
Jose Contreras was brilliant on Wednesday night against the Indians. He held the Tribe to just one run on six hits and a walk and struck out nine in Chicago's 5-1 win.

Our View: With Wednesday's win Contreras is now 4-7 on the season and has been very good in his past two starts. He looks like he's figured something out, and if the old Cuban continues to throw like this he'll start getting plenty of attention in mixed leagues. He's a fine start for AL-only right now, but keep an eye on his next start as you may want to grab him off the wire if he's sharp again.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 7/1, 9:00 PM CT
Jose Contreras only surrendered two earned runs on five hits over eight innings in Wednesday's 6-2 win at Cleveland. He issued one walk and racked up eight strikeouts.

Our View: This was a solid outing for Contreras, and he snapped a two-game losing streak. He has three wins over his last five starts, and is worth employing in AL-only leagues for his next turn in Chicago's rotation.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 6/26, 5:46 PM CT
Jose Contreras was rocked for five runs (four earned) on seven hits over 7.1 innings in today's 5-4 loss to the rival Cubs at U.S. Cellular Field. He issued one walk and fired eight strikeouts.

Our View: Contreras took a tough loss, but actually did not pitch that bad, evidenced by his low walk and solid strikeout total. He is worth keeping active in AL-only leagues for his next battle.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 6/25, 8:23 PM CT
Jose Contreras is drawing interest on the trade market, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: After a dreadful start to 2009, Contreras has been pitching well since ironing out his mechanics in the minor leagues. He's allowed only three earned runs in 30 innings since being called back up, and would definitely provide a boost to many teams if the White Sox begin to start selling and unload him.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 6/21, 1:11 PM CT
According to the Chicago Tribune, Jose Contreras's start will be moved back to Friday against the Chicago Cubs.

Our View: The Cubs feature a lineup of mostly right-handers and Contreras represents a more favorable match-up for the Sox than lefty Clayton Richard, who was orginally scheduled to start Friday. He will be moved up a day and pitch Thursday against the Dodgers.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 6/19, 9:41 PM CT
Jose Contreras gave up three earned runs on nine hits over six innings in Friday's 4-3 loss at Cincinnati. He issued no walks with two strikeouts.

Our View: Contreras cooled off tonight after throwing 16 scoreless innings over his previous two starts. This marks his first loss since being brought back from the minors.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 6/15, 1:31 PM CT
Jose Contreras was named the American League player of the week for the week ending June 14 according to The Sports Network.

Our View: Contreras was dominant last week, throwing eight innings in both of his starts while allowing a total of zero runs and three hits. He won't keep up at this rate, but appears to have recovered from a disastrous earlier part of the season and is now worth a flier if nothing else.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 6/13, 6:02 PM CT
Jose Contreras enjoyed another strong outing as he only allowed two hits over eight scoreless innings in Saturday's 7-1 win at Milwaukee. He had two walks and racked up eight strikeouts.

Our View: Contreras has now collected two wins and fired 16 scoreless innings since returning from his stint in the minors. He is worth targeting in AL-only leagues if dangling on the waiver wire.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 6/8, 9:38 PM CT
Jose Contreras enjoyed a strong return to the Sox as he only allowed one hit over eight scoreless innings in Monday's 6-1 win over the Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field in the nightcap of their doubleheader. He had one walk and three strikeouts.

Our View: He claimed his first win of 2009, after being winless over his previous five starts. He could earn more starts in the rotation following tonight's dominant return, and is worth a look for deeper AL-only leagues if you need help.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 6/8, 5:25 PM CT
As expected, Jose Contreras has been recalled by the White Sox from Triple-A Charlotte. Reliever Wes Whisler was sent down as the corresponding move.

Our View: Contreras was winless over five starts with Chicago this season, and held a poor 8.19 ERA and 1.89 WHIP. He will return to the rotation to start the nightcap of Monday's doubleheader against Detroit, but is too unstable to consider for fantasy duty.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 6/8, 12:42 PM CT
Updating a previous report, Jose Contreras will pitch the nightcap of Monday's doubleheader with Clayton Richard getting the nod in the early game, according to MLB.com.

Our View: It was thought that Contreras may pitch Game 1, but the White Sox opted to go with Richard in the first game and wait on Contreras. The team will have to make a roster move in between games before Contreras can be activated, so that probably played a role in the decision.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 6/7, 9:48 AM CT
Jose Contreras is slated to return to Chicago's rotation for Monday's doubleheader against Detroit, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: He will likely start the first game, with Clayton Richard taking the mound in the nightcap. Skipper Ozzie Guillen expects Contreras to need help from the bullpen, and was winless prior to being demoted to the minors - meaning he does not merit fantasy consideration outside of deeper AL-only leagues.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 5/27, 11:22 AM CT
Jose Contreras may return to the White Sox for a doubleheader on June 8 against the Tigers, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. He was sent down to Triple-A for struggling with poor control over five starts.

Our View: Contreras is working to get back to the Sox, and holds a 2.18 ERA with Triple-A Charlotte. Clayton Richard has been pitching well and won't be dropped from the rotation for Contreras though.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 5/19, 5:42 PM CT
Jose Contreras picked up a one-hit win on Monday for Triple-A Charlotte, according to the Chicago Tribune. Manager Ozzie Guillen said there are no plans to call up Contreras at this point.

Our View: Contreras has not given up an earned run yet in Triple-A, but he is still walking far too many hitters. Don't expect to see him back in Chicago until he gets his control issues figured out, but it is encouraging that he is shutting down minor league hitters.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 5/13, 11:48 PM CT
Jose Contreras picked up the win for Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday after throwing six scoreless innings. He allowed three hits, five walks and struck out five.

Our View: His success is nice to see, but Contreras' five walks is a disturbing sign. He probably needs at least one more turn in Charlotte's rotation before returning to Chicago.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 5/11, 2:02 PM CT
Jose Contreras has been optioned to Triple-A Charlotte by the White Sox, according to the Chicago Tribune. Left-hander Jimmy Gobble was recalled from Charlotte as the adjoining move.

Our View: The Sox decided to send him down rather than use him in the bullpen. He was winless over six starts in the rotation, and held a dismal 8.19 ERA and 1.89 WHIP.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 5/10, 2:27 PM CT
The Arlington Heights Daily Herald is reporting that demoted starter Jose Contreras has accepted an assignment to the minors. Contreras will have to clear waivers, but he should be pitching for Triple-A Charlotte in the near future.

Our View: Contreras may benefit from starting in Charlotte as opposed to pitching out of the Sox' bullpen. If he can get his rhythm back and regain the feel for his split-finger, he could be back in the rotation before long. He is being replaced by Clayton Richard in the White Sox' rotation.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 5/9, 10:46 AM CT
Jose Contreras has been pulled from Chicago's rotation after another poor start in Friday's loss to Texas, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: Contreras is 0-5 with a 8.19 ERA and 1.89 WHIP over six starts, and will now work in the bullpen. Clayton Richard or D.J. Carrasco will be the top candidates to replace Contreras in the rotation.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 5/7, 9:42 AM CT
Jose Contreras could be on thin ice in Chicago's rotation as he is yet to win over five starts, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. He holds a dismal 8.31 ERA and 1.85 WHIP. Skipper Ozzie Guillen said, "I expect to win this thing. I get paid to win this thing. I do not care how hard I have got to make my players do better, I will. That is my job, to get the best out of my players. And I feel that right now, I am not doing it."

Our View: Contreras should not be in fantasy lineups while struggling, and he really needs a solid performance in his next outing before the club considers replacing him.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 5/3, 12:24 AM CT
Jose Contreras was lit up for seven earned runs on seven hits over a mere 3.1 innings of work in Saturday's 9-6 loss at Texas. He had two walks and three strikeouts.

Our View: Contreras remains winless this season, as he falls to 0-4 over five starts. His ERA is now at 8.31, and he should be held out of fantasy lineups until he proves to be effective.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 4/26, 4:37 PM CT
Jose Contreras allowed three runs over seven innings to keep the White Sox in the game, but they eventually fell to Toronto 4-3. Contreras didn't factor in the decision.

Our View: Contreras wasn't out pitched on Sunday, as he matched Roy Halladay's stat line almost exactly. He was denied a win though as the Sox bullpen coughed up a late run. His two Ks was a bit of a weak showing though.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 4/22, 7:19 PM CT
MLB.com is reporting that Jose Contreras is not in danger of losing his spot in the White Sox rotation for now. He will work wih pitching coach Don Cooper on regaining his confidence and revamping his split-finger pitch.

Our View: Contreras has a miserable 8.04 ERA so far this season, and there has been talk in Chicago of removing him from the rotation. The White Sox seem to be confident they can work with him and return him to his status as a good major league pitcher. If he can turn things around, he can be a good fantasy option in all leagues. Right now, he is barely serviceable in AL-only leagues.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 4/15, 3:25 PM CT
Jose Contreras struggled a bit in his start against the Tigers on Wednesday, giving up four runs in his 5.1 innings. He took the loss for the Sox, his second loss in two starts.

Our View: Contreras has not been good thus far in 2009, but he hasn't been awful either. He didn't give up a run until the fifth inning on Thursday, but then proceeded to give up 4 in the next 1.1 innings. He should improve as the season goes on, but he is by no means a good fantasy pitcher in mixed leagues. He should be serviceable in AL-only, however.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 4/7, 11:54 AM CT
Manager Ozzie Guillen notes that Jose Contreras will start on Friday against the Twins, and Bartolo Colon will take the mound on Saturday, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Our View: We knew that Contreras and Colon owned the final two spots, but Guillen hadn't clarified the order. This news doesn't alter their fantasy values.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 4/4, 6:40 PM CT
Jose Contreras allowed just one hit in four shutout innings as the White Sox defeated the Diamondbacks 2-0 on Saturday. He had three strikeouts and no walks.

Our View: Contreras has been hot and cold throughout his comeback from an Achilles' injury. While the team is very impressed with his progress, it remains to be seen whether or not he will start the season on the DL.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 3/20, 7:07 PM CT
Jose Contreras pitched three innings against the Giants Friday, allowing two runs on five hits in three innings.

Our View: This outing was by no means spectacular from Contrares, but the White Sox will gladly accept him throwing in any form at this stage. Initial prognoses following his ruptured Achilles tendon last August called for a full year of rehab.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 3/15, 7:20 PM CT
Jose Contreras struck out four hitters over two innings while allowing just one hit and no runs scored in the White Sox 15-5 win over the Mariners on Sunday. It was his first live game action of the spring.

Our View: The 37-year-old was not even expected to start his comeback from a ruptured Achilles' tendon until midseason, so today's performance was a bit of a medical miracle. The White Sox coaching staff have also been impressed with his stuff so far, so it's possible Contreras has an effective season in store. After a hot start in 2008, he completely fell apart before the injury took him out for good in August. 200 innings certainly seems like a stretch, but he could be a solid pitcher as long as he stays healthy.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 3/12, 5:24 PM CT
Jose Contreras will make his spring debut against Seattle on Sunday, March 15, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: It will be Contreras' first in-game action since August 9 of last season. He's made an astonishingly speedy recovery from a ruptured Achilles tendon and is someone to keep an eye on as a late sleeper in AL-only leagues, given that he should be placed into the No. 4 or 5 spot in Chicago's starting rotation if he looks effective enough.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 3/7, 5:16 PM CT
Jose Contreras looked good in a 55-pitch session on Saturday, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: Contreres has had an incredibly speedy recovery after rupturing his left Achilles tendon in August. He could be facing live batters in spring training as early as March 14 or 15 and may miraculously be ready to man up the No. 4 or 5 spot in Chicago's starting rotation by the beginning of the season.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 3/2, 10:11 PM CT
The AP reports that Jose Contreras threw off of a mound on Monday for the first time this spring. He reportedly looked very good, while throwing his entire arsenal of pitches. "It's incredible how I felt," he said through an interpreter. "I've never really thrown a bullpen like that, six months of not throwing on a mound. I felt strong. Velocity, location was good. The slider felt good."

Our View: Contreras is three months ahead of schedule after rupturing his Achilles' tendon in August. He hopes to be seeing game action by March 15, meaning there's a chance that he is in the White Sox opening day rotation. That seems like a longshot, but a few months ago today's throwing session did too.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 2/17, 3:53 PM CT
Skipper Ozzie Guillen believes Jose Contreras has made enough progress in his recovery from a torn Achilles' tendon that he may have a shot to compete for the fifth spot in the rotation for the beginning of the 2009 campaign, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: He seems more likely to start the season on the DL, with a return to the mound closer to May or June. As of now, Contreras is not worth drafting in fantasy leagues.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 10/20, 6:18 PM CT
The White Sox reinstated pitcher Jose Contreras from the 60-day disabled list on Monday, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Our View: This news doesn't change the fact that Contreras (Achilles) might not be able to pitch until August of 2009 and might not be back with the White Sox.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 9/7, 9:12 AM CT
Contreras' rehab from a ruptured Achilles tendon could take up to a year, according to the Arlington Heights Daily Herald.

Our View: He suffered the injury in August, so we would not see Contreras until the second half of next season if this timetable holds true.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 8/10, 12:15 PM CT
Jose Contreras has been officially placed on the 15-day DL, after suffering a season-ending ruptured left Achilles, according to the Chicago Tribune. Lance Broadway has been recalled from Triple-A Charlotte as the corresponding move.

Our View: The 37-year-old hurler's career in Chicago could be over. He has one year left on his contract.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 8/9, 8:13 PM CT
Updating news on White Sox hurler Jose Contreras and his Achilles injury, doctors confirm a full rupture of the tendon has occured, definitively ending his 2008 season and possibly his career, according to ChicagoSports.com.

Our View: There is no word on when he will have surgery, but athletes take months to recover. He will be 37-years-old next season and although he is one of the best-conditioned athletes on the White Sox, Contreras may not be able to recover.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 8/9, 7:43 PM CT
White Sox pitcher Jose Contreras ruptured his left Achilles' tendon and left Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox in the second inning, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: With two outs and a man on second, Jacoby Ellsbury hit a sharp grounder to first base. Contreras got a late start to cover the base and couldn't handle Nick Swisher's wide throw. Contreras ran past the bag, then fell to the ground at the end of the infield while trying to avoid Ellsbury. Contreras writhed in pain on the ground, clutching his ankle. He needed help to walk off the field. D.J. Carrrasco relieved him and got out of the inning with no runs. Contreras was activated before the game. He had been on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow tendinitis and hadn't started since July 13 at Texas. We will update news as the severity of the injury comes forth.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 8/6, 9:55 AM CT
Jose Contreras, who is recovering from right elbow tendinitis, is expected to be activated from the DL to start Saturday against the Red Sox, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. He has been out since July 18.

Our View: Contreras surrendered 12 earned runs over his last two starts with Chicago, but his ailing elbow played a part, and he could prove to be a solid contributor during the stretch run of the fantasy season if healthy.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 7/31, 9:33 AM CT
Jose Contreras threw Wednesday with no setbacks and is expected to make a rehab start for Triple-A Charlotte Sunday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Contreras is returning from right elbow tendinitis.

Our View: Hopefully Jose rediscovered his ability to pitch over his layoff.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 7/29, 8:43 AM CT
Jose Contreras said his throwing session Monday went "great," and assuming he has no setbacks, the righty is scheduled to make a rehab start Sunday and rejoin the rotation next week, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Contreras is coming back from right elbow tendinitis.

Our View: With the way Contreras was pitching before going on the DL, you should not be eager to get him back in your lineup.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 7/20, 11:00 AM CT
Jose Contreras has been placed on the 15-day DL due to right elbow tendinitis, according to the AP. The move is retroactive to Friday. D.J. Carrasco has been recalled from Triple-A Charlotte to fill his spot on the roster.

Our View: Contreras is 1-2 over his last six starts, and has allowed 12 earned runs over his last two outings. He will be missed in Chicago's rotation, but won't be missed as much as a fantasy hurler while he is out.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 7/13, 7:41 PM CT
Jose Contreras was hit hard for the second straight start. The veteran right-hander allowed seven runs, on 10 hits, walked two and struck out two over four innings in a 12-11 loss to the Rangers on Sunday afternoon.

Our View: Contreras didn't figure in the decision and his early season success had all but disappeared. He heads into the All Star break with a record of 7-7 and a 4.60 ERA.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 7/2, 11:11 PM CT
Chicago RHP Jose Contreras wasn't terribly dominating on the mound against Cleveland this evening, but he got the job done to help his White Sox earn the 6-5 win over the Indians. Contreras pitched six innings to allow four runs (three earned) on six hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

Our View: Contreras was a worry last month, going 2-3 with a 6.83 ERA. This ranks as one of the best outings he's seen this season and, we hope, serves as a sign of things to come.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 6/27, 6:06 PM CT
Jose Contreras allowed three earned runs on seven hits over six innings in Friday's 10-3 victory over the Cubs at US Cellular Field, with two walks and three strikeouts. The Sox got their revenge against their cross-town rivals, as the Cubs previously swept them in their set at Wrigley Field.

Our View: Contreras improves to 7-6 for the season, and he snapped a three-game losing streak.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 6/21, 3:08 PM CT
Jose Contreras was rocked for nine earned runs on 10 hits over a mere 3.1 innings in Saturday's 11-7 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field, with two walks and one strikeout.

Our View: Contreras has now allowed 24 earned runs over his last three starts in June. He should bounce back as he got off to a strong start this season, and you may be able to acquire him for a bargain price right now.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 6/15, 6:55 PM CT
Jose Contreras surrendered four runs (three earned) on seven hits over 6.2 innings in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Rockies, with two walks and four strikeouts.

Our View: Contreras has been rock solid for most of the season, but is now 6-5, and has fallen off track, as he has now allowed nine earned runs over his last two starts. He should remain active in your lineups, and hopefully he can bounce back in his next outing.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 6/10, 8:58 PM CT
Jose Contreras served up 13 hits and six runs to the Tigers on Tuesday night. Only two of the 13 hits were for extra bases, but the effort was enough to drop the right-hander to 6-4 with a 3.18 ERA.

Our View: After nearly two months of quality work, Contreras had gained a lot of believers. We'll chalk this up as an off-night.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 6/10, 1:28 PM CT
Jose Contreras will challenge the rival Tigers when he takes the hill at Comerica Park tonight, according to MLB.com. Contreras is 6-3 with a strong 2.76 ERA and 1.04 WHIP this season.

Our View: Contreras has hurled six-straight quality starts, and is 4-0 over the span. He is 0-1 against the Tigers over two starts this season though, and allowed eight earned runs over 11.2 innings. This will be a tough game for him, but should remain in your fantasy rotation.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 6/5, 10:07 PM CT
Jose Contreras improved to 6-3 with yet another dominating performance, this time holding the Royals to just one run over seven innings. Contreras had three strikeouts, allowed two walks, and now sports a 2.76 ERA.

Our View: Contreras has made 12 starts this season and seven times he has allowed just one earned run. Contreras has kept the White Sox in every game he has thrown this year never allowing more than four runs in any outing. His strikeout rate is still extremely low, but he isn't hurting himself by walking anyone and he is making the right pitch at the right time at almost every turn.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 5/30, 9:18 PM CT
Jose Contreras pitched well as he only allowed one run on five hits over seven innings in Friday's 2-1 loss to the Rays. He issued three walks and five strikeouts, and ended the night with a no decision, as Scott Linebrink gave up the winning run on a ninth-inning homer by Cliff Floyd.

Our View: This was another strong outing for Contreras, and he has only allowed six total earned runs over his last five starts.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 5/25, 9:56 PM CT
Chicago RHP Jose Contreras pitched an outstanding game to help his White Sox emerge with the 3-2 win over the Angels, but he left without reward for the effort. Contreras pitched eight innings, allowing just two runs on three hits without a single walk surrendered and 10 strikeouts collected on the evening.

Our View: Like the Angels, the White Sox couldn't find their bats, leaving Contreras to leave with no decision.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 5/20, 10:29 PM CT
Jose Contreras , who held the Angels to one run on four hits in his laststart, outpitched C.C. Sabathia on Tuesday to help the Chicago White Sox to a 4-1 victory over the Indians. It was Cleveland's sixth straight win.

Our View: Contreras is en fuego. The win gave him five on the season and lowered his ERA to 3.17.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 5/15, 8:47 PM CT
Jose Contreras, who held the Angels to one run on four hits on Wednesday night, earned a quality start. The White Sox right-hander walked and struck out three in seven innings and now has four quality starts in eight appearances this season.

Our View: In reality, all of Contreras starts were close to being qualifying efforts, and his peripherals this year far exceed his career splits. He has one complete game, a 3.35 ERA and 1.19 WHIP. Only his K Rate (4.70) lacks top-tier status.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 5/10, 12:40 AM CT
Jose Contreras limited the Mariners to one run through seven innings earning his third win of the season on Friday night.

Our View: Contreras and the White Sox caught the ice cold offense of Seattle at just the right time. Until rookie Wladimir Balentien hit a ninth inning solo homer, the only Mariner run to cross the plate was Ichiru, who scored on a wild pitch.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 4/27, 7:11 PM CT
Jose Contreras earned his second April victory against Baltimore on Sunday. The veteran right-hander allowed five hits, walked three, and struck out three in 6.2 innings.

Our View: Contreras lowered his ERA to a respectable 3.98 and continues to be a strong part of a solid starting five for the Sox.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 4/22, 11:19 PM CT
Jose Contreras allowed seven hits and four runs over 6.1 innings against the Yankees on Tuesday night. He was pitching decently until that seventh frame, when he left two runners on base and the bullpen served up a grand slam. Contreras is now 1-2 with a 4.68 ERA.

Our View: Contreras has posted only one quality start over his four outings, and we have very little reason to trust him in fantasy leagues. We'll grant that he has looked a little better over his last two starts, though.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 4/22, 11:13 AM CT
Jose Contreras is set to take the hill against the Yankees tonight, a team that he notably has a poor track record against, according to MLB.com. He is 1-1 this season with a 4.34 ERA, and is 2-4 lifetime against his former team from the Bronx.

Our View: He will duel with Chien-Ming Wang, who is 3-0 with a 3.81 ERA. This will be a tough game for Chicago.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 4/16, 8:50 PM CT
Jose Contreras had his first solid outing of the season on Wednesday night as he allowed just one run in seven innings against the Orioles to pick up his first win. Contreras struck out six Orioles but more importantly he allowed zero BB as he pounded the strike zone all night.

Our View: Contreras still possesses the stuff to be winner at the major league level, but far too often he nibbles and ends up walking far too many hitters. If he throws strikes, he can be a useful AL Only starter.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 4/4, 3:49 PM CT
Jose Contreras doesn't appear to have changed much from 2007. He allowed 10 hits and five runs (four earned) over five innings against the Tigers on Friday. Contreras walked four, struck out two, and threw only 56 of his 92 pitches for strikes. He escaped with a no-decision, but fantasy owners will judge him more harshly.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 3/24, 7:37 PM CT
Jose Contreras, who was scratched from his last start, had a successful outing on Monday as he retired 14 of the last 17 batters he faced. Overall he allowed three runs and six hits in 5.2 innings. Contreras lost 17 games last year with an ERA above five and a half, so he has a lot to prove this year though as he appears to be nothing more than a staff filler at this point.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 3/19, 2:18 PM CT
Jose Contreras was scratched from his scheduled start on Wednesday due to flu-like symptoms, the Chicago Tribune reports. He plans to work a minor league game on Thursday. Nick Masset will start in his place.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 3/6, 12:52 PM CT
The White Sox are expecting big things from veteran right-hander Jose Contreras this year, notes SI.com. They think part of Contreras' problem last season, when he was 10-17 with a 5.57 ERA, was psychological. Contreras was served with divorce papers on Opening Day last year. This spring, the report are he is in the mid-90s with his fastball. Fanball and RotoTimes reside in St. Louis, so we need to see that mid-90s heater... to believe it.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 3/4, 7:41 PM CT
Jose Contreras allowed two runs and two hits over three innings today in a 7-6 loss to the Angels, according to the Associated Press. Last season, Contreras went 10-17 with a 5.57 ERA. In an attempt to improve over those frustrations, coaches are working with Contreras in experiments with various arm angles and pitching techniques. “I want to pitch more three-quarters or higher because last year I pitched too many down low so my velocity came down,” Contreras said.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 2/29, 8:27 AM CT
Jose Contreras held the Rockies to an unearned run and one hit over three innings Thursday, as he tries to put last season's struggles in the rearview mirror, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. "This year, I prepared hard physically and mentally, and I feel good about it," Contreras said afterward. "[Last season] was the worst year of my career." The Sun-Times noted that Contreras went through a divorce last year, which played a role in his struggles. Hopefully, he'll be more focused this year and can turn things back around.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 2/7, 7:02 PM CT
Jose Contreras overcome mechanical flaws and off-field issues late last year posting a 3-0 record with a 3.15 ERA over 34.1 innings of work in September. Contreras is expected to carry his 2007 September into April and turn around his 17-loss season. Sources close to the team report that Contreras has put in extra work this winter so he can come into Spring Training, and eventually April, with better command of his arsenal.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 9/21, 5:54 AM CT
Jose Contreras has won his past four decisions and is 5-2 with a 3.11 ERA in his past nine outings, the AP reports. This takes some of the sting out of a terrible year, we suppose; he's lost 16 games this season, with a 5.51 ERA and 1.57 ratio. He's slated for two starts next week, if you're in a daring mood.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 8/27, 9:44 PM CT
Jose Contreras posted his first victory as a starter in more than two months on Monday. He held the Devil Rays to four runs on eight hits over seven innings. Contreras had dropped nine straight starts since beating Florida on June 18 and had lost 13 of 14 before Monday's win.

Our View: He still leads the majors in losses with 16 and has given up 184 hits in 148 innings this year.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 8/15, 8:53 AM CT
Jose Contreras will start for the first time since July 31 on Friday against the Mariners. "We promised Jose he'd start Friday," manager Ozzie Guillen told the Chicago Sun-Times. "I'm a man of my word, he deserves it."
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 8/10, 5:25 AM CT
Jose Contreras will wait until next week to rejoin the Chicago rotation, according to the AP. The Sunday start against Seattle, initially slated to belong to Contreras, will now go to John Danks. "I think Jose should be a starter," manager Ozzie Guillen conceded Thursday.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 8/8, 9:17 PM CT
Jose Contreras will get back on the mound to start Sunday's game. He had been pulled from the rotation due to his struggles, but the White Sox want to give John Danks a day off and Contreras another chance.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 8/3, 10:38 AM CT
Jose Contreras has no problem going to the bullpen for the short-term, but the veteran wants to be a starter next year. "I accepted the bullpen assignment now because I fully understand I'm struggling right now," Contreras told the Chicago Sun-Times. "I'm aware that I'm going to be back, I'm going to be OK. I want to be a starter. If they don't want me as a starter next year, I want to be out of here." The struggling right-hander has lost seven straight starts and is 1-10 with an 8.87 ERA in his last 12 outings.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 8/1, 10:29 PM CT
The White Sox will hand the ball to Gavin Floyd Sunday, skipping Jose Contreras in the rotation. "Right now that's what we've got to do for the good of Jose," manager Ozzie Guillen said in the AP. Contreras is 5-14 with a 6.60 ERA in 21 starts this season. The plan is for Contreras to miss one turn, but that may change if Floyd pitches well. "I think right now his head is spinning all over the place," Guillen said of Contreras. "He's a kid that's always pitched well and we'll see if this move helps him to get better for the rest of the season."
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 7/26, 9:05 PM CT
Jose Contreras is going to stick in the rotation despite his struggles. Manager Ozzie Guillen said he wouldn't demote Contreras to the bullpen because the pitcher "takes about an hour to get loose," according to the AP. He's posted an 8.27 ERA over his past 11 starts and has shown no signs of turning things around; on Wednesday, he allowed nine runs on 12 hits over 4 2/3 innings.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 6/28, 9:19 AM CT
Jose Contreras has a no-trade clause in his contract, but he said Wednesday that he’d waive it if the White Sox want to move him before the July 31 trade deadline. “If [the White Sox] come to me and say they want to trade me, that means they want to get rid of you,” Contreras told the Chicago Sun-Times through a translator. “So I would just waive [the no-trade clause]. But I really want to be here.” The Mets have shown interest in Contreras.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 5/20, 6:34 AM CT
Jose Contreras had been penciled in to start Sunday's game on short rest, but manager Ozzie Guillen changed his mind. "I don't want to lose my ace," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I want to keep my pitching staff as fresh as I can." Nick Masset will get the nod Sunday, and Contreras will take the mound on Monday, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 5/18, 10:25 AM CT
Rather than calling someone up from the minor leagues, manager Ozzie Guillen has decided to start Jose Contreras on Sunday. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Guillen cleared the move with Contreras on Thursday, the day after the veteran threw 100 pitches in 6.2 innings during a loss to the Yankees. The move means Gavin Floyd will not be called up from Triple-A for a spot start, as reported earlier this week.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 4/6, 1:05 PM CT
Ozzie Guillen says he's not concerned about the messy way Jose Contreras opened the year, the Chicago Tribune reports. Contreras was rocked for eight runs (seven earned) in an inning-plus of work Monday. "Every year, some player has problems," Guillen said. "His kids are sick, the wife is mad, the parents ask for money. There are a lot of problems out there, even bigger than that. Jose was fine, and I was satisfied with what he told me."
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 4/2, 5:32 PM CT
Jose Contreras' 2007 season didn't get off to a good start. Against the Indians on Monday, the right-hander was hammered for eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits and a walk in just one inning of work. His ERA on the year now sits at 63.00.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 9/24, 1:24 PM CT
As expected, Jose Contreras will miss the rest of the season after leaving his last start with a strained right hamstring, according to the AP. Contreras finished the year with a 13-9 record, 4.27 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 134 strikeouts.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 9/24, 5:31 AM CT
Jose Contreras likely will be shut down for his final two starts unless the White Sox miraculously re-enter the wild-card race, the Chicago Tribune reports. Contreras has had cramping problems in his legs over his last two starts. "I need to talk to him about it," Ozzie Guillen said. "He is under contract for the next couple of years, and I want to make sure [he is healthy]. If we don't need him, there's no use taking the chance it might get worse." The White Sox enter Sunday's play 5.5 games behind the Twins in the AL wild-card race. Brandon McCarthy, projected as a starter next season, relieved Contreras for three innings Friday night and would take Contreras' place Wednesday in Cleveland.
Jose Contreras, P, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 9/22, 9:04 PM CT
Jose Contreras left Friday night's game in the second inning after he straining his right hamstring while covering first, according to the AP. The severity of the injury isn't known at this time. Brandon McCarthy replaced Contreras on the mound.
