Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersThursday 1/21, 8:27 PM CT
The Rockies have reportedly been linked to outfielder Ryan Freel, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The 33-year-old vet is a decent hitter, but would have a hard time pushing for playing time in Colorado, as they have good outfield depth.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersMonday 8/31, 3:55 PM CT
Bob Nightengale of USA Today is reporting on his Twitter page that the Rangers have released utility player Ryan Freel. Freel was signed by the team just three days ago.

Our View: Well that sure didn't take long. Freel has bounced around this season, and it is starting to look like he might have trouble finding a home. You have to like his attitude and the way he plays the game, but his skill set just isn't good enough right now.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersFriday 8/28, 8:06 PM CT
According to MLB.com, the Rangers have signed utility player Ryan Freel to a minor league contract.

Our View: Freel was DFAed by the Royals last week and has now been with five different organizations in the last ten months. He's hit just .217 in limited time this season and don't be surprised if the Rangers follow suit and DFA him in the near future as well.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersThursday 8/13, 10:05 AM CT
The Kansas City Royals have requested unconditional release waivers on utility man Ryan Freel, according to the Twitter page of beat writer Bob Dutton. Freel was designated for assignment by the team eight days ago.

Our View: Freel has made three different stops this year, and he has failed to impress at any of them. He is a scrappy utility man who could still help someone out off the bench, but it is unclear what the future holds for Freel at this point.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersWednesday 8/5, 2:58 PM CT
According to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star, the Royals have designated utility man Ryan Freel for assignment.

Our View: The move was made to clear space for right-hander Kyle Davies. Freel has failed to stick with any team this season (Baltimore, Chicago, Kansas City) and it looks like his baseball days may be numbered.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersMonday 7/6, 1:33 PM CT
Ryan Freel has been acquired from the Cubs by the Kansas City Royals, according to the New York Daily News' Jesse Spector.

Our View: Freel became a Royal for a player to be named later. He could maybe see some center field with Coco Crisp out for the season, but he shouldn't be on your fantasy radar.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersThursday 7/2, 12:39 PM CT
According to SB Nation, Ryan Freel has been designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs.

Our View: Freel became expendable when the Cubs acquired Jeff Baker from the Rockies earlier today. Freel came over from Baltimore earlier this season and put up a miserable .369 OPS in 14 games with the Cubs. Even when he was healthy he couldn't hit.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersWednesday 6/24, 6:19 PM CT
Ryan Freel is expected to be activated when Reed Johnson is placed on the 15-day DL with his ailing back, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Freel has been recovering from a strained hamstring.

Our View: Freel can provide depth at third base and in the outfield for the Cubs, but was only hitting .152 over 33 at-bats this season prior to going down. He should only be considered for NL-only leagues upon his return to Chicago.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersSaturday 6/20, 9:10 AM CT
According to the Chicago Tribune, Ryan Freel has played well in the four games during his rehab stint and could be recalled soon.

Our View: Freel was 5-for-13 with three steals over the four-game stretch and the banged up Cubs would like to get him back up with the big club. As a reserve/platoon player he won't hold any fantasy value, but could make an impact in Chicago regardless.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersMonday 6/15, 4:05 PM CT
Ryan Freel has been sent to the minors to start his rehab assignment, according to TSN. He has been recovering from a hamstring injury.

Our View: Freel has good speed, but won't hold much fantasy value while fighting for at-bats as a reserve when ready to return to Chicago.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersThursday 5/28, 5:29 PM CT
MLBlogs.com is reporting that the Cubs have placed Ryan Freel on the 15-day DL with a hamstring injury. He will be replaced by Bobby Scales, who was sent down Wednesday.

Our View: No big shocker here, as it was expected Freel would land on the DL. His fantasy value is low anyway since he doesn't play everyday, but if he is on your team you should find another option.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersWednesday 5/27, 7:06 PM CT
According to MLB.com, Ryan Freel could land on the DL after exiting Wednesday's game against the Pirates with a hamstring injury.

Our View: Freel will be evaluated tomorrow and the Cubs should have a better idea of the situation then. If he's going to be out for more than a handful of games they'd likely put him on the DL and bring up Bobby Scales.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersWednesday 5/13, 5:50 PM CT
According to MLBlogs.com, Ryan Freel will make his Cub debut tonight against the Padres and hit eighth.

Our View: Freel was set to make his debut over the weekend, but has been dealing with hamstring tightness and wasn't fit enough to play until today. He'll likely see a decent number of at-bats with Aramis Ramirez on the DL.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersSaturday 5/9, 6:47 PM CT
Ryan Freel will miss his Cubs debut on Saturday due to a sore hamstring, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: Freel apparently injured himself in batting practice and the team wants to be cautious with him. His still available to pinch hit and should be in the lineup soon.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersFriday 5/8, 4:19 PM CT
Updating a previous report, Ryan Freel has been traded to the Cubs for Joey Gathright, according to the Baltimore Sun. Gathright has cleared waivers and will be assigned to Triple-A Norfolk.

Our View: Freel hasn't made much of an impact this season so far, but will have a chance to prove himself in a new uniform. In 15 at-bats with the O's he had just two hits and spent a good chunk of the season on the DL after being plunked in the head on a pickoff attempt. Freel will likely be a spot starter and bat off the bench and doesn't hold much fantasy value.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersFriday 5/8, 12:15 PM CT
The Cubs are talking to the Orioles about outfielder Ryan Freel, according to FOX Sports.

Our View: The Cubs covet versatility for their bench, and Freel can roam all three outfield spots, as well as serve at second and third base. The 33-year-old is not pleased with his lack of playing time in Baltimore, but would not likely see that much more action in Chicago.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersThursday 5/7, 6:02 PM CT
The Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles are shopping Ryan Freel. Lou Montanez has surpassed him on the organizational depth chart and Triple-A outfielder Nolan Reimold could be next. Freel is currently rehabbing from a head injury that placed him on the 15-day DL.

Our View: Freel may be hard to move as he is not worth his $4 million salary. He had two hits in 15 at bats in his first nine games this season.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersThursday 5/7, 9:20 AM CT
Ryan Freel has agreed to extend his rehab assignment for two more days to get more action at the plate, according to the Baltimore Sun. He is on the DL while recovering from a head injury.

Our View: Freel could be activated from the DL as early as Friday. Freel does not hold much fantasy value as a reserve outfielder.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersWednesday 4/29, 10:27 AM CT
Utility man Ryan Freel has returned to Baltimore after doctors failed to clear him for a rehab assignment. He was given a series of series of memory and concentration exams when he arrived at his Single-A destination, and the results weren't satisfactory. "I wasn't very happy about it, not at all, and there's a lot more stuff going on here than anybody else understands," Freel tells the Baltimore Sun. "I am definitely not as happy as when I came here." He is on the DL due to a head injury and will report to Double-A Bowie on Friday.

Our View: Strange. Freel's quotes (and the article) suggest he believes the team is trying to delay his return from the DL because they'd rather use other backup options. He hasn't publicly demanded a trade, but it's clear he is not happy with this situation. He may not even be worth much in AL-only leagues.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersSaturday 4/25, 8:34 PM CT
Ryan Freel (head injury) begins his rehab assignment at Single-A on Monday, according to the Baltimore Sun. He is not eligible to return from the DL until May 6.

Our View: Freel is expected to be just fine once he returns, though he will still be used primarily as a fourth outfielder. He was hit in the head on a pickoff attempt and earlier stated that he didn't think a DL-stint was necessary.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersSaturday 4/25, 9:17 AM CT
Ryan Freel (head injury) should be ready to go on a rehab assignment early next week, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: Freel, who stated at the time of the injury that he didn't need a DL stint, figures to be as reckless as ever when he returns. He had only two hits in 15 ABs to start the year (.133), this after a strong spring when he ran wild on the bases.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersWednesday 4/22, 12:16 PM CT
Ryan Freel did not suffer another concussion when struck in the head on a pickoff attempt, according to the Baltimore Sun. Freel said, "It is head trauma, not a concussion or a mild concussion."

Our View: Freel should be ready to return to Baltimore when first eligible to come off the DL, but holds little fantasy value as a reserve outfielder.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersTuesday 4/21, 5:47 PM CT
Ryan Freel believes that he could have avoided the 15-day DL a day after being hit in the head dueing a pickoff attempt. He was held in the hospital as a precaution and did not fly with the team to Chicago. "I feel great," Freel said.

Our View: It certainly appears that Freel will be ready to join the team as soon as eligible. He is a fourth outfielder for the Orioles and is not currently worth a fantasy roster spot.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersTuesday 4/21, 11:32 AM CT
The Baltimore Orioles have placed Ryan Freel on the 15-day DL one day after being hit in the head by Boston pitcher Justin Masterson during a pickoff play, reports the Baltimore Sun. Freel will be replaced by Lou Montanez.

Our View: No surprise here as the O's are being very cautious with Freel. Don't expect him to miss more than his allotted time unless the CT scan he takes today reveals something unexpected.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersMonday 4/20, 12:57 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Ryan Freel has been taken to the hospital for examination after being struck above the ear during a pickoff throw in today's battle with Boston, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: There is belief that the Orioles will place him on the DL even if considered day-to-day. The club could recall Lou Montanez from the minors to take his spot on the roster if needed.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersMonday 4/20, 11:07 AM CT
Ryan Freel left Monday's game against the Red Sox with an apparent head injury he sustained while diving back to second base on a pickoff throw. He was replaced by Robert Andino on the bases, and Andino stayed in the game at third.

Our View: Head injuries are always something to be taken seriously, but it appears as if Freel will be day-to-day. Hopefully this isn't serious, but stay tuned for more information.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersFriday 4/17, 5:33 PM CT
The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Ryan Freel is getting the start in left field for the Orioles in Friday night's game against Boston. Felix Pie will be on the bench.

Our View: Freel has some nice career numbers off of Boston starter Brad Penny, so he finds himself in the lineup tonight. He is a career .421 hitter off Penny, but he is hitting .111 in just nine at-bats thus far in 2009. If he cannot definitively win a starting job, he has no fantasy value.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersSunday 3/15, 4:18 PM CT
Ryan Freel was 0-for-3 with two strike outs, two runs scored and a stolen base in the Orioles 6-2 win over the Red Sox on Sunday. He played all nine innings in center field. It was his sixth stolen base of the spring.

Our View: It's apparent that Freel is feeling good this spring, as evidenced by his six steals and zero caught stealing numbers. However, he is hitting just .253 and has not been able to distance himself from Felix Pie and Ty Wigginton who are both competing for an out field spot. If he can gain the confidence of his coaches and be a regular in 2009, he could provide some nice fantasy value.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersSunday 3/1, 11:20 PM CT
Ryan Freel had a rough day on Sunday for the Orioles, going 0-for-5 against the Nationals.

Our View: If Freel can stay healthy in 2009, he should become a valuable fantasy player, especially for stolen bases.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersTuesday 12/9, 2:01 PM CT
The trade in which the Orioles will send catcher Ramon Hernandez to the Reds for utility man Ryan Freel is expected to be announced today, according to Baseball Prospectus.

Our View: There is a bit of a logjam in the Reds' outfield and somewhat of a hole behind the dish so the deal makes a lot of since for them. Hopefully, Freel will find something more than a platoon situation in Baltimore. He has the potential to be a nice fantasy producer, mostly due to his speed.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersMonday 12/8, 6:13 PM CT
The Cincinnati Enquirer is reporting that the Cincinnati Reds and Baltimore Orioles are discussing a Ryan Freel for Ramon Hernandez trade.

Our View: The Orioles are looking to move Hernandez's salary, and could turn to uber-prospect Matt Weiters behind the plate this year.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersMonday 8/4, 7:20 PM CT
Ryan Freel had surgery on his hamstring, but still thinks he could make it back this season, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Freel can be useful in fantasy baseball, especially in NL-only leagues, because of his stolen base potential.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersWednesday 7/23, 11:39 AM CT
Ryan Freel underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn hamstring tendon behind his right knee, according to the AP.

Our View: The 50-minute procedure was performed by Reds' medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek and will keep him sidelined for four to six weeks.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersFriday 7/18, 8:15 PM CT
Ryan Freel will undergo surgery to repair a torn hamstring, according to Reds.com. It is not known how long he will be out.

Our View: It's possible Freel may not see the field the rest of the year, so fantasy owners hoping to get some stolen bases out of him come August and September may be end up being disappointed.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersWednesday 7/2, 10:22 AM CT
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Ryan Freel has experienced yet another setback in his recovery from an injured hamstring. On Tuesday, he said he "felt another pop." An MRI showed a complete tear.

Our View: This is bad news for Freel whose legs give him his fantasy value. He still hopes to be back this season, but don't expect the Reds, who are far from contention, to rush him back onto the field.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersSaturday 6/14, 9:10 AM CT
Ryan Freel doesn't believe he'll be ready in two-to-three weeks. He ruptured his right hamstring on June 4 and was given that timeframe. "They said two to three weeks," Freel tells the Cincinnati Enquirer. "It's hard to see how it's going to be ready in two weeks... I pulled my hamstring 30 percent off the bone... It's kind of weird."

Our View: Yeah, that doesn't sound very fun. Team doctors know how long a typical injury takes, but it's ultimately up to the player to feel right. Fantasy owners shouldn't expect Freel to return very soon.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersWednesday 6/4, 1:03 PM CT
Outfielder Ryan Freel has been placed on the 15-day DL due to a strained right hamstring, according to RedlegNation.com. Corey Patterson has been called up to fill his spot on the roster.

Our View: Freel was hitting .298 over 131 at-bats, but he held little fantasy value with no homers and only 10 RBI.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersTuesday 6/3, 8:51 PM CT
Cincinnati outfielder Ryan Freel has left tonight's game against the Phillies due to a leg injury, according to the Sports Network.

Our View: Freel was running out a ground ball to short, but he fell to the ground two steps out of the batter's box and was grabbing his leg. Shortstop Jerry Hairston, Jr. was moved to center field as Paul Janish took over short. We will update with news as it comes forth.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersThursday 5/29, 7:32 PM CT
Ryan Freel hoped to have a full-time spot in the lineup this year, but even with the recent demotion of Corey Patterson, Freel is still in his familiar utility role, according to MLB.com. "Putting a guy like Jay Bruce out there, I can't put up those kinds of numbers," Freel said. "It's a lot easier to accept putting a guy like that out there. I know they're trying to improve this ball club up top and trying to put in the best people..."

Our View: Reading between the lines, Freel was saying what we have previously noted, that he is the superior option to Patterson and should have been playing over him all year long. Regardless, Freel will continue to fill the role of fourth outfielder and depth infielder despite a .319 average and the ability to steal bases.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersFriday 5/23, 7:54 AM CT
Ryan Freel started in center field and batted leadoff on Thursday, replacing Corey Patterson. He is expected to start again on Friday and Saturday because the Reds are facing left-handed pitchers. "Corey hits some of those lefties pretty good," manager Dusty Baker tells the Cincinnati Enquirer. "But he's just not swinging good or getting on base."

Our View: Fantasy owners in daily transaction leagues will want to keep Patterson benched the next couple days. Baker has a lot of patience with Corey, so we don't imagine Freel will take over the starting gig soon.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersSaturday 5/10, 4:07 PM CT
The Cincinnati Reds found hard times versus the Mets today, but the team raked a few hits on starter Johan Santana, led by OF Ryan Freel . Freel went 3-for-5 at the plate with is fifth double of the season, also adding his fifth stolen base of the season.

Our View: Unfortunately for his fantasy owners, Freel failed to drive in a single run and seen just one RBI this month.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersMonday 5/5, 5:12 PM CT
Ryan Freel is leading off and playing center field for the Reds on Monday night. Facing the Cubs and Ryan Dempster, skipper Dusty Baker has given Corey Patterson the night off.

Our View: Freel has played in 25 games this season, scoring nine times, driving in eight, stealing three bases while hitting .328.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersWednesday 4/30, 4:19 PM CT
Ryan Freel had three hits and an RBI from the leadoff spot for the Reds on Wednesday.

Our View: Though Corey Patterson is still the team's starter in centerfield, it is clear that Freel is making a case for more substantial playing time given that he is batting .321 in 51 AB this year compared to the .280 OBP that Patterson has produced thus far.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersTuesday 4/29, 8:27 AM CT
Ryan Freel is unhappy with his playing time with the Reds, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Ryan Freel went 5-for-11 with two doubles, three RBI and four runs in the series with the Giants, but was sent back to the bench against the Cardinals on Monday. Freel commented, "I'm trying to be careful about what I say. I've really got nothing good to say right now. There was a lot of stuff said that misinterpreted or miscommunicated this offseason. It would have stunned a lot of people if they heard what was said about me. Apparently, I said I couldn't play every day to the manager. Apparently, I told him that this offseason. That would have never come out of my mouth."

Our View: Freel is referring to the move to bring in Corey Patterson to play center field. Freel isn't a star player, but has a legit gripe as he is 14-for-48 (.292) with six RBI and one stolen base, while Patterson is only hitting .213 over 80 at-bats.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersWednesday 3/19, 10:07 AM CT
The Reds may seek to move Ryan Freel in order to obtain a catcher, the Cincinnati Enquirer figures. David Ross has a back problem that the team is concerned about. He also hit just .203 last year, so it's not like he's that firmly entrenched behind the plate.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersMonday 3/10, 10:35 AM CT
Ryan Freel could be on the trading block, according to the Hamilton Journal News. Utility man Freel realizes that he doesn't hold a spot in center field, second base, or right field, especially after the team brought in Corey Patterson. Freel has been nursing a contusion on his right wrist and said this about his feelings and future with the Reds, "You can't help but look around. I've been around the game awhile now, and I can look around and see what is going on. I can see what they're trying to do and hey, they're going in the right direction. When you get to a point in your age (32) and you see what's around you, one second you are at the top of their list and the next thing you know you don't know where you stand. You get an idea of how they're using guys and playing guys. There are some guys on this team who can flat-out play, and it's all about winning right now. It's not about what is going on with me, but as an individual, what is going on in my head, I'm thinking, 'What's going to happen next? I wonder what their options are and what they're thinking about me."
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersWednesday 8/8, 3:33 PM CT
As expected, Ryan Freel had season-ending surgery on his right knee Wednesday. The surgery was to repair torn cartilage and to clean out the meniscus in the knee, according to SportsTicker.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersWednesday 8/8, 10:47 AM CT
The Reds don't expect Ryan Freel to play again this season. Freel will undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee today, and while there is a slight chance it will be a simple procedure, it is much more likely that he'll need more extensive work, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "I'm probably going to be on crutches four to six weeks," he said.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersTuesday 8/7, 11:47 PM CT
Ryan Freel will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair cartilage in his right knee, according to the AP. If the doctors can fix the knee easily, it's possible Freel will be back within a couple of weeks. If the injury is more extensive, he'll likely be sidelined for the remainder of the season.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersMonday 8/6, 10:40 AM CT
Ryan Freel may need to go on the DL because of a sore right knee that's caused him to miss the last two games. It's the same knee Freel had surgery on in 2005, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. There's a chance top hitting prospect Jay Bruce could get the call to replace him.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersSunday 8/5, 11:53 AM CT
Ryan Freel, who has been dealing with a sore left knee, felt much better on Saturday, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. It's unclear if he'll be back in the starting lineup on Sunday.

Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersSaturday 6/30, 7:34 AM CT
Ryan Freel appears to be nearing a return to action. He was slated to play in the outfield on his rehab assignment on Friday and the infield Saturday before being re-evaluated on Sunday, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "We'll see what the medical people say," manager Jerry Narron said. The Reds are off Monday, so if Freel responds well to testing on Sunday, he likely would be activated from the disabled list for Tuesday's contest.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersMonday 6/25, 7:55 AM CT
Ryan Freel began a rehab assignment on Sunday. He was 1-for-4 as the DH and will play in the outfield today, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. It's unclear how long he'll remain on the assignment. "I have no idea," manager Jerry Narron said. "I'm not going to timetable it. My thing is: Just get him playing time and see when he feels he's ready." Since Freel is recovering from a concussion, the Reds will want to make sure he's fully healthy, so it could be at least a few days before he comes off the disabled list.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersSunday 6/24, 7:25 AM CT
Ryan Freel was able to take batting practice on Saturday. "He should go out on an official rehab in the next few days," manager Narron told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "It depends how he feels. Right now, my understanding is he feels good and is not having any problems." He's been out since the end of last month with a concussion, but he's getting closer to returning to action.

Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersThursday 6/14, 6:29 AM CT

Ryan Freel still was experiencing headaches and dizziness Friday, 11 days after his head collided with teammate Norris Hopper's elbow while they were chasing a fly ball on May 28, according to the AP. "I can't read a lot," said Freel, who estimated that he's had as many as 10 concussions in his life. This injury hadn't been diagnosed as a concussion, "But I know it is," he said.
Ryan Freel, 3B, Texas RangersThursday 6/7, 10:07 AM CT
