David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 6/2, 9:06 AM CT
Adam McCalvy is reporting on his Twitter Page that David Riske will undergo Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow. Riske will miss the rest of the 2009 season and possibly some of the 2010 season while recovering.

Our View: Riske could have had the surgery a few weeks ago, but he decided to hold off for a second opinion. He would have had a much better chance of being able to return for Spring Training if he hadn't waited, but now he will be pushing it for next year. He should not be owned in any league at this point.

MLBlogs.com reports that Brewers reliever David Riske will likely require elbow surgery that will end his season.

Our View: Riske suffered a setback in his rehab and will need reconstructive surgery. He has been on the DL since the second week of April with elbow soreness and now looks like he won't throw another pitch for the Brewers in 2009. His rehab was supposed to strengthen the joint and get him back on the mound, but it looks like it had adverse effects instead.

David Riske is set to report to extended spring training in Arizona to get some action, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He has been on the shelf since mid-April with right elbow tightness.

Our View: He will make his first appearance Friday, and the Brewers want to see if he can return to the majors without needing surgery.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 5/17, 2:52 PM CT
David Riske has started throwing off a mound and could begin a rehab assignment soon, according to MLB.com. He has been recovering from tightness in his right elbow.

Our View: Riske threw 30 pitches during a bullpen session on Saturday and is slated to throw again on Tuesday in Houston. He was encouraged by the session, and was surprised at how good his arm felt.

The Journal Sentinel reveals that ligaments in David Riske's are loose and that he may have to undergo Tommy John surgery. He will try and strengthen the elbow over the next month to see if it improves.

Our View: Riske is 32 and the surgery would likely rob him of most of next season as well. He appeared in just one game this season and gave up two runs in one inning of work.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 4/16, 5:22 PM CT
David Riske was placed on the 15-day DL on Thursday, retroactive to April 10, with tightness in his right elbow, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Our View: Riske is coming off right elbow surgery from September and allowed four hits and two runs in his one appearance this year, April 9 against San Francisco. R.J. Swindle was recalled from Triple-A Nashville to fill Riske's spot in the bullpen.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 3/8, 12:16 PM CT
David Riske, who is coming off right elbow surgery, is slated to throw a simulated game against minor leaguers today, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View: Riske is on schedule in his recovery. If healthy, Riske will have a shot to push for the setup role, giving him some value for deeper leagues.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 3/3, 10:45 PM CT
David Riske, who underwent elbow surgery in the offseason and threw live batting practice on Monday, is scheduled to do so again on Thursday, after which he could be cleared for in-game action, according to MLB.com.

Our View: This is great news for Riske and the Brewers. He was ineffective in Milwaukee last season but was clearly pitching at less than full strength and posted a 2.45 ERA with Kansas City the year before.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 9/16, 11:29 AM CT
Brewers reliever David Riske is no longer with the team, and he is scheduled to undergo surgery on September 23 to remove a bone spur from his elbow, according to the AP.

Our View: That would explain Riske's awfulness this season, as he has sported a 5.32 ERA, with a frightening K/BB ratio of 27/25.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 9/10, 9:43 AM CT
Brewers reliever David Riske has been pitching with a bone spur in his right elbow, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View: Riske has not been a very good investment for the Brewers, who signed him as a free agent in the offseason. He has an ERA of 5.32 and WHIP of 1.70 and thus, no fantasy value whatsoever.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 6/19, 10:54 AM CT
The Brewers activated David Riske from the DL Thursday. Riske has been out with a hyperextended right elbow.

Our View: Riske will go back into a setup role for the Brew Crew. Julian Tavarez was designated for assignment to make room on the roster.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 6/18, 5:11 PM CT
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that there's a good chance reliever David Riske will take part in only one rehabilitation session with Triple-A Nashville. Riske, on the disabled list while recovering from an elbow injury, struck out all three batters he faced Tuesday night. "We'll re-evaluate it (today)," Yost said. "There's some talk (about pitching just once). We'll see how he feels." After three strikeouts, Riske probably was feeling pretty good.

Our View: The original plan was for Riske to pitch again Thursday for the Sounds but manager Ned Yost said he might be brought back and activated after one outing.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 6/17, 9:20 PM CT
David Riske struck out all three batters he faced in his one inning during a rehab outing for Triple-A Nashville. "Riske, now there is something to talk about," manager Ned Yost said on MLB.com. "His outing [on Saturday] when he threw the sim game was very impressive. We know he's going to come back. He's back to being [himself]." Riske is coming back from a hyperextended right elbow.

Our View: Depending on how he feels tomorrow, Riske could have one more rehab appearance, or he could make his next appearance for the Brew Crew.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 6/13, 9:45 AM CT
David Riske, who is recovering from a hyperextended right elbow, threw 35 pitches in a bullpen session on Thursday, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View: He mixed in some splitters during the 35-pitch session and is scheduled to throw batting practice Saturday, and could make an appearance with Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday, possibly making him available to the Brewers sometime next week. He will provide depth to the Brewers' pen, but held a 4.71 ERA and 1.43 WHIP over 21 innings, and does not merit fantasy consideration.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 6/11, 5:49 PM CT
David Riske threw a 30-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday and said he felt no pain in his injured elbow, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Our View: Riske threw all fastballs, and appears to be close to being sent out on a rehab assignment, that is if his next bullpen assignment on Thursday goes well.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 6/8, 9:24 AM CT
David Riske, recovering from a hyperextended right elbow and a sore shoulder, threw off a mound for the first time on Saturday, according to MLB.com. He is scheduled to throw off the mound again Tuesday and is likely to need several such bullpen sessions before the team would consider activating him.

Our View: Riske will likely be in a setup role once he returns, as Salomon Torres has seized the closer's role for the time being.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 6/7, 9:42 PM CT
David Riske threw off the mound on Saturday for the first time since going on the DL with a hyperextended right elbow, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Riske is scheduled to throw again on Tuesday, but chances are that he will need to throw multiple bullpen sessions before the team would consider activating him.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 6/2, 8:01 PM CT
David Riske has yet to throw off a mound and isn't close to returning from a right elbow injury, the AP reports. "He's playing catch today. Right now, we're not much past that," manager Ned Yost explains. "We're going to take it day by day, but he's feeling much, much better." Riske has been out since May 14.

Our View: We imagine Riske will need a minor league rehab appearance before he comes back to the majors. He is a solid setup man when he's healthy, but Riske has no fantasy value right now.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 5/28, 11:26 PM CT
The Brewers report reliever RHP David Riske is taking longer than hoped to recover from elbow and shoulder injuries, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Riske was put on the DL on May 15th with a hyperextended elbow and a strained shoulder, but the team had hoped he would return from injury before he was eligible to do so. Last week, Riske played catch in the outfield at Pittsburgh and told coaches the soreness was still there. He will continue to rehab, but the team is hoping things start progressing soon.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 5/22, 8:02 PM CT
David Riske (elbow) hopes to be able to return on May 30th but he is still experiencing soreness in his elbow, according to MLB.com. "It's still in there," Riske said. "I finished what I was supposed to do, but I still felt it in the last five or six throws. It's not all the way gone yet."

Our View: With the Brewers bullpen in flux, they could certainly use a healthy Riske, though his performance when on the hill this season certainly hasn't matched what he did last year before earning his big contract.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 5/15, 12:21 PM CT
David Riske has been placed on the 15-day DL due to a hyperextended right elbow, according to the AP. Riske was injured while throwing a pitch in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s 6-4 loss to the Dodgers.

Our View: Riske allowed 11 runs on 22 hits over 21 innings, with eight walks and 14 strikeouts. He held little fantasy value prior to getting hurt.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 3/31, 7:20 PM CT
David Riske pitched a perfect ninth inning helping Eric Gagne gain the win in Milwaukee's opening day win in Wrigley Field. Gagne suffered the blown save after getting hit hard in the ninth inning, thus allowing Riske to enter into the save situation in the bottom of the tenth with Milwaukee up 4-3. Riske recorded four saves last season while pitching for the Royals.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 12/5, 9:11 AM CT
David Riske signed a three-year, $13 million deal with the Brewers Wednesday. The contract includes incentives that could push the value of the package to slightly more than $20 million.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 11/30, 11:34 AM CT
The Brewers, having just lost Francisco Cordero and Scott Linebrink, are close to bringing in an arm for the back of the bullpen. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel is reporting that the team is closing in on a three-year deal with free agent reliever David Riske. "We're getting close," GM Doug Melvin said. "We're hopeful of doing a deal." Riske had a good year with Kansas City in 2007, holding a 2.45 ERA and 1.26 WHIP.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 10/31, 10:52 AM CT
David Riske declined his $2.9 million player option on Tuesday, according to the Kansas City Star. Riske put together a solid season in 2007, holding a 2.45 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 65 relief appearances, and he's looking to solidify a multi-year contract this winter.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 6/8, 5:33 AM CT
David Riske has pitched 15 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings since May 1, the AP reports. This run isn't going to get him the ball in the ninth inning when the Royals have the lead, per se, but it makes Riske worth owning in AL-only leagues for the time being.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 4/2, 10:30 AM CT
David Riske will be the interim closer for the Royals while Octavio Dotel (oblique) is out, the Kansas City Star reports. "He has the most experience among the other guys," manager Buddy Bell said. Dotel doesn't expect to be out long, so temper your expectations on Riske for the moment.
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 2/25, 9:22 AM CT
The Royals are taking it slowly with David Riske early on to avoid aggravating his historically bad back, according to the KC Star. "There’s nothing wrong," manger Buddy Bell insisted. "He feels great. There’s just no reason to push him because he doesn’t have to (prove he deserves to) make our club. We’re probably being more cautious than we should be."
David Riske, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 12/20, 5:39 PM CT
The Royals inked David Riske to a one-year deal Wednesday with a club option for 2008, according to the Sports Network. "David has been one of the most consistent relief pitchers in the game the last four years," said Royals senior vice president of baseball operations and general manager Dayton Moore. "His experience and success will give us a better opportunity to match up the last three innings of the game." Riske posted a 3.89 ERA in 41 games in 2006.
