Justin Speier, P, Colorado RockiesThursday 1/28, 2:19 PM CT
Former Angels reliever Justin Speier has signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies.

Our View: The 36-year-old Speier has a career 4.11 ERA in 675 innings. He will almost surely end up throwing some major league innings in 2010.

Justin Speier has been released by the Angels, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: The reliever holds a poor 5.18 ERA, and the Angels apparently had enough of him after giving up three homers in one inning last Friday against Texas.

MLB.com reports that reliever Justin Speier was ejected from Sunday's game after the benches cleared following a Josh Beckett pitch that sailed over Bobby Abreu's head.

Our View: It remains to be seen if Speier will face a suspension. Regardless, he holds no fantasy value. Torii Hunter and two Angels coaches were also ejected.

Justin Speier has been left off the Angels' postseason roster as the club opted to go with rookie Kevin Jepsen, according to the LA Times. Speier said, "It's definitely disappointing. I felt like I've pitched well lately, so I know that they probably had a tough decision. But the bottom line is I didn't have the kind of year that I wanted to have."

Our View: Speier is no longer a dominant setup man, and struggled with a 5.03 ERA and 1.41 WHIP over 68 innings of relief this season.

The Angels are missing K-Rod already. With their closer sidelined for the next few days with an ankle injury, the Halos turned to Justin Speier, who served up a two-run homer to Travis Hafner in the ninth inning of a 4-3 loss. We're betting Scot Shields will get the next save opportunity.

Justin Speier threw a perfect inning against the Dodgers on Saturday, with two strikeouts. He is yet to allow a run over five spring innings, and could play a larger role if setup man Scot Shields isn't ready for Opening Day due to forearm soreness.

Justin Speier has been unavailable since Tuesday due to a strained MCL in his right knee. The problem has bothered him for about a week, but he aggravated it during Tuesday's outing, according to the LA Times. "The trainers think it's a small issue, but they want me to calm it down, take one step at a time. You don't want to change your delivery or mechanics and do something you're not used to doing." He was able to throw 20 pitches in a bullpen session while wearing a brace Friday, so hopefully he will be ready to get back in the mix for the Angels soon.

Justin Speier, out with an intestinal infection, has been upbeat about his progress lately. "He feels he's getting over the hump, and he's continuing to work into his stamina," manager Mike Scioscia told the LA Times. Justin Speier is no closer to a return than he was 10 days ago, when he terminated a minor league rehab assignment. Out since April 30 because of an intestinal infection, Speier had to abort the assignment after suffering a recurrence of the nausea and lack of appetite that have plagued him the last six weeks, according to the LA Times. There is no timetable for when he might pitch again. "Needless to say, there's a role for Justin that's very important and we haven't been able to see it for the last month or so," manager Mike Scioscia said. "He was a big part of our bullpen early in the season and projected to be a big part for the whole season, so there is a void there."

"He's just not up to pitching now," manager Mike Scioscia said in the LA Times. "He seems to make progress, and then he doesn't rebound the way he'd like. We hope it isn't [a serious] setback."

Justin Speier "a minor setback" in his recovery from an intestinal infection. Speier was supposed to throw on Saturday and Sunday for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, but after throwing 1 2/3 innings Saturday, he wasn't feeling well enough to pitch Sunday, according to the LA Times. "I didn't get much sleep, and I was feeling nauseous," said Speier. "I'm not trying to read too much into it. I feel better today." Speier threw a simulated game Monday and will attempt to pitch for Rancho Cucamonga again on Wednesday. There isn't a specific timetable for his return, but it shouldn't be long if he doesn't have any more setbacks.
Justin Speier, P, Colorado RockiesWednesday 5/30, 11:06 AM CT
Justin Speier should be able to return to the Angels in a week or two. Speier is out with an intestinal infection, but the reliever appears well on his way to recovery, according to the LA Times. "I lost 12 pounds, I felt nauseous, I was throwing up, it was affecting my sleep," said Speier. "I was pitching good, but it was one of those things where I needed to take a step back and get on some medication... Over a long season, if you're not getting your sleep, if you're losing weight, it's going to affect your pitching. I talked to [Manager Mike] Scioscia, and we felt the right thing to do was take a step back, get some rest, then get back to baseball activities."
