Three-time All-Star Javy Lopez retired Saturday after being reassigned to the Atlanta Braves' minor league camp, according to the Boston Globe. Lopez, who sat out all of last season, decided against trying to extend his 15-year career in the minors. He batted only .188 this spring in his attempt to become Brian McCann's backup.

Javy Lopez's two run home run in late February will be his last spring memory that meant something. Lopez, trying to make his beloved Braves as the backup catcher was destroyed on Saturday after he learned he wouldn't be with the team on opening day, this according to the team website. A few hours after learning the Braves might be able to find a spot for him in their minor league system, Lopez opted to retire.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Javy Lopez is in the best shape of his life. The 37-year-old catcher signed a minor league contract with the Braves in December and will compete to back up Brian McCann. Lopez is hoping to not only pull off that feat but to play well enough to entice another team to trade for him to be an everyday option.

The Rockies released veteran Javy Lopez on Monday, according to MLB.com. Lopez hit .375 in six spring games but failed to throw out a single baserunner in eight attempts. Lopez still feels he can be an everyday catcher somewhere. "I don't think I'll go anywhere else as a backup. The way I feel, I can easily be an everyday catcher," he said. "If I'm not an everyday catcher, I'd rather not play this year or retire." With Lopez out of the picture, the Rockies' catching duties will be handled by Chris Iannetta and Yorvit Torrealba.

"Colorado is a place and a team and a ballpark that he's always liked," said Chuck Berry, Lopez's agent. "We looked at a half-dozen places that would be good for him to go. Colorado was one of them." Lopez could see some action behind the plate along with Yorvit Torrealba and Chris Iannetta, as well as some time at first base when Todd Helton rests.

Boston is expected to pay a significant portion of the $2.75 million remaining on Lopez's contract this season.
