Vance Wilson, C, Kansas City RoyalsSunday 2/28, 6:40 PM CT
Vance Wilson is out of action while dealing with a back ailment, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Wilson is getting better, but skipper Trey Hillman is uncertain when the veteran catcher may be ready to participate in spring training. He would compete for a backup role if healthy, and wouldn't hold much fantasy value.

Vance Wilson has signed a minor league contract with the Royals, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View: The 35-year-old catcher will continue to rehab from a right elbow injury, and won’t be in big-league camp during spring training. When he does join the Royals, he won't hold much fantasy value as a reserve.

Vance Wilson underwent another surgery on his right elbow on Tuesday, according to the Detroit News. The team labeled it a "right elbow reconstruction revision."

Our View: Obviously, Wilson will not be back in Detroit this season, and with Brandon Inge hurting, they could have used him to spell Ivan Rodriguez.

Vance Wilson was trying to return to the Tigers this season, but that is not going to happen as he will soon undergo a second Tommy John surgery on his right elbow after tearing another ligament, according to the Detroit News. Wilson said, "I hope to play again. But you just don't know with something like this. The recovery from this is grueling, but at least I know what I'm facing."

Our View: Wilson would have served as the Tigers' backup catcher if he was able to return. Brandon Inge should continue to maintain the role.

Vance Wilson, who is recovering from right elbow surgery, received several cortisone shots in his arm on Thursday, and expects to resume throwing next week, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View: Wilson could serve as a solid backup catcher, but the team is still unable to set a timetable for his return.

The hits just keep on coming for Vance Wilson. The catcher has been out since June of last year while recovering from Tommy John surgery and more recently has battled plantar fasciitis in his foot. On Friday Wilson was to catch seven inning in an extended spring game, but he was forced to leave after experiencing pain in his elbow while making a throw to second base, according to MLB.com. The pain is believed to have come from the breaking up of scar tissue remaining from his surgery. "What a nightmare," manager Jim Leyland said. "I feel bad for the guy." The training staff will examine Wilson on Saturday before deciding when he will catch in another extended spring game.

Our View: Wilson can be a solid backup catcher if he could ever get back on the field. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that will happen anytime soon.

Vance Wilson will catch up to seven innings in an extended spring training game on Friday, the Detroit Free Press reports. The backstop is coming off Tommy John surgery in his right elbow and a more recent bout of plantar fasciitis.

Our View: We're not counting on Wilson returning to the majors until late June, at the earliest. Even then he won't have any fantasy value.

Vance Wilson is progressing well from Tommy John surgery, but a bout of chronic plantar fasciitis in his foot is slowing his rehab, according to MLB.com. "He can throw," manager Jim Leyland summarized, "but he can't walk."

Our View: Wilson had been hoping to be back by now, but his future is now cloudier than ever.

Vance Wilson has begun to make rapid improvement in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, according to the Detroit Free Press. "All of a sudden," manager Jim Leyland said, "he's starting to go leaps and bounds." Despite the improvement, Wilson still will begin the season on the disabled list.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland confirmed Thursday that Vance Wilson will not be ready when the season begins, according to the Detroit Free Press. Wilson is working his way back from Tommy John surgery, and it's not clear who will replace him as Pudge Rodriguez's backup.

Vance Wilson's recovery from TJ surgery doesn't look like it will enable him to be ready by opening day, this according to MLB.com. "More than likely, Vance will not be ready by Opening Day, from what I've seen," manager Jim Leyland said. The team is still trying to convince Brandon Inge to fill the backup catchers role, though they have been less than effective on that front.

Vance Wilson, coming back from Tommy John surgery, practiced throwing from 120 feet Monday with no apparent problems. The backstop said he would like to be ready to play in a game by March 20. "I would say that's possible but questionable," manager Jim Leyland told the Detroit News of Wilson's target date. Wilson would have value only if Pudge Rodriguez went down, and even this his value would be minimal.

Vance Wilson has not had the smoothest recovery from Tommy John surgery. He was experiencing pain and stiffness this winter, although it seems to have subsided in recent weeks. "He's throwing a little bit better," manager Jim Leyland told the Detroit News. "We'll have to wait and see. He's questionable, but I don't want to write anything off. He might be OK." If he's healthy, Wilson will begin the year as the backup to Ivan Rodriguez. Otherwise, Brandon Inge, who hasn't caught since 2004, will be No. 2 on the depth chart.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland said that he's "very concerned" about the status of Vance Wilson heading into the season. Wilson missed nearly all of last season due to Tommy John surgery. "I would predict it's very unlikely he'd be usable very early on (in spring training)," Leyland added, according to the Detroit News. "I'm hoping after the first couple of weeks, he'd be ready to go, but I'm not sure of that. He's done a lot to keep himself in great shape, but I'm concerned." Those concerns could force the Tigers to hold on to Brandon Inge as a reserve catching option. After the Tigers acquired third baseman Miguel Cabrera, it was assumed that they'd deal Inge, but those plans might be on hold.

Vance Wilson underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on Tuesday and will miss the remainder of the season. According to the Detroit News, Wilson was supposed to return to the Tigers as soon as this week after a minor league rehab stint, but he re-injured the elbow while making a practice throw from behind the plate.

Vance Wilson announced yesterday that he will not require surgery to repair his injured right elbow, according to the Detroit Free Press. He's aiming to return to action in 4-6 weeks. "Dr. Andrews saw what our doctors in Detroit saw," Wilson said. "I obviously have degeneration in a ligament in my arm, but it's not a big deal. I'm 34, and I've been catching for a long time. I definitely have a tear in the pronator (arm muscle) mass, but I won't need surgery. I need to rest it for about a month. I can resume building it up a little bit in about 3 1/2 weeks."

Vance Wilson will consult with Dr. James Andrews this week, though neither Wilson nor the Tigers anticipates that the torn muscles in his elbow will require surgery, the Detroit Free Press reports. "I would be shocked if surgery was required, from everything I've heard," Jim Leyland said.

Vance Wilson has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to his sore elbow. The earliest he'll be able to return is April 12. Mike Rabelo will caddy for Ivan Rodriguez in the meantime.

Vance Wilson had an MRI taken of his sore right elbow yesterday, according to the Detroit Free Press. He hasn't played since leaving Saturday's game with inflammation in the joint. Results of the exam weren't immediately available. "This is just to clear my own mind," Wilson said. "If it's just inflammation, I can play through the pain. It'll be fine. We'll get it taken care of."

Vance Wilson had to leave Saturday's exhibition game with inflammation in his throwing elbow, according to the Detroit Free Press. It doesn't appear to be anything serious, as he's listed as day-to-day.

The deal is worth $950,000 per year, plus $25,000 for 350 and 400 plate appearances, and $50,000 for 450 plate appearances. Ivan Rodriguez's backup is currently hitting .273 with four home runs and 15 RBI.
