Adam Melhuse, C, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 6/17, 11:30 AM CT
Adam Melhuse has retired according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View: Melhuse, who was playing at Triple-A Indianapolis, played in 15 games for Colorado and Texas last season, batting .167 in 20 at-bats. It appears the sun has set on his ten year MLB career.

Adam Melhuse has inked a deal with the Pirates and was assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View: The 37-year-old vet is a career .234 hitter in the majors, and holds no fantasy value while just serving as organizational depth in the minors.

The Rangers have signed Adam Melhuse to a minor league deal, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The club added the veteran catcher for insurance as Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Taylor Teagarden and Max Ramirez have a combined 125 games behind the plate in the majors. The 36-year-old Melhuse can serve at multiple positions and is a switch-hitter, but does not look to hold much fantasy value for 2009, namely with a career .234 batting average.

Adam Melhuse has been recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs, according to the AP. Catcher Yorvit Torrealba has been placed on the 15-day DL due to his knee injury as the adjoining move.

Our View: Chris Iannetta should see most of the action at catcher, and Melhuse is not worth targeting. He only hit .200 over 20 at-bats this season.

Adam Melhuse has been recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs, according to the AP. Cory Sullivan was optioned to Colorado Springs to make room on the roster.

Our View: The move came after starting catcher Yorvit Torrealba was scratched with an undisclosed injury Thursday.

Adam Melhuse cleared waivers and is officially a free agent, according to MLB.com. The former backup catcher of the Rangers was released last week.

Our View: Melhuse only hit .200 over 20 at-bats, with 11 strikeouts, and held no fantasy value prior to parting ways with Texas.

The Rangers released catcher Adam Melhuse on Friday, notes the Sports Network.

Our View: Melhuse became expendable when the team recalled catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia from Triple-A Oklahoma. Melhuse made eight appearances for Texas this season and batted .200 with one RBI.

The Rangers designated Adam Melhuse for assignment Thursday to make room on the roster for reliever Scott Feldman. In 23 games with Texas this year, Melhuse batted .206 (14-for-68).

Manager Ron Washington said Adam Melhuse, recently acquired via trade from Oakland, will be in the lineup about twice a week. "He's excellent (as a leader)," said Washington in the AP. "He's not a loud guy. But he knows right from wrong. When I heard we had an opportunity to get him, I said, 'Get him.'"

The A's traded Adam Melhuse to the Rangers for cash considerations following Saturday's game, according to the Contra Costa Times. "Anywhere is going to be better than here," said Melhuse when asked about what his playing time could be in Texas. "I've felt comfortable here for five years, but playing time was hard to come by. I could barely feel a pulse." He may see a tad more action in Texas, but he still won't have any fantasy value. The A's probably will recall Kurt Suzuki to replace Melhuse as their backup catcher.

Adam Melhuse was optioned to Triple-A Wednesday, making room for Dan Johnson off the disabled list, the team's official site reports. The move at least temporarily sets up Mike Piazza as the Athletics backup catcher. "He's gonna play behind the plate and DH," Geren said of Melhuse, who was 1-for-6 in three games this year. "If and when we need him, he'll be back . . . In the short-term, Jason (Kendall) will catch every day."

Adam Melhuse agreed to a one-year, $815,000 deal with the A's Friday, according to the AP. Melhuse, who hit .219 in 128 at-bats with Oakland last year, will once again back up Jason Kendall behind the plate.
