Dave Roberts, LF, San Francisco GiantsThursday 3/5, 2:39 PM CT
Veteran outfielder Dave Roberts was released by the San Francisco Giants Thursday, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

Our View: Roberts became the victim of a crowded Giants outfield and was released to pursue opportunity elsewhere. Roberts' next team will be required to pay only $400,000 for his services, with the Giants responsible for the rest.
Dave Roberts, LF, San Francisco GiantsThursday 7/24, 5:10 PM CT
Dave Roberts went 2-for-4 and contributed the lone RBI in Thursday's 1-0 win over the Nationals.

Our View: This was his second game back following his rehab from knee surgery, and could get more playing time following today's effort.
Dave Roberts, LF, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 7/22, 10:36 PM CT
Dave Roberts was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday. He was recovering from knee tendinitis.

Our View: Roberts takes Ray Durham's roster spot. He'll be the Giants' fourth outfielder for now and the Giants are likely shopping the veteran as they move towards a younger lineup. He has appeared in just six games this season.
Dave Roberts, LF, San Francisco GiantsFriday 7/18, 10:02 PM CT
San Francisco outfielder Dave Roberts could return to the team as soon as Wednesday, according to SFGiants.com.

Our View: Roberts will likely come back as a bench player as Fred Lewis, nine years Roberts' junior, has played relatively well in his absence. So while Roberts has the potential to give fantasy owners a few steals, monitor his playing time before rushing out there to pick him up.
Dave Roberts, LF, San Francisco GiantsFriday 7/11, 7:14 AM CT
Dave Roberts has swung the bat very well over his three rehab games at Triple-A Fresno, with a double, triple, home run and three RBI, according to the SF Chronicle. He could potentially return to the Giants sooner than the 45-to-60 at-bats manager Bruce Bochy estimated he would need. Bochy said, "I think he'll be a huge addition. With Dave's experience and ability to play left and center, his speed, his left-handed bat, it would be similar to getting a free agent because we really haven't had that all year. He has some weapons that can help us, whether it's coming off the bench or starting."

Our View: He would provide a solid boost to the club when he returns. The Giants have lacked a left-handed hitter off the bench, hence leaving them vulnerable against right-handed setup men and closers.
Dave Roberts, LF, San Francisco GiantsThursday 7/3, 7:38 PM CT
Dave Roberts is expected to begin a Minor League injury rehabilitation assignment Monday, this according to the team website. Roberts will begin his work with the Giants' Triple-A affiliate in Fresno. Roberts was batting .118 (2-for-17) before being sidelined.

Our View: Roberts is slowly working his way back from left knee surgery he underwent on April 12. Upon Roberts return he is not expected to unseat his replacement, Fred Lewis.
Dave Roberts, LF, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 7/2, 7:56 AM CT
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that manager Bruce Bochy said outfielder Dave Roberts (knee surgery), who is nearing a minor-league rehab assignment, will need 45 to 50 at-bats before being activated to the 25-man roster.

Our View: The best case scenario for Roberts is a return in late July, or two weeks after the All-Star break.
Dave Roberts, LF, San Francisco GiantsThursday 6/19, 8:53 AM CT

Dave Roberts, LF, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 6/14, 10:13 AM CT
Dave Roberts is hitting and running lightly as he recovers from left knee surgery, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Our View: We'll be surprised if Roberts plays more than a handful of games for the Giants again. The club is looking to the future and a veteran like Roberts will probably be trade bait come late July.
Dave Roberts, LF, San Francisco GiantsSunday 4/13, 8:58 AM CT
Updating an earlier story, Giants OF Dave Roberts went under the knife on Saturday as doctors attempted to correct problems in his left knee, and reports indicate it will be 12 weeks before the veteran bat rejoins the lineup, according to the Associated Press. Team orthopedist Ken Akizuki worked on Roberts’ knee for 45 minutes yesterday to remove unwanted cartilage behind the left kneecap that was caused by arthritis and general wear and tear.

Our View: The team reports there is no substantial damage or concern for the long term, but Roberts is 35-years of age and thus will need a bit longer to heal than others. Roberts will be be using crutches for the next 2 to 3 weeks and will begin light rehab exercising today.
Dave Roberts, LF, San Francisco GiantsThursday 4/10, 11:26 AM CT
As expected, Dave Roberts is likely to undergo surgery on his injured left knee, according to the Mercury News. Roberts said he will likely need surgery to repair extensive damage to his left knee, and it is going to take months, rather than weeks, to recover. Roberts added, "The training staff has done all it can to keep me on the field. But I'm back at Square One. The procedure will be more extensive than the typical scope. I'm a positive person. Hopefully things turn for us, the last few months of the season matter and I can be a part of it. It's pretty imminent I'll get something done." Fred Lewis should get the bulk of the playing time in left field while Roberts is out, but Rajai Davis, Dan Ortmeier and Clay Timpner should see time as well.

Dave Roberts said he expects to have more freedom to swipe bases this season, now that Barry Bonds is out of the picture, according to the Contra Costa Times. "The way it played out (in 2007)... " said Roberts. "It was pretty clear we wanted him to get his at-bats. We weren't scoring runs early in the season, and he was our best chance. We had to put the brakes on so he could get his opportunities." Roberts stole just 31 bases in 2007 after stealing 49 in 2006, and we may see a boost this season.

Dave Roberts, LF, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 8/11, 8:01 AM CT
The knee injury that Dave Roberts sustained Thursday doesn't appear to be serious enough to force a trip to the disabled list. In fact, he might be able to pinch-hit this weekend, according to the Contra Costa Times. "The next couple of days, against left-handers, I'll probably use him off the bench," manager Bruce Bochy said. While he might get into the mix in the next couple of days, he may not be inclined to test the joint out by trying to steal any bases.
