Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 1/22, 2:55 PM CT
Jeff Kent announced his retirement today as expected, according to the Associated Press. Kent stated, "For the kids who might want to be a baseball player some day, there is a chance that you could play this great game, if you are not the biggest guy, you are not the fastest guy and if your not the smartest guy."

Our View: Kent has played in 2,298 games in the majors, and ends his career with 2,461 hits, 377 homers, 1,518 RBI, 94 stolen bases and 1,320 runs scored. He held a career .290 batting average and .356 OBP and should be considered for the Hall of Fame.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 1/21, 12:48 PM CT
Second baseman Jeff Kent has decided to retire, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Kent spent last season with L.A., hitting 12 home runs with a .280 batting average. His career numbers make him a likely candidate for the Hall of Fame, as he hit .290 with 377 home runs and 1,518 RBI.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 11/6, 12:08 PM CT
Jeff Kent has filed for free agency, according to the Dodgers' official website.

Our View: The 40-year-old is best suited to serve as a designated hitter at this point of his career, and may ultimately decide to retire if he can't find a suitable fit with a team.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 10/30, 10:25 AM CT
Jeff Kent is expected to retire, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Our View: Kent is likely a Hall of Famer, as he has more career home runs than any other second baseman with 377. Kent is also a career .290 hitter with 1518 RBI.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersTuesday 9/30, 8:37 PM CT
Jeff Kent will not start Game 1 of the NLDS series between the Dodgers and the Cubs, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. Blake DeWitt will start and hit seventh.

Our View: Apparently Kent's knee isn't healthy enough for him to be in the starting lineup which means the Dodgers will have better defense with DeWitt but far less pop at the plate for their offense.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersTuesday 9/30, 8:52 AM CT
Jeff Kent believes he is healthy enough to start in Game 1 at Wrigley Field against the Cubs, according to the LA Times. He said, "There are a lot of people who think the glass is half empty. In baseball and throughout my whole life, I've always felt it was half full. I don't know what the expectations were. I took it one day at a time and pushed as hard I could."

Our View: Kent is less than a month removed from surgery on his left knee. He ended the regular season with a four-game hitting streak.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 9/27, 7:10 AM CT
Jeff Kent played five innings on Friday night and went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.

Our View: It was his first home run since August ninth as he had spent most of the time since then on the disabled list. Expect him to be back and starting for the Dodgers in the playoffs.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 9/25, 9:10 AM CT
Jeff Kent singled as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning, his first action since he injured his left knee August 29th, according to the AP.

Our View: Look for Kent to make a start or two in the final week of the season so the Dodgers can get a feel for how ready he may be to make their playoff roster.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 9/20, 8:22 PM CT
Jeff Kent has been activated from the DL following his recovery from arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee, according to the AP.

Our View: He will be limited to pinch-hitting duty, and will likely be replaced by a pinch-runner if he reaches base. He will hold no fantasy value for the final week of the regular season.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 9/13, 8:12 AM CT
Jeff Kent has started hitting drills and could take batting practice when the team returns from Pittsburgh next week, according to the LA Times. Kent is out with a knee injury.

Our View: Kent could return before the end of the regular season, but it might not be in a regular role.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 9/3, 10:57 AM CT
The LA Times indicates that Jeff Kent might return this season. His surgery on Tuesday didn't reveal any unexpected damage in his left knee besides torn cartilage, hence leaving open the possibility that the 40-year-old infielder could play again this season.

Our View: Kent is expected to start a rehab program today that could be completed in two weeks, but his recovery process could actually take up to eight weeks. If he does return, he may only be able to pinch hit.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 8/31, 11:25 PM CT
Jeff Kent will undergo left knee surgery on Tuesday, and the severity of his injury (or injuries) won't be known until the operation, the Los Angeles Times reports. The veteran second baseman has a torn meniscus, but the worry is that he has more serious damage.

Our View: We should know by the end of Tuesday if Kent will have a shot to return this season or if his career may be over.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 8/31, 10:39 AM CT
Jeff Kent has been playing with torn cartilage in his left knee, and there is speculation that results from his MRI could reveal much more damage, possibly ending his career, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

Our View: If his career is over, it's been a highly productive one, especially for fantasy owners, as they could count on his production at second base year after year.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 8/30, 10:31 AM CT
Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Jeff Kent left the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday, August 29th, due to left knee pain, and said he will undergo an MRI exam, according to The Associated Press. "I've got a lot of clicking and popping going on in there right now, and it's pretty painful," Kent reported.

Our View: The Dodgers will release more news on this later in the day. We have no indication on the severity of the injury at this point, but it doesn't sound especially optimistic.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 8/9, 11:55 PM CT
Barry Bonds showed up before the game and challenged Dodger manager Joe Torre, and then his Giants made good in 10 innings to get the 3-2 win, though a homer off the bat of Bonds' favorite second baseman, Jeff Kent, in the 10th inning made it interesting. Kent went 2-for-4 on the night with his 11th homer of the season, totaling one RBI and one run scored on the night.

Our View: Kent is hitting .360 thus far through August and carries four RBIs over his last two games forward. He hasn't hit with the power we tend to expect this season, but tonight he found it when it mattered.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 7/21, 11:55 PM CT
Jeff Kent went 3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs, and two RBI in Monday's win over the Rockies.

Our View: This was Kent's most productive offensive outing of the season. Seriously, look it up. Kent hadn't been responsible for five runs in a game since July 14, 2007.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 7/3, 3:00 PM CT
Jeff Kent left today's game against the Astros with back stiffness, according to Dodgers.com. The site reported that Kent did not appear to be in great discomfort as he was leaving the game.

Our View: Angel Berroa came in at shortstop and Luis Maza moved to second base. There is no word on how long Kent may be out.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 6/22, 1:07 PM CT
Dodger second baseman Jeff Kent is not listed in today's starting lineup against Cleveland, according to the LA Daily News.

Our View: Luis Maza gets the start in place of the veteran slugger, though the News fails to mention why Kent is out. We will update if news becomes available.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 6/7, 11:35 AM CT
Jeff Kent, who was ejected on Friday, will ride the pine on Saturday, according to the LA Times.

Our View: Kent has been performing very well, as he hit three homers over his last three games, and blasted four in his last seven outings.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 6/6, 12:22 AM CT
Jeff Kent hit two home runs, one in the sixth inning and one in the eighth, though it wasn't enough to lead the Dodgers to a victory over the Pirates.

Our View: Kent now has three home runs in his last three games and four in his last seven games as his bat is finally starting to heat up to reward those that were patient with him.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 5/29, 10:11 PM CT
Jeff Kent had a nice return to the lineup as he went deep for the fifth time of the year to knock in his 23rd run of the season. Blake DeWitt also went deep for the Dodgers.

Our View: Kent may no longer be a sexy name, but you can pretty much be certain that a 20 HR, 75 RBI season will be the end result no matter what the struggles, and there just aren't many second baseman you can say that about.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 5/29, 7:36 PM CT
Jeff Kent returned to the Dodgers lineup on Thursday after missing the past couple of games due to lower back tightness, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Kent has been languishing at the plate for most of the year with just four home runs and a .242 batting average, but he still has 22 RBI in 43 games as he continues to be one of the better run producers from the second base position.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 5/28, 6:57 PM CT
Dodgers manager Joe Torre spoke with reporters today and is hopeful second baseman Jeff Kent will be available to pinch hit tonight, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

Our View: Torre told reporters Kent, battling back spasms, might have been able to start, but the team had no desire to rush him along and would prefer to stay cautious. Instead, the team will see if he is needed to pinch hit during the game and will bring him off the bench for a limited spot if necessary.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersTuesday 5/27, 5:59 PM CT
Jeff Kent has been scratched from Tuesday's lineup due to lower back spasms, according to the LA Daily News. Chin-Lung Hu has replaced Kent at second base, while Luis Maza is playing short.

Our View: The Daily News speculates that this isn't a serious injury, but we'll update you when we know more.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 5/26, 7:02 PM CT
Jeff Kent was 3-for-4 in Monday's loss to the Cubs. All of his hits were singles. Kent is hitting .228 on the season with 22 RBI, 16 runs and four home runs.

Our View: Kent's three hits was his first multihit game since he went 2-for-5 against Colorado on May 2.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 5/17, 2:43 PM CT
Jeff Kent only has two hits over his last 33 at-bats and Manager Joe Torre commented on his slump, according to the LA Daily News. Torre said, "I have never been that age and doing that. But I am assuming that sometimes, your body doesn't listen to your mind. One thing you see in a lot of sports is that when you get older, I think the number of times you're able to do what you want to do is curtailed somewhat. That's why you try to manage how many games he plays. But I think he can still stand at the plate and believe he is going to do what he can do. I think he can still put up numbers and be a force, but I think it may take a little bit more work for him to do it."

Our View: The 40-year old second baseman is hitting .236 overall, with four homers and 20 RBI over 36 games. Luis Maza gets the start at second base today.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 5/11, 9:09 AM CT
Jeff Kent will get a day off on Sunday, the Los Angeles Times reports. Delwyn Young will likely start at second base.

Our View: We're sure the day off is just routine for the 40-year-old second baseman, although the 0-for-19 week probably made the decision very easy for Joe Torre.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 4/25, 12:42 AM CT
Jeff Kent had two hits, two RBI and a run scored on Thursday night, and his average now sits at .279.

Our View: Kent started slowly at the plate but he now has hits in nine of his last 10 games as he is finally getting healthy and finding his stroke.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 4/16, 12:19 AM CT
On a night that laid witness to a dominating offensive clinic put on by the top of the Dodges' batting order, it was the veteran at second that emerged as the team's top dog in the Dodgers' 2-11 wrecking of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Jeff Kent .

Our View: To be fair, SS Rafael Furcal hit his seventh double of the year (impressive), Andre Ethier hit his fifth, and Matt Kemp hit his second triple, but Kent belted his third home run of the season, blasting a two-out offering from Phil Dumatrait in the 5th inning with two runners on board, blowing the game open and moving the Dodgers towards a dominating victory.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 4/7, 11:40 PM CT
Jeff Kent had two RBI on Monday night though it wasn't nearly enough in the Dodgers 9-3 loss to the D'backs. Kent is only hitting .238 early on as he struggles with a leg issue, but with the team needing a veteran presence in the middle of the lineup he is playing through the pain. Don't worry about Kent, by the time the year is done he will get his, you can count on it.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 3/31, 10:08 PM CT
Jeff Kent, who had been questionable for the home opener as early as this past weekend, hit a two-run homer off Barry Zito to cap a three-run first inning. The Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants 5-0 on Monday and Kent was the major contributor. However, expecting Kent to avoid missing extended playing time to the disabled list this season, is like expecting lighting to strike twice in the same spot.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 3/29, 8:06 AM CT
Jeff Kent took part in his first exhibition action Friday since March 4. Barring a setback, Joe Torre expects Kent to start in the season opener, according to the LA Times. Kent's battling a strained hamstring and still isn't running at full strength, but it looks like he should be ready to roll next week.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 3/28, 8:31 AM CT
An MRI taken Thursday didn't reveal any further damage to Jeff Kent's strained right hamstring, according to the LA Times. He ran again Thursday, and manager Joe Torre said Kent could play over the next few days. Kent's status for the season opener remains uncertain, but clearly playing this weekend would be a positive sign.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 3/26, 7:55 AM CT
Jeff Kent ran at half-speed and took batting practice on Tuesday. It was his third straight of testing his hamstring by running, the Los Angeles Times notes. It's still not known if Kent will open the season on the DL, but the Dodgers could back-date such a move and only miss him for the first four games of the regular season.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 3/22, 7:47 PM CT
Dodger 2B Jeff Kent will miss, at the very least, the next week and possibly more, according to SI.com. Kent has been struggling with an injured right hamstring and, after playing in a simulated game on Saturday, is going to be shut down until further notice. This could put the Dodgers in danger of entering Opening Day with both their third bagger, Nomar Garciaparra, and Kent in the middle on the disabled list.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 3/19, 10:36 AM CT
Jeff Kent received a cortisone shot on Monday in order to help the healing process of his right hamstring. Kent won't run for another five or six days, the Los Angeles Times reports. He hopes to play in a game by the end of the weekend.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 3/12, 4:38 PM CT
Jeff Kent's strained right hamstring has healed well enough for him to begin playing, but he's not going to take the field just yet. "It lingers longer when you play on it -- any injury," Kent said to MLB.com. "I've had quad pulls and hamstring pulls my whole career. It's typical of what baseball players go through, nothing different." Kent said he would definitely be in the lineup if this were the regular season, but he doesn't want to rush things. Barring a setback, he should be fine by opening day.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 3/8, 8:12 AM CT
Jeff Kent tested his strained hamstring by playing catch and taking batting practice on Friday, according to the LA Times. However, he's not expected to run for another four or five days. Kent has downplayed the ailment, so if he's back in action later next week, he should be fine.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 3/7, 7:58 AM CT
Jeff Kent said his strained hamstring is mild enough that he expects to take batting practice Friday and likely would play in Friday's exhibition game it were a regular-season contest, according to the LA Times. "Because I've got time, I can take time," he said. Kent turns 40 today, so any little hitch in his physical status is going to be a cause for concern. At this point, he plans to skip a week of exhibition games and play it safely.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 3/5, 4:05 PM CT
Jeff Kent injured his left hamstring prior to Wednesday's game. He is slated to miss a week, the Los Angeles Daily News reports.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 2/7, 9:36 AM CT
Jeff Kent, who is in the last year of his contract with the Dodgers, would not say Wednesday if this will be his last season. "I won't even approach that. It's not the time or the place," he said in the LA Times. Kent will turn 40 next month but is still a very productive player.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 12/12, 11:42 AM CT
Jeff Kent has put off retirement for another year and will return to the Dodgers next season. He had a $9 million option for 2008 that was guaranteed when he made his 550th plate appearance late in the year, according to the LA Times. Kent has been a little injury-prone the last two seasons, but he's still one of the most productive second basemen in the league.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 9/28, 11:55 AM CT
Jeff Kent has sat out the last two games and may not play the final weekend because of a strained hamstring and bruised left leg, according to the LA Times. The man with the mustache has dealt with the hammy ailment since July, though it hasn't really affected him at the plate.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersTuesday 8/7, 11:33 PM CT
Jeff Kent was back in the starting lineup for the Dodgers on Tuesday after missing five games with a strained left hamstring, according to the AP. He was 1-for-4 in his return, extending his hitting streak to 12 games. Feel free to insert him back into the starting lineup.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 8/6, 12:08 PM CT
Jeff Kent said he is aiming to return to the lineup Tuesday. He's missed the last six games with a strained hamstring. "That's our target date," Kent said in the LA Times. "If we stretch out the progress [I've made], that looks to be a good day."
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 8/3, 12:06 PM CT
Jeff Kent's strained hamstring continues to improve, but the Dodgers still aren't sure when he'll be ready to return to the lineup, according to the LA Times. "It's really the old cliche: day to day," trainer Stan Conte said. "We've got four days invested in getting this better. We don't want to risk losing that by rushing him." Kent is apparently still having trouble running.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 8/2, 10:02 PM CT
The Dodgers had hoped that Jeff Kent would return to action on Thursday, but that wasn't the case. "We're not going to put him back out there until there's no chance of re-injury," manager Grady Little told the AP. Kent has now missed three games due to his strained hamstring, and Little said it was doubtful that Kent would play on Friday.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 8/2, 10:46 AM CT
Jeff Kent, who has missed the last two games with a strained left hamstring, could return to the lineup tonight, according to the Dodgers website. That said, the original plan was to keep Kent out of action until Friday, so it wouldn't be a surprise if the Dodgers were cautious with him and gave him another day of rest.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 8/1, 10:20 AM CT
Jeff Kent did not play on Tuesday due to a strained left hamstring, and he may not play for the rest of the Dodgers' series against the Giants, which goes through Thursday, according to the LA Times. "I don't know how long it's going to be," Kent said. "But it's not going to be long. Two, three days if I had to guess."
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 7/30, 7:17 AM CT
Jeff Kent was unable to complete Sunday's game. The second baseman was forced out in the ninth inning due to what's being called a strained left hamstring, according to the LA Times. The severity of the injury wasn't immediately clear, though more should be known after he's examined again Monday morning.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 6/4, 7:02 AM CT
Jeff Kent got a routine day off Sunday. Manager Grady Little said it wasn't due to Kent's current 1-for-26 slump at the plate, according to the LA Times. "It's just a scheduled day off," the manager said. "This isn't for his production, it's for his body, [to prepare] for the next three months." With any luck, his body also will be prepared to improve his production at the plate.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 5/27, 3:13 AM CT
Jeff Kent was given a routine day off Saturday, though he did make a pinch-hitting appearance. He's expected to be back in the lineup Sunday.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 10/1, 7:02 AM CT
Jeff Kent still is dealing with a sore oblique muscle. As a result, the Dodgers likely will hold him out of action on Sunday, so he can rest up for the postseason, according to the LA Times.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 9/24, 4:20 AM CT
Jeff Kent will probably start every game the rest of the way despite his sore oblique muscle, Grady Little told the AP. Those starts could be conditionally tied to the Dodgers staying in the playoff hunt, of course; Los Angeles enters today's play a half-game out in the wild-card race, and 1.5 games behind San Diego in the division. The Dodgers play six road games next week, three at Colorado and three at San Francisco.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 9/15, 7:38 AM CT
Jeff Kent admits he's still limited by his left oblique strain, the Los Angeles Daily News reports. "It could (return) anytime, I imagine," said Kent, whose left side was heavily iced as he spoke. "But hopefully, I'm keeping it calmed down the best I can. I'm not too worried about it. It's not much of an issue. I'm not the same player I was, but it's not an issue." Kent has been productive over the last month, hitting .326 with two homers and 16 RBI.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 8/7, 8:23 PM CT
As expected, the Dodgers activated Jeff Kent from the DL Monday, according to the AP. Kent has been out since July 17 with a strained oblique muscle. Kent will play first base until Nomar Garciaparra is able to return. The team placed Elmer Dessens on the DL to make room on the roster for Kent.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 8/7, 6:59 AM CT
The Dodgers are expected to activate Jeff Kent from the disabled list today, according to the LA Times. Initially, he's expected to play first base. Kent has been out with a strained left oblique.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 8/6, 6:49 AM CT
Jeff Kent lobbied manager Grady Little to be activated from the disabled list for Saturday's game, according to the LA Times. Grady decided against it, but the manager did say he probably will get Kent back in the mix Monday. "If he's not in the game by Monday, he'll probably come in with some kind of shotgun," Little joked. "It won't be a casual conversation." Kent is recovering from a strained left oblique.
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 8/4, 9:09 AM CT
The Dodgers had originally planned to activate Jeff Kent over the weekend, but those plans were put on hold because Kent felt discomfort in his left oblique muscle after taking batting practice the past couple of days, according to the LA Times. The Dodgers are hoping to activate Kent next Tuesday. "I don't want to risk having to miss more time again," Kent said. "It's a fine line to walk there and a risky decision. That's why I'll be careful."
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 8/3, 10:03 PM CT
Jeff Kent still does not have a timetable for a return from his left oblique strain, according to the AP. Kent, who went on the DL on July 18, took batting practice, but still feels "discomfort," he said. "I'm definitely being more cautious."
Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 7/28, 10:04 PM CT

Jeff Kent, 2B, Los Angeles DodgersTuesday 7/18, 9:17 PM CT
The Dodgers placed Jeff Kent on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday with a sore muscle on his left side, according to the AP. He had tried to play through the injury, taking four days off before the All-Star break, but the condition steadily worsened since his return. "I've never had to deal with an injury from the oblique muscle before," Kent said before Tuesday's game against Arizona. "I thought I could deal with it, manage it, handle it. It just got to the point where I was sacrificing myself not for the benefit of the team."
