Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 11/1, 4:11 PM CT
Jake Westbrook hopes to pitch in the Puerto Rican Winter League and is working out at the Indians training facility in Arizona, according to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. He had elbow surgery in August.

Our View: The 32-year-old did not play in the majors at all last season and managed only five starts in 2008. He remains an injury risk and is very mediocre even when healthy.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 8/11, 3:36 PM CT
Jake Westbrook has been shut down for six weeks with elbow soreness by the Indians, according to the team's Twitter page. It is more than likely that Westbrook will not be able to pitch for the team in 2009.

Our View: Every time Westbrook looks close to a return, he suffers another setback. There is no structural damage, which is the good news, but with the Indians going nowhere fast this season, it would be smart for Westbrook to shut it down for this season.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 8/7, 10:04 AM CT
Injured Indians' starter Jake Westbrook said he felt fine after his two inning rehab appearance for Double-A Akron on Thursday, according to MLB.com. Westbrook is scheduled to start for Akron on Sunday.

Our View: Westbrook also threw a bullpen session yesterday after the two innings, and he reported no problems. He still hopes to return to the team this month, and assuming he doesn't suffer another setback, he should reach that goal.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 7/20, 10:42 AM CT
The Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that injured Indians' starter Jake Westbrook threw 50 pitches off of a mound on Sunday. Westbrook is trying to return after a June setback to his surgically repaired right elbow.

Our View: Sunday was the first day Westbrook was allowed to throw after being shut down for two weeks following the setback, and the session went well. He believes he is at about 90 percent right now, and assuming there are no more setbacks he could be back on the mound for the Tribe some time in August.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 6/20, 12:24 PM CT
According to the Plain Dealer, rehabbing pitcher Jake Westbrook will be officially shut down from all baseball related activities for 14 days. He is coming off Tommy John surgery performed on June 12th, 2008.

Our View: The setback has to be frustrating for the Indians, who desperately need pitching help. Assuming there are no more issues like this, Westbrook is slated to return to the team in late July or early August, but pitchers in their shortened season after having Tommy John surgery usually head to the bullpen. It's hard to picture Westbrook's case being any different. This news likely makes the Indians sellers at the trade deadline.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 6/17, 7:57 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Jake Westbrook is officially in wait and see mode after having his most recent rehab start and bullpen session scratched. He is recovering from Tommy John Surgery.

Our View: His soreness in his elbow reached a new high in his most recent start, which is certainly not a good indication of him bouncing back quickly. He was expected to be back in the rotation at the end of this month, but it now seems unlikely that he returns before the all-star break.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 6/15, 7:33 PM CT
Jake Westbrook's next rehab start for Wednesday has been scratched due to soreness, according to the Associated Press. He has been recovering from right elbow surgery.

Our View: He will now throw a bullpen session Wednesday instead. The club noted that his rehab has gone smoothly, and being scratched is not viewed as a setback. There is belief he could return to Cleveland in early-July, and is worth stashing in AL-only leagues.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 6/10, 5:53 PM CT
Jake Westbrook will make his second rehab start on Thursday, according to MLB.com. He is recovering from Tommy John surgery and will make four to five total rehab starts before joining the Indians rotation.

Our View: Westbrook threw three shutout innings on Saturday. He will throw four innings this time around. Without any setbacks, he could return at the start of July and would probably be worth a long look in AL-only formats.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 6/6, 11:47 PM CT
Jake Westbrook, recovering from Tommy John surgery, threw three scoreless innings in his first rehab start for Double-A Akron on Saturday.

Our View: So far, so good for Westbrook's recovery. If he continues on this track, he will be back by July.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 6/3, 8:10 PM CT
The Akron Beacon Journal reports that Jake Westbrook threw three innings in an extended spring training game. He allowed two hits while striking out three. He threw 33 pitches and is expected to start for Akron on Friday. He is recovering from Tommy John Surgery.

Our View: Westbrook has been an above average pitcher in the past, but he has been out since early 2008. If you have an open DL spot open in AL-only formats, it is probably a good time to add him as he should return at some point in July.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 5/25, 7:01 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Jake Westbrook will throw three innings in an extended spring training game later this week. Assuming no setbacks, he will start his rehab assignment in early June.

Our View: The Indians could desperately use Westbrook in their struggling rotation. He only threw five games a season ago before having to undergo Tommy John surgery. He may not return until August, but if his stuff returns, he could be a boost to AL-only teams in need of starters.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 4/19, 8:27 AM CT
Jake Westbrook, who underwent Tommy John surgery on his elbow in September, has begun throwing breaking balls off a mound, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View: Westbrook could begin throwing in simulated games in three weeks and continues to target a mid-to-late May return to the majors, though he probably should not be bothered with in mixed leagues before he can prove to be effective in his return.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 4/3, 10:56 AM CT
Jake Westbrook has been satisfied by his rehab from Tommy John surgery, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View: Westbrook is hoping to start pitching in minor league games by mid-to-late May. He is on the 60-day DL and is expected to miss at least half of the season.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 3/26, 4:18 PM CT
According to MLB.com, the Indians have placed Jake Westbrook on the 60-day DL. Westbrook is recovering from Tommy John and right hip surgery. He is expected to be available after the All Star break.

Our View: Westbrook is an effective pitcher when healthy, and if all went well with the Tommy John surgery he could be throwing harder when he returns.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 3/13, 5:07 PM CT
According to MLB.com, Jake Westbrook threw a bullpen session from a regulation mound Friday. He is attempting to recover from Tommy John surgery and arthroscopic surgery on his right hip. He is expected to return to the team after the All Star break.

Our View: If his rehab goes according to plan, keep an eye on the waiver wire mid-season and grab Westbrook as soon as he's available. Pitchers tend to throw harder after Tommy John surgery and he could be an effective starter in the second half. Keep him on your bench for a few starts to see how he progresses, but it has all the makings of low risk-high reward.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 9/5, 8:03 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Jake Westbrook had successful arthroscopic surgery on his right hip in Nashville, Tenn., on Friday. He is still recovering from Tommy John surgery that he underwent earlier in the summer.

Our View: You won't be hearing much from Westbrook any time soon. He won't pitch again until midseason of 2009 at the earliest.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 9/3, 12:03 PM CT
Jake Westbrook is already out for the season following Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, and is going to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right hip Thursday, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View: The hip operation is not expected to hinder his recovery from Tommy John surgery.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 7/23, 7:24 PM CT
Jake Westbrook, six weeks removed from Tommy John surgery, is doing well in his rehab, according to MLB.com. "It's stable," Westbrook said of his elbow. "I'm pleased with it. It's still a little achy and a little sore. Now it's a matter of letting it heal and doing some rehab."

Our View: Westbrook will likely miss the first half of next season, and therefore is likely not worth really thinking about in terms of fantasy production until late in 2009.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 6/13, 9:57 AM CT
Jake Westbrook underwent successful Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in Los Angeles on Thursday, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Dr. Lewis Yocum performed the operation to transplant a tendon from his right wrist to replace the ulnar collateral ligament.

Our View: Westbrook is expected to fly back to Cleveland today and begin physical therapy immediately at Progressive Field. Recovery time for Tommy John surgery is normally 10-14 months.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 6/7, 1:09 PM CT
Jake Westbrook is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, and will miss the remainder of the 2008 season, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View: Jeremy Sowers will take Westbrook's spot in the rotation, until Fausto Carmona is ready to return.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 6/6, 8:31 PM CT
The Indians have received a diagnosis from Dr. Lewis Yocum regarding Jake Westbrook's ailing pitching elbow, but they're not going to tell anyone what it is until Saturday. "I will confirm that Jake saw Dr. Lewis Yocum on Friday," said GM Mark Shapiro in the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I will confirm the we have a clear diagnosis of his elbow. We will not say any more until Saturday."

Our View: The fact that the Tribe is delaying an announcement on this leads us to believe the injury might be pretty serious. We'll let you know tomorrow what Westbrook's situation is.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 6/4, 8:40 AM CT
Jake Westbrook is going to head to Los Angeles to see arm specialst Dr. Lewis Yocum, according to IndiansConfidential.com.

Our View: Westbrook landed on the DL due to a sore right elbow, and Yocum is considered an expert in the field of ligament transplant surgery for pitcher’s elbows. We will keep you posted on his trip to LA.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 6/3, 12:29 PM CT
Jake Westbrook has officially been placed on the 15-day DL due to his sore right elbow, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The team called up reliever Jensen Lewis from Triple-A Buffalo as an adjoining move.

Our View: The team is yet to determine how long Westbrook will be out of action. Tom Mastny is taking his scheduled spot in the rotation tonight against the Rangers.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 6/2, 10:03 PM CT
Jake Westbrook is going back on the disabled list. The Indians scratched him from his scheduled start on Tuesday due to right elbow inflammation, the AP reports. The club did not say who they will call up to start in his place.

Our View: Jeremy Sowers pitched on Sunday, so he's not an option. The Indians may need to find a one-start guy before turning the spot over to Sowers. We don't yet know how long Westbrook is expected to be out.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 5/28, 2:24 PM CT
Jake Westbrook was okay in his return from the DL on Wednesday. He worked five innings against the White Sox and allowed five hits and three runs, including a solo homer. Westbrook threw 92 pitches.

Our View: Westbrook basically cruised through the first three frames and really ran into trouble in the fifth. We hoped for a better showing, but it's tough to count on much after a month out of the bigs.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 5/28, 9:56 AM CT
The Indians have activated Jake Westbrook from the 15-day DL. He will start on Wednesday against the White Sox. Westbrook has been out since April 22 due to a strained left intracostal.

Our View: Fantasy owners already knew this was coming. Westbrook was pitching well before his injury and hopefully he can pick up where he left off.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 5/23, 11:19 PM CT
Jake Westbrook looks like he's ready to rejoin the Indians rotation. The righty tossed six shutout innings Friday for Double-A Akron in his second rehab start after giving up one run in 3 2/3 in his rain-shortened first rehab outing Sunday. Westbrook is recovering from an intercostal strain.

Our View: Look for Westbrook to rejoin the rotation next week, possibly in place of Fausto Carmona if Carmona's hip doesn't allow him to go.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 5/21, 9:50 AM CT
Jake Westbrook is scheduled to make a second rehab start on Friday for Double-A Akron, and if all goes well, he could rejoin the Indians' rotation sometime next week, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Westbrook thought he might get activated following Sunday's start at Lake County, but rain forced him out of the fourth inning. Westbrook said, "I was hoping I would only have to make one start, but the rain got me in the fourth inning. I think they were leaning toward me making two rehab starts anyway."

Our View: Westbrook said his arm and strained left side felt good Sunday. He's scheduled to throw 85 to 90 pitches Friday at Akron.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 5/18, 7:39 PM CT
Jake Westbrook had a decent start on Sunday for Single-A Lake County as he held the Lexington Legends to one run over 3.1 innings, according to Minor League Baseball.com. Westbrook permitted three hits and a walk while striking out four.

Our View: Westbrook is hopeful of returning by the end of the month, and this outing is a good step toward making that hope a reality.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 5/16, 9:59 AM CT
Jake Westbrook's rehab start for Single-A Lake County has been moved from Saturday to Sunday, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View: Jake didn't suffer any sort of setback with his intercostal strain. The Tribe just wanted to give him an extra day.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 5/14, 7:53 PM CT
Jake Westbrook , who threw a 70-pitch simulated session on Tuesday, was originally scheduled to make a rehab start for Single-A Lake County on Saturday, but Soloff said it's likely the start might be pushed back to Sunday, according to MLB.com. Soloff was still waiting to gauge how Westbrook was feeling from Tuesday's effort.

Our View: The Indians won't know how many rehab starts Westbrook will need before the staff witnesses his work at Lake County this weekend.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 5/13, 7:17 PM CT
The Cleveland Indians report RHP Jake Westbrook , currently on the 15-day DL with a strained left intercostal muscle, is scheduled to make a rehab appearance with Class A Lake County on Saturday against Lexington, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Westbrook threw a four-inning simulated game today at Progressive Field and the team is going to monitor how he pitches on Saturday. If things go well, Westbrook could jump right back into the Indians' starting rotation after just the one rehab start.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 5/11, 9:57 AM CT
Jake Westbrook threw a bullpen session on Saturday, and manager Eric Wedge thinks the starting pitcher could return before the end of the month, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Westbrook is out due to a left intercostal strain.

Our View: Fantasy owners need to show some patience. Westbrook isn't a power pitcher, and he could struggle if the Indians try to rush him at all. We'll continue to monitor his status.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 4/26, 3:06 PM CT
Jake Westbrook is expected to miss at least one month with a muscle strain in his lower back, according to the AP. The team initially figured the injury would keep him out only for a few starts. Indians trainer Lonnie Soloff said the timetable for Westbrook’s recovery changed because the symptoms of his injury persisted for a week since he got injured.

Our View: Westbrook was only 1-2 but he was still having a solid season as he held a 2.73 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over 29.2 innings, with 16 strikeouts and only five walks. Lefty Jeremy Sowers, who is covering for Westbrook in the Indians' rotation, will stick around longer than expected.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansFriday 4/25, 8:45 PM CT
Jake Westbrook said when he threw a fastball to Minnesota's Mike Lamb last Saturday, the pain to his left ribs was immediate, and he knew something was very wrong, this according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Westbrook wound up on the 15-day disabled list with an intercostal muscles strain the following day. It was another bump in the road for Westbrook, who last season missed seven weeks with a left oblique strain.

Our View: Westbrook is healing but the the pitcher has no timetable for a return to the active roster. The best guess is that the right-hander will return in mid-May.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 4/23, 9:08 AM CT
Jake Westbrook is expected to miss 2-4 weeks of action due to his left intercostal strain, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The team will re-examine the injury in about five days. If Westbrook is still having discomfort, he'll receive a cortisone shot to aid the healing process.

Our View: Paul Byrd will make Westbrook's previously scheduled start on Friday. Westbrook had a favorable 2.73 ERA over 29.2 innings, with 16 strikeouts, and it is unfortunate he suffered a setback.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 4/22, 1:19 PM CT
Jake Westbrook has been placed on the 15-day DL (retroactive to April 20) due to a left intercostal strain, according to MLB.com. To replace him on the roster, the team recalled outfielder Ben Francisco from Triple-A Buffalo.

Our View: This is his fifth stint on the DL over his career. The team is yet to name his replacement in the rotation while he is out. He was off to a solid start with a 2.73 ERA over four outings, despite a 1-2 record.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansSaturday 4/19, 6:03 PM CT
Jake Westbrook had another solid outing on Saturday allowing three runs in seven innings, but he fell to 1-2 thanks to continued poor offensive support.

Our View: Through four starts Westbrook has four quality starts with a 2.73 ERA, yet he has only one win to show for it thanks to less than timely hitting by his mates when he is on the hill.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 4/15, 6:48 PM CT
Jake Westbrook completed his third straight quality start on Monday night, but received a no-decision after the Indians bullpen blew his 4-2 lead.

Our View: Westbrook was perfect during spring training, and has carried his success into April. If Westbrook can continue this pattern, it would be an aberration for a right-hander at the age of 30. If you buy into the theory that by the time a pitcher hits his thirties, and they are what they've been, one might spend some time finding out what the Indians starter is worth on the open market.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 4/14, 10:13 PM CT
Jake Westbrook kept the Red Sox fairly quiet on Monday, allowing two runs (one earned) over 6.1 innings. He served up seven hits, walked three, and struck out five. The Indians bullpen ended up blowing a 4-1 lead and a win opportunity.

Our View: Westbrook wasn't as sharp as he was in his previous two outings, but the numbers were still good enough. He could easily be 3-0, rather than 1-1, at this point.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansTuesday 4/8, 11:57 PM CT
Jake Westbrook went the distance for the Indians Tuesday, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out four over nine innings. Travis Hafner gave the Tribe the lead in the top of the inning with a two-run jack, and Westbrook shut the door in the bottom of the frame. He needed just 94 pitches in the complete game effort. Westbrook had a phenomenal spring, and that's carried over into the regular season, as he has a 2.76 ERA after two starts.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 4/3, 2:00 PM CT

Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansMonday 3/24, 3:24 PM CT
Jake Westbrook pitching six perfect innings on Monday against the Braves. During his work he struck out eight batters. Arguably the best outing by any pitcher this spring. Westbrook's inconsistencies the last few years have dropped him in fantasy circles. More performances like this and he will climb the cheat charts quickly.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 3/9, 7:12 PM CT
Jake Westbrook pitched three solid innings on Sunday, and the Cleveland Indians hit three solo home runs to defeat the Washington Nationals, 5-2. Westbrook has been bothered by a sore right arm this spring but appears to be ready for the opening week of the regular season. The Indians right-hander missed several starts last year to injury and logged a substandard K rate and had only six wins on the season. In Westbrook's second start this spring he gave up one hit, one walk and struck out five.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansThursday 2/28, 2:44 PM CT
Jake Westbrook, who missed today's start because of a sore right arm, threw a 45-pitch bullpen session, this according to The Plain Dealer. Westbrook is scheduled to take the pill to the hill against Detroit on Sunday. The report notes that Westbrook says he's always experienced arm soreness in spring training. "I usually have it for about half of spring training," said Westbrook, "but this year it's probably a little stronger than in the past." Westbrook said throwing the bullpen was easier on his arm than pitching in today's game.
Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 2/27, 6:30 PM CT
Jake Westbrook has been scratched from his scheduled start on Thursday because of a sore arm, this according to a report on Sports Illustrated. "I usually get this every year," he said. "I'm not a big fan of throwing bullpens every other day. It usually acts up on me." Westbrook figures to be fine and be the team's third starter this year. If healthy, he figures to return to the form that allowed him to pile up 44 wins in 2004-06.

Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansWednesday 6/6, 8:48 AM CT
Jake Westbrook will make his second rehab start on Friday for the Indians’ Double-A affiliate. Westbrook was shaky in his first rehab outing last week at Triple-A, but the Indians are more concerned with the status of his strained left abdominal muscle. “If I feel good, I ought to be able to perform well,” Westbrook told the Indians official website. “You still have to have results. You can’t just throw it up there and what happens happens. I still want to get the guy out.” Westbrook will be limited to 75 pitches on Friday, and will have to push that number to at least 90 before the Indians will think about putting him back in their rotation.

Jake Westbrook, P, Cleveland IndiansSunday 5/20, 4:01 AM CT
Jake Westbrook probably won't be ready until mid-June, the Indians official site reports. He was originally expected to miss 3-5 weeks when his strained oblique injury came about in early May; the team now accepts that he'll be closer to the five-week estimate.
