Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 9/30, 11:45 PM CT
Brad Penny dominated the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, allowing just one unearned run in a complete game performance, as the Giants won 4-1 at home.

Our View: It was only the fourth complete game of his career. Penny has been sensational since coming to San Francisco, going 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA in six starts.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 9/25, 12:07 AM CT
Brad Penny deserved better than a no decision on Thursday, but his closer couldn't finish and the Giants fell to the Cubs 3-2. Penny went eight strong innings and allowed only one run on seven hits while walking one and striking out four.

Our View: Penny has been outstanding as a Giant minus his last start against the Dodgers, and he found the magic again tonight. If he is going to pitch for the Giants, he better get used to doing it without a ton of run support.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 9/19, 7:44 PM CT
Brad Penny was destroyed by the Dodgers on Saturday. He lasted just 2.2 innings after allowing seven runs on five hits and three walks. He also served up three homers in the embarrassing 12-1 loss.

Our View: Penny has been brilliant since joining the Giants this season, but the wheels came off on Saturday. He was 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA in three starts before the LA bloodbath. It was the second time this season he'd allowed three homers in a game.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 9/13, 7:20 PM CT
Brad Penny won his third start in as many opportunities with his new team on Sunday. He allowed just two runs on five hits and a pair of walks and stuck out two in the 7-2 win over the rival Dodgers.

Our View: Penny has posted not just a win, but a quality start as well in each of his three starts with the Giants. He has allowed just four total runs in 22 innings with his new club.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 9/7, 7:12 PM CT
Brad Penny only allowed two earned runs on three hits over seven innings in Monday's 9-4 win over the Padres at AT&T Park. He had one walk and fired six strikeouts.

Our View: Penny is 2-0 over two starts with the Giants, and only issued two earned runs over 15 innings. He is benefiting from a return to the NL after leaving Boston.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 9/2, 8:53 PM CT
Brad Penny was fantastic in his Giants debut on Wednesday. He shut out a loaded Phillies lineup in their own ballpark for eight innings and earned his first National League win with a 4-0 victory.

Our View: Penny allowed just five hits and a walk in the contest and fanned a pair of Phillies. Looks like the thought that a transition back to the NL would help him was right on. Still, it's hard not to improve on the 7-8 record and 5.61 ERA he had in Boston.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 8/31, 2:18 PM CT
According to Sports Illustrated, former Red Sox's pitcher Brad Penny has signed a deal with the San Francisco Giants. Penny cleared waivers earlier this afternoon, and he chose to sign with the Giants over several others who were interested.

Our View: Well that sure didn't take long. The Giants have been interested in Penny since he became available, and they feel like they helped solidify their rotation with this move. The Giants better hope for the same boost that John Smoltz got by heading to the NL, because Penny wasn't great for the Sox.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 8/31, 1:57 PM CT
Brad Penny reportedly went unclaimed by Monday's 2:00 p.m. deadline, according to the Twitter page of Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman. Penny will now become a free agent and will be free to sign with any team he chooses.

Our View: It's a pretty big shocker that Penny didn't get claimed by anyone, but it seems almost certain that he will be pitching with someone soon. Teams that have expressed interest publicly include the Giants, Twins, Marlins, and Yankees, and there could be other teams interested as well. Expect to hear news on his destination soon.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 8/29, 10:08 AM CT
The Marlins are reportedly serious about acquiring Brad Penny, according to FOX Sports.

Our View: The Marlins are 4.5 games back in the NL wild card standings, and believe that Penny could improve their chances of making the playoffs. He struggled with Boston, but could benefit from a return to the NL.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 8/29, 7:07 AM CT
The Rockies are believed to be losing interest in acquiring Brad Penny, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: The club still thinks he can be an effective pitcher, but have concerns regarding how he would fit in their clubhouse. Penny would like to play for a contender, with the Rangers, Marlins and White Sox among the teams interested in him.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 8/27, 2:16 PM CT
The Minnesota Star-Tribune reports that the Twins may consider claiming Brad Penny off of waivers instead of waiting on him to become a free agent. Although Penny said he had been released last night, he was not on waivers as of this morning.

Our View: The Rockies and Marlins have both been reported to have interest in the struggling starter as well. The more teams that take an interest, the more likely a waiver claim is made.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 8/27, 11:53 AM CT
According to FOXSports.com, the Dodgers, Rockies, Marlins, Giants and Rays are all interested in the services of recently released starter Brad Penny.

Our View: The Red Sox released Penny Wednesday night and he should clear waivers on Monday, but teams are free to begin talking with him at any point. He struggled in the heavy-hitting AL East (5.61 ERA, 1.53 WHIP), but could reinvent himself in the National League, where he has performed much better in his career. A move to the Rockies would be interesting, as there may be some bad blood lingering between Penny and the division-rival Dodgers.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 8/26, 11:05 PM CT
Brad Penny has reportedly been granted his release by the Red Sox, according to the Boston Herald. Penny said, "I asked for my release and I got it. I enjoyed playing with all of the guys. I played for a great manager on a great team. I had a great time. I enjoyed it. I wish things had worked out better, but that happens."

Our View: Penny was dropped from Boston's rotation after only claiming one win over his final 11 starts. He is now hopeful of catching on with another team that will give him a shot to start.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 8/23, 8:24 AM CT
Brad Penny has been dropped from the Red Sox rotation in favor of Tim Wakefield, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: And justifiably so. Penny has gone 0-3 in August while allowing 20 runs in 21.2 innings, good for an 8.31 ERA. He could get the ball again if more injuries hit the Sox's starting staff, but for now he has zero fantasy value.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 8/21, 10:48 PM CT
Brad Penny was victimized by the Bronx Bombers on Friday night as he was touched for eight runs on ten hits and a walk over just four innings. He took the loss as the Sox fell 20-11.

Our View: The eight-run shellacking was Penny's worst outing since his second start of the season, where he matched his ER allowed total in just a three inning start.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 8/15, 11:26 PM CT
Brad Penny was tagged for four earned runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings in Saturday's 7-2 loss at Texas. He had four walks and six strikeouts.

Our View: Penny falls to 7-7 with a 5.22 ERA. He has taken a loss in three of his last four starts, and will remain an unstable fantasy option for his next trip to the hill.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 8/10, 9:48 PM CT
Brad Penny gave up three earned runs on six hits over six innings in Monday's 6-5 win over the Tigers at Fenway Park. He had one walk and two strikeouts.

Our View: The Tigers tied the game at 5-5 in the seventh inning, so Penny ends the night with a no-decision rather than a win. He is now winless over his last three starts, but pitched better after allowing five earned runs over six innings in his last outing at Tampa Bay.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 8/5, 10:35 PM CT
Brad Penny was rocked for five earned runs on six hits over six innings in Wednesday's 6-4 loss at Tampa Bay. He had two walks and five strikeouts, and was tagged for three homers.

Our View: Penny has allowed 12 earned runs over his last two starts, and only earned one win over his last eight outings. He is just an option for AL-only leagues.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 7/29, 9:54 PM CT
Brad Penny was roughed up for seven earned runs on seven hits over five innings in Wednesday's 8-6 loss to Oakland at Fenway Park. He had four walks and three strikeouts, and was tagged for two homers.

Our View: Penny's ERA climbs to 5.07, and has only claimed one win over his last seven starts. He should only be considered for AL-only leagues in his next trip to the hill.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 7/24, 9:44 PM CT
Brad Penny was in control from the hill in Friday's 3-1 win over the Orioles at Fenway Park, as he only surrendered one run (not earned) on five hits over 6.1 innings. He had no walks with four strikeouts.

Our View: Penny improves to 7-4, and ended a five-game drought without earning a win. Tonight's strong performance should help his trade value with the July 31 deadline approaching.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 7/20, 2:55 PM CT
The Boston Globe suggests that the Red Sox may be more inclined to move starter Brad Penny after the impressive performance by Clay Buchholz on Friday. Penny is a notorious weak second-half performer, and Buchholz has proven he is ready to pitch at the major league level.

Our View: Penny got rocked in his start on Saturday against the Blue Jays, just one day after Buchholz had relatively little trouble with the same lineup. With Dice-K lurking as well, it seems like a smart move to move Penny before he struggles enough to lose trade value.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 7/18, 3:26 PM CT
Brad Penny got shelled by the Blue Jays on Saturday, allowing six earned runs in just five innings as Boston lost 6-2 at home.

Our View: Penny had lowered his ERA from 5.85 on June 5 to just 4.71 recently, but saw it balloon to over five again on Saturday. He is a decent option in AL-only leagues, but a fringe player in most mixed formats. He's just as liable to get hit hard as he is to throw six scoreless innings.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 7/9, 10:09 PM CT
Brad Penny gave up three earned runs on six hits over five innings in Thursday's 8-6 loss to the Royals at Fenway Park. He had one walk and one strikeout.

Our View: Penny ended the night with a no-decision, and is winless over his last four starts. He has a 4.71 ERA for the season, and is only an option for deeper fantasy leagues for his next start.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 7/4, 4:45 PM CT
Brad Penny was solid on the Fourth of July, striking out six in six innings while surrendering only two runs, but took a no-decision as the Red Sox lost 3-2 to the Mariners.

Our View: Penny has lowered his ERA to 4.67 from 6.69 on May 14, on is worth a roster spot in deeper mixed or AL-only leagues.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 6/28, 3:51 PM CT
Brad Penny pitched very well on Sunday, but was handed his third loss of the season. He allowed just two runs on six hits over six innings, but the Red Sox fell 2-1 to the Braves.

Our View: Penny only struck out two, but did not walk a man in Sunday's outing. He's now put together four decent starts in a row, but has failed to go beyond 6.1 innings the entire season.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 6/23, 9:52 PM CT
Brad Penny gave up three earned runs on six hits over 5.2 innings in Tuesday's 11-3 win at Washington. He had three walks and fired six strikeouts.

Our View: The game was tied 3-3 when Penny exited, so he takes a no-decision rather than a win. He remains at 6-2 for the season.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 6/19, 10:34 AM CT
Brad Penny is still likely to get moved at some point before the trade deadline, but according to the New Hampshire Union Leader it may not be for awhile. The Red Sox are comfortable going with a six-man rotation for the time being, mainly because it will allow them to ease in and evaluate John Smoltz before they get rid of Penny.

Our View: With the trade market being pretty slim at this point, the Sox feel like they are best served to keep Penny in the rotation as an insurance policy for Smoltz. As teams start to transition from neutral to buyers and sellers, the Red Sox will then look to unload Penny assuming Smoltz holds up. Penny owners should be prepared for a move, but not as quickly as everyone originally thought.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 6/18, 8:09 AM CT
The Boston Globe is reporting that several teams sent scouts to watch Brad Penny in his start on Wednesday against the Marlins. The two teams believed to be most interested are the Rangers and Phillies.

Our View: Penny pitched fairly well in what amounts to an audition for other clubs last night, and it looks like he will be dealt sooner rather than later. He could be a nice addition in either Texas or Philly, but don't be shocked if one or more other teams make a play for him as well. The effect a trade will have on his fantasy value will be determined by which team he goes to, so check back after a deal is struck.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 6/17, 9:44 PM CT
Brad Penny improved to 6-2 on the season with a 6-1 win over the Marlins on Wednesday. He only threw five innings, gave up three hits, and walked four batters in the victory. He gave up only one unearned run.

Our View: Despite the four walks in only five innings, Penny improved his trade value tonight. The Red Sox have fielded a lot of calls for the starter, and something should happen soon.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 6/14, 2:14 PM CT
The Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox have received multiple trade offers for starter Brad Penny. He will be eligible to be traded on Monday.

Our View: John Smoltz is on the verge of returning to the rotation and Penny seems to be the most likely player to be moved. Penny said earlier in the week that he has no interest in pitching out of the bullpen. Opposing hitters are batting .305 off of Penny this season, leading to a 5.32 ERA and 1.56 WHIP. The Cardinals, Mets and Phillies have been linked to recent trade rumors surrounding him.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 6/12, 3:57 PM CT
Sports Illustrated is reporting that the Cardinals, Mets and Phillies all have interest in Red Sox starting pitcher Brad Penny.

Our View: The Sox want to move Penny to make room in the rotation for John Smoltz. Penny may have hurt his trade value earlier this week, however, when he told the Providence Journal he has no interest in going into Boston's bullpen. This reduces Boston's leverage when it comes to dealing the burly righty. Still, most of the teams after him are probably desperate enough to give the Sox what they want, and chances are slim that he finishes the month in a Boston uniform.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 6/12, 9:13 AM CT
Brad Penny told the Providence Journal that he has no interest in moving to the bullpen to make room for John Smoltz, who is expected to return to the team next week. Penny is the most likely candidate to move, but the Red Sox have been actively shopping him to other teams. If Penny can't be moved before Smoltz returns, expect him to make the move to the pen.

Our View: After a stellar outing in his start last night, Penny's trade value appears to be at an all-time high right now. The Red Sox are going to have to do something with Penny when Smoltz returns, so expect them to work hard to try to move him since he has no desire to move to the bullpen. His fantasy value rests upon him remaining a starter, so if he stays in a Sox' uniform for a few more weeks his value will take a big hit.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 6/11, 10:56 PM CT
Brad Penny threw well in Thursday's 4-3 win over the rival Yankees at Fenway Park, as he only allowed six hits over six scoreless innings. He issued one walk and fired five strikeouts.

Our View: Penny left the game with a 1-0 lead, but the Yankees scored three runs in the seventh inning, forcing Penny to take a no-decision rather than a much-deserved win. This outing should improve his stock if the Sox decide to deal him, which has been suggested in rumors.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 6/5, 10:02 PM CT
Brad Penny had a tough outing in Friday's 5-1 loss to the Rangers at Fenway Park, as he gave up five earned runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings. He had two walks and five strikeouts.

Our View: Penny only took his second loss of the season, with his previous loss coming back on May 3 at Tampa Bay. Only 59 of his 103 pitches landed for strikes tonight.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 6/5, 6:25 PM CT
Brad Penny is reportedly on the Phillies' radar, according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.

Our View: The Red Sox would want infield prospect Jason Donald in exchange for Penny. The Phillies covet pitching help with Brett Myers (torn labrum) likely done for the season.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 6/5, 1:40 PM CT
ESPN's Buster Olney is reporting that the Braves have interest in acquiring Brad Penny.

Our View: After releasing Tom Glavine and calling up prospect Tommy Hanson, the Braves are apparently still looking to improve their rotation. Penny has struggled at times this season, but has recently been throwing well, and would be a much better fantasy fit in Atlanta, as Turner Field is much more pitcher friendly park than Fenway.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 6/5, 12:31 PM CT
The Providence Journal is reporting that there is a good chance tonight's Red Sox game could be rained out. Brad Penny is scheduled to start.

Our View: Stay tuned for updates.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 5/30, 3:14 PM CT
Brad Penny allowed 10 hits in six innings as Boston fell 5-3 to Toronto on Saturday. He did not walk a batter and only gave up two earned runs. He did not factor into the decision.

Our View: Penny has allowed 70 hits in 54.1 innings of work this season and his WHIP is up to 1.60. The Red Sox would prefer to trade him as John Smoltz is due to come back in a couple of weeks and they may not have space on their pitching staff for Penny.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 5/21, 2:49 PM CT
Jayson Stark of ESPN states that the Red Sox are open to listening to offers for Brad Penny.

Our View: The Red Sox could afford to let him go as they have several strong prospects in the minors like Clay Buchholz and Justin Masterson. The Phillies, Indians and Mets could all be interested in Penny. The White Sox could garner interest as well if Jake Peavy rejects their trade.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 5/20, 11:36 PM CT
Brad Penny moved to 4-1 on the year with his win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday. Penny went 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out two.

Our View: Penny is starting to pitch a bit better as of late, but his ERA is still at 6.07 on the year. If he starts pitching like this on a regular basis, he could have some value pitching for a good team like the Sox, but right now he is AL-only worthy at best.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 5/14, 7:21 PM CT
Brad Penny put forth a very pedestrian outing for the Red Sox on Thursday, but he did not factor into the decision as the Sox lost to the Angels in 12 innings. Penny went 6.1 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out four.

Our View: Not bad, but not great for Penny. His ERA is still sky high, but his team is giving him plenty of support. His value is probably limited to AL-only until he gets the ERA down, but if he doesn't he may lose all value.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 5/8, 11:12 PM CT
Brad Penny has a quality start on Friday and earned his third victory of the season in Boston's 7-3 win over the Rays. He allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks over 6.1 innings.

Our View: Penny hasn't been good this season, but Boston's offense has been good to him. He is now 3-1, but is sporting a 6.90 ERA. He has also only struck out 16 in 30 innings this year.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 5/3, 5:38 PM CT
Brad Penny gave the Red Sox a quality start on Sunday, but it wasn't enough as they fell to the Rays 5-3. Penny allowed three runs on six hits and two walks over six innings and took the loss. On the bright side, he struck out eight.

Our View: Penny wasn't great on Sunday, but he was much better than he has been most of the season. It was especially nice to see him rack up some strikeouts. Coming into the game he had only fanned six in 17.2 innings. If this is a sign of things to come Penny could be a hot waiver pick up in the near future in mixed leagues.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 4/22, 9:47 PM CT
Brad Penny picked up his second win of the season on Wednesday as the Red Sox beat the Twins 7-3 in the second game of heir doubleheader. Penny went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out two and walking one.

Our View: Penny pitched well, but he has been far from impressive so far this season. His strikeout total of five in three starts is shocking, and he just doesn't appear to be the same pitcher he once was. He is 2-0, however, and will likely continue to get wins pitching for the Red Sox.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 4/17, 10:31 PM CT
Brad Penny struggled badly in Friday's outing against the Orioles. He allowed six hits and eight runs over three innings. Penny also walked five batters.

Our View: The Orioles lineup has been hot recently, but that doesn't excuse the awful outing and five walks. Penny still has a long ways to go before he earns our trust.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 4/11, 7:50 PM CT
Brad Penny was solid, but unspectacular in his first start of the season. He allowed three runs on five hits and two walks over six innings and earned the win as Boston topped Anaheim 5-4 Saturday.

Our View: Penny wasn't great, but was certainly better that his 6.27 ERA season of 2008. Watch to see how he fares over the next few starts before banking on him as one of your top five starters. His health is always an issue, but the win and quality start today were a nice bonus.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 4/6, 11:57 AM CT
Brad Penny's turn in Boston's rotation will be bumped up from April 12 to April 11 following the postponement of their matchup against Tampa Bay on Monday, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: The postponement pushes Josh Beckett's start back to tomorrow, and thus, his originally scheduled start on April 11 would have only been on four days of rest, so Penny gets moved up a day as a result. Penny is still set to face Anaheim, so this news shouldn't alter your plans if you planned on having him active in your lineup this weekend.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 4/3, 6:42 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Boston starter Brad Penny will fly back to Fort Myers, Florida, to pitch in a camp game after Monday's season opener.

Our View: Penny's turn in the rotation does not come around until April 12, so the Sox are sending him back to spring camp to get some extra work in.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 4/1, 9:31 AM CT
The Boston Herald reports that Brad Penny is confident that he will be able to man the fifth spot in the Red Sox rotation and make that scheduled start on April 12. He will throw his final spring training game on Thursday and be evaluated afterwards. If all appears well with his shoulder, he would likely be named the Red Sox fifth starter.

Our View: Clay Buchholz is in the mix as well, and he has had a very good spring. If Penny does experience any problems with his shoulder, he will likely start the season on the DL.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 3/29, 9:10 AM CT
The Red Sox are yet to name their fifth starter in the rotation, and want to evaluate Brad Penny, according to the Boston Globe. Skipper Terry Francona said, "You do not want to rush into something because there is an arbitrary date. We need a pitcher, but we do not want to make a mistake, either. Penny has been great about buying into everything. We will continue to talk to him and see how he is progressing."

Our View: Penny was hindered by shoulder fatique earlier in spring training, but felt great in his first start last Monday when he worked three innings. Either Penny or Clay Buchholz will be the No. 5 starter. Justin Masterson will hold a role in the bullpen.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 3/25, 7:53 AM CT
Brad Penny reported no issues a day after his first spring start, according to the Boston Globe. He has been dealing with a sore shoulder. Skipper Terry Francona said, "He is upbeat and he is feeling good about himself, as he should."

Our View: This is encouraging, and Penny is worth a look as a flier for AL-only leagues. Penny went 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 2007 prior to suffering through an injury-spoiled 2008 campaign.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 3/23, 3:30 PM CT
Brad Penny did not allow any runs or hits over three innings in Monday's 7-6 win over Detroit, with one walk and three strikeouts.

Our View: This was a strong Grapefruit League debut for Penny, who has been recovering from a sore shoulder. He remains a risky fantasy option, but is worth targeting in AL-only leagues as a flier.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 3/22, 8:18 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Brad Penny will make his Grapefruit League debut on Monday.

Our View: Penny's shoulder has been a concern ever since his poor 2008 performance with the Dodgers. He will be given a very good chance to make the Red Sox rotation, but his durability figures to once again be an issue in 2009.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 3/19, 7:20 AM CT
Brad Penny reportedly looked great during a throwing session in a minor league game Wednesday, according to the Providence Journal. He threw three scoreless innings, with four strikeouts. He feels like he is ready to pitch for the first week of the regular season and he said, "Yeah, I think I am. I mean, I feel like it, so, that is not my decision, so I am going to listen to their program and go along with them."

Our View: This is encouraging news, regarding the possibility that his weak shoulder will be strong enough when it is his turn to pitch in the rotation, around April 10 or 11. He will next pitch against the Tigers on March 23, and he will namely need to build his pitch count up.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 3/17, 8:55 AM CT
Brad Penny, who is recovering from a sore shoulder, is slated to throw one more minor league game on Wednesday, according to the Boston Globe. Barring a setback, he would pitch in his first major league game five days later.

Our View: Penny will remain a risky fantasy prospect, but will have a chance to succeed if healthy, with a solid supporting cast and while playing his home games at pitcher-friendly Fenway Park.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 3/11, 8:20 AM CT
Brad Penny is progressing in his recovery from a sore shoulder, according to the Boston Globe. He threw 20 pitches in live batting practice Tuesday, and pitching coach John Farrell said it was "another encouraging step" toward making his spring debut.

Our View: He was pitching at around 90-95 capacity, and will throw a simulated game to minor leaguers on Friday. Barring a setback, Penny could make his Grapefruit League debut in the middle of next week.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 3/10, 8:47 AM CT
Brad Penny will throw live batting practice today, and not Thursday as was previously stated by the club, according to the Boston Globe. Skipper Terry Francona simply got the days mixed up.

Our View: If his session goes fine without any issues regarding his sore shoulder, Penny could move on to pitching a simulated game. The Red Sox remain uncertain if he will be ready for the start of the season.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 3/9, 11:34 AM CT
Brad Penny is scheduled to throw live batting practice on Thursday, and if all goes well, he could pitch in a simulated game one week later, the Providence Journal reports. The Red Sox aren't sure if Penny will be ready for the start of the season. He coming off a sore shoulder that limited him in 2008.

Our View: The Red Sox may not need to use their No. 5 starter until around May 12, so Penny still has a lot of time to ramp up. For now, it's simply good news to know he is headed in the right direction.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 3/8, 12:25 PM CT
Brad Penny fared fine in Sunday's bullpen session, according to the Providence Journal. He did not throw very hard, but he said, "Today was probably the best I have felt overall."

Our View: This is encouraging, and marks the first time he pitched off a mound in a week. He would be worth a look as a late-round flier in case he can bounce back with better health after suffering through shoulder problems in 2008.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 3/8, 8:39 AM CT
Brad Penny will throw around 35 pitches in a bullpen session today, according to the Boston Globe. He was scratched from his start on Thursday due to fatigue in his right shoulder.

Our View: He battled shoulder problems last season, which compromised his velocity. He would be worth a look as a late-round flier, in case he can bounce back with better health in 2009.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 3/6, 9:35 AM CT
Brad Penny is going to have his ailing shoulder examined by Dr. Tom Gill, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Terry Francona noted that his visit with Dr. Gill is precautionary, and the skipper is not overly concerned with Penny's shoulder. We will keep you posted on his status.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 3/3, 12:34 PM CT
Brad Penny has been pushed back, according to MLB.com. Penny felt some fatigue in his shoulder on Sunday, and will no longer pitch Thursday against Team Puerto Rico. He will throw off flat ground and focus on strengthening his shoulder for the time being.

Our View: Penny stated that the current fatigue in his shoulder is not close to the the pain that limited him to only 94.2 innings in 2008. Justin Masterson, Clay Buchholz and Michael Bowden are all capable of filling his spot in the rotation if Penny is not ready to go at the start of the season.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 2/28, 8:41 AM CT
Brad Penny is pain-free, according to the Boston Globe. Penny did not experience any pain in his right shoulder Thursday when he threw 40 pitches of live batting practice, which was his most work so far of the spring.

Our View: Penny is slated to pitch in a game for the first time Thursday, against Puerto Rico's World Baseball Classic club. Barring a setback, he is worth a look as a late-round flier in case he can put his disappointing 2008 campaign behind him.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 2/23, 11:03 AM CT
Brad Penny threw his first live batting practice of spring camp today, according to the Providence Journal. He was reportedly throwing at around 75 percent, but received a positive reaction from onlookers. He battled arm issues last season.

Our View: Penny has been feeling good physically so far, and is worth targeting as a late-round flier in case he can bounce back and put his disappointing 2008 campaign behind him.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 2/11, 12:56 PM CT
Red Sox right-hander Brad Penny does not have limitations on his throwing, and feels good physically, reports the Boston Globe.

Our View: Penny is coming off a tumultuous year in L.A. while he was dealing with shoulder problems. If healthy, he can be of some use to fantasy owners, if his previous success is an indication of what he could possibly accomplish.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 1/9, 5:20 PM CT
The AP reports that the contract between Brad Penny and the Red Sox has been finalized. The deal is for one season and $5 million, plus incentives.

Our View: Penny will be given the chance to start in a rotation with Josh Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Jon Lester and Tim Wakefield. Last season injuries held him to just 94.2 innings, a 6.27 ERA, and a 6-9 record, though the is a relatively cheap risk for the club to take. The likely addition of John Smoltz means that Boston may have the luxury of using a six-man rotation by mid-season if the club chooses to give their hurlers a break, though it remains to be seen if the team would really go that route.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 12/28, 8:14 PM CT
The Boston Herald confirms that the Red Sox have signed free agent pitcher Brad Penny to a one-year deal worth $5 million. The report says that there are numerous performance bonuses included in the contract.

Our View: Penny had a good five straight seasons prior to 2008 when injuries held him to just 94.2 inings. He had a 6.27 ERA and a 6-9 record last season with the Dodgers. A healthy season in Boston would make him a nice addition to round out your fantasy rotations.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 12/28, 4:27 PM CT
Fox Sports reports that the Red Sox and free agent Brad Penny are nearing a one-year deal. The deal would likely allow Boston to keep Justin Masterson in the bullpen and be patient with Clay Bucholz's development.

Our View: Penny had a good five straight seasons prior to 2008 when injuries held him to just 94.2 inings. He had a 6.27 ERA and a 6-9 record last season with the Dodgers. A healthy season in Boston would make him a nice addition to round out your fantasy rotations.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 12/27, 10:59 AM CT
Free-agent pitcher Brad Penny is getting close to making a decision on where he will pitch next season, and the Red Sox and Cardinals are two of his potential landing spots, reports Buster Olney of ESPN.com.

Our View: Penny battled through injures last season and was wholly ineffective, but he can be an asset when healthy. Think of him as a legitimate fantasy option when drafts roll around if it is determined he has his health.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 12/11, 7:00 AM CT
The Rockies have decided not to pursue Brad Penny, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: The club was trying to add starter Tim Redding, but concerns regarding Willy Taverez's leg threw a wrench into the deal. Penny also has injury concerns, and the Rockies do not want to take a gamble on him.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 11/14, 10:42 AM CT
Brad Penny is reportedly on the Jays' radar in case they cannot bring back AJ Burnett, according to the Globe and Mail.

Our View: The health of Penny's shoulder remains a concern for the Dodgers, which is why they declined his 2009 option. Toronto could be looking to sign him at a value price if their bid to keep Burnett is unsuccessful.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 11/5, 4:35 PM CT
The AP reports that the Los Angeles Dodgers have notified Brad Penny they will buy out his contract option for next season, making the former All-Star Game starter a free agent. Penny started 17 games last season and missed significant time because of a sore shoulder. Late-season tests showed no structural damage in the shoulder. He left the club in late September, so was absent for its playoff run, further souring his relationship with Dodgers management.

Our View: While Penny was due only $9.25 million in 2009 and twice won 16 games for the Dodgers, most recently in 2007, the player and the team were at odds late in the season over the club’s refusal to negotiate an extension. He has some value, and he'll likely sign a one-year deal in hopes of proving himself worthy of a richer long-term deal.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 10/22, 9:27 AM CT
The Red Sox are reportedly monitoring Brad Penny, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View: Penny will become a free agent after the Dodgers decline his 2009 option for $8.75 million. He battled shoulder problems, and ended the season with a poor 6.27 ERA and 1.63 WHIP over 19 games.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 9/26, 9:58 AM CT
Brad Penny cleaned out his locker and was nowhere to be found on Thursday, according to the Los Angeles Times. "I didn't get a chance to say hello or goodbye," manager Joe Torre said. "He was here yesterday and he disappeared. I didn't ask him to leave."

Our View: Apparently Penny thinks that being placed on the 60-day DL means you have been released from the club. This is yet another classless act by a guy who has been dogged by his own ego and selfishness for most of his career. It certainly won't lead to the team exercising their $9.25 million option on him next season.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 9/25, 10:22 AM CT
Dodgers hurler Brad Penny has been moved to the 60-day disabled list in order to clear up a spot on the 40-man roster for Rafael Furcal, according to the L.A. Times.

Our View: This officially ends Penny's season, though it was always considered a long shot for him to come back and pitch. The Dodgers hold an option on him for next year, but are considering simply paying him the $2 million it would cost them to buy out his deal.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 9/20, 8:30 PM CT
Brad Penny is likely done for the season, according to the LA Daily News. After receiving a cortisone shot in his AC joint yesterday, Penny tried to throw today and felt discomfort. Manager Joe Torre stated that Penny is "out of the mix."

Our View: Torre added that it would be tough to add Penny to the Dodgers' postseason roster, if there is one.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 9/12, 10:14 AM CT
Brad Penny is not content with pitching out of the bullpen and wants to start in the rotation again this season and is confident he can regain his All-Star form, according to the LA Times.

Our View: Even if he does make it back into the rotation, he is unlikely to make a solid fantasy impact with only a few weeks to go in the season.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 9/10, 8:49 PM CT
Though he will pitch out of the pen now that he is back from the DL, manager Joe Torre would not rule out using Brad Penny out of the starting rotation if the Dodgers make the playoffs, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

Our View: Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Why don't we see if he can throw strikes and emerge without pain before we get all crazy and say he could start in the playoffs. For that matter, why don't we also make sure they make the playoffs. The bottom line here is that Penny likely will have no fantasy value the rest of the season.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 9/9, 12:24 PM CT
Brad Penny, who is dealing with right shoulder inflammation, threw a 30-pitch simulated game Monday and is slated for a bullpen session Wednesday, according to the LA Times. Manager Joe Torre said, "I talked to him about coming out of the bullpen. The way we've used the bullpen, the more the merrier."

Our View: Torre noted that Penny would have a "touch and feel" session Wednesday, putting him in line for a return two days later. Penny would enter games at the start of innings, easing fears that he had of having to warm up multiple times and risking injury. His fantasy value looks to be minimal.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 9/7, 5:05 PM CT
There is a possibility that Dodgers hurler Brad Penny will be back with the team after next weekend, according to Dodgers.com. Penny threw a bullpen session on Friday and is scheduled to throw two more before being activated.

Our View: Penny will come out of the 'pen when he returns, so his fantasy value will likely be minimal.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 9/6, 4:08 PM CT
Joe Torre expressed optimism that Brad Penny will return in September but did not give a timetable. When he does return, he will pitch out of the Dodgers' bullpen according to the Los Angeles Times.

Our View: Penny should be effective in this new role. He has the arm strength to throw serious heat and the repretoire to keep batters guessing. However, he is experiencing his worst season ever and does not likely hold much fantasy impact over the final month.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 9/5, 10:56 AM CT
Brad Penny, who is recovering from right shoulder inflammation, threw a bullpen session Thursday and is optimistic he can return to the Dodgers this season as a reliever, according to the LA Times.

Our View: He has a shot to return, but may not be able to make a solid enough impact to merit keeping him on fantasy rosters as a reliever.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 9/1, 8:53 PM CT
Brad Penny (shoulder) has been throwing off of flat ground, but he still hasn't thrown off the mound yet, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Penny is hoping to make it back to add some help out of the bullpen, but considering how poor he looked when he came off the DL last time, we aren't holding out any hope of him being a useful fantasy arm the rest of the way.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 8/17, 2:43 PM CT
Dodgers' GM Ned Colletti has not ruled out Brad Penny (right shoulder inflammation) returning to the team this season as a reliever, according to the LA Daily News. Colletti said, "We could get him back in the bullpen. Who knows? Even if it does take that long to rehab, if we can get him healthy. I don't know if we have enough information right now to be saying anything definitive."

Our View: A move to the bullpen would require less rehab time than if he tried to return to the rotation, but he is a longshot to return either way at this point.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 8/17, 9:14 AM CT
Manager Joe Torre commented that Brad Penny is likely out for the rest of the season, according to the LA Times. Penny is dealing with right shoulder inflammation and Torre said, "I can't think Penny's going to be back. Nothing anybody has said makes me say that. It's off what happened this year."

Our View: Penny was still aiming to return this season, but fantasy owners should no longer be waiting for him.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 8/16, 11:53 PM CT
Brad Penny received the results of his latest MRI. He has increased scar tissue in the front of his right shoulder. It is impinging on his rotator cuff tendon and causing inflammation, the Los Angeles Daily News reports. Penny will rest until at least Tuesday and be re-evaluated early next week. He may not be back this season.

Our View: It's been a lost year for Penny, and it doesn't sound like fantasy owners have any reason to hold out hope for help in September.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 8/16, 8:18 PM CT
Manager Joe Torre doesn't expect pitcher Brad Penny to return this year. "Nothing anybody has said to me makes me say that," Torre tells the Los Angeles Daily News. "It's just (based) off what has happened this year. He did his time on the DL and did the slow process of coming back, of rehab and all that. There just seems to be something that just doesn't feel right, I guess."

Our View: Penny has made only two starts since June 14 due to right shoulder problems, and it sounds like fantasy owners shouldn't be counting on him to help them in September.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 8/14, 7:43 PM CT
Brad Penny made his way to the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation, two starts after coming off the DL with right shoulder tendinitis, according to Dodgers.com.

Our View: Penny has not been anything like the pitcher fantasy owners had come to know. He was just 6-9 with a 6.05 ERA on the season.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 8/9, 12:22 AM CT
Brad Penny pitched very well holding the Giants to just one hit and one run in five innings of work in his first start back from the DL as he ended a personal seven game losing streak with the victory.

Our View: Penny walked three and didn’t strike out a batter while throwing 76 pitches. Penny was throwing 87-90 mph on most his fastballs on this night, so that 98 mph stuff he supposedly had in his last minor league outing is highly dubious. Don’t give him too much credit either, he was facing the lowly Giants.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 8/7, 12:41 PM CT
Brad Penny is set to be activated from the DL to start Friday against the Giants, according to the AP. He has recovered from mild tendinitis in his right shoulder.

Our View: Penny will be a welcome addition back to the Dodgers' rotation, but fantasy owners should wait until he proves to be effective again before returning him to lineups. He held a 5-9 record with a 5.88 ERA and 1.60 WHIP over 15 starts prior to landing on the DL.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 8/5, 8:19 PM CT
Dodgers starter Brad Penny said he expects to be ready to make a Friday night return from the disabled list in San Francisco, according to MLB.com. Penny came out of his Saturday night rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas in Oklahoma City feeling fine after six weeks on the disabled list with shoulder tendinitis.

Our View: Penny reports everything is good to go and we expect he will be back on the mound later this week. The Dodgers could use his arm if he can keep throwing strikes, though fantasy owners would be wise to approach with caution.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 8/3, 5:36 PM CT
Brad Penny will indeed return to action for the Dodgers this Friday to face the Giants, and he will be allowed to throw as many as 90 pitches, according to MLB.com. The team will remove Jason Johnson from the starting rotation.

Our View: Penny, who has been out since June 15th with right shoulder soreness, threw 44 strikes on 55 pitches in a Triple-A start on Sunday, and reported hit 98 mph on the radar gun. With the way that the Giants are hitting, Penny makes a decent starting option this coming week.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 7/30, 8:48 AM CT
Brad Penny's timetable has been changed and he is now scheduled to come off the DL next Friday, according to the LA Times.

Our View: Basically his rehab assignment has been shortened from two games to one, so that the Dodgers can use Monday's off day to give Penny and Hiroki Kuroda extra rest prior to their scheduled starts next week during a six-game trip. Penny is scheduled to pitch for triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday before pitching for the Dodgers on five days' rest Friday in San Francisco against the Giants.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 7/29, 1:35 PM CT
The LA Times reports that right-hander Brad Penny , recovering from shoulder tendinitis, is scheduled to start a two-game rehabilitation assignment Wednesday with Class-A Inland Empire.

Our View: He will throw 45 pitches and at some point finish his assignment with a start for Triple-A Las Vegas, putting him on track to pitch for the Dodgers Aug. 9 at San Francisco.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 7/28, 9:05 PM CT
The schedule for the return to the starting rotation of disabled Dodgers pitcher Brad Penny has been pushed back a few days, according to MLB.com. Penny, out since June 15 with shoulder tendinitis and bursitis, threw a bullpen session Monday and will make a 45-pitch Minor League rehabilitation start at Class A Inland Empire on Wednesday. According to manager Joe Torre, Penny tentatively will make another rehab start Aug. 4 for Triple-A Las Vegas in New Orleans.

Our View: Penny will be out nearly two months before he gets back to the Dodgers. Hopefully the rest has rejuvenated him as he had been having a very disappointing season thru his first 15 starts. The Dodgers look to play in plenty of big games down the stretch as they contend for the NL West title.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 7/27, 9:44 AM CT
Brad Penny threw close to 50 pitches in a simulated game on Saturday as he continues to recover from mild tendinitis in his right shoulder, according to the LA Times. Penny will have a side session Monday or Tuesday, after which he will be sent to the minors for a rehab assignment.

Our View: He did not report any issues during his session Saturday, and remains on pace to return to the Dodgers in early August. He could provide a boost to fantasy lineups during the stretch run at the playoffs, and should remain stashed away until he returns.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 7/22, 10:27 AM CT
Brad Penny, who is recovering from mild tendinitis in his right shoulder, will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, according to the AP.

Our View: Penny has also been scheduled for a minor league rehab start next weekend, and could be activated from the DL in early August. He could provide a boost to fantasy lineups during the stretch run at the playoffs, and should remain stashed away until he returns.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 7/20, 9:45 AM CT
Brad Penny, who is recovering from mild tendinitis in his right shoulder, throw a 40-pitch bullpen session on Saturday, according to the LA Times. He said he was pain-free following the outing.

Our View: Penny is scheduled to throw on the side again on Tuesday. He could provide a boost to fantasy lineups during the stretch run at the playoffs, but the Dodgers are yet to reveal a timetable for his return.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 7/12, 11:20 AM CT
Brad Penny intends to start a throwing program next week, according to the LA Times. He is going to be cautious with his return to the Dodgers and said, "Since we are right in contention for first place, I'd rather take a little more time and come back fresh."

Our View: He received a cortisone shot last Monday in his ailing right shoulder, which prevented him from pitching since May 14. Fantasy owners need to be patient with him, but he could provide a boost down the stretch when he will be needed the most. Keep him reserved if you have him on your roster.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 7/9, 8:52 AM CT
Brad Penny, who is recovering from mild tendinitis in his right shoulder, isn't expected to be sent on a minor league rehab assignment until after the All-Star break, according to the LA Times.

Our View: Penny received a cortisone injection in his stiff right shoulder, which has prevented him from pitching since May 14.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 7/5, 8:10 PM CT
Brad Penny will not return from his injured shoulder before the All-Start break, according to MLB.com. Penny had to be removed from a simulated game on Saturday as his shoulder began to bother him yet again. "He stopped himself. He felt something in the back of the shoulder," said manager Joe Torre. "He didn't do anything on that particular pitch, but all of a sudden something was weird."

Our View: The team will send him for an exam on Monday, and while no one seemed overly concerned that this setback was major, it just goes to show you that Penny isn't someone that should be counted on to return to form quickly. Regardless, he is out until after the All-Star break.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 7/3, 1:04 PM CT
Brad Penny will not take the mound on Sturday for the Dodgers, reports the L.A. Daily News. He experienced "command issues" and won't likely be activated until Wednesday or Thursday of next week.

Our View: Penny continues to frustrate fantasy owners who have stuck by him through a mostly disastrous season. It's difficult to envision Penny finishing the year strong.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 7/2, 10:36 AM CT
Brad Penny threw 50 pitches to hitters in a three-inning simulated game at Minute Maid Park on Tuesday, according to the LA Times.

Our View: The big right-hander is on track to rejoin the rotation Saturday in San Francisco.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 6/30, 11:08 AM CT
Brad Penny, who is battling mild tendinitis in his right shoulder, is scheduled to return to the Dodgers' rotation on Saturday, according to the LA Times.

Our View: He will throw a shortened simulated game on Tuesday, and he will start Saturday if he doesn't experience any issues related to his shoulder following the session. Penny would take the place of Chan Ho Park in the six-man rotation that the Dodgers will use until the All-Star break.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 6/29, 9:16 AM CT
Brad Penny, who is recovering from tendinitis in his right shoulder, threw a successful 70-pitch bullpen session on Saturday, according to the LA Times. He said, "I threw the ball as hard as I could. It feels like I've got a new arm."

Our View: He didn't feel any discomfort in his shoulder and is confident he will return to the Dodgers before the All-Star break. His next step will be to pitch in a shortened simulated game some time during the four-game series against the Astros.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 6/27, 9:00 AM CT
Brad Penny won't pitch in a simulated game Saturday as originally planned, according to the Los Angeles Times. Penny felt discomfort after throwing a side session Wednesday.

Our View: According to Dodgers' pitching coach Rick Honeycutt, Penny will throw Saturday but not to live hitters. No word on a return date for the big right-hander.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 6/25, 8:20 PM CT
Brad Penny had a successful throwing session on Wednesday and will move on to throw a simulated game on Saturday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The team believes Penny will be able to return to the club next week, but he might need to make at least one start in the minors to test his sore shoulder before given the green light to start with the big league club.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 6/25, 12:30 PM CT
The Press Enterprise reports that Brad Penny will throw off a mound on Wednesday. It will be his first time back on the mound since developing pain in his shoulder.

Our View: Penny has thrown on flat ground and insists that the pain was only an issue when throwing off a mound. He is 5-9 with a 5.88 ERA.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 6/21, 4:28 PM CT
Brad Penny played catch Saturday for the first time since going on the DL with mild tendinitis in his right shoulder, according to MLB.com. Penny is eligible to be activated June 30.

Our View: We'll let you know if Brad feels any soreness tomorrow after the session.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 6/17, 3:24 PM CT
Brad Penny has been placed on the 15-day DL due to inflammation and tendinitis in his right shoulder, according to MLB.com. In an adjoining move, left-hander Eric Stults was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Our View: The DL move is retroactive to June 14. Stults will likely cover Penny's next scheduled start, on Friday against the Indians.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 6/16, 11:20 PM CT
Brad Penny had an MRI on his ailing shoulder and the good news is that no structural damage was found, according to MLB.com. Penny will miss his next scheduled start on Friday, but beyond that there is no word.

Our View: Chan Ho Park will likely make the start or the team could turn to Eric Stults of Triple-A. Regardless, Penny could still be headed for the DL as he has looked like a pitching machine of late, so even if there isn't a serious problem he would likely benefit from some time off.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 6/16, 8:49 AM CT
Manager Joe Torre is thinking about a backup plan for his rotation in case Brad Penny's MRI results on his ailing shoulder rule him out for his next start (on Friday), according to the LA Times.

Our View: Torre does not want to disrupt the rhythm of his middle-relievers, so he will likely look to the farm system for his potential spot starter for Friday. Lefty Eric Stults of Triple-A Las Vegas is believed to be the top candidate for the spot, but Torre also mentioned team-mate Jason Johnson and James McDonald of Double-A.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 6/15, 7:19 AM CT
According to the Los Angeles Times, Brad knew something was wrong with his right shoulder when warming up for his Saturday start against the Tigers. Penny confirmed this when he lasted only 3.2 innings in the Dodgers' 12-7 loss to the Detroit Tigers giving up seven runs on seven hits. The right-hander was immediately booked for a return flight to Los Angeles today to be examined by team physician Neal ElAttrache.

Our View: The probable candidate to take the rotation spot of Penny would be left-hander Hong-Chih Kuo, who has posted a 3-1 record and 2.01 ERA primarily as a middle reliever. Chan Ho Park would also probably be considered, though mild discomfort in his shoulder made him unavailable to pitch out of the bullpen Saturday. Torre has said that he would be more inclined to start Kuo than Park because Kuo is more economical with his pitches.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 6/14, 6:14 PM CT
Dodger RHP Brad Penny continues to struggle, today suffering another loss as the Tigers took LA to task, 12-7. Penny lasted just 3 2/3 innings today, giving up seven runs (all earned) on seven hits with two walks and no strikeouts, including two homers surrendered.

Our View: That gives Penny five consecutive losses and seven in his last eight outings (the eighth resulting in no decision). In that time he has surrendered 19 walks versus 27 strikeouts.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 6/8, 10:25 PM CT
Dodger RHP Brad Penny suffered his eighth loss of the season as LA fell 3-1 to the Cubs. Penny pitched six innings to allow three runs (all earned) on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Our View: Penny is on a serious slide, suffering five losses over his last six outings, allowing 32 earned runs along the way.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 6/4, 12:16 AM CT
Dodger RHP Brad Penny put forth a valiant effort for his team this evening, but his team failed to support the cause as the Dodgers fell to the Rockies, 3-0. Penny pitched six innings to allow two runs (both earned) on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

Our View: Penny has now suffered five losses in his last six starts, with a no-decision in the other.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 5/29, 10:03 PM CT
Brad Penny was roughed up yet again Thursday as he allowed eight hits, three walks, and five runs over four innings to fall to 5-6.

Our View: If you have children, tell them to avert their eyes. Over his last five starts Penny is 0-4 with a 9.43 ERA and 1.92 WHIP. He is clearly injured or so far messed up mechanically that he would take a Barry Zito line, and that isn't good. Penny should have been on your bench for at least the last three starts, and he should remain there until he hurls at least one gem, preferably two.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 5/29, 10:41 AM CT
Brad Penny has been struggling and will look to bounce back tonight when the Dodgers battle the Mets, according to the Sports Network. Penny is 0-3 over his last four starts, while allowing 24 runs over 23.2 innings.

Our View: One of those losses came against the Mets, when he got rocked for 10 runs over 4.2 innings on May 7. Keep him on your bench if you have a better option for your rotation.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 5/20, 12:03 AM CT
Brad Penny allowed five runs on nine hits and four walks over five innings to pick up a no-decision for the Dodgers on Monday night.

Our View: If you're standing, sit down before you read this next line. Over his last three starts, Penny has allowed 28 hits, eight walks and 20 runs in 15.2 IP, which translates to a 11.49 ERA and 2.37 WHIP. If that doesn't tell you that something just isn't right, we don't know what will.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 5/19, 8:00 AM CT
Derek Lowe pitched on three days' rest because Brad Penny was out due to arm stiffness. Lowe gave up seven runs on 10 hits in five innings against the Angels.

Our View: Penny is scheduled to pitch tonight against the Reds and Bronson Arroyo.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 5/17, 3:32 PM CT
Brad Penny has been scratched from his next start due to arm stiffness, according to the AP. Penny was scheduled to take the hill on Sunday in the finale of the "Freeway Series" against the Angels.

Our View: Derek Lowe will make the start on Sunday in his place on three days rest. The severity of Penny's ailment is yet to be determined.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 5/13, 10:11 PM CT
Brad Penny had another rough outing on Tuesday as he allowed nine hits and five runs to pick up his fourth loss. Penny has now allowed a whopping 19 hits in his last 10.2 innings.

Our View: Please tell us you didn't have Penny starting tonight. Penny has been getting by with some strong surface production the past few years despite some less than solid underlying numbers. He isn't this bad, but he also shouldn't be thought of as a guy who should have a 3.03 ERA either.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 5/7, 5:29 PM CT
Brad Penny had the worst start of his career on Wednesday as he allowed a career worst 10 runs in just 4.2 innings against the Mets. Penny allowed three walks and 10 hits, the third time this season in just eight starts that he has allowed 10 hits.

Our View: Penny's ERA went from 3.19 to 4.79 in this one outing. We have been warning you all year about Penny who was getting by despite terrible peripherals. Penny has 22 K and 17 BB leading to a 4.21 K/9 mark, and there are very few pitchers alive that can have long term success with numbers like that.
Brad Penny, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 4/26, 7:55 AM CT
Brad Penny will be on the hill against the Rockies tonight, according to MLB.com. Penny is 3-2 with a 2.67 ERA and a passable 1.42 WHIP.

Brad Penny, who posted a 6.25 ERA in the second half last year, admitted that a bulging disk in his back was the cause of his struggles. "I won 16 games last year, a career high," Penny told the LA Times, "but when I was struggling, people said I was overthrowing, trying to throw everything 100 miles an hour. The truth is, I was suffering from a bulging disk. I had trouble bending over, but it was easier for people to say I was overthrowing." So far this season, Penny holds a 2.33 ERA. It's still likely that we'll see him fade somewhat, but perhaps, now that he's healthy, he'll be able to avoid last season's collapse.

"It's a tough call because it's a great honor to make the All-Star game. I know he wants to pitch in that. But at the same time we want him to be smart and not do something that would delay him in the second half." Expect Penny and the Dodgers to make sure he's ready to go after the break, which could mean resting his finger on Tuesday.
