Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 11/3, 2:23 PM CT
The Associated Press reports Vernon Wells will undergo surgery next week to repair damaged cartilage in his left wrist. He is expected to be ready for spring training.

Our View: Can they work on his swing while they are in there? Wells, who will be entering the third year of a seven-year, $126-million contract in 2010, hit just .260 with 15 home runs and 66 RBI last season. His on-base percentage was an abysmal .311. It's going to be a long five years in Toronto for the Blue Jays and Wells.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 9/24, 9:31 PM CT
Vernon Wells led the way for the Jays in a losing effort on Thursday. Wells went 2-for-4 with a home run, a run scored, and all four of his team's RBI in their 5-4 loss to the Mariners.

Our View: Wells has largely been a disappointment this season, but he still has the ability to put together nights like this. His fantasy value has taken a huge hit, and he will have to prove he can still hit consistently before he returns to his previous fantasy value.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 9/11, 9:45 PM CT
Vernon Wells helped carry the Jays in tonight's 6-4 win at Detroit, as he went 2-for-3 with two RBI. He hit a single and a double.

Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 8/21, 9:38 PM CT
Vernon Wells homered, doubled and drove in two Friday night as the Jays topped the Angels 5-4.

Our View: Wells has taken a lot of heat this season for not performing up to the standards set by his monster contract. He's hitting just .257 with 13 homers, so hopefully you didn't overpay for him like Toronto did.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 8/19, 10:24 PM CT
Vernon Wells went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, and collected the Jays' lone RBI in tonight's 6-1 loss to Boston at the Rogers Centre.

Our View: Wells is riding a six-game hitting streak, and racked up 10 RBI over 15 games this month. Keep him active in fantasy leagues while hot.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 8/9, 3:05 PM CT
Embattled outfielder Vernon Wells had one of his better games of the season on Sunday, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI, as Roy Halladay and the Blue Jays beat Baltimore 7-3.

Our View: Wells now has 12 home runs on the season. For those of you keeping count at home, that's $1.5 million per home run.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 8/7, 9:36 PM CT

Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 7/21, 3:26 PM CT
Updating a previous report, Blue Jays' outfielder Vernon Wells will be in the team's lineup Tuesday night. Wells has missed the last three games with a stomach ailment.

Our View: Wells is feeling better, and he is hitting third in tonight's lineup. Anyone relying on Wells should get him back in the lineup, but if you have another option it would probably best to go with that.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 7/21, 10:25 AM CT
MLB.com is reporting that Blue Jays' outfielder Vernon Wells hopes to return to the lineup on Tuesday after missing the last three games due to the flu. Wells is hitting .263 on the season for Toronto.

Our View: With the day off yesterday, Wells should be good to go tonight against the Indians. With reigning Cy Young winner Cliff Lee on the mound, Wells figures to be a bad fantasy play, so you may want to keep him on the bench for one more night.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 7/18, 3:41 PM CT
Vernon Wells sat out his second straight game with the flu on Saturday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: If you are one of the poor souls who owns him, it would probably be best to keep him out of your lineup on Sunday if you have a reserve OF to start in his place.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 7/17, 4:47 PM CT
According to the Twitter page of Blue Jays' beat writer Jordan Bastian, outfielder Vernon Wells is not in the team's lineup for Friday night's game against the Red Sox due to a case of the stomach flu.

Our View: The flu can be tricky, so Wells should be considered questionable for the rest of the weekend. We will keep you updated on his status, so check back to see if he is able to play tomorrow.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 7/6, 3:57 PM CT
Vernon Wells had his first three hit game since June 18 on Monday, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored, as the Jays beat the Yankees 7-6 in New York.

Our View: Wells' 2009 has been a colossal failure to this point, but for what it's worth, he has hit in six of his last seven games, and could be due to hit even more. Still, he's become just another outfielder in fantasy terms, and is worth little more than riding for hot streaks (if he goes on any) at this point.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 7/3, 3:44 PM CT
Vernon Wells was moved down to sixth in the order on Friday, and it seemed to work as he went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, a run scored, and an RBI. He now has eight homers on the season.

Our View: Wells has been struggling mightily this season, but maybe the move in the order will spark him. His fantasy value is very iffy right now, so monitor his performance to determine whether or not he should be in your lineup. For now, it would be best if you had another option.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 7/1, 12:17 PM CT
According to the Toronto Star, Vernon Wells has been given the day off on Wednesday to "clear his head a bit".

Our View: Wells is just two for his last 16 and has been hampered by nagging hamstring woes since spring training. He's hitting just .248 on the season, more than 30 points below his career average. Let's just call this what it is: a slumping player getting benched because fo poor production.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 6/30, 11:55 AM CT
Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com says there is "virtually no chance" the Blue Jays could trade Vernon Wells and his gargantuan contract, which has $98 million remaining on it through 2014.

Our View: The Jays would love to jettison Wells and his unsightly deal, but especially with the current economic climate, it just isn't happening. Since signing his longterm contract before the 2007 season, he has just 43 home runs and is batting only .263.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 6/20, 10:17 PM CT
Vernon Wells has been hot over the past few games, and he continued it on Saturday in the Blue Jays' 5-3 extra innings loss to the Nationals. Wells went 1-for-5 with a home run, a run scored, and an RBI in the game.

Our View: Wells has been terrible for most of June, but he has turned it around a bit over the last few days. Fantasy owners shouldn't give up on him yet, as it looks like he may be on the verge of turning it around.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 6/18, 8:58 PM CT
Vernon Wells went 3-for-6 with a pair of RBI in Thursday's 8-7 win at Philadelphia. Wells hit a double and two singles.

Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 5/25, 3:49 PM CT
Vernon Wells went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Monday's 4-1 loss at Baltimore. Both of his knocks were singles.

Vernon Wells was 2-for-6 with two RBI on Monday, but the Jays lost to Cleveland 9-7 in 12 innings. Wells is hitting .288 on the year.

Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 5/2, 4:00 PM CT
Outfielder Vernon Wells went 2-for-5 with a double and a run on Saturday against the Orioles. he is up to 21 runs over 26 games.

Our View: Wells hasn't scored 100 runs since 2003, so it's a bit surprising to see him crossing the plate so much this season. Having Adam Lind behind him has helped tremendously.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 4/24, 10:53 PM CT
Vernon Wells had a huge night at the plate on Friday, going 3-for-5 with a double, triple, two runs, two RBI, and a stolen base in the Blue Jays' 14-0 thrashing of the White Sox.

Our View: Wells is having a nice start to 2009, as his average is up to .280. He is scoring runs, stealing bases, and driving runs in. Wells is returning to being a quality fantasy outfielder in all formats.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 4/12, 5:11 PM CT
Vernon Wells hit his first home run of the season in Toronto's 8-4 loss to Cleveland on Sunday. He finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Our View: Wells is hitting cleanup for the Jays and there should be plenty of RBI opportunities coming his way this season. However, he had just one in his first six games despite hitting .292. Look for better production in the power categories going forward.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 4/7, 10:47 AM CT
Skipper Cito Gaston indicated that Vernon Wells will not be given extra rest over the first month of the season, according to MLB.com. He was nursing a strained hamstring in spring training, but Gaston said, "Vernon is going to have to go out and just play hard. If he comes up hurt, there is nothing we can do about that. I think that is the only way he knows how to go about it. When you go out and try to guard yourself from getting hurt, most of the time you do get hurt."

Our View: Wells went 2-for-4 in Monday's season opener, and should remain in fantasy lineups as long as he stays healthy.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 4/1, 2:36 PM CT
Vernon Wells was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI as the Blue Jays prevailed over the Nationals 7-6 on Wednesday.

Our View: Wells looks like he will be ready to handle the everyday duties of centerfield by opening day. He has missed a few weeks this spring due to a hamstring injury, but that appears to be behind him. His injury-prone label has not fallen as far behind him.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 3/24, 4:22 PM CT
Outfielder Vernon Wells went 2-for-2 with a double, one run, one RBI, and a stolen base in Tuesday's spring loss to the Phillies.

Our View: Wells is still rounding into shape as he comes off a hamstring injury, and it's good to see him stretch a double and steal third base. We feel a little better about his fantasy status with each passing day.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 3/19, 10:38 PM CT
TSN reports that Vernon Wells (hamstring) is expected to DH on Firday. He played in an intrasquad game at the Blue Jays' minor league camp on Wednesday of this week.

Our View: Wells missed time last season with this same injury. Be sure to keep in mind the lingering possibilities related to hamstring injuries when considering Wells against another outfielder. He is a good player when healthy, but 500 at-bats should be considered a successful season for Wells in 2009.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 3/19, 10:33 AM CT
Vernon Wells, who is still recovering from a strained hamstring, played in an intrasquad game at minor-league camp Wednesday, according to the Toronto Star.

Vernon Wells suffered a strained hamstring Monday, according to MLB.com. GM J.P. Ricciardi said, "Right now, preliminarily, I would say he is going to miss four weeks."

Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 2/20, 2:38 PM CT
Vernon Wells will not be participating in the World Baseball Classic, according to the Associated Press. Insurance costs got in the way of him not playing, and skipper Cito Gaston was in favor him of him participating. Gaston said, "I was hoping he would go, too, because I know he really wanted to go. He expressed that to me last year, especially because he feels like it got him off to a great start. It is too bad he is not going. I could see where that would get him off to a good start."

Our View: If Wells can stay healthy, he could bounce back with a strong campaign with the Jays. As of now, he should be drafted as a top-35 fantasy outfielder.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 2/18, 2:45 PM CT
Vernon Wells was committed to getting into shape in the off-season and he is hoping the work pays off in 2009, according to the Associated Press. He said, "My body is in a better place than it ever has been. It will allow everything else to fall into place. I think that was a big issue early on. I did not want to lose weight because you think if you lose weight you lose power. But I have gotten stronger at the same time. So it is probably weight that I could afford to lose." He has already hit a few homers at the training complex in batting practice, without even trying that hard.

Our View: Wells battled injuries that spoiled his 2008 campaign, but he could bounce back with a strong season if he can stay healthy.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 12/20, 9:04 AM CT
The Jays are listening to trade proposals for star outfielder Vernon Wells but are not actually shopping him, according to Sports Illustrated.

Our View: Wells has six years and over $100 million left on his contract, and the Jays have financial constraints. Perhaps they are fielding offers to see if they can land a solid starting pitcher after losing AJ Burnett to the Yankees.

Vernon Wells was the only source of offense for Toronto, getting two of his team's three hits in a 3-0 loss to the Red Sox.

Our View: Wells has had a sleepy September, hitting .278 with just two home runs and six RBI. He's had a decent season for fantasy owners, but not quite what was expected of him, though injuries played a role in that.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 9/10, 12:28 PM CT
Blue Jays outfielder Vernon Wells faces off against the White Sox and pitcher Mark Buehrle, which is a great thing for Wells. Over his career, Wells has crushed Buehrle for a .517 average (15-for-29) and .724 slugging percentage.

Our View: Fantasy owners have been thrilled with Wells' production since the All-Star break, and that includes this month, where he has posted a basehit in 11 of his last 12 games. That trend should continue against Buehrle.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 9/9, 9:58 PM CT

Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 9/4, 9:38 PM CT
Vernon Wells had another two hits on Thursday night including his 16th home run of the year for the Jays.

Our View: Don't look now, but Wells is hitting .300 thanks to a stretch of 29 games hitting .330. His overall numbers will once again be disappointing because of his various injuries, but with a .300-16-66 line in just 340 AB, Wells has been one hell of a hitter when healthy.

Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 8/13, 10:09 PM CT
The Blue Jays and Tigers fought through mundane performances on offense tonight, but give Toronto credit for getting the win on the one swing of worth they found this evening. Designated hitter Vernon Wells pounded a grand-slam homer in the top of the third, proving to be the winning runs scored in the 4-3 victory. It was the only hit Wells got on the night, going 1-for-3 with a walk.

Our View: Wells is struggling to find his power stroke (and health) this season, but tonight shows he is still a force to fear. He is 5-for-15 thus far this month.

Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 8/7, 6:37 PM CT
Vernon Wells will start a rehab assignment on Friday in Triple-A, reports the Toronto Star. He could be activated for the Jays weekend series in Boston.

Our View: Wells was having a nice year, with a .287 batting average and 42 RBI. He wasn't supplying quite as much power as fantasy owners would want, hitting just nine home runs, but maybe that will come when he gets back.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 8/5, 10:44 AM CT

Vernon Wells took batting practice with his Jays teammates for the first time since going on the DL with a hamstring injury, but he also revealed he had a torn tendon, according to TSN.com. "It's a tendon you don't need, it's the tendon they use when they reconstruct your ACL (anterior cruciate ligament). I almost kind of wished it tore and gotten it over with and not have any nagging injuries," he said.

Our View: Wells is trying to rehab the leg without undergoing surgery, though the leg is likely to bother him all year if he does that. Either way, this news means a downgrade in Wells' fantasy value.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 7/10, 5:53 PM CT
The Toronto Blue Jays have placed outfielder Vernon Wells on the 15-day disabled list due to his strained left hamstring. The injury is expected to keep Wells out of action four to six weeks, according to the AP.

Our View: This is horrible news for Wells' owners, as not only will he miss four to six weeks, but hamstring issues tend to linger and this could effect his production throughout the rest of the season.

Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 6/8, 2:56 PM CT
The decision to activate Vernon Wells from the DL earlier than expected is already paying dividends. Wells had three hits, including a homer, in the Jays' 5-4 win over Baltimore Sunday. He has five hits in two games since coming back from a fractured wrist.

Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 6/6, 9:14 AM CT

Wells, who fractured his left wrist May 9, is close to returning and far ahead of of his original schedule. Last night he began a rehab assignment with class-A Dunedin, just four weeks since the injury. The initial report was that he would be lost for six to eight weeks. "He could be back the middle of next week if all goes well," manager John Gibbons said yesterday. "I didn't expect him to do anything for six weeks."

Our View: Wells could return as early as Fantasy Week 11. The more conservative approach for owners would be to reinsert him into the starting lineup for Week 12.

Supporting a story by the AP yesterday, it does in fact appear that Vernon Wells is well ahead of schedule in his recovery from a broken left wrist and that he could return to the Jays lineup by late next week, according to MLB.com. "He could be back in the middle of next week or the end of next week, probably," said manager John Gibbons, who then smiled. "If all goes Wells. ... I didn't expect him to start doing anything probably until six weeks. What's it been, four? He's drinking his milk."

Our View: Though he appears to be on track to beat the original estimate, broken bones in wrists and hands are notorious for sapping batters ability to drive the ball. So be careful when activating Wells as it could take him a long while before he can once again hit the ball out of the yard.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 6/4, 10:48 PM CT
Vernon Wells is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a broken left wrist, according to the AP. He is taking batting practice and could be back within 10 days, Gibbons said.

Our View: The return of Wells would be a huge lift for a Jays offense that has been barely good enough to keep the team within striking range of the Rays and the Red Sox.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 6/3, 10:37 PM CT
Vernon Wells took batting practice Tuesday and manager John Gibbons said the outfielder reported no problems, according to the AP. Wells is coming back from a broken wrist.

Our View: Wells could possibly be back by the end of the month if all goes well.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 5/24, 3:37 PM CT
Vernon Wells, who broke his left wrist making a diving catch in Cleveland on May 9, worked in the outfield with his teammates before Saturday's game against the Royals. The center fielder is expected to begin a rehab stint in Florida on Monday.

Our View: The estimated time of return for Wells is in late June or early July.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 5/24, 12:30 PM CT
Vernon Wells, out with an injured wrist, will begin his rehab on Monday, according to MLB.com. Wells caught balls during batting practice on Saturday, but even that was a challenge. "I'm not used to my hand getting tired from squeezing the glove a few times."

Our View: Wells hasn't even attempted to swing a bat yet, and there is still no timetable established for his return to the Jays, though a best guess would be that he is still a month away from returning to the big league club. Wrist injuries often kill a hitter's ability to hit for power, so even when he does return don't be surprised if he fails to hit the long ball.

The Blue Jays' season suffered a head-on collision Saturday afternoon when an MRI revealed that Vernon Wells had suffered a fractured left wrist, this according to the Toronto Sun.

Our View: Wells, the Jays' center fielder and top offensive weapon, has a team-high 24 RBI and his presence in a struggling offense will be missed. He will be out for 6-8 weeks. Not only does this take some chunk out of the meat of the Jays batting order, it will have a negative effect on the players that typically hit before and after him. The loss of Wells at this point in time is particularly lethal, as he has been one of the few players in the lineup to have been producing at the plate. Wells was riding an eight-game hitting streak, during which he went 12-for-29 for a .414 average.

It has been determined that Vernon Wells has a broken left wrist, and he has been placed on the 15-day DL, according to globeandmail.com. Infielder Joe Inglett has been called back up from Triple-A Syracuse to cover his spot on the roster.

Our View: He will be on the shelf for six to eight weeks. This is a tough loss as Wells was leading the offense-deprived Jays with five homers and 24 RBI.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 5/10, 3:09 PM CT
Vernon Wells will likely miss today's game against Cleveland due to his tight right hamstring and sprained left wrist, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The team did not state if Wells will miss any more games beyong today. Either Brad Wilkerson or Kevin Mench will get a crack at covering his spot in the outfield, namely against lefty hurler Aaron Laffey.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 5/9, 9:44 PM CT

Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 5/8, 10:27 PM CT
Vernon Wells hit his fifth home run of the season in the ninth inning to help force extra innings in a game the Jays ultimately lost to the Rays.

Our View: Wells is hitting .279 with 24 RBI on the year, but after a quick start he hasn't really been much of a factor. His shoulder appears sound, and given that fact we would think that his production should be on the upswing soon.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 5/5, 2:14 PM CT
Vernon Wells has a poor track record against Javier Vazquez, tonight's opposing hurler for Chicago, according to MLB.com. Wells is only 4-for-29 (.138) over his career against Vazquez.

Our View: Wells recently fell into a slump but bounced back as he is 6-for-11 (.545) over his last three games. Keep him in your lineup, despite a tough personal match-up against Vazquez.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 5/3, 3:10 PM CT
Toronto enjoyed a strong outing from CF Vernon Wells in their 5-2 win over the Chicago White Sox today. Wells went 3-for-5 at the plate, all singles, to collect three RBIs.

Our View: Wells has been in the midst of a minor slump, going just 3-for-26 coming into today.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 4/22, 9:06 PM CT
Vernon Wells socked a solo homer in Tuesday's loss to the Rays. It was his only hit in four at-bats.

Our View: Wells had gone 12 games without a homer, so it was nice to see him get on the board again. He remains off to a solid start following his down year in 2007.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 4/21, 10:48 AM CT
Vernon Wells is not listed in Monday's lineup for the tilt against the Tigers. He is presumably just getting a day off. Alex Rios moved over to center field, and Joe Inglett is starting in right.

Our View: We'll update Wells' info if we find that he is ill or nursing an injury. Vernon has played in all 19 games thus far, and Monday's start is early.

Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 2/22, 3:23 PM CT
Vernon Wells took some batting practice thrown by Roy Halladay on Thursday to test out his surgically repaired shoulder, according to MLB.com. "I've taken a lot of swings and I'm just putting it through as many tests as possible," said Wells. "I'm swinging and missing. Obviously, I'm doing that on purpose just to see how it feels." Hopefully his shoulder won't slow him down once the season begins, so he can start swinging, hitting and improving the .245 batting average from last season.

The injury is not considered a long-term problem and Wells is expected to be healthy for spring training.

Vernon Wells was held out of the starting lineup Thursday, though he played the final inning in the outfield. "He's struggling right now," manager John Gibbons told the AP. "We'll give him a bit of a mental break." Wells, who will undergo surgery at the end of the season to remove a cyst from his left shoulder, is batting .149 (7-for-47) in September.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 9/12, 11:06 AM CT
Vernon Wells will undergo surgery on his left shoulder once the season is over, according to the Toronto Sun. "The doctors say it's a fairly simple procedure," he said. "Obviously shoulders are difficult and we have to be careful. I kind of hurt it last year and as I've continued to play, it's just gotten a bit worse. There's pain, discomfort at different times. You feel it and try to change things a bit so it doesn't hurt as much. It's been more frustrating than anything." Wells has been a disappointment this season, hitting just .249 with 16 homers and 79 RBI, and it's likely that this shoulder injury has affected his production at least somewhat. It'll be interesting to see how he's valued in drafts next season.
Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 8/31, 10:45 PM CT
Vernon Wells will undergo an MRI exam following the season to determine whether he needs surgery on his sore left shoulder, according to the AP. Wells has been bothered by tightness for most of the season.

Vernon Wells, CF, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 8/30, 12:02 PM CT
Vernon Wells has spent the entire season battling shoulder issues that began last year, general manager J.P. Ricciardi told MLB.com. "It's not so much an injury – there's just a little tightness in there," Ricciardi said. Whatever he wants to call the ailment, it appears Wells’ shoulder is the culprit for his disappointing season. Hopefully the problem will be fixed in the offseason and Wells is a bounce back player in 2008.

Vernon Wells has been productive since moving to the first spot in the lineup seven games ago, scoring five runs and driving in nine. "I've just been trying to work out the kinks, and it's all seemed to work out so far in the leadoff spot."
