Bernie Williams, OF, New York YankeesThursday 2/19, 4:38 PM CT
Bernie Williams worked out at the Yankees' spring training facility on Thursday to prepare to play for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Williams is 40-years old and has not ruled out a comeback to the major leagues. He has not played in the big leagues since 2006.

Bernie Williams reportedly sustained a serious quadriceps injury while playing in Puerto Rico with Carolina, according to the New York Journal News.

Our View: It is uncertain if the 40-year-old's attempt at a comeback is finished. He had intentions of representing Puerto Rico in the WBC.

Bernie Williams has started playing in Puerto Rico with Carolina, according to SlidingIntoHome.com. Williams is 1-7 so far with a single and two strikeouts.

Our View: He wants to represent Puerto Rico in the WBC, with a further goal of returning to the majors.

Bernie Williams is expected to play winter-ball in his home country of Puerto Rico, according to the Associated Press. Carolina Giants' GM Enrique Cruz said, "With a ballplayer like him, even though he hasn’t been playing for two years, you can’t say no."

Our View: The 40-year-old outfielder would like to return to the majors, and would also like to represent Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic next year. Williams was notably a five-time All-Star with the Yankees, but it remains to be seen if he has anything left in the tank.

Former Yankees' fan favorite Bernie Williams may attempt a comeback at age 40, according to the NY Post. He said, "I'm looking to keeping my options open, keep working out. It's been a great two years. I've had the opportunity to do things that I never really had the opportunity to do when I was playing. I had the chance to travel. Take my kids to school, watch my kid graduate from high school, a lot of things that I never would have never had the opportunity to do if I had been playing the game."

Our View: He hasn't played since 2006, but never officially retired. He won't likely be able to handle a role as an outfielder, and not many clubs would be willing to give him a job as a DH. His best bet seems to be as a pinch hitter.

Bernie Williams officially declined the Yankees' non-roster invitation to spring training on Tuesday, according to Newsday. "There wasn't any information that led him to believe he would be a member of the team," Williams' agent, Scott Boras, told The Associated Press. "He's continuing to work out, will wait to see if their position changes." If a job never opens up, Williams figures to retire.

Bernie Williams doesn't plan to accept the Yankees' offer to attend spring training on a minor league contract, according to the AP. "I think if they wanted me, they would have signed me already," Williams said. "The option to go to spring training and see what happened -- I don't think at this moment it is something I want to consider." It's unlikely that Williams will sign on with another team, so it looks like his big league career may be over.

Bernie Williams is leaning toward accepting the Yankees' minor-league offer rather than retire, according to Newsday. Williams is considered a longshot to make the team, but he apparently would rather be cut and retire a Yankee than try and latch on with another franchise.

SI.com reports that the Yankees have a standing offer to Bernie Williams to come to spring training as a non-roster invite. It appears that Williams will either accept the offer or retire.

There is nothing new to report on the status of free agent Bernie Williams, according to Newsday. The Yankees outfield is pretty much set unless they decide to deal Melky Cabrera, which is looking less and less likely. They could offer Williams a minor-league deal, but he may see that as an insult after his long tenure with the team. It may turn out that his only option is to sign with another team, which could lead him to retirement.

Although Bernie Williams isn't sure if he's going to keep playing for 2007 and beyond, he was one of 21 players who filed for free agency Tuesday, the AP reports. Williams, 38, hit .281 with 12 homers and 61 RBI in 420 at-bats with the Yankees last year.
