Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 3/15, 10:04 PM CT
The Marlins were among the teams watching Mike Lowell's Grapefruit League debut Monday, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View: The Marlins have Lowell on their radar, but the level of their interest is uncertain as of now. He would provide nice veteran depth at the Marlins' corner infield spots if he proves to be healthy.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxThursday 3/11, 9:09 AM CT
The Providence Journal reports that Mike Lowell (thumb) will make his spring training game debut this Monday. He had been scheduled to do so on Friday.

Our View: Barring another setback, his showcasing can begin. Obviously, until he is dealt out of Boston, he is only viable in AL-only leagues.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSunday 2/28, 9:54 AM CT
According to the Boston Globe, the Red Sox are apparently serious about keeping Mike Lowell's bat around this season.

Our View: Sounds like they've changed their tune about the aging, oft-injured third baseman. But if they do decide to try and move him again, the Twins are still apparently very interested. They looked into Lowell earlier in the offseason, but the Sox would have to eat most of the $12 million he's owed this year.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 2/24, 6:26 PM CT
Mike Lowell participated in throwing and defensive drills on the field Wednesday, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Lowell also hit off a tee, and will soon advance to normal batting practice. The veteran corner infielder knows that he will have to settle for a reserve role with Boston, and will try to raise his trade stock with a strong showing in spring training.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 2/16, 11:05 PM CT
Mike Lowell will be used in a bench role by the Red Sox this season, according to The Sporting News.

Our View: This was to be expected after the club reeled in Adrian Beltre to cover third base. So it appears that Lowell won't be worth holding outside of AL-only leagues unless he gets traded.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 2/16, 8:27 AM CT
The Red Sox are still very much trying to trade third baseman Mike Lowell, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: The team is hoping he looks healthy this spring, and thus becomes more attractive to potential suitors. Expect a deal to get done in the next few weeks.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSunday 1/24, 9:09 AM CT
Mike Lowell will most likely be traded before the end of spring training, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Talks between the Rangers and Red Sox regarding Lowell famously fell apart earlier this offseason over concerns about the third baseman's thumb. Another logical landing place, Florida, has also said they are not interested in their former player. As long as Boston picks up almost all of his tab, however, it's still a good bet he will be elsewhere by opening day.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxThursday 1/21, 9:26 AM CT
Some rumors this offseason have Mike Lowell getting traded back to the Marlins, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View: Marlins president David Samson called such a move unlikely on Wednesday, however. Boston's intentions regarding Lowell have remained murky since his potential trade to Texas fell apart, and it's very likely he will simply end up staying in Beantown in 2010.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 1/5, 9:25 AM CT
Even with the imminent signing of Adrian Beltre, Mike Lowell could remain in Boston in 2010, according to WEEI.

Our View: For now, Lowell is behind Casey Kotchman at first base on the team's depth chart. With that being an undesirable situation for all concerned parties, however, expect trade talks for the corner infielder to resume at some point this offseason.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 12/30, 6:25 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Mike Lowell underwent successful surgery on his thumb, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: The veteran third baseman had a 95-percent tear in the radial collateral ligament in his thumb when Dr. Donald Sheridan performed the operation. Lowell will need 6-8 weeks of recovery time, which will put him on target to participate in spring training, barring a setback. The Sox could try to trade him again as well.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 12/30, 9:26 AM CT
Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that third baseman Mike Lowell will undergo thumb surgery on Wednesday.

Our View: This procedure is the reason he is currently not shopping for a house in Dallas. With a reported maximum recovery time of two months, expect trade talks for the veteran corner infielder to heat up again some time in January.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSunday 12/20, 6:46 PM CT
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com believes that Mike Lowell will never play another game for the Boston Red Sox.

Our View: The deal that had Lowell going to Texas fell through because he failed his physical, and now he's going to require surgery. The Red Sox still desperately want to move him, and it's pretty obvious they are ready to proceed without him after acquiring Victor Martinez and Casey Kotchman. They are also willing to eat $9 million of his $12 million salary in any deal, so if he can recover in time for the season expect him to garner some interest in the trade market.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSaturday 12/19, 8:13 PM CT
Mike Lowell has a torn ligament in his right thumb, hence canceling his trade to Texas, according to baseball writer Pete Abraham's twitter page.

Our View: Lowell will require surgery. Top catching prospect Max Ramirez will be staying in Texas now as well.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 12/18, 3:17 PM CT
Mike Lowell is expected to take a physical exam for the Rangers some time this weekend, according to ESPN.com.

Our View: The Rangers are very interested in Lowell and appear to be willing to part with catcher prospect Max Ramirez for him, but first want to make sure Lowell's thumb is in decent condition and doesn't need surgery. If Lowell appears healthy enough, a deal could be agreed upon shortly after the physical.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 12/18, 9:12 AM CT
A potential deal that would send Mike Lowell to Texas in exchange for catcher Max Ramirez has been halted for now due to the Rangers' concern over Lowell's right thumb, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: The Rangers believe Lowell's thumb could potentially need surgery to be repaired, which would clearly make him far less attractive. As of now, this once nearly-official deal looks to have about a 50-50 chance of getting done.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxThursday 12/17, 8:10 PM CT
The Mike Lowell to Texas trade should be resolved "one way or the other" by the weekend, according to Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports.

Our View: You probably didn't know it hadn't been. It now sounds like there is a very real chance it will not happen, so stay tuned.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxThursday 12/17, 8:05 PM CT
If the Mike Lowell trade falls through, the Rangers have many other potential targets, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: Vladimir Guerrero, Jim Thome and Jermaine Dye are "at the top" of the team's list. Dye and Vlad actually seem like better options than Lowell (provided Texas isn't big on defense), so don't consider Lowell a slam-dunk at this point.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 12/14, 8:05 AM CT
Mike Lowell may require surgery on his achy right thumb, according to MLB Network's Peter Gammons.

Our View: His thumb is becoming a real issue in Boston's attempted trade of him to Texas. The whole ordeal should come to a head in the next day or two.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSunday 12/13, 11:21 PM CT
Mike Lowell's balky right thumb appears to be holding up his possible trade to the Rangers, according to ESPN.

Our View: His equally achy right hip has checked out, but the thumb has given the Rangers reason to pause. The commissioner's office has also been slow to approve the deal, since it would feature Boston paying $9 million of Lowell's $12 million 2010 salary. What once seemed like a sure thing might not actually happen .
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxThursday 12/10, 8:18 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, the Red Sox have agreed to send Mike Lowell to the Rangers in exchange for catcher Max Ramirez, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Lowell will earn $12MM in 2010, and the Sox will eat part of that figure. The deal is pending medical clearance.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxThursday 12/10, 8:51 AM CT
Mike Lowell's chances of getting traded to the Rangers are "better than 50-50," according to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated.

Our View: The Red Sox would reportedly pay $9 million of his $12 million 2010 salary. The move would make Boston eligible to sign free agent third baseman Adrian Beltre, whom they are rumored to covet.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 12/8, 9:35 PM CT
The Rangers have considered Mike Lowell, according to FOX Sports.

Our View: Lowell would fit their need for a right-handed hitter who could serve at first base and at DH, but he is not as attractive as other options - namely after he underwent hip surgery last year.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 12/4, 10:05 PM CT
Skipper Terry Francona does not want Mike Lowell to serve time at first base, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View: Francona is not confident the long-time third baseman could make an easy transition to first. Lowell noted that he is open to playing at first in a bid to hold a spot with Boston in 2010.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxThursday 12/3, 10:34 AM CT
Mike Lowell would be open to playing first base in 2010 if the Red Sox asked him to, according to WEEI.

Our View: As of yet, they have not asked him to. It's likely a desperate attempt on Lowell's behalf to work himself back into Boston's 2010 plans, something he does not appear to be a part of at this point.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 11/24, 11:33 AM CT
Although they are in the market for a competent bat that can play both first and third base, Colorado is not interested in Boston's Mike Lowell, who is available, according to Fox Sports.

Our View: They can't afford his $12 million salary, even if Boston offers to eat a large portion of it. Retaining Jason Giambi remains an option, though he is famously un-nimble in the field.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSunday 11/22, 10:44 PM CT
FoxSports.com is reporting that the Red Sox are actively shopping third baseman Mike Lowell. The Sox are said to be willing to pay half of his remaining $12 million salary for next season.

Our View: The Sox must be realizing that there won't be much interested in the aged corner infielder, because they are willing to pay $6 million for another team to take him. He isn't likely to receive any interest from NL teams, so the Sox could have plenty of trouble finding a taker.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSunday 10/4, 12:23 PM CT
Mike Lowell was scratched from the Red Sox's lineup on Sunday with a sore right thumb. Lowell could have played, but the team decided another day of rest would be more beneficial.

Our View: Lowell was in the lineup originally, but manager Terry Francona talked him out of the lineup. The team wants Lowell to be healthy for the postseason, so it was a good move to keep him out today.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSaturday 10/3, 7:41 PM CT
The Boston Herald reports that Mike Lowell was scratched from Saturday's game against the Indians due to a sore right thumb.

Our View: It's unknown how Lowell suffered the injury, but it was sever enough to keep him out of the lineup. Kevin Youkilis will slide over to the hot corner and Casey Kotchman enters the game to play first base.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 9/28, 4:21 PM CT
Mike Lowell received an injection in his ailing hip today, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: The plan is for Lowell to rest for a few days, with the intention of taking some at-bats before the start of the playoffs. He missed the ALCS last season and underwent offseason surgery on his right hip.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 9/22, 4:38 PM CT
Mike Lowell is out of the lineup for tonight's game at Kansas City, according to Amalie Benjamin's (Boston Globe) twitter page.

Our View: Lowell will ride the pine, with Kevin Youkilis slated to cover the hot corner and Victor Martinez at first base.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSaturday 9/12, 4:14 PM CT
Mike Lowell is not in the Red Sox starting lineup against the Rays on Saturday night, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Jason Varitek is catching, shifting Victor Martinez to first and Kevin Youkilis to third.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 9/2, 1:46 PM CT
Mike Lowell is out of the Red Sox starting lineup on Wednesday, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Kevin Youkilis will shift to third, while Victor Martinez will play first so Jason Varitek can catch Josh Beckett.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSunday 8/30, 9:33 AM CT
Mike Lowell is not in the Red Sox's lineup on Sunday. Kevin Youkilis will play third, whle Victor Martinez moves to first base.

Our View: Lowell getting the day game rest today, and the platoon cotinues. Get him out today, but be prepared to put him back in tomorrow.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 8/26, 3:34 PM CT
Mike Lowell is out of the Red Sox's lineup again on Wednesday. Casey Kotchman is playing first base, and Kevin Youkilis will shift to third.

Our View: Lowell just getting a day off to keep him fresh, as he has been hitting well as of late. This platoon situation is working well for Lowell, as the rest really seems to be paying off for him.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSaturday 8/22, 12:30 PM CT
Mike Lowell is out of the Red Sox lineup on Saturday, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: There is no apparent injury. Kevin Youkilis will shift to third, Victor Martinez will play first and Jason Varitek will catch.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 8/21, 10:46 PM CT
Mike Lowell went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer in the Red Sox embarrassing 20-11 loss to the Yankees on Friday.

Our View: Lowell has a hard time staying healthy, but when he plays, he produces. He's hitting .301 with 15 homers and 62 RBI in limited time. He's also hitting .340 in August.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 8/11, 4:19 PM CT
Mike Lowell is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against Detroit, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Victor Martinez will start at first base with Kevin Youkilis at third and Jason Varitek behind the plate. Adjust your lineups accordingly.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 8/10, 3:54 PM CT
Mike Lowell will not start on Monday for the Red Sox in their game against the Tigers. Casey Kotchman will play first base and Kevin Youkilis will move to third.

Our View: Lowell is starting to see his playing time decrease, and things don't figure to get much better for him barring an injury to another player. Youk and Victor Martinez will be in the lineup nearly every day, which means the players alternating playing time will be Lowell, Varitek, and Kotchman.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 8/7, 3:16 PM CT
Mike Lowell is not in the Red Sox lineup for the Friday night clash with the hated Yankees. Kevin Youkilis is at third base tonight while Victor Martinez takes over at first.

Our View: Lowell looks to be the one who will be spending more time on the bench after the team's acquisitions, and he may be better off playing just a few times a week to keep his health in tact. He is not a great fantasy option at this point, as it remains unclear how much he will play down the stretch.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSunday 8/2, 4:49 PM CT
Mike Lowell went 3-for-5 with three RBI in a slugfest that produced 28 runs on Sunday. The Red Sox topped the Orioles 18-10.

Our View: Lowell brings a litany of injury concerns, but when he plays he's productive. He's now hitting an even .300 and has driven in 53 despite missing time due to various ailments. He may lose some playing time with the addition of Victor Martinez, but is still a productive fantasy player. He just needs to be monitored closely.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 7/29, 9:58 PM CT
Mike Lowell went 2-for-3 with five RBI in tonight's 8-6 loss to Oakland at Fenway Park. He hit a single and a three-run homer off Brett Anderson.

Our View: Lowell extended his hitting streak to eight games, and is batting .444 this month (28 at-bats). He is hitting well while fighting for playing time following the addition of Adam LaRoche.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 7/27, 2:57 PM CT
Mike Lowell is not in the Red Sox' lineup for the second straight day, according to the Twitter page of Boston beat writer Amalie Benjamin. Adam LaRoche is starting at first, and Kevin Youkilis is at third.

Our View: Lowell figures to see more time on the bench now that the team has acquired LaRoche, so this isn't a big surprise. Fantasy owners may want to find a more consistent option at third, because Lowell's playing time will be unpredictable for the rest of the season.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSaturday 7/18, 11:56 AM CT
Recently activated Mike Lowell will start again on Saturday, but will sit on Sunday, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View: Lowell went 2-for-4 in his return from the DL yesterday, and should be in your starting lineup every day even though he will receive periodic days off to rest.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 7/17, 3:50 PM CT
According to MLBlogs.com, the Red Sox have activated third baseman Mike Lowell from the 15-day disabled list.

Our View: Lowell is in the lineup tonight and hitting sixth. Be sure to get him activated and put in your starting lineup.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 7/15, 12:27 PM CT
According to WEEI.com, the Red Sox plan on activating injured third baseman Mike Lowell this weekend. The move will most likely be made on Friday or Saturday.

Our View: Lowell was originally slated to return on Friday, but the Sox may give him an extra day to heal up. Aaron Bates is the likely candidate to be sent down when Lowell does arrive. He should be fine to get into fantasy lineups this weekend, but beware of the third baseman's ever-changing status. The Red Sox aren't convinced he can remain healthy and have been eying Scott Rolen in a possible deadline deal. If that comes to fruition, Lowell will lose considerable value.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSaturday 7/11, 7:49 AM CT
Mike Lowell took batting practice on Friday for the first time since going on the disabled list on June 28, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View: Lowell has been battling a right hip strain. He has put up good numbers in 2008, and would be worth an add when he returns if his previous owner dropped him when he went on the DL.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 7/3, 6:43 PM CT
According to WEEI.com, Mike Lowell's ailing hip is improving after having fluid drained from it and after receiving an injection of lubricant.

Our View: Lowell will suspend all baseball-related activities until Monday and then begin rehabbing the hip aggressively. He is expected to be ready to return from the DL when first eligible (after the All Star break).
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 6/30, 2:22 PM CT
Red Sox' beat writer Amalie Benjamin is reporting on her Twitter page that the Red Sox have placed third baseman Mike Lowell on the 15-day DL. He will be replaced by Jeff Bailey on the roster.

Our View: The Red Sox brought Bailey along with them to Baltimore earlier today, which signified the coming move. Lowell shouldn't need more than the 15 days, but check back when it gets closer to that time.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 6/29, 4:28 PM CT
Mike Lowell had fluid drained from his surgically repaired hip today, and also received an injection to relieve the inflammation, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: The Sox will wait a few days to see if the treatment helped relieve the problem, or if he needs to spend time on the DL. Skipper Terry Francona hinted that Lowell will not be ready to go when the Sox battle the Orioles Wednesday, and he should be held out of fantasy lineups until further notice.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSunday 6/28, 1:10 PM CT
According to MLB.com, injured third baseman Mike Lowell received a shot in his ailing hip and likely won't see any action until Wednesday at the earliest.

Our View: The shot Lowell receives is not a cure-all and reacts differently for everyone, but the team is hoping it has positive effects. Keep Lowell on your bench for the time being and hope that he doesn't land on the DL.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSunday 6/28, 12:19 PM CT
Once again Mike Lowell is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Braves, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: Lowell is still banged up and it looks like the Sox are fine keeping him on the bench during the NL series. When inter-league play ends he'll likely get back in the lineup. Kevin Youkilis will start at third base.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 6/26, 3:14 PM CT
Mike Lowell is not in the Red Sox' lineup again on Friday, according to the Twitter page of Boston Globe writer Amalie Benjamin. David Ortiz will once again be at first while Kevin Youkilis shifts to third.

Our View: Lowell is still suffering from nagging soreness, and it is not the worst thing in the world for him to get some time off during this NL trip. He will be back when the team returns to AL play, but until then he is a pretty iffy.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 6/24, 2:13 PM CT
According to the Boston Globe, Mike Lowell is not in the starting lineup again on Wednesday.

Our View: David Ortiz is playing first base and Kevin Youkilis slides over to the hot corner. Lowell has been bothered fatigue and nagging injuries, so with the Sox playing in the National League and Jon Lester having to hit for himself, Lowell was the obvious odd man out. Adjust your lineups accordingly.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 6/23, 2:33 PM CT
The Boston Globe is reporting that Red Sox' third baseman Mike Lowell is back in the lineup for Tuesday night's game against the Nationals. Lowell missed the last two games with general body fatigue.

Our View: Lowell was just getting some rest over the weekend, so he should be even more ready to go than usual tonight. Feel free to get him back in the lineup, but don't be shocked if he sits again this week with Youkilis moving to third and Ortiz playing at first.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSunday 6/21, 12:41 PM CT
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, third baseman Mike Lowell is out of the starting lineup for the second day in a row on Sunday.

Our View: Lowell is getting another day of rest as he's apparently suffering from fatigue. He should be fine next week after some significant rest.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSaturday 6/20, 3:17 PM CT
According to the Boston Globe, Mike Lowell is not in Saturday's lineup against the Braves.

Our View: Nothing to worry about here. Lowell is just getting a routine night off. Kevin Youkilis will man the hot corner and Mark Kotsay gets the start at first base. Expect to see Lowell in the lineup tomorrow.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 6/12, 3:23 PM CT
According to the Boston Globe, Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell is not in the lineup for Friday night's game against the Phillies. He will be replaced by Kevin Youkilis at third, while David Ortiz plays first.

Our View: Just a night off for Lowell, mainly because the Sox want to keep Papi in the lineup now that he is hitting. Expect Lowell back tomorrow, but if you have another option at third you will want to get Lowell out tonight.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 5/26, 8:31 AM CT
Mike Lowell is expected to sit out tonight's game at Minnesota, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Lowell is not injured and he went 4-for-5 on Monday, and skipper Terry Francona just wants to give him a day of rest as he has played in nearly every game this season. The Metrodome turf is an issue as well as he is coming off hip surgery.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 5/25, 4:56 PM CT
Mike Lowell went 4-for-5 with four singles and an RBI in Monday's 6-5 win over the Twins. He served as the DH in today's game.

Our View: Lowell has seven hits in his last 10 at bats and his average is back up to .305. After an incredible April, Lowell has cooled off, but he is showing signs of heating back up. He should probably get re-inserted back into fantasy lineups.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSunday 5/24, 6:32 PM CT
Mike Lowell was 3-for-5 with a three-run homer in Boston's 12-5 crushing of the Mets on Sunday.

Our View: Lowell is once again quietly having a solid season. Perennially underrated, he's hitting .291 with eight homers and 32 RBI and remains a solid fantasy option at third base.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSaturday 5/9, 7:02 PM CT
Mike Lowell was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in a losing effort on Saturday. His Red Sox got hammered by the Rays 14-5.

Our View: Lowell is quietly having another solid season. He's now hitting .314 with 11 doubles, six homers and 28 RBI and is a solid fantasy third baseman in any format.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSaturday 5/2, 9:45 PM CT
Mike Lowell went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in Saturday's 10-6 win at the Rays. His other hit was a single.

Our View: Lowell ended a six-game skid without a homer. He raised his season average to .312 and has 24 RBI over 23 games.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 4/29, 10:13 PM CT
Mike Lowell went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored as the Red Sox defeated the Indians 6-5 on Wednesday.

Our View: Lowell is off to a strong start as he already has 23 RBI through 20 games. He will certainly cool off at some point, but he could be in line for a season like he had in 2007 when he recorded 120 RBI.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 4/27, 3:36 PM CT
Mike Lowell has been named the AL Player of the Week, according to the Sports Network. Lowell earned the weekly honor by batting .435 with two home runs, four doubles and an AL-best 11 RBI.

Our View: Teammates David Ortiz and Jacoby Ellsbury were also considered for the award, which helped lead Boston to an MLB-best 10-game winning streak.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSaturday 4/25, 7:38 PM CT
Mike Lowell was 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, six RBI, a run scored and two strike outs as the Red Sox beat the Yankees 16-11 on Saturday.

Our View: Following today's performance, Lowell is off to an absurdly hot start to the season. Through 16 games he has 22 RBI. The third baseman saw his value fall in the offseason following hip surgery, but it appears that he has recovered just fine and he's swinging the bat as well as ever.

Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 4/22, 4:20 PM CT
Mike Lowell had a huge day at the plate on Wednesday, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in the Red Sox 10-1 win over the Twins. He raised his average to .315 for the season.

Our View: Lowell has been a bit of a surprise so far this season, as he was a kind of unknown quantity coming off of hip surgery. He is hitting the ball well and should be owned or considered in all formats.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 4/17, 10:41 AM CT
Mike Lowell revealed to the Boston Globe that the long plane rides are causing him great discomfort with his hip.

Our View: Lowell is still trying to get back to 100 percent, but it will be difficult to do so at age 35. He has two homers on the young season already, and once he figures out how to manage his soreness he should be an effective hitter.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 4/15, 5:14 PM CT
Mike Lowell had a big day at the dish on Wednesday, going 2-for-3 with a homer, two runs, and two RBI.

Our View: Lowell is still only hitting .229 for the year, but he has shown some encouraging signs coming back from hip surgery. He is not much of a fantasy threat in mixed leagues at the moment, but as he gets stronger throughout the year he may turn into a decent starting third baseman.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 4/3, 9:05 AM CT
Mike Lowell is optimistic regarding his surgically repaired right hip, according to the Boston Globe. He said, "I am hoping to get better each day. There are times I still go out and think about it. I know there were question marks from their end and my end. Once games started, I think everything has gone pretty smooth. I believed in the process, but you still got to do it. Just because someone says you are going to be fine does not mean it is a guarantee. I was optimistic that it would work out. I am just glad it did."

Our View: Lowell will remain an injury risk, and should only be considered as a flier (and not a starter) for mixed leagues.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 3/23, 3:34 PM CT
Mike Lowell went 1-for-3 with a solo homer in Monday's 7-6 win over the Tigers.

Our View: Lowell is hitting .368 with three homers in the Grapefruit League. He is still an injury risk, but is worth drafting as a flier for mixed leagues.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSunday 3/22, 4:34 PM CT
Mike Lowell hit his second home run of the spring on Sunday as the Red Sox defeated the Phillies 3-0. It was his only hit in three at-bats as he hit fourth and started at third base.

Our View: The Red Sox have played Lowell sparingly this spring as he is returning from offseason hip surgery. He has hit well over his 16 at-bats and figures to be the opening day third baseman. His fantasy stock is falling due to the injury concern, but he should still provide solid value at the hot-corner. Just be sure that you get some reliable insurance if you select him.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 3/9, 11:37 AM CT
Third baseman Mike Lowell will make his spring debut on Tuesday, the Providence Journal confirms. He will serve as the DH and receive two at-bats. Lowell is coming off of surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip.

Our View: It's tough to get too excited until we see Lowell in the field. Come the regular season, we don't envision him finding time at DH. David Ortiz tends to hog that lineup spot.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSaturday 3/7, 9:59 AM CT
The Boston Herald reports that Mike Lowell ran the bases on Friday and he should make his spring training debut on Tuesday. He will likely DH for the Red Sox.

Our View: Lowell is recovering from hip surgery, but he should still be ready for opening day. He only played in 113 games last season. Keep an eye on his spring training, and especially take note if he suffers many setbacks.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxThursday 3/5, 10:42 AM CT
Manager Terry Francona said Thursday there's a good chance third baseman Mike Lowell will be ready for game action within the next seven days, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: Lowell underwent hip surgery last November and hopes to be ready by Opening Day. Once medically cleared, he will test the hip by serving as Boston's DH in Grapefruit League games.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSaturday 2/28, 8:50 AM CT
Mike Lowell, who is recovering from hip surgery, discussed his timetable regarding his return to game action, according to the Boston Globe. The third baseman said, "The key is try to get to that point where I am running closer to 90, 95 percent. Hopefully, that is in the next week or so. I have been recovering a lot better the past week."

Our View: Skipper Terry Francona noted that Lowell was running at around 80 percent on Thursday. The 35-year-old vet will remain a risky fantasy option for 2009.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 2/17, 6:26 PM CT
Mike Lowell said he felt hurt by the Red Sox attempts to sign Mark Teixeira, according to the Associated Press. "I don't think you can be anything but hurt," Lowell said Tuesday.

Our View: If Teixeira signed with the Red Sox, Kevin Youkilis would have been moved to third, leaving Lowell out. Lowell had a solid year last year, before being injured in the last few weeks of the season. He should be ready for the start of the 2009 season.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxThursday 2/12, 4:27 PM CT
The Red Sox feel that Mike Lowell will be ready for baseball activity when he arrives at spring training but he will take it slow, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: Lowell is trying to get back after hip surgery and should be ready for the regular season. The question is how effective he will be this season.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 1/28, 12:14 PM CT
Mike Lowell will not represent Puerto Rico in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Lowell is recovering from hip surgery, and may not have been ready in time for the March tournament if he decided to continue to pursue it. His recovery has been going well though, and the club is hopeful of a strong comeback from the veteran third baseman in 2009.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 1/9, 7:54 AM CT
Mike Lowell's rehab from hip surgery continues to go well, according to the Boston Globe. GM Theo Epstein said, "The doctors are optimistic. There have been ups and downs all the way, as there are with any rehab. But it's been generally very, very positive with his range of motion, the benchmarks with his rehab. He's still on schedule."

Our View: He is expected to be at spring training, but Epstein noted that the club is going to be smart and won't rush him back to the diamond. Esptein did not comment on if Lowell's relationship with the team changed after they pursued Mark Teixeira.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 12/10, 12:21 PM CT
The Giants have garnered interest in Boston third baseman Mike Lowell, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

Our View: The Giants interest in Jorge Cantu has reportedly declined as a result. This is interesting news, but could be pure speculation.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 12/9, 10:51 AM CT
The Boston Herald reports that Red Sox manager Terry Francona said he got a positive update on third baseman Mike Lowell, who underwent hip surgery in October. “He had a sparkling report, which was really nice to hear,” the manager said. “I think the timetable is that he’ll probably be hitting by the middle of January. I think everybody, from the medical people on down, think that when the season starts, he’ll be ready to go."

Our View: The Red Sox are rumored to be big players for Mark Teixeira and if he lands in Boston, Lowell seems like the most likely player to be dealt out of a mix that includes David Ortiz and Kevin Youkilis.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSunday 11/30, 8:59 AM CT
If Mike Lowell (hip surgery) proves to be healthy in spring training, he could potentially be dealt by the Red Sox if they land Mark Teixeira, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: The team would move Kevin Youkilis to third base with Teixeira playing his natural position at first base. Lowell has solid power and defensive skills and could garner interest from the Indians, Dodgers, Angels, and Twins.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSaturday 11/15, 8:49 AM CT
Mike Lowell is making favorable progress in his recovery from hip surgery, according to the Boston Globe. Surgeon Brian Kelly, who performed Lowell's operation, said, "I think there's a good chance he'll be the same. The pro athletes that I've dealt with that have this type of surgery are typically able to get back to their full level of function without losing much. If there is some degree of permanent damage, is that damage going to become progressively worse? It probably has more to do with longevity of one's career. Will he come back like he was? That's what we all want to know. I'm optimistic."

Our View: Standard recovery time is 4-6 months, and Lowell is already off crutches. He has a shot to be ready for spring training.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxThursday 10/23, 8:43 AM CT
The Boston Red Sox are interested in signing free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira and would probably trade Mike Lowell to create room for him, according to the Boston Globe. Potential suitors for Lowell include the White Sox, Indians, Twins, Angels, Brewers, Reds, Dodgers, and Giants.

Our View: Trading Lowell would mean that Kevin Youkilis would go over to third base with Teixeira taking over at first base.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 10/22, 10:18 AM CT
Mike Lowell's injured right hip had much less damage than previously expected, according to the Boston Herald. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said that the surgery was a "complete success."

Our View: Lowell's body is acting older than 34 years old right now, but the successful surgery is definitely a good sign. The Red Sox struggled at times on offense with him out against the Rays in the ALCS. Lowell is signed through 2010, a deal that he signed after being named World Series MVP at the end of last season.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 10/20, 3:05 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Mike Lowell underwent surgery on his ailing right hip, according to the AP.

Our View: Red Sox spokesman John Blake said Lowell was awake after his surgery Monday. He noted that Lowell wanted to undergo the surgery now to have sufficient time to recover before spring training. The arthroscopic procedure repaired a tear in his hip and fixed a bone spur.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 10/20, 8:09 AM CT
Mike Lowell remains on schedule to undergo surgery on his hip today in New York, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Barring a setback, Lowell should be ready for opening day 2009.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 10/14, 4:27 PM CT
Mike Lowell will have surgery on his ailing hip on Monday, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Clearly, his season is over with but he should be ready to go before opening day. The Red Sox will continue to use Kevin Youkilis at third base and Mark Kotsay at first.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSunday 10/12, 7:46 AM CT
Mike Lowell is likely done for the remainder of the postseason due to his ailing hip, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Indications are that off-season surgery should get him back to his normal self in 2009.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 10/7, 9:31 AM CT
Even if the Red Sox advance to the World Series, they will likely be without third baseman Mike Lowell, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Lowell will need surgery in the offseason to fix his injured hip. He tried to make it through the ALDS, but was in far too much pain to continue.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 10/6, 7:04 PM CT
Mike Lowell has been removed from the ALDS roster due to complications with his injured hip, according to The Providence Journal. He has been replaced on the roster by infielder Gil Velazquez.

Our View: Lowell won't be eligible to return until the World Series, if the Sox can make it that far. Given his struggles of late, even if the team makes it to the Fall Classic, we wouldn't be counting on much from one of the teams most important RBI bats.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 10/6, 6:24 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Mike Lowell will not be in the Red Sox lineup in Game 4 on Monday because of his injured hip, according to the Associated Press. "We’ll get him looked at," manager Terry Francona said. "We have some decisions to make. Maybe one decision is to do nothing. Some of it is going to depend on what the doctors say what we needed to do with him."

Our View: The Red Sox may have no choice but to shut Lowell down if they move on in the playoffs as it's tough to waste a roster spot on a guy if he is limited to just pinch hitting. Kevin Youkilis will continue to play at third with Mark Kotsay filling in at first.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 10/6, 7:32 AM CT
Mike Lowell could barely walk as he came into the clubhouse after Game 3, according to the Boston Globe. He had difficulty putting on his pants and when asked if he would play in Game 4, he answered, "I don't know. We'll see Monday."

Our View: Lowell has looked sluggish while roaming third base, and has also looked overmatched at the plate.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSunday 10/5, 5:04 PM CT
Mike Lowell (hip) will be in the starting lineup for the Red Sox for Game 3 of their ALDS matchup with the Angels, according to the Seattle Post Intelligencer.

Our View: Lowell has been bothered, especially in the field, by his ailing hip. Reports are that he feels good so he will return to the lineup to see if his body is strong enough to allow him to contribute.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSaturday 10/4, 6:50 PM CT
Mike Lowell was held out of Game 2 due to his ailing hip, but manager Terry Francona indicated that he will return to the lineup in Game 3, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Boston holds a 2-0 lead over the Angels, and Lowell will be in action when they try to close out the best-of-five series Sunday at Fenway Park.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 10/3, 6:07 PM CT
The Boston Globe has confirmed what many saw coming - Mike Lowell will not be in Friday's starting lineup for Game 2 of the ALDS due to his injured hip. Mark Kotsay will replace him at first base.

Our View: Lowell is one of the more dependable hitters on the Red Sox and he may be called upon to pinch-hit in the game. His hip does bother him when he runs, but not as much when swinging the bat.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 10/3, 7:49 AM CT
Boston third baseman Mike Lowell might not be able to play Game 2, as he was clearly in pain during Game 1, according to the Boston Globe. "It's not just like a nagging hamstring he's dealing with, so again, I'll continue to think. I really don't know quite what we're going to do," said manager Terry Francona.

Our View: Lowell is dealing with an injured hip, and is still in a lot of pain. Francona will not make his decision until later in the day.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 10/1, 7:51 AM CT
Mike Lowell is projected to start at third base in Game 1 against the Angels, according to the Boston Globe. While the Globe projects him to start, manager Terry Francona remains uncertain and said, "We just don't know yet. I thought Mikey Lowell looked pretty good. I thought it was very encouraging the way he moved around. The movement he did do didn't grab at him. That was very encouraging."

Our View: Lowell was a driving force during Boston's World Series run last season, but the 34-year-old failed to stay healthy this season, and it remains to be seen if he can make an impact in their bid to win a third title in five years.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 9/30, 5:02 PM CT
Mike Lowell (hip) took fielding practice on Tuesday afternoon and looked to moving without discomfort, according to the Hartford Courant.

Our View: Lowell hasn't been troubled hitting, it has been the fielding that has held him back. Even with the way he looked tonight, he is still not certain to be named to the playoff roster.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 9/29, 5:39 PM CT
The Boston Globe reports that third baseman Mike Lowell took batting practice on Monday but was unable to take grounders at Fenway. "Hitting is not really the problem," manager Terry Francona said of Lowell. "In fact, I think he said that's really the easy part. It's some of the lateral movement and I don't know if it's start or stopping -- somewhat stopping, change of direction, things like that while he's rotating -- but he did have a pretty good day."

Our View: Lowell is dealing with a painful hip injury and should not be counted upon for the NLDS. He was one of the more consistent threats for the Red Sox this season but was only able to participate in 113 games.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxThursday 9/25, 9:05 AM CT
Though Boston third baseman Mike Lowell has seen his right hip improve, he may not be able to play in any of the team's final games in preparation for the playoffs, according to the Boston Globe. "For the sake of getting him four or five at-bats, I would hate to hurt him on Saturday or Sunday and lose him for the playoffs," said manager Terry Francona.

Our View: Fantasy owners who haven't ditched Lowell from their rosters already should do so and pick up someone else in the season's final few games.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 9/23, 4:54 PM CT
Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell will take batting practice on Tuesday and then work on his fielding Wednesday as he continues to rehab his right hip, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: There is not an exact date for Lowell's return as of yet, but it is possible that he will return before the end of the season.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 9/23, 7:36 AM CT
Mike Lowell's sore right hip is improving, according to the Boston Globe. Manager Terry Francona said, "Lowell's hip improved yesterday, but not to the point where he's going to play in a game. I don't know if it's rapid improvement, but it's improvement. We'll just keep monitoring him and do the best we can."

Our View: Lowell can run straight ahead with little trouble, but moving side-to-side aggravates the slight tear in the labrum of his right hip. Francona hoped Lowell would be ready to return as early as Wednesday, but that no longer seems possible. He shall remain on the bench in fantasy leagues.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 9/19, 5:19 PM CT
Mike Lowell will take the weekend off according to the Boston Herald. He has been dealing with an ailing hip. He’s been assured he does risk further damage to the hip but he is taking new medication and the training staff want the hip to cool down before he resumes playing baseball.

Our View: Lowell hopes to play next week but nothing is certain at this point. Kevin Youkilis will continue to see time at third base in his absence and Sean Casey will likely make more starts at first base.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxThursday 9/18, 4:59 PM CT
Not much has changed on the injury front for Mike Lowell but he did say on Thursday that he felt a slight improvement from a day ago, according to the Boston Globe. Lowell hoped to play in the series opener against the Blue Jays but it is still not known if that will be the case.

Our View: With the Red Sox most likely in the playoffs as either the division winner or wild card, they will probably take it slow with Lowell to make sure he is ready for postseason play. With fewer at-bats Lowell will probably see his production lower.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 9/17, 4:15 PM CT
As expected, Mike Lowell will not be in the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Rays according to the Boston Globe. The third baseman is dealing with a torn labrum in his hip that will eventually require surgery.

Our View: If Boston wasn't in sucha heated race, they would probably shut Lowell down. As it stands, he will likely see spot duty from here until the end of the season. Expect his production to take a hit as a result.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 9/17, 11:38 AM CT
Boston is expected to be without third baseman Mike Lowell for tonight's game versus Tampa Bay at the Trop. Lowell left Tuesday's game with a sore hip and will be unavailable for a few games while he heals.

Our View: The Sox will also be without outfielder Jason Bay who is with his pregnant wife.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 9/16, 10:18 PM CT
Mike Lowell showed obvious discomfort in his hip on Tuesday night according to the Boston Globe. Earlier in the day it was announced that he is playing with a torn labrum in his right hip, and he will probably need to undergo surgery after the season

Our View: Hopefully, Lowell won't have to be shut down, but the Sox may have to consider it if the condition worsens or if he becomes physically limited.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 9/16, 8:35 AM CT
Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell is playing with a torn labrum in his right hip, and he will probably need to undergo surgery after the season, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Lowell, who has been dealing with this since late June, got an injection to try and quell the pain, and says he will simply play through it. Fantasy owners should take note, however, that his average since the All-Star break is just over .220, so finding an alternative the last couple weeks of the season may be wise.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSaturday 9/13, 9:04 AM CT
Mike Lowell has been experiencing pain in his hip, according to the Boston Globe. "I said, 'Help me out here. We've got four games in about 30-something hours,' " manager Terry Francona said. "So, we kind of walked through the possibilities. Because he is a little sore, he's got some things we need to be cognizant of."

Our View: Lowell was activated from the DL last week following a strained oblique. The oblique is fine, but now he has the hip to deal with. We're betting it won't keep him out of the lineup, though.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 9/8, 9:39 AM CT
Mike Lowell had a scheduled day off Sunday and was not out of the lineup due to an injury or setback related to his strained oblique, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View: Lowell has been hot since returning as he is 5-for-9 with one homer and four RBI. He should be active in lineups this week.

He homered in his first at-bat since Aug. 12. The third baseman added a two-run single in the fourth and an RBI double in the ninth.

Our View: Lowell, like so many other Red Sox players, seems to get hot at the right times and look for him to havea good September. If he was dropped in your league because of his injury, hurry up and grab him.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 9/5, 4:32 PM CT
Mike Lowell is making his first appearance since August 12th on Friday against the Rangers. He had been out with a strained oblique.

Our View: If Lowell was dropped in your league because of his injury, he is a good pickup for September. He is penciled in to hit sixth for the Sox which should give him plenty of RBI opportunities.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 9/3, 9:19 AM CT
The Boston Globe indicates that Mike Lowell remains on target in his recovery from a strained right oblique, and should return this weekend against the Rangers.

Our View: He won't require a rehab game to get ready, and fantasy owners should be able to pencil him back into lineups for the new week. There is urgency in Boston to get him back, as the club needs to maintain their lead in the AL wildcard race.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 9/1, 6:11 PM CT
Updating an earlier story, Mike Lowell took batting practice for the first time on Monday since suffering his left oblique injury and he sounded optimistic that he will be able to return shortly, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Lowell is targeting the Red Sox series with the Rangers this weekend for a return, though he will likely need to have a couple of solid batting practice sessions to make his return this weekend a reality.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 9/1, 8:23 AM CT
Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell will likely take batting practice on Monday as he continues his rehab from an oblique strain, according to the Boston Globe.

Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 8/29, 8:20 AM CT
Boston third baseman Mike Lowell hit balls off a tee and wants to resume playing soon, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Lowell is suffering from an oblique strain, but has progressed to the point that he was complaining about wanting to play. The Red Sox prefer to take it slow so he doesn't re-aggravate the malady.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 8/26, 4:42 PM CT
Mike Lowell seems to be progressing in his recovery from an oblique injury. He'll begin hitting off a tee tomorrow, according to the Boston Herald.

Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 8/25, 9:19 AM CT
Mike Lowell is scheduled to speak with medical director Dr. Thomas Gill today to get approval to head to New York, according to the Boston Globe. He is on the DL with a strained right oblique.

"He wanted to go and we have no problem," said manager Terry Francona. "We know what he's going to do." Lowell is coming back from a strained oblique.

Our View: It will be a while before Lowell is ready to return to the lineup. We'll keep you posted on his progress.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 8/13, 3:06 PM CT
Mike Lowell has landed on the 15-day DL due to his strained right oblique, according to the Boston Globe. David Pauley has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill his spot on the roster.

Our View: Kevin Youkilis should see time at third base with Sean Casey covering first. Oblique injuries can linger and are known to be slow to heal, meaning Lowell may be out of action for more than 15 days.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 8/13, 11:16 AM CT
Updating an earlier note, Mike Lowell is likely headed for the DL due to his strained right oblique, according to the Boston Herald. Oblique injuries could be slow to heal, and he was already dealing with a sore right hip. He said, "It’s frustrating because I’ve never had this happen before. I’d like to avoid the DL, but the doc said it’s a possibility. I think right now it’s probably too early. Today after the MRI, they’ll have a lot more information."

Our View: If Lowell lands on the DL, Kevin Youkilis could move over to third base, with Sean Casey covering first.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 8/13, 9:40 AM CT
Mike Lowell strained his right oblique during an at-bat on Tuesday, according to the Boston Globe. He said, "I took those two swings my last at-bat, the first one I felt like a little grab on my side, the second one I felt something a lot more significant. The last pitch I kind of panicked, I didn't know what to do. I didn't think I could swing. I was kind of hoping he'd just flop a curveball or something. I've never had this happen to me before. It's just frustrating."

Our View: He is hoping the injury is not too severe, and will have an MRI Wednesday. Lowell could barely stand after Tuesday's game.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 8/5, 8:19 PM CT
Mike Lowell is back in the lineup on Tuesday night, one day after receiving a cortisone shot in his right hip. "They said the anti-inflammatory part would feel good within the first 24 hours and then, whatever the medicine is, might take three or four days," Lowell informs MLB.com. "Getting out of bed, my abs didn't hurt, so I've got to believe that's a good sign. I haven't jogged or anything, but moving around feels a little better. I'm hoping that's a step in the right direction."

Our View: It sounds like Lowell will need to deal with some pain for the remainder of the season. The injury popped up in late June/early July, and he hit only .215 with one homer last month. That's not a very good sign for his continuing fantasy value.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 8/5, 11:46 AM CT
With the Red Sox in Kansas City Monday night, Mike Lowell was back in Boston receiving a cortisone shot in his right hip flexor, according to the Boston Globe.

Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 8/4, 1:27 PM CT
Mike Lowell is expected to sit out Monday's game to rest his strained right hip, according to the Boston Globe. He struggled to get to second after his fourth-inning blast to the left-center-field gap against Oakland Sunday, and he is expected to receive a shot, cortisone or some other pain reliever to aid his ailment.

Our View: Adjust your lineups accordingly. He has hits if four straight games, but hasn't homered since the Fourth of July.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSaturday 8/2, 4:00 PM CT
Mike Lowell is in Boston's lineup Saturday after being forced out of Friday's game with a strained hip, according to the Providence Journal.

Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 8/1, 9:10 PM CT
Mike Lowell was removed from the Red Sox game with the A's in the 10th inning after legging out a ball with an apparent leg injury.

Our View: No report is yet available from the team, but Lowell appeared to grab at his right groin after crossing first base. He left the field under his own power. More details to follow.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 7/4, 5:59 PM CT
Mike Lowell helped lead the Red Sox to a 6-4 win on Friday against the rival Yankees in the Bronx, as he went 2-for-4 with four RBI. He hit a double and a three-run homer.

Mike Lowell hit a solo home run off Houston closer Jose Valverde in the ninth, but Jason Varitek struck out to end the Red Sox threat. The Boston third baseman went 4-for-4 in the losing effort raising his average from .285 to .297.

Our View: Lowell, who had a horrible April, has come on strong in hitting his 12th home run over the last two months.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxFriday 6/13, 2:23 PM CT
A thunder and lightning storm is threatening tonight's contest against the Red Sox and Reds at the Great American Ballpark, according to the Providence Journal. There is also heavy rain, and the forecast calls for storms throughout the night.

Our View: This is Boston's only trip to Cincinnati for this year, so it remains to be seen how the game would be made up if postponed. Saturday's game will be at 4 o'clock because it is scheduled to telecast by FOX-TV, which makes a day-night doubleheader possibility a problem for that day. On Sunday, the Sox and Reds could play a day-nighter on getaway day. The team's could also find a day that they are both off to make up the game.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSunday 6/1, 5:02 PM CT
Mike Lowell hit his seventh home run of the season and the Boston Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles 9-4 on Sunday.

Our View: Lowell, who was homerless with no RBI in April, hit six home runs and drove in 22 runs in May. Today's long ball is a solid start to hopefully another productive month.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxThursday 5/22, 4:29 PM CT
Mike Lowell slugged a grand slam for the Red Sox to help propel them to an 11-8 victory over the Royals. Lowell also had two other hits on the day and three runs scored.

Our View: Lowell is the perfect example of the idea of regression to the mean. Through his first 15 games he did not have a single RBI, but over his last 17 games he has knocked in 19 runs. You can only keep a good man down for so long. Are you listening Andruw Jones?
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSaturday 5/17, 11:25 PM CT
Mike Lowell hit a two-run homer and doubled in a pair of runs, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-6 on Saturday and complete a sweep of their day-night doubleheader.

Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxWednesday 5/7, 11:08 PM CT
Mike Lowell had his second big game in three nights with a home run, three hits and three RBI against the Tigers.

Our View: Lowell has finally found his stroke after dealing with injury for most of the early season. Lowell still figures to be a top-15 third basemen this year if he can stay on the field, so keep that in mind if his name comes up in trade talks.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 5/5, 10:15 PM CT
Mike Lowell hit his first home run and drove in his first runs of the 2008 season on Monday night. In a 6-3 win over the Tigers, Lowell started the Boston scoring with a two run shot of Jeremy Bonderman in the top half of the second inning.

Our View: Lowell had gone 54 at-bats without an RBI. In his defense, the third baseman had been playing hurt for most of April.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 5/5, 11:12 AM CT
Mike Lowell is yet to register an RBI (or a homer) over 54 at-bats this season, according to MLB.com. He recently returned from the DL due to his thumb ailment.

Our View: Lowell was projected by many to be a bust for 2008 after recording 21 homers and 120 RBI last season, and he is wearing that collar well so far.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxThursday 5/1, 11:01 PM CT
Mike Lowell went 1-for-4 on Thursday night and he continues to work on his stroke after missing time due to a sore left thumb.

Our View: Lowell is just 2-for-11 without a single run produced in three games since returning to the lineup. With Sean Casey on the DL and Kevin Youkilis back at first base, Lowell will need to pick things up to help the offense from third base.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxTuesday 4/29, 3:10 PM CT
Mike Lowell has been activated from the DL (sprained left thumb) and is going to return to his post at third base tonight against Toronto, according to the Boston Globe. The team designated pitcher Bryan Corey for assignment to make room on the roster for Lowell.

Our View: Lowell was only 6-for-30 with no homers or RBI before getting hurt, and you should pencil him back into your lineups with caution for his first game or two back in action.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 4/28, 12:33 PM CT
Mike Lowell is likely to return from the DL on Tuesday, according to the Boston Herald. He was recovering from a sprained left thumb and commented, "I don’t have any pain. Overall, I feel pretty good. I passed the tests they wanted me to pass. I’m looking forward to getting back."

Our View: It is good news that he is returning, but he was only 6-for-30 with no homers or RBI before getting hurt, and you should pencil him back into your lineups with caution for his first game or two back in action.

Red Sox 3B Mike Lowell is progressing towards return as he works with Triple-A Pawtucket, according to the Providence Journal. Lowell served as the team's DH in his first game with the minor-league affiliate, the first of a scheduled 20-day rehab assignment as Lowell works to return from a sprained left thumb, and went 1-for-5 at the plate.

Our View: It may have been just one hit, but that hit contributed two runs to a 6-1 victory over the Syracuse Chiefs. "I was actually happy about recognizing pitches," said Lowell. "I saw a lot of different pitches. Squared up a couple of balls, so that was good. Overall, I don't think there's anything negative, so I think that's good." Lowell sprained his thumb while making a diving stop on April 9th against the Detroit Tigers, and while the Sox are bringing him along cautiously, Lowell feels he is progressing and should be on track for his scheduled return in early May.

Mike Lowell took batting practice on Tuesday and didn't have much problem with his sprained left thumb. "He looked great," manager Terry Francona tells MLB.com. "I was waiting to have him kind of nurse the bat through the zone. He looked great. Again, how he responds to that is important." If all goes well, Lowell could begin minor league rehab work by this weekend.

Our View: Lowell could be back with the Sox in about a week, provided he doesn't have any setbacks. We'll continue to update his progress.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxMonday 4/21, 12:17 PM CT
Mike Lowell is expected to take batting practice on Tuesday, his first such action since spraining his left thumb on April 9. The club doesn't know if he'll be ready to be activated by Friday, though. "If I'm healthy, I don't see why I wouldn't," Lowell tells MLB.com. "If I'm pain-free, I'm hoping. We'll see. It's a work in progress."

Our View: Fantasy owners can generally plan on getting Lowell back into their lineups next week. We'll continue to update his progress.
Mike Lowell, 3B, Boston Red SoxSaturday 4/19, 10:14 PM CT
Mike Lowell continues to progress well without any setbacks with his injured thumb, this according to MLB.com. "Barring setbacks -- and we're still kind of early into this -- we might be getting into a place where maybe we're a week away from him playing in a game," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "At least we're looking at some timetables."

Our View: Lowell has been limited to swinging off a tee, but at least it sounds like things are progressing to the point where it's realistic to think that he could return to action by the start of May.

"It's not just the coaches, it's the staff, the trainers, a lot of people are affected by this," Mike Lowell tells the Boston Globe. "I'm so super proud of this team. When we put it to a vote it was unanimous, we're all in agreement that we're not going to put up with this." The coaches assumed they were going to receive a $40,000 stipend from the league for making the two-game trip, but that is not currently the case.

In addition, there are also reports the Yankees would like to sign Lowell to play first base (assuming they re-sign A-Rod). What complicates things even further is that the Yankees and Phillies are expected to come over the top with their offers, according to the Boston Herald. There's been speculation the Red Sox could get into the Alex Rodriguez bidding this winter, but team president Larry Lucchino has made it clear that Mike Lowell is the team's primary focus this offseason, according to the Boston Herald. "Any discussion of any other possible third baseman is going to be secondary and down the road, so I'm not going to get into A-Rod - he's a tremendous ballplayer, there's no doubt he is. He had an extraordinary year. He's still a relatively young player, there's so many good things you can say about A-Rod - whether he is the right fit here is a question we'll look at after we focus on Mike Lowell." The Sox hold exclusive negotiating rights with Lowell for the next 10 days, and they'd probably like to nail something down before he hits the market. The veteran has also made it clear he prefers to stay in Boston, which might be why he has yet to file for free agency.
