Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 4/5, 5:59 PM CT
According to MLB.com, Matt Clement's comeback attempt is officially over. The perennially banged up starter has had enough and decided to hang up his spikes. He will officially announce his retirement in the near future.

Our View: It's not easy to come back from shoulder complications and Clement's situation just hammers home that point. He had nine seasons in the big leagues, but hasn't pitched a Major League inning since 2006. Fantasy owners won't miss him. Bon voyage, Matt.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 3/27, 5:07 PM CT
Updating a previous report, Matt Clement will report to Triple-A, according to the Globe and Mail.

Our View: Clement hasn't pitched a Mjor League inning since 2006, and he had a 6.61 ERA that season. Don't let Clement factor into your fantasy plans. Unless you're a masochist.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 3/24, 4:54 PM CT
The Blue Jays have reassigned pitcher Matt Clement to minor league camp. He will take some time before deciding if he wants to pitch in Triple-A, MLB.com reports.

Our View: This news means the Blue Jays will hand two rotation spots to the group of Ricky Romero, Brad Mills, and Scott Richmond. Clement is still trying to come back from his 2006 right shoulder surgery, and we imagine retirement is a consideration despite only being 34 years old.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 3/4, 5:23 PM CT
Matt Clement looked good again, throwing three scoreless innings against Team USA Wednesday. He struck out one and never allowed a hitter to reach base.

Our View: This improves Clement's chances of making the Blue Jays' rotation, but he still has a long way to go. He may be a late option in AL-only leagues, but draft with care as his track record is littered with injuries and attitude question marks.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 2/27, 5:11 PM CT
Matt Clement looked decent against the Tigers on Friday, giving up one run off one hit and two walks in two innings of work.

Our View: Clement, who has not been relevant since his average 2005 campaign with Boston, is competing with Mike Maroth and possibly a few others for the No. 5 spots in Toronto's rotation. Friday's outing didn't really hurt him, but certainly didn't help either.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 1/28, 4:41 PM CT
MLB.com reports that the Blue Jays will give pitcher Matt Clement a legitimate shot at winning the fifth spot in their starting rotation this Spring. He signed a minor-league deal with Toronto in December.

Our View: Clement has not pitched in the majors since 2006 when he had rotator cuff surgery. The Cardinals gave him a similar shot last season, but he was again hampered by injuries. Don't rely on him for fantasy purposes.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 12/11, 1:06 PM CT
Matt Clement has agreed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays, according to WEEI Sports Radio.

Our View: Clement was released by the Cardinals back in August and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2006, when he underwent right shoulder surgery. The Jays heard that Clement is healthy, but it remains to be seen if he can make a successful comeback.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 12/10, 1:44 PM CT
The Jays have inquired about Matt Clement, according to the Toronto Star.

Our View: Clement was released by the Cardinals back in August and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2006, when he underwent right shoulder surgery. The Jays heard that Clement is healthy, and GM JP Ricciardi noted that he is open to anything. Clement would benefit from a fresh start with Toronto, but it remains to be seen if he can make a successful comeback.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 8/2, 6:35 PM CT
Matt Clement has been released by the Cardinals, according to the AP. He has not pitched in the major leagues since 2006, when he underwent right shoulder surgery.

Our View: He will now have to continue his comeback bid with another team.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 7/8, 8:58 AM CT
Matt Clement cleared waivers Monday morning, and the Cardinals immediately optioned him to Triple-A Memphis, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: The former All-Star (2005) will continue his prolonged attempt to return to the majors as a reliever. He has not allowed a run in four relief innings for Memphis.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 7/1, 2:57 PM CT
Matt Clement pitched well in a relief role for Triple-A Memphis, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He walked one batter and struck out two in one inning.

Our View: Clement has not shown enough to warrant a job in the Cardinals starting rotation, so he will have to make due as a reliever. There is no timetable for his return to the big leagues, and even if he does get called up soon, it will be in a middle relief role and won't warrant fantasy consideration.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 6/23, 11:29 AM CT
Matt Clement has been moved to the bullpen at Triple-A Memphis, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. GM John Mozeliak said, "At this point, we believe Mulder is farther ahead. Clement has had some good outings but has not been able to do it every fifth day."

Our View: He had a tough outing on Friday, as he tries to recover from right shoulder surgery. He hasn't pitched since 2006, when he held a poor 6.61 ERA and 1.76 WHIP over 65.1 innings.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 6/18, 9:10 AM CT
Matt Clement's next rehab outing will come on Friday at Triple-A Memphis, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes. He is recovering from right shoulder surgery and is 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA through three rehab outings.

Our View: It sounds like teammate Mark Mulder is ahead of Clement at this point, which means Matt is likely two starts away from being considered for a move to the majors. We're not confident that he'll be able to help fantasy teams much.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 6/11, 10:32 AM CT
GM John Mozeliak said Matt Clement, who is coming back from shoulder surgery, could be back with the Cardinals by the end of the month, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Clement struggled in his rehab start at Double-A Springfield on Sunday, allowed six runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts over five innings.

Our View: Clement's first rehab outing was much better. The Cards could use him in the rotation with the injury to Adam Wainwright.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 6/9, 9:55 AM CT
Matt Clement struggled in his rehab start at Double-A Springfield on Sunday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Clement threw 75 pitches, 45 of which were strikes. Clement allowed six runs (three earned) on seven hits over five innings, with three walks, and two strikeouts. One of his hits surrendered went for a solo homer.

Our View: That was his second rehab outing. He is recovering from shoulder surgery, and continues to build up "competitive strength" on his arm. He didn't fare well on Sunday, but he did end the day pain-free.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 6/3, 8:35 PM CT
St. Louis RHP Matt Clement completed his first minor-league rehab assignment today, and the reports indicate it went well, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Clement threw with solid velocity pitching for Class-A Palm Beach, completing six innings of work with no runs allowed on just one hit, striking out five without a walk surrendered. Clement used just 73 pitches to earn 18 outs along the way, hitting 88 mph on the radar gun with curveballs and sliders thrown in the mix. He will start again in five days as Palm Beach faces Tampa.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 5/30, 8:17 PM CT
Matt Clement will begin a rehab assignment on Tuesday, according to MLB.com. Clement has been trying to get up to full game strength since spring training started as he recovers from right shoulder surgery, and he will start a 30-day Minor League rehab assignment when he pitches for Class-A Palm Beach.

Our View: He is still a long way from returning to the Cardinals, and isn't worth waiting for when he returns as he held a 6.61 ERA and 1.76 WHIP over 12 starts back in 2006.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 4/17, 11:03 AM CT
Matt Clement could begin a rehab assignment as soon as early May, as he continues his recovery from right shoulder surgery, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He has shown marked improvement in his arm strength, but the team noted that they want to make sure when he goes on a rehab assignment that he's really at a point where he has the ability to let it loose.

Our View: This is favorable news, but he is still a long way from returning to the Cardinals.

Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 3/25, 2:22 PM CT
Matt Clement threw a pair of innnings in minor league action on Tuesday, according to MLBblogs.com. He didn't actually complete either inning, as each time they called the inning off when he reached a certain count, 20 pitches in the first inning, and 17 in the second. Clement reportedly had a lot of movement on his ball, but both his command and velocity were lacking a bit. He was pitching at 84-85 mph, and favorably hit 86 twice. Of the seven batters he faced, he walked four, struck out one, retired another on a flyball out and one reached on an error. He got three swinging strikes. That was a positive day for Clement as he continues to recover from shoulder surgery.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 3/17, 10:44 AM CT

Matt Clement threw a bullpen session Friday for the first time since scaling back his activity to a long-toss schedule, according to MLB.com. "I was encouraged," Clement said. "It was one step, but I thought it was a good step. There was definitely a difference." Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 2/24, 5:29 PM CT
Matt Clement had another aggressive session of long toss Saturday. Pitching coach Dave Duncan, happy with Clement's progress, has suggested the right-hander continue on the long-toss program until ready to take the mound. "He asked, 'Why even go on the mound?'" Clement said in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "We're getting so much out of the long toss. Let's keep pounding that so that when you go on the mound, you stay on the mound." Clement is coming back from shoulder surgery and won't be ready at the start of the season.

Matt Clement, who's coming back from shoulder surgery, will alter his throwing program in the coming days and is not expected to be ready for opening day, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I will be surprised if he's ready for opening day," pitching coach Dave Duncan said Sunday. "Even if he is ready, it's likely we'll have him compete somewhere else just to get him in the swing of things." Clement hasn't pitched since June of 2006. Anthony Reyes, Brad Thompson and Todd Wellemeyer now all have a better shot at opening the year in the Cards' rotation.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 2/13, 9:49 AM CT
Matt Clement, coming back from shoulder surgery, had been throwing indoors and Tuesday was his first throw off a mound. He said it was similar to what he normally would be doing this time of year. "I expect a normal spring and, as of right now, I expect to do everybody else is doing," Clement said in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "The big thing is I don't want to waste my throws. The important throws have to be when I'm on the mound, and we'll see how my arm reacts." Clement has yet to try throwing breaking balls.
Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 1/3, 4:36 PM CT
Matt Clement signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals Thursday. Terms of the deal aren't known, but it's thought to be an incentive-based deal that includes a club option for 2009, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Matt is a very talented pitcher who has been beset by injury the last few years," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said in a statement released by the team. "Based on our findings from his rehabilitation last season and his recent physical, we feel that he can be a solid addition to our starting rotation, and should have no limitations upon reporting to spring training." Clement, who did not pitch at all in 2007, will compete for a rotation spot this spring.

Matt Clement threw 50 pitches off a bullpen mound on Monday, according to the AP. Manager Terry Francona doesn't expect Clement to rejoin the Red Sox this season, but said he could pitch by mid-September in the instructional league.

Matt Clement, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 7/29, 7:22 AM CT
Matt Clement said he felt like his old self while tossing a 38-pitch bullpen session on Saturday. "I got to the point where I was ready to start throwing my slider because of the way I was throwing," Clement told the Boston Herald. "I wasn’t allowed to, but it was real encouraging." He should be able to test out his slider on flat ground next week. If all continues to go well with his recovery from September shoulder surgery, Clement could go on a rehab assignment in August and rejoin the Red Sox in September.
