John Patterson, P, Wednesday 1/7, 1:07 PM CT
John Patterson has decided to hang up his cleats due to chronic pain in his right forearm, according to MLB.com. Patterson said, "I started throwing about a month ago, and it hasn't been going well. I have my good days and I have my bad days. So I decided to not play anymore. I'm going to retire."

Our View: The 30-year-old underwent two surgeries, but they did not relieve the problem. He holds a career record of 18-25, with a 4.32 ERA.

The Rangers have released John Patterson, according to MLB.com. The veteran, who was signed to a minor-league deal after being released by the Nationals, is expected to sidelined for the rest of the season by a sore forearm.

Our View: Patterson is worth tracking because of what he's accomplished in the past, but it's pretty clear he'll never again be what he once was.
John Patterson, P, Wednesday 5/7, 10:58 PM CT
As often happens with injured pitchers, John Patterson suffered a setback on Wednesday as he had to be shut down during his second start after experiencing soreness in his right forearm, according to MLB.com. "He was not happy with the way the ball was coming out of his hand, and he had some pain in his forearm again," Rangers pitching coach Mark Connor said. "Everything was going well until that second start."

Our View: Patterson is a long shot to add much of anything to the Rangers in the first half of the season, and at this point his ability to add anything at any point has to be in question.

He can take his release if he's not back in the majors by June 15.

According to the Rangers team website, the club is close to agreeing with right-handed pitcher John Patterson, who was released by the Nats earlier this week. The Rangers will reportedly offer Patterson a minor league deal. Kevin Millwood, Vicente Padilla, Jason Jennings, Kason Gabbard and Luis Mendoza are the current arms projected to fill out the Texas starting rotation, but any progress by Patterson would immediately qualify him to enter the mix. In the fantasy corner, pitching in the American league, in hitter-friendly Arlington, won't spike is value.

The Houston Chronicle suggested on Friday that the Astros are interested in recently released right-hander John Patterson . It only makes sense that more than one team will take a stab at garnering the services of Patterson, but for Houston, pitching is a huge need. "We'll take a look at it and see if anything makes sense," general manager Ed Wade told the Chronicle. "We'll look at the possibility of doing something." Patterson will find a job before spring camp breaks, but fantasy owners hope it is in the National League and away from Minute Maid Park.

In his deepest outing of the spring thus far, John Patterson found discomfort but signs of positive progress, according to the Associated Press. Patterson, who has missed much of the last two seasons because of a sore right forearm, struggled through four innings in humid, 89-degree temperatures two days after battling the flu, allowing six runs and eight hits, walked none and struck out two. "It's rehabilitation by fire, really," Patterson said. "The only way to do it is to go at it and go out and pitch. I'm not upset about today. ... You have to keep working forward." Under the circumstances, it is encouraging that Patterson came out and pitched this well. He was asked to do more with less and, for the most part, pitched well.

John Patterson had a rough 2007 when arm problems limited him to just 31.1 innings a year after he threw only 40.2 innings. Patterson eventually had surgery on his forearm and followed that up with a second surgery this past off-season. Evidently the second procedure solved his nerve issues and he feels he should be ready to go in 2008. "I'm throwing five to six days a week. I'm throwing bullpens [three days a week]. ... I've been really excited." Patterson posted a 3.13 ERA with 185 K in 2005 so he is certainly a darkhorse to monitor throughout spring training. MLB.com.
