Jeff Conine has re-joined the Marlins' as special assistant to the president. Conine, an original Marlin who was also a member of the team's two World Series champions, will perform a variety of duties. He will work in the community, provide instructional help to players, and scout prospects in the organization's minor-league system. "It became obvious when his playing days were over that we wanted him to be with us forever," Samson said.

Jeff Conine has retired from baseball and has moved on to a new challenge - completing an Ironman event, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "Crossing that finish line is my goal. That will be a major accomplishment," he said.

Our View: It sure will. Contestants have 17 hours to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and then run a marathon, which is 26.2 miles. And hey, who knows, maybe there will be fantasy Ironman one day.

Jeff Conine signed a one-year deal with the Marlins Friday and then promptly retired, according to the AP. The veteran won two World Series' with the Fish and is known throughout the organization as "Mr. Marlin." Conine finished his 17-year career with a .285 average, 214 home runs and 1,071 RBI.

Jeff Conine has stated in the past that he would consider retirement at the end of the season, but he indicated on Wednesday that he could return in 2007, according to the Baltimore Sun. "It all depends on the complexion of the team next year and what they do this offseason," Conine said when asked whether his projected role in 2007 will influence his thinking. "If they come back and say you're not going to get as much playing time because we're going to get this guy, this guy and this guy, if we're going to win, I might be fine with that." When Conine reaches 450 plate appearances this year (he topped 400 on Wednesday), a $2 million contract option will vest for 2007.
