Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 2/27, 12:52 AM CT
Octavio Dotel has been dealing with discomfort in his side, but he's expected to resume throwing next week, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "He's doing well," manager John Russell said. "We don't want him to come back too quick and start all over again. There's plenty of time. He knows his body. If there were two weeks left [in spring training], I'd be concerned. The worst thing we can do is bring him back too early. We'll make sure he's good to go."

Our View: At this point, there's no reason to think Dotel won't be ready for the start of the season. However, should his throwing session next week get pushed back, it may be time to start worrying.
Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 1/21, 1:07 PM CT
The Pirates have made their signing of Octavio Dotel official, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: The well-traveled, 36-year-old reliever will be the Bucs' stopper in 2010. He still strikes out a ton of batters, but also walks a lot, too. He will be a very middle-of-the-road option at closer next season.
Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 1/20, 10:06 PM CT
The Pirates have apparently finally signed reliever Octavio Dotel to a one-year, $3 million deal according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: This move has been in the making for some time now, and Dotel would seem to be the odds on favorite to close for the Bucs in 2010. In 62.1 innings for the White Sox last season, he punched out an impressive 75 batters.
Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 1/20, 8:26 AM CT
The Pirates remain close to signing Octavio Dotel, a move that could happen sometime this week, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: The Pirates are one of the few teams that Dotel could go to and immediately be in line as to close, so stay tuned. He's pitched pretty well the past few seasons and does have previous closing experience.
Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 12/23, 2:53 PM CT
Octavio Dotel has received a one-year, $3 million offer from the Pirates, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: Dotel remains an effective middle reliever and setup man. We'll have to wait and see if Dotel signs.
Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 9/30, 5:01 PM CT
Octavio Dotel may be done for 2009 due to a neck injury, according to the Daily Herald.

Our View: Matt Thornton would be the top candidate to close games if Dotel is done. Dotel has been erratic, as he carries a 3.32 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 62.1 innings.
Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 2/28, 8:31 PM CT
Octavio Dotel had a rough game for the Sox on Saturday, allowing two runs off of three hits and one walk in one inning. He did strike out two, otherwise the damage could've been much worse.

Our View: Dotel could close for the White Sox if Bobby Jenks were to be traded, but that seems highly unlikely at this point.
Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 7/10, 8:06 AM CT
Octavio Dotel is an option to close out ballgames while Bobby Jenks is on the DL, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Manager Ozzie Guillen said he will mix and match closers depending on the situation.

Our View: Dotel got the save in Wednesday's game, his first of the season, by striking out the side. He is still striking out batters at a rate of nearly 13 per nine innings, and if he is on the waiver wire and you need saves, picking him up could be a good idea.
Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 5/18, 1:37 PM CT
White Sox reliever Octavio Dotel has turned up the heat in recent outings, posting at least one strikeout in 17 of his last 18 appearances.

Our View: Dotel struck out the only batter he faced in Saturday's 301 win over San Francisco and has been giving the White Sox reliable middle relief over recent weeks. He now carries a record of 2-2 with an ERA of 3.06, touting 27 strikeouts versus nine walks, allowing 11 runs on 16 hits over 17 2/3 innings of work.

Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 3/23, 1:56 PM CT
Octavio Dotel was dominant over his lone inning of work against the Cubs on Saturday as he held them hitless with two strikeouts. He has been battling Scott Linebrink for the team's setup role, but he still holds a 11.05 ERA and will likely fall short in his bid.
Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 3/9, 8:23 PM CT

Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 1/15, 10:23 AM CT
The Orioles, still in need of a closer, have been in contact with Octavio Dotel's agent, according to the Baltimore Sun. However, the general feeling in Baltimore is that late-inning relief is not a top priority. Should the O's not bring in Dotel, they could look at Greg Aquino as an in-house option.
Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 11/9, 10:31 AM CT
Octavio Dotel declined a $5.5 million mutual option Thursday. It's likely that the Braves would have declined it if he hadn't, since they already have Rafael Soriano to close and don't want to pay so much for an injury-prone setup man, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Dotel will likely seek a closer job somewhere, but he may have to settle for a setup role.
Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 9/20, 10:55 AM CT
Octavio Dotel is likely to be activated from the DL today. He's been out six weeks with a triceps strain. "He's thrown back-to-back," manager Bobby Cox said Wednesday to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "He's going to take today off and he can pitch tomorrow."

Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 9/8, 6:44 AM CT
It remains unclear when Octavio Dotel may be able to return to game action. He had hoped to throw a bullpen session Friday, but that was pushed back a day or two, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Instead, he played some long toss in the outfield again. Dotel is recovering from a strained right shoulder and is running out of time to get back in the mix for the Braves this season.
Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 8/26, 6:37 AM CT
The good news is that Octavio Dotel was able to toss 25 pitches on the side Friday. The bad news is that he still didn't feel right, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution."I was expecting something better than what I saw yesterday," said Dotel on Saturday. He still hopes to return from his strained right shoulder, but he has no timetable set for when that might happen. If he were healthy, he'd have a shot at closing games now that Bob Wickman has been designated for assignment.

Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesMonday 7/30, 2:39 PM CT
The Braves may not be done dealing yet. Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com is reporting that Atlanta is nearing a deal for Octavio Dotel. Dotel would help fill a void left by the injured Mike Gonzalez. The Red Sox, Yankees, Tigers and Mariners also have shown interest in the reliever.
Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 7/27, 9:46 AM CT
Octavio Dotel would like to negotiate a long-term contract extension in order to stay with the Royals. "I like it here," Dotel told the Kansas City Star. "It's not like I want to be somewhere else. I like the players here. I like the coaches. I like everything about Kansas City. There's nothing not to like about the city or the club." Dotel is currently playing on a one-year deal that could pay him as much as $7.25 million if he reaches certain performance bonuses. The Royals have a couple of young closer candidates in Joakim Soria and Zack Grienke, so it's unlikely that they'd ink Dotel to a lucrative long-term deal rather than trade him for young talent before next week's trade deadline.
Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 7/24, 8:59 AM CT

Octavio Dotel gave up a two-run homer to Travis Hafner on Wednesday night, but the Royals still view him as their closer once he builds his stamina. “The fact of the matter is that Dotel came here to be a closer, and we feel that he has closer stuff and we just feel that he just makes our bullpen that much better,” manager Buddy Bell told the Royals’ official website.
Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 5/22, 7:55 PM CT
As expected, the Royals activated Octavio Dotel from the DL on Tuesday. Contrary to earlier reports, manager Buddy Bell plans to ease the right-hander back into the closer role, according to the AP. "What we're going to do with Dotel is probably pitch him in the seventh, eighth, maybe the sixth," manager Buddy Bell said before Tuesday night's game against the Cleveland Indians. "The problem with just putting him into the closer's role right now is that we're not really sure of his durability. He hasn't pitched in a while, so putting him in that role, I didn't think was the right thing to do." Dotel has yet to pitch this year due to a strained oblique.
Octavio Dotel, P, Pittsburgh PiratesMonday 5/21, 12:19 PM CT
The Royals will activate Octavio Dotel from the DL Tuesday and immediately insert him into the closer role. However, Joakim Soria and David Riske could still get a few save chances when Dotel needs to rest, according to the Kansas City Star. "We're going to talk to Octavio and see how he feels," manager Buddy Bell said. "I don't think he's ready to go three or four days in a row right away. So we still might use Soria or (David) Riske in some save situations."

With a closer, you’d like to know when he is available. I would guess that he is going to be in the closing role, but maybe not right away. We’ll have to see how he feels.”

He's expected to undergo an MRI today to determine the cause of the pain. “He was throwing well for the first 20 (pitches),” manager Buddy Bell said. “Then he felt something similar to what he had before. Same area. We’re not sure if he’s reinjured it or whether this is just part of the (recovery) process or what.
