Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 7/21, 2:04 PM CT
The LA Times is reporting that Angels pitcher Kelvim Escobar has made "no progress" in his recovery from shoulder irritation. Escobar hasn't even picked up a baseball in several weeks.

Our View: The Halos were hoping Escobar would be ready to join their bullpen for the stretch run this season, but it doesn't look like he will be pitching in another game this year. After his dynamite year in 2007, Escobar has thrown only five innings since.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 7/11, 9:58 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar passed a strength test on Friday afternoon, and is set to begin throwing again soon, according to the Los Angeles Time.

Our View: Don't hold your breathe, though. Escobar has thrown just five major league innings the past two seasons, and can't be counted on to help your fantasy team in 2009.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 6/24, 8:58 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar remains optimistic of returning to the Angels this season after experienced a pinching sensation in his surgically-repaired right shoulder after playing catch Monday, according to MLB.com. He said, "I should be fine. I am not going to push it, like before, but I think I can come back and help the team in the bullpen."

Our View: This is encouraging, and Escobar shall remain stashed in deeper fantasy leagues. He looks to remain out until at least late July.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 6/23, 8:32 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar experienced a pinching sensation in his ailing right shoulder after playing catch Monday and was slated to visit team orthopedist Lewis Yocum before Tuesday night's game against Colorado, according to the Orange County Register.

Our View: Escobar noted that he no longer feels like he is on the fast track to joining the Angels' bullpen. He is disappointed, as he expected to feel better by now. With his latest setback, the Angels could pursue a setup man for their bullpen before the July 31 trade deadline.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 6/20, 8:49 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar's return has been pushed back to next weekend at the earliest, the LA Times reports.

Our View: Escobar says he feels good despite the delay in his return. He is rehabbing from shoulder surgery and will land in the bullpen upon his eventual return. If he proves to be ineffective or suffers another setback beyond this one, the Angles may need to trade for a reliever to solidify their decimated bullpen.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 6/16, 4:11 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar does not expect to be ready to come off the DL when first eligible Monday, according to MLB.com. He said, "I do not think so. I am not going to rush it this time and try to do too much. I have the whole season to think about, and it is a long way to go. I do not want to come back too soon again and go through more pain and inflammation. I want to be smart this time."

Our View: When Escobar does return, he is expected to work out of the bullpen and not in the Angels' rotation, hence limiting his fantasy value. He is only worth holding in AL-only leagues.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 6/15, 6:58 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar has been placed on the 15-day DL by the Angels due to tightness in his shoulder, according to the Orange County Register.

Our View: The move is retroactive to his last trip to the mound, and the Angels are confident Escobar will be able to come off the DL Monday. There is belief that Escobar will work out of the bullpen when he returns as the club lost reliever Scot Shields for the remainder of the season.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 6/15, 11:43 AM CT
MLB.com reports that Kelvim Escobar anticipates being the eighth inning man for the Angels now that Scot Shields has been lost for the season. He will throw a bullpen session on Monday and hopes to return to game action soon afterward. "It's nothing new for me," Escobar said. "I've done it before - setting up, closing, middle relief, all of it."

Our View: Escobar seems to be taking the change in roles with an open mind. He did not become a full-time starter until 2004, his eighth season in the league. The Angels' bullpen has struggled all season, but hopefully Escobar can provide some stability. He will have to recondition his arm so that he is available for abck-to-back days, but he could be a factor in leagues that value holds. He could also be a factor to replace Brian Fuentes if he is ever shutdown. Escobar save 38 games in 2002 with the Jays and has a total of 59 career saves.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 6/13, 9:12 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar will attempt to throw on Monday, according to MLB.com. He is dealing with a lack of stamina in his surgically-repaired shoulder.

Our View: Escobar is feeling better, and he will return to the Angels as a reliever when ready to take on live hitters.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 6/11, 6:04 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar will be taken out of the Angels' rotation and will serve out of the bullpen, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: He was moved due to a lack of stamina in his surgically-repaired shoulder. He will not pitch again until the middle of next week, and may stay in the pen for the rest of the season. There is also a chance he could land on the DL. His fantasy stock takes a hit following this news, and is only worth holding in AL-only leagues.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 6/6, 8:59 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar made his return to the Angels' rotation on Saturday and took the loss as his team fell 2-1 to the Tigers. Escobar went five innings and allowed two runs on four hits while walking four and striking out five.

Our View: Pretty good debut for Escobar tonight. The walk total was a little high, but the five K's in five innings is encouraging. He should start going deeper into games as he gets reacclimated to pitching at this level, and he looks to be a good fantasy option going forward.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 6/5, 11:14 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar has been activated by the Angels following his long recovery from right shoulder surgery, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Escobar said he will start Saturday's game against the Tigers. He won 18 games last season with a 3.40 ERA, but could be rusty in his first start of 2009, and is worth holding out of fantasy lineups until he proves to be effective.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 6/2, 8:29 AM CT
The L.A. Times is reporting that Kelvim Escobar was shaky in his final rehab start for Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday. Escobar went five innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits while walking one and striking out two. He is scheduled to start Saturday for the Angels against Detroit.

Our View: This is not at all what the Angels were hoping to see from Escobar in his final rehab start. His fastball had good life at 91-to-94 MPH but he had problems controlling his off-speed pitches. Escobar once looked to be a solid add upon his return, but now he seems like a very risky play.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 5/23, 11:20 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar fared well in his first minor league rehab start with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Our View: His pitches clocked between 91-95 mph, and fired four strikeouts with just one walk and one hit over 4.2 innings. He threw 59 total pitches, and could return to the Angels after a few more rehab outings.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 5/18, 9:03 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar will throw a 60-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday or Wednesday, according to the AP. If it goes well, he will be sent to Single-A to begin a rehab assignment this weekend. Manager Mike Scioscia says the team believes he will able to return to the rotation during the first week of June. He is recovering from right shoulder surgery.

Our View: There has been some discussion that Escobar may work out of the bullpen. He was a closer at one point in his career for Toronto. The decision on where to use him will largely depend on how much stamina he can build prior to be activated. Escobar has not pitched since winning 18 games in 2007.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 5/13, 10:43 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar has resumed his rehab assignment in an extended spring training game Monday, according to the Los Angeles Times. He is recovering from right shoulder surgery.

Our View: Escobar could return to the Angels in early June, and shall remain stashed on fantasy rosters. He won 18 games in 2007, while maintaining a 1.27 WHIP.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 5/2, 6:33 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar could work in the Angels' bullpen rather than the rotation upon his return from right shoulder surgery in early June, according to the Los Angeles Times. Skipper Mike Scioscia said, "There is a possibility he will come back as a reliever. We want to stretch him out as a starter, evaluate what he is able to do and determine what role is best for him. We are not ruling anything out."

Our View: Obviously his fantasy value would take a hit if moved to the bullpen, but he is still worth stashing in AL-only leagues. He won 18 games with a 1.27 WHIP as a starter in 2008.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 4/25, 9:49 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar (shoulder) through a bullpen session on Saturday, according to MLB.com. He is not eligible to return from the 60-day DL until June 4.

Our View: Originally, the Angels had hoped Escobar would return at the start of May. However, an April 3 setback shut him down until today. Hopefully, he will be ready to return on June 4, but a lot can happen between now and then. It is encouraging that he is already performing bullpen sessions.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 4/23, 12:09 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar has been transferred to the 60-day DL by the Angels, according to the Orange County Register. Escobar was rehabbing from shoulder surgery, but has been hindered by tightness.

Our View: Escobar is now not eligible to return to the Angels' rotation until early-June. The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 4/22, 3:05 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar played catch Wednesday as he continues to rehab from shoulder surgery, according to the Orange County Register.

Our View: He has been dealing with tightness in his shoulder, and the source suggests that the Angels could transfer Escobar to the 60-day DL to free up room on the 40-man roster, which would delay his return to the Angels until early-June.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 4/17, 9:39 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar, who has been experiencing tightness in his surgically repaired right shoulder, is expected to resume throwing Friday, according to the Orange County Register. He said, "I want to play catch a few times then throw bullpens and get into games. I do not want to waste no more time."

Our View: Escobar does not believe the tightness set back his rehab, and is still aiming to return to the Angels' rotation in early-May.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 4/13, 1:01 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar has suffered a setback in his rehab from shoulder surgery, and is being shut down from throwing, according to the Orange County Register.

Our View: He is experiencing tightness in the front of his right shoulder, and will not resume throwing for a few days. He still feels he is ahead of schedule, and does not want to push it. He does not believe the tightness is anything but a bump in the road.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 4/7, 9:24 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, is expected to throw around 60 pitches this week to gear up for a rehab start with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

Our View: Skipper Mike Scioscia noted that Escobar feels great and his rehab has been going very well. Barring a setback, Escobar could be back in the Angels' rotation by May 1, and is worth stashing if dangling on the waiver wire.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 4/4, 7:36 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar threw 3.2 innings with 44 pitches as the Angels defeated the Padres 6-5 on Friday. He allowed three hits and two earned runs while failing to register a strikeout or walk. He is rehabbing from shoulder surgery which caused him to miss all of 2008 and he expects to be in the rotation by May 1.

Our View: Back in 2007, Escobar went 18-7 with a 3.40 ERA and 7.36 ERA. He is slightly ahead of schedule in his rehab and he's reported nothing but positives so far. If your league has a DL spot, he is certainly worth considering.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 3/24, 1:56 PM CT
Skipper Mike Scioscia believes Kelvim Escobar could return to the Angels' rotation by May 1, according to the Orange County Register. Scioscia said, "If the progression goes like we anticipate, he will be in our rotation before May 1." He is rehabbing from shoulder surgery.

Our View: This is great news, as the previous estimate by the club had him out until around the All-Star break. He feels great and was able to throw all of his pitches in Monday's minor league game.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 3/20, 9:45 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar, who is rehabbing from shoulder surgery, threw 30 pitches of live batting practice Thursday, according to the LA Times. Pitching coach Mike Butcher said, "He looks great. I am very happy for him and for us. He has put a lot of hard work into what you saw today. He has fought his way back to where he is now and is several months ahead of where we thought he would be."

Our View: He is slated to pitch in a minor league game Monday. He looks to be on target to return to the Angels' rotation in May.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 3/16, 7:57 PM CT
The Orange County Register reports that Kelvim Escobar threw 25 pitches of batting practice on Monday. "I felt strong," Escobar said afterwards.

Our View: Escobar missed all of last season due to shoulder surgery. Assuming there are no setbacks, he should be able to join the Angels rotation in May.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 3/12, 11:06 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar upped his bullpen session to 55 pitches Wednesday and should increase to 60 on Saturday, according to the LA Times. If all goes according to plan he could be throwing batting practice next week.

Our View: This is great news for the Angles, and it should put Escobar back on your fantasy radar. If his shoulder heals completely, expect to see the man who won 18 games with a 3.40 ERA in 2007 to reemerge.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 3/4, 8:14 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Kelvim Escobar threw 35 fastballs off of a mound on Wednesday. He reported afterwards the he is feeling "almost too good." He won't start throwing BP for another week, but teammates and coaches have been impressed with his rehab so far.

Our View: Escobar won 18 games in 2007, but a muscle tear in his shoulder caused him to miss all of 2008. He has some pretty nasty stuff, and if he can regain command of it all, he should have a nice season for the Angels.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 2/24, 8:42 AM CT
A calf strain suffered by Angels hurler Kelvim Escobar is a bit more serious than initially thought, and he won't be working out for the next few days, reports the L.A. Times.

Our View: The calf injury isn't the worry for Escobar. He's still recovering from shoulder surgery, and says he's ahead of schedule in that regard. He could be back by May, and would make a nice waiver-wire pickup for fantasy owners at that time.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 2/23, 11:42 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar was held out of workouts on Sunday after suffering a minor left calf strain during fielding drills, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Our View: The injury is not serious and should be healed over the next few days. Escobar's shoulder is still clearly the issue to be most concerned about, as it's expected to keep him out at least the first half of the season.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 2/18, 12:47 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar has taken the next step in his throwing program Tuesday, progressing from long-toss to throwing off flat ground, according to the Orange County Register. He reported no pain or stiffness and he said, "Everything feels good." He is is recovering from shoulder surgery.

Our View: This is encouraging news, but the 33-year-old hurler should only be drafted as a flier for deeper fantasy leagues.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 2/14, 3:18 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar and the Angels are optimistic he can return from his shoulder surgery before the All-Star break, according to MLB.com. Escobar said, "I feel great -- way ahead of schedule. I am feeling very good about things." Skipper Mike Sciosca added, "Escobar is ahead of schedule now. We are very encouraged that the latest he will be ready is midseason. He is throwing the ball 200 feet now, which is full long toss. That is way ahead of what the projection was."

Our View: The 33-year-old hurler should only be drafted as a flier for deeper leagues.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 8/1, 8:25 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar had shoulder surgery and is now looking forward to the next stage of his attempt to come back from a tear in his right labrum, according to MLB.com. "I feel good. Now I know I have to focus on one thing, and that's my rehab. I'll put everything into it and dedicate myself to getting back on the mound next season."

Our View: Estimates for his return to action range from nine to 12 months, so it will be quite a while before we will know if Escobar will be able to regain his once filthy stuff.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 7/22, 12:08 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar's surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder will happen on July 29, the AP reports.

Our View: We'll have a better timetable after the operation, but Escobar could easily be looking at a full year of rehab.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 7/11, 7:56 PM CT
The Orange County Register reports that Kelvim Escobar has opted to have surgery on the torn labrum in his right shoulder.

Our View: The team, as well as Escobar, delayed this decision for a while and it may come back to haunt them. He will miss nine to 12 months.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 7/9, 9:13 AM CT
GM Tony Reagins and agent Peter Greenberg have agreed to put off a decision regarding Kelvim Escobar undergoing season-ending surgery, according to the LA Times. The decision will be put off until at least Thursday. Angels' physician Lewis Yocum and Mets' orthopedist David Altchek have checked Escobar's torn labrum. The doctors have spoken on the phone and are scheduled to attend the same conference this week, where they will discuss Escobar's situation. Reagins said, "Once that occurs, a decision will be made if we move forward on surgery and the timing of the surgery. I wouldn't say surgery is the option, but it is an option."

Our View: Surgery would sideline him for at least a year, hence ending his bid to return to the Angels in 2008.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 7/8, 9:08 AM CT
It is becoming more likely that Kelvim Escobar will undergo season ending shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum, according to the LA Times. Escobar worked to strengthen his shoulder and made two starts in the minor leagues, but the last time he picked up a ball he was unable to complete 10 throws because of discomfort. Manager Mike Sciosca said, "It will be Escobar's decision and we're going to support it. It's a little disappointing. He's worked very hard to get to this point. But if surgery's the only thing that's going to get him back to where he needs to be, then it's obviously something he's going to need to look at."

Our View: Surgery would sideline him for at least a year, hence ending his bid to return to the Angels in 2008.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 7/5, 11:38 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar tried to throw on Friday afternoon, but he stopped short of 10 tosses due to further shoulder soreness. He plans to meet with Dr. David Altcheck, the Mets medical director, in the near future, and surgery may be the result. "The MRI was good," Escobar tells the Los Angeles Times. "They said muscles that didn't look good before looked a lot better. [But] something's causing me a lot of inflammation, and they don't know what it is. When I throw, it's taking longer than normal to recover."

Our View: We had a small ray of hope for Escobar to return this season, but this week's setback makes it seem unlikely.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 7/3, 8:13 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar is probably going to miss the rest of the year, according to the Los Angeles Times. "I woke up [Tuesday] and it was like, wow, it's painful," he told the paper.

Our View: Escobar will likely get an MRI, and may need another surgery, which would keep him out of the game until the middle of next season. Any fantasy owners hopeful of picking him up for the second half will now have to eliminate him as an option for pitching help.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 7/1, 7:59 PM CT
Earlier today we reported Angels pitcher Kelvim Escobar was struggling with discomfort but had pitched well in three scoreless innings for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga. Now reports comes from Orange County claiming Escobar may have in fact reaggravated the torn right labrum and could be looking at an extended rehab assignment, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The Angels report Escobar is expressing pain in the shoulder and that he could tell during warm-ups that something was wrong with his shoulder, yet he still decided to pitch and on Tuesday he admitted that it wasn't the right decision. Escobar said he is scheduled to meet with Dr. Lewis Yocum during the Angels' game against the A's on Tuesday night. He said he'll figure out his options once he meets with Yocum, but his return will definitely be delayed.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 7/1, 8:07 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar had some trouble warming up on Monday night but he pushed through it on his way to working three scoreless innings at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, according to the Orange County Register. ”I felt good and that’s the most important thing,” he said. ”I threw strikes and my changeup has been good."

Our View: Escobar threw in the 90's at times, but it was clear that this was just another in a series of steps that he hopes will culminate in him pitching out of the pen for the Angels at some point toward the end of July.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 6/24, 7:40 PM CT
Angels pitcher Kelvim Escobar will take another step towards a return to the majors on Wednesday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Escobar, recovering from a torn right labrum, will throw two innings in the Arizona Summer League. Manager Mike Scioscia confirmed that the pitcher would be limited to 30 pitches in the outing. Scioscia declined to give a specific timetable for the starter's return, citing the fact that Escobar could easily suffer setbacks, and Scioscia didn't want to speculate.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 6/21, 7:04 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar took another step forward Saturday in his recovery from a torn labrum. "Kelvim threw 30 pitches and did real well," manager Mike Scioscia said on MLB.com. "With his experience, the way he pitched last year, to have him as an option is going to be big." Escobar is scheduled to make a start on Thursday in the Arizona Summer League and will be limited to 30 pitches again.

Our View: It isn't clear at this point whether Escobar will be able to build up enough arm strength to return as a starter. It's more likely he'll come back as a reliever.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 6/21, 9:46 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar, who is recovering from a torn right labrum, will throw 45 pitches in a simulated game today at the Angels' spring training complex in Arizona, according to the LA Daily News.

Our View: If that goes well, he is scheduled to follow that up by pitching in an Arizona Summer League game sometime next week. He is on pace to return to the Angels in late July.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 6/20, 3:06 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar, who is recovering from a torn right labrum, is on his way to Tempe, Arizona to continue his rehab stint, according to MLB.com. He will throw a simulated game on Tuesday, and could pitch two innings in an Arizona Summer League game sometime next week.

Our View: He remains on pace to return to the Angels in late July, but his fantasy value won't be as high as when he won 18 games in 2007, especially since he could end working out of the bullpen.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 6/18, 10:19 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar took the mound on Tuesday. He threw 30 pitches to a catcher and then worked a two-inning simulated game against four Angels hitters. Escobar tells the Los Angeles Times that it's "a big step for me." The right-hander adds, "I'm very pleased, very happy. The most important thing [is] I felt stronger. The next few days are going to be the most important. See how my arm responds." Escobar has a tear in his right labrum, and he is attempting to return without surgery.

Our View: It all goes well, Escobar could begin a minor league rehab assignment by the end of June and put himself on pace to return in late July. We're not expecting him to be nearly as valuable in fantasy leagues as he was in 2007, and there's still talk of him pitching in relief.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 6/14, 7:47 PM CT
Angels RHP Kelvim Escobar reports no feelings of pain or discomfort in his rehabbed shoulder today, one day after completing a bullpen session, and the team anticipates they will put the hurler in front of live batters soon, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Escobar, who was diagnosed with a shoulder tear in late March, threw 45 pitches Friday, which is the most he's thrown all season. He said his shoulder was feeling strong the day after his session in which he threw only fastballs and changeups. Escobar said he's "close" to a rehab assignment, and he doesn't mind if he comes back as either a reliever or a starter. If Escobar comes back as a reliever, there's a chance he could be back by the All-Star Game, which is July 15. If he prepares to be a starter, however, the process could take until late July or even longer. That's why Escobar wants to know what his role will be before he makes his rehab appearances. Manager Mike Scioscia felt a little different than Escobar, as the skipper said there's no reason why they shouldn't see how Escobar responds as a starter, which was his role last season when he won a career-high 18 games and had a 3.40 ERA in 32 starts.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 6/12, 9:51 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar, who is trying to rebound from a a torn labrum in his right shoulder, is scheduled to throw 45 pitches off the mound Friday, according to the LA Times. He said, "I threw 30 pitches Monday and there was no pain, no weakness. That's a lot of progress. I feel good."

Our View: He continues to make favorable progress, and the team believes he could be back before the All-Star break. The team would then decide whether to use him in the rotation or let him work out of the pen, depending on the team's needs at the time.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 6/10, 10:24 PM CT
The Angels believe Kelvim Escobar could be back with the club before the All-Star break, albeit not in his usual role. "I think if he's going to pitch in our bullpen, he could be back by then," manager Mike Scioscia explains to MLB.com. "If he's going to be a starter, you're talking about a longer process, like the end of July." Escobar has twice thrown off a mound, and the club is pleased with how his right shoulder has held up. Escobar has a tear in his labrum.

Our View: We remain skeptical about Escobar helping fantasy owners much this year. One need only look at John Smoltz for a cautionary tale. Still, this is excellent news for teams holding Escobar in a DL spot.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 6/9, 9:34 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar threw off a mound Monday for the second time this season and said his shoulder "continues to feel stronger," according to MLB.com. The righty tossed 30 fastballs at about 70-80 percent effort. "It was the first time I'd thrown those pitches off the mound in a long time," Escobar said. "It felt pretty good." Escobar is recovering from a tear in his labrum.

Our View: There is no timetable for Escobar's return, but it's a good sign that his shoulder feels good thus far. We'll let you know how he progresses.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 6/7, 9:06 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar threw off a mound for the first time since last season Friday afternoon, according to the LA Daily News. He is recovering from a torn right labrum, and is thinking about his role when he returns to the Angels. He stated, "I don't think I'll be a starter this year. I think they want to take it easier on my arm this year, make sure I get my health back and let me help the team in the bullpen. And you know, our starting rotation has been very good. Those guys have been very good."

Our View: Coach Mike Sciosca said he has also thought about it, but any discussion about his role is premature. Escobar won 18 games as a starter in 2007, with a 3.40 ERA and solid 1.27 WHIP. He is projected to return in July or August, and a lot can happen before then.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 6/3, 8:10 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar, who is recovering from a shoulder tear, has increased his intensity of flat- ground work, and could begin throwing off a mound early next week, according to the LA Times.

Our View: Escobar is projected to come back in July or August. He previously noted that he would be happy to start or serve out of the bullpen, depending on the Angels' needs at the time of his return.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 5/27, 8:26 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar is not thinking about surgery anymore to repair his torn right labrum, according to the LA Times. He once thought that his career may be over, but after visiting his team-mates for the first time since spring trainining, he commented, "I'm not even thinking about surgery anymore. In my mind, I'm preparing myself to come back." Escobar is throwing regularly but has yet to throw off a mound, and he said he did not anticipate he could return until after the All-Star break.

Our View: Manager Mike Scioscia said the Angels would stretch out his innings during workouts so the team would have the option to use him as a starter. Escobar would be happy to start or relieve depending on the Angels' needs when he returns in July or August.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 5/22, 10:38 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar has increased his long toss program to 120 feet, according to the LA Times. He is in Arizona rehabilitating from his shoulder tear.

Our View: There is a chance he could begin throwing off a mound by early June. The right-hander is scheduled to be evaluated next week in Anaheim.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 5/2, 1:27 PM CT
Manager Mike Scioscia has received an encouraging report from athletic trainer Ned Bergert on injured starter Kelvim Escobar. "He feels great -- that's the word I just got from Ned," Scioscia said in the LA Times. "Not that he's throwing his split-fingered fastball and slider at full bore, but he feels much different than he did when he started to throw [in mid-March]." Escobar is in the second week of his throwing program and is tossing from nearly 90 feet. He had been shut down in March after throwing just three times from 45 feet.

Our View: We still have our doubts that Escobar will amount to anything for fantasy owners this year, but this is a positive step for him.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 4/29, 10:13 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar had his best session in more than a month on Monday, according to the LA Times. He threw 60 feet without pain at the Angels' training camp in Tempe, Ariz, but Mike Scioscia commented, "These are baby steps. There's a long way to go. But he hasn't had any of the setbacks that shut him down last month." He is recovering from a torn right labrum.

Our View: He has a long way to go, but this is favorable news as he would need to undergo surgery if the rehab doesn't work.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 4/22, 10:23 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar will throw on Wednesday, his first such action since being diagnosed with a torn labrum in his right shoulder. "Escobar's going to throw tomorrow, start the progression," manager Mike Scioscia informs MLB.com. "It's very encouraging. He's definitely more upbeat."

Our View: If the rehab doesn't work, Escobar will need to undergo surgery. We're hoping for the best, but many people are expecting the worst.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 4/14, 9:33 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar does not appear to be close to returning, according to the LA Times. He was sent to the DL because of a tear in his shoulder in late March, is rehabbing in Arizona and could pick up a ball "By the end of this week," according to Manager Sciosca. He added, "That's the time frame we've been given, but it's in pencil." If Escobar feels pain after continuing his throwing program, he will likely undergo season-ending surgery.

Our View: This is unfavorable news for Escobar, who notably went 18-7 in 2007.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 4/9, 11:51 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar will be strength-tested in the next day or two, and Manager Sciosca noted, "With the possibility of resuming his throwing program in 10 days." This according to MLB.com. If he needs surgery on his injured shoulder, his season would likely be over. He went 18-7 in 2007 and he would be a key loss to the Angels' pitching staff.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 4/7, 10:12 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar has been performing strengthening exercises, but he remains "a couple weeks" away from throwing, manager Mike Scioscia tells the Los Angeles Times. The right-hander is trying to rehab a torn labrum.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 3/30, 8:45 AM CT
The Angels placed Kelvim Escobar on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 21, on Saturday. Escobar is out indefinitely and told the LA Times earlier in the week there is a chance he will need season ending surgery for a tear in his right shoulder. His fantasy status has plummeted and the right-hander should be ignored outside of deep leagues with deep reserve rosters.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 3/26, 2:36 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar revealed on Wednesday that he has a tear in his right shoulder and may need season-ending surgery. "I'm concerned, I don't know what's going to happen, I don't even know if I'll be able to pitch again," he tells the Los Angeles Times. Escobar will rehab the joint for another two weeks before visiting a specialist and considering an operation. These stories never seem to end well, and fantasy owners who already drafted Escobar for their leagues are in a bad spot. We can't expect Dustin Moseley or Nick Adenhart (whichever one makes the rotation) to pitch anywhere near as well as Escobar did in 2007.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 3/25, 4:46 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar has been shut down due to discomfort in his ailing shoulder, according to the LA Times. "When you're activating your arm, sometimes you have little glitches here and there," manager Mike Scioscia said. "He started to throw, felt a little discomfort, and now he's trying to get some of the inflammation back out of there. It's nothing unusual in a rehab scenario to have to take a step back." Escobar was just a week into a throwing program designed to build his shoulder strength back up, but this setback could keep him out until June. Realistically, his ongoing problems make him an incredible injury risk, despite his quality upside.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSunday 3/16, 7:45 AM CT
For the first time since January, Kelvim Escobar was able to play catch on Saturday, according to the LA Times. "I'm very pleased," said Escobar. "But at the same time, I have to be patient. I can't rush it. I'm going to do what they tell me to make sure I don't have a setback." He'll continue to stretch out his flat-ground sessions for a several weeks before stepping onto a mound. If all goes well in his recovery from a sore shoulder, Escobar could begin a rehab assignment by the middle of next month and join the Angels in May.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 3/15, 1:13 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar went through a strength test on his sore shoulder Friday and should begin throwing within a matter of days, according to the OC Register. Barring a setback, Escobar should be ready for his season debut within the first couple of weeks of May.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 3/1, 8:32 AM CT
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said that Kelvim Escobar is "still in the same window" to begin a throwing program in mid-to-late March, according to the LA Daily News. Even if he stays on course throughout his rehab from a sore shoulder, Escobar probably will not be ready for game action until May.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsSaturday 2/16, 10:32 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar isn't expected to throw a baseball until mid-March as he recovers from a sore right shoulder. "He'll be throwing a baseball sometime in the second, third week of March, playing catch. If there are no setbacks, hopefully we can get him going early in the season," manager Mike Scoscia tells MLB.com. We don't have a firm timetable for Escobar, but he won't be ready for the start of the season and this news strongly suggests he may not be ready to join the rotation until May. His fantasy stock is sliding quickly.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 2/14, 6:55 PM CT
Angels skipper Mike Scioscia told the team's official website that Kelvim Escobar is still experiencing the shoulder discomfort that caused him problems at the start and finish of what was a stellar 2007 season. "He's getting his treatments, doing his rehab," Scioscia said of Escobar, who was 18-7 with a 3.40 ERA despite September struggles (7.99 ERA). "It's still a matter of strengthening his shoulder. There is no timetable for Escobar's return to the mound, making him a draft day risk. The Venezuelan right-hander is expected to start the regular season on the disabled list.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsThursday 2/7, 8:52 AM CT
The shoulder discomfort that Kelvim Escobar experienced while throwing this offseason is expected to force the right-hander to begin the year on the DL. Escobar had inflammation in the shoulder late in September that caused him to miss a start, and it flared up over the winter. An MRI showed no significant changes in the shoulder from last fall, but manager Mike Scioscia acknowledged that the rehab program the team has mapped out won't have Escobar ready by the season opener. "It's doubtful he'll be ready for the start of the season, but if the strength comes back in the shoulder, he has a good chance to be very strong early in the year and come back and do what he did last year," Scioscia said in the LA Times. "You can't rush it. There is some weakness in some areas that need to be strengthened, and once they are, [the Angels' medical staff] will feel more comfortable with him throwing."
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsWednesday 2/6, 9:00 PM CT
Kelvim Escobar is rehabbing his throwing shoulder in Tempe, Arizona after experiencing discomfort during his preparations for the upcoming season, according to the AP. Escobar underwent an MRI performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum that showed no significant changes in the shoulder. Even so, the Angels are progressing cautiously. Seeing that he's one of the top starters in the American League, this is something that shouldn't be glossed over. Pay close attention to Escobar this spring.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsFriday 9/28, 12:09 PM CT
If Kelvim Escobar, who had his last start pushed back due to shoulder inflammation, suffers a setback during his start on Saturday, Bartolo Colon will replace him in the postseason rotation, according to the LA Times. That said, if the Angels are even letting Escobar start on Saturday, they have to believe that he's in pretty good shape, so perhaps the team is just preparing for the worst-case scenario.
Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 9/25, 11:49 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar was originally slated to start tonight against Texas, but he will instead have his next start pushed back to Saturday, according to the LA Times. "I think this is the smartest thing to do for me and for the team," said Escobar. "The thing is, if I was pitching [today] I don't know when I would pitch again because we don't know when the playoffs will start. I don't know if taking a long break is going to [help]." Escobar was scratched from his last start due to shoulder inflammation, and the Angels want to make sure he's fully ready for the playoffs.

Kelvim Escobar, P, Los Angeles AngelsTuesday 4/24, 9:27 AM CT
Kelvim Escobar, who will be activated from the disabled list today to start against the Tigers, didn't think a DL stint was necessary for his shoulder injury, according to the LA Times. "I don't think there was any need for the DL," said Escobar, who will be activated to start today against the Detroit Tigers. "I don't like to be on the DL, man — it's not good for you. For some reason, here, they don't wait to put you on the DL. I understand it's early April, and they want me to rest and make sure it's nothing serious. But I know myself, I know my arm better than anybody, and I knew it was a one-start thing. But I guess they do things different here. Next time, I won't say anything, because I don't want to go on the DL."

Kelvim Escobar was held out of drills Friday due to patella tendinitis in his left knee, according to the LA Times. It's the same problem that dogged him last season and failed to subside during the offseason. Escobar has all but cut out running to decrease the stress on his knee. "The good thing is I can throw — the only time it bothers me is when I'm running," said Escobar, who threw from a mound Wednesday. "If it was something that could be cleaned up with surgery, I'd do it, because I love to run, and it takes away a lot of things I like to do in spring training. I hope it gets better. I don't want to be dealing with this all year. It's a pain."

He has recently been activated from the DL because of irritation problems in his elbow. "There might be some scar tissue from last year [surgery to remove a bone spur]," said Escobar. It is something I'm going to have deal with until it goes away. I don't know how long it will take. When it breaks down, I guess there will be a lot less soreness.
