As the Pirates continue to debate their needs and formation of the major league roster, the pitching group remains in flux, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. As a result, Jaret Wright , attempting to earn a job in the bullpen, was asked and agreed to extend his escape-clause deadline to Thursday. Wright had to be placed on the 25-man roster by yesterday or he could become a free agent without the extension. "They asked me to move (the deadline)," Wright said. "What else was I going to do? It'd be nice to know sooner, but they said they wouldn't know for sure today." Meanwhile, Elmer Dessens and Casey Fossum, fellow bullpen candidates, were assigned to minor league camp.

However, the Orioles weren't under the same impression, according to the Baltimore Sun. "Our thought process was we would see him again at some point this year," O's VP Jim Duquette said. "We weren't thinking this injury was season-ending. That's not what was relayed to us by the doctors." At some point, Wright's expected to return to Baltimore to check in with the club, at which point the O's might have an update. For now, Wright remains out indefinitely due to his shoulder injury.

The Baltimore Sun reports that Jaret Wright was desponded after leaving last night's game with shoulder stiffness, acknowledging the pain is consistent with what he's felt in the past; Wright has undergone two shoulder surgeries before on the joint. "It's not something you want to have happen," he said. "I think I'm smart enough now and I've dealt with enough. I know if I kept going that I could probably really hurt it. So now I just wanted to give myself a chance to let the doctors work on it, and [head trainer Richie Bancells] and those guys to see what we can do. If it was routine, then I still would be out there throwing. It kept getting tighter. I just didn't want to keep pushing it like that." More should be known about his status after he's re-evaluated today. If Wright is sidelined for a while, top prospect Hayden Penn likely would join the rotation.
