Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 12/3, 2:56 PM CT
As expected, Placido Polanco has signed a three-year, $18 million contract to play third base for the Phillies, according to the Detroit Free Press. The sides hold a mutual option for a fourth year.

Our View: The deal is a somewhat risky one for the Phillies, as Polanco, age 34, has seen both his on-base percentage and slugging percentage take steep declines each of the past two seasons. He can still rake, as evidenced by his 354 hits the past two years, but could really be beginning to slow down. Regardless, he is a big offensive upgrade over Pedro Feliz.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 12/3, 9:08 AM CT
Updating an earlier item, Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated reports that Placido Polanco is likely to sign a three-year, $18 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday.

Our View: He will be their third baseman. Polanco was with the Phillies from 2002-2005, hitting above .290 during his time there. While a defensive downgrade at the hot corner from Pedro Feliz, he is a tremendous offensive upgrade, and should make the already potent Philadelphia lineup even more dangerous.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 12/3, 8:16 AM CT
The Philadelphia Phillies are believed to be close to making Placido Polanco their next third baseman, according to Fox Sports.

Our View: While not the defensive dynamo Pedro Feliz is, Polanco has a much bigger bat, and his 354 hits from the past two seasons would fit in quite nicely in Philadelphia's explosive lineup. If he does sign, the deal is believed to worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $10-12 million (total) over two seasons.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 12/2, 6:46 PM CT
According to MLB.com, the Red Sox have shown interest in second baseman Placido Polanco.

Our View: Polanco is a free agent and wasn't offered arbitration by the Tigers, so he wouldn't cost the Sox anything but a contract. They would have to shift Dustin Pedroia from second to shortstop, as Polanco is the superior defender at the position, but the former MVP is open to the idea. Boston has also shown interest in shortstop Marco Scutaro, who is a Type A free agent.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 12/2, 9:55 AM CT
The Phillies remain interested in Placido Polanco, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View: The Tigers did not offer Polanco salary arbitration, and the Phillies would consider employing his as their No. 1 third baseman. The 34-year-old vet previously served time with Philadelphia before heading to Detroit in 2005.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 12/1, 1:15 PM CT
Placido Polanco has not been offered salary arbitration by the Detroit Tigers, according to Jason Beck of MLB.com.

Our View: If it wasn't already before, it's official now: Polanco will not be back in Detroit next season. Despite being age 34, his skills with the bat should have him in plenty of demand this winter.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 11/28, 4:49 PM CT
The Detroit News believes the Tigers will offer arbitration to Placido Polanco.

Our View: Polanco is an aging vet at 34, and would cost the Tigers around $6MM to retain for 2010. The club is also believed to be high on second baseman Scott Sizemore, making it seem less likely he will be offered arbitration.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 11/12, 12:33 PM CT
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Phillies are interested in making Placido Polanco their everyday third baseman.

Our View: Polanco, who won a Gold Glove this season at second base, says that he will move to the hot corner as long as he gets to play for a contender. The problem is he hasn't played there since 2005. Still, the Phillies think the move will work and feel that a reunion with the 34-year-old Polanco would be promising. Adrian Beltre and Mark DeRosa are also on the team's radar.

Our View: Polanco is hitting .268 this season, which is a bit low for him, but he is still a professional hitter who can make pitchers pay on mistakes. He isn't quite the fantasy player he used to be, but he is still a solid infielder in most leagues.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 7/4, 12:43 AM CT
Placido Polanco went 3-for-8 with two runs scored and three RBI in the Tigers' 11-9, 16-inning win over the Twins on Friday.

Our View: Polanco, normally a hit machine, hasn't hit over .267 in any month this season. He should be limited to very deep leagues, as his .259 average and five home runs won't translate well anywhere else.

Placido Polanco went 4-for-4 in Friday's 3-1 win at Pittsburgh. He had two doubles and two singles.

Our View: Polanco has been disappointing so far this season, and he is hitting only .252 on the year so far. There is still talent there, but Polanco seems to be past his prime. His fantasy value has taken a big hit, but he may still be serviceable in AL-only leagues.

Placido Polanco ignited the Tigers' offense on Wednesday as they beat the Royals 8-3. Polanco went 3-for-5 with a home run, a run, and three RBI.

Our View: Polanco is hitting .269 on the season, which is a bit low for him. He has never been a big power guy, but he is a good hitter who can contribute runs and some RBIs.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 4/27, 8:45 PM CT
Placido Polanco was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI as the Tigers beat the Yankees 4-2 on Monday.

Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 4/15, 3:56 PM CT
Placido Polanco had only one hit in Wednesday's game against the White Sox, but it was a big one. Polanco had a two-RBI double in the fifth to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. He finished with three RBI on the day.

Placido Polanco saw the ball well on Sunday, going 1-for-2 with a double while drawing a pair of walks. He also started a double play on defense.

Our View: Polanco had a bit of a down year in 2008 for average, batting .307 just a year after batting .341. He's still a useful player in fantasy, however, especially in AL-only leagues.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 2/23, 10:06 AM CT
Placido Polanco is using a smaller glove in spring training to ensure that he stays down on grounders, according to the Detroit News.

Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 9/4, 2:47 PM CT
Even if the Tigers don't score much, second baseman Placido Polanco usually finds a way to deliver some hits, which is what happened in the Detroit's 7-1 loss to the Angels. Polanco went 2-for-4 on the day.

Our View: Polanco has at least one hit in 13 of his team's last 16 games. After a slow start, his average has not been below .300 since early June.

Our View: Polanco was diagnosed with patella tendinitis, and was out of the lineup, replaced by at second base by Ramon Santiago. Manager Jim Leyland had already slated Polanco to rest on Wednesday, ahead of Thursday's off-day, and that plan remained intact. Polanco's knee was already feeling somewhat better on Wednesday, though it was still sore. Santiago filled in for Polanco again on Wednesday, batting second in the order after his two-hit game Tuesday night.

Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 8/9, 10:29 PM CT
The Oakland A's put up 10 hits on the night but failed to turn the bulk of them into runs, falling 10-2 to Detroit. That left Detroit second baseman Placido Polanco to serve as the voice of reason, going 3-for-4 at the plate with his 28th double of the season as well as his fifth stolen base to finish with one run scored.

Our View: Polanco has improved over disappointing returns last month, hitting just .274 with one home run and nine RBIs through July, to stroke an average of .323 with two homers and five RBIs through the early battles of August.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 8/6, 12:17 AM CT
Placido Polanco got the Tigers off to a good start with a two-run homer in the first inning, and he added a second two-run shot in the 14th frame. However, his efforts against the White Sox on Tuesday night fell short thanks to a shoddy Tigers bullpen. Polanco also hit a triple over his six at-bats.

Our View: Polanco often doesn't hit two home runs in a month, so it's obviously surprising to see him smack two in one game. Fantasy owners count on the second baseman for his batting average and runs. Count Tuesday as a bonus.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 7/30, 11:47 PM CT
It took 41 combined hits and 13 innings to get the job done, but the Detroit Tigers managed to upset the Indians in Cleveland, 14-12. Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 7/23, 4:24 PM CT
Placido Polanco went 3-for-5 with two runs scored to push his average up to .312 on the year.

Our View: Polanco has three hits in three of the last four games during which time he is 9-for-21 (.429). He isn't much of an offensive threat other than the average and his runs scored total (52), but he is still a fine middle infield option in mixed leagues.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 7/23, 12:42 AM CT
The Tigers found five players to post one RBI each this evening, pulling the 7-1 win over Kansas City. The man of the hour had to be second baseman Placido Polanco , going 2-for-5 with his 21st double and fourth homer of the season to total two RBIs and two runs scored on the night.

Our View: Polanco has fallen a bit, hitting .386 through June to slip to .246 through July. He's never been a huge run producer, but his five RBIs thus far this month is still disappointing.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 7/9, 10:50 PM CT
Placido Polanco didn't start after being sworn in as a U.S. citizen before the game, this according to the AP. The native of the Dominican Republic entered in the seventh inning after Edgar Renteria strained a hamstring running out a ground ball.

Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 6/10, 9:03 PM CT
Placido Polanco's pursuit of the .300 mark is nearly complete. The second baseman went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs on Tuesday and is up to .297. Polanco was sitting at .140 on April 24, but he has hit .354 over his last 40 games.

Our View: Polanco's fantasy value rests almost entirely on his batting average, and he's quietly been great since his atrocious start.

Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 5/7, 11:10 PM CT
Placido Polanco slapped five hits all over the yard for the Tigers on his way to two runs and three RBI.

Our View: Polanco, who was batting .174 has raised his average to .270 in the past nine games, eight of which he has recorded a hit in. Career .304 hitters don't struggle forever you know.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 5/4, 5:05 PM CT
Placido Polanco went 2-for-4 with a double and a run against the Twins on Sunday. He is 16-for-42 (.381) over the last nine games.

Our View: A nagging back ailment crushed Polanco's fantasy value throughout most of April, but the veteran has found his old groove. He's useful as a middle infielder in mixed leagues.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 5/4, 10:27 AM CT
Placido Polanco's back ailment has subsided and he is playing without pain (for the first time since spring training), according to MLB.com. He said, "It's good. It's the best that I've felt in a while, including spring training. Without a doubt. The way I'm moving, right, left, running, mood-wise, everything is better."

Our View: He has missed five games with the ailment, but since returning to action a week and a half ago, he's batting 14-for-38 through Saturday with four doubles, two home runs, nine runs scored and five RBI. Saturday also marked his ninth consecutive start since returning. His fantasy stock is back on the rise, and is worth targeting now if you can lure him away for a low price.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 5/2, 11:40 AM CT
Placido Polanco could get a night off tonight when the Tigers travel to Minnesota, according to MLB.com. The second baseman is hitting .407 over the past week.

Our View: Polanco owners don't want their infielder sitting right now while he's red-hot, but those in daily transaction leagues might be well served in sitting him tonight just in case.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 4/30, 10:40 PM CT
Placido Polanco had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored from the two hole for the Tigers on Wednesday night.

Our View: Polanco now has six hits in his last two games since returning to the lineup as his average has gone up .054 points in the two games to .228. A consistent .300 hitter, look for the hits to keep coming from the Tigers second baseman.

Placido Polanco wrapped four base hits in Tuesday's game, his third multi-hit game in the last four times out.

Placido Polanco could be back in the lineup on Wednesday. He has an inflamed nerve in his lower back, the Detroit News reports. Ryan Raburn has been filling in at second, but Ramon Santiago will get the call on Tuesday.

Our View: Fantasy owners may want to wait until the weekend to use Polanco. This injury has caused him to be in and out of the lineup, and it wouldn't hurt to see if he can actually play a couple games without aggravating it.
Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 4/21, 12:13 PM CT
Placido Polanco received some good news on Monday. An MRI taken Sunday showed no structural damage in his lower back, and he has begun taking medication, MLive.com reports. Polanco has been out since Friday and been dealing with this back issue for a few weeks.

Placido Polanco, 3B, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 4/21, 10:42 AM CT
Placido Polanco is not listed in Monday's lineup against the Blue Jays. He has been dealing with a sore lower back, and there's speculation that he could end up on the disabled list. Ryan Raburn is starting in his place.

Our View: Raburn may be worth adding in AL-only leagues, if he's still available. Polanco has been dealing with this issue for weeks and clearly isn't improving enough.

Detroit 2B Placido Polanco returned from injury and helped his Tigers to an 8-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night, but the hampered infielder is expected to be out of the lineup when the teams meet up again on Saturday, according to CBSSports.com.

Placido Polanco, out of the lineup on Thursday to rest a sore left hip flexor, is back in the lineup on Friday night, this according to MLB.com. Though he will play tonight, the plan is for Polanco to be out of the lineup on Saturday to avoid allowing the condition to linger.

Our View: After hitting .408 in the spring Polanco has slumped to just .154 in 52 regular season at-bats, so the team hopes that some rest in the short-term will allow his body to heal so that he can return to the .300 hitter that he is.

Both Carlos Guillen and Placido Polanco will be missing from action today as the Detroit Tigers visit the Chicago White Sox today, according to MichiganLive.com. Guillen will miss his second day in a row with a right hamstring strain.

Our View: Manager Jim Leyland has also noted Gary Sheffield as a potential worry, nursing a sore right shoulder that seems to be progressing slowly due to the cold conditions this time of year offers. Stay tuned for further information regarding the veteran outfielder.
