Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 7/22, 8:33 AM CT
According to the LA Daily News, injured first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz is set to begin a rehab assignment next Tuesday.

Our View: Mientkiewicz is recovering from shoulder surgery and was expected to be out until at least September, but he has made incredible strides in his rehab. He will give the Dodger bench a boost upon his return as he is a defensive wizard, but his fantasy value is nonexistent.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 6/26, 10:03 AM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz could be back earlier than his expected September return date from shoulder surgery, according to MLB.com.

Our View: This is good news for the Dodgers bench, but irrelevant for fantasy owners. Mientkiewicz holds no value in any format.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 4/18, 8:04 AM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz has been placed on the 15-day DL with his dislocated right shoulder, according to TSN.

Our View: He will need surgery, and is expected to be on the shelf for three months. He won't be missed in fantasy leagues as a utility man.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 4/17, 6:57 PM CT
Infielder Doug Mientkiewicz will need surgery to repair his dislocated right shoulder, the Los Angeles Daily News reports. Team officials differ on his timeline for recovery, but he is expected to miss at least three months.

Our View: If backup infielders Mark Loretta and Blake DeWitt play well enough, the Dodgers will have no reason to rush Mientkiewicz back. It's safe for that one NL-only team out there that has Doug to drop him.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 4/17, 11:10 AM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz dislocated his right shoulder sliding into second base in Thursday's win over the Giants, according to the Associated Press. He is expected to have an MRI Friday.

Our View: Mientkiewicz only had five at-bats on the season, but he did have two RBI on the play in which he hurt himself. Expect him to miss some time, but he isn't a fantasy option either way.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 4/6, 7:29 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Doug Mientkiewicz had his contract purchased by the Dodgers on Monday. He was a non-roster invitee to their spring training.

Our View: The first baseman does not figure to see many starts this season as James Loney is an excellent first baseman. He may see some late-inning pinch-hitting duties, but he does not hold any fantasy value.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 3/6, 10:24 PM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz collected a pair of RBI on a home run in the Dodgers' 5-4 win over the Cubs on Friday.

Our View: Mientkiewicz figures to be used frequently as the Dodgers' versatile utility man, as he is capable of playing first, third, and possibly some outfield.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 2/26, 10:41 AM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz has reportedly agreed to terms on a deal with the Dodgers, according to the LA Daily News. It is believed to be a minor league deal.

Our View: The veteran would provide a solid bat off the bench, but his fantasy value would be limited. He could hold the role Nomar Garciaparra did last season.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 1/12, 6:12 PM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz has said that it's unlikely that he'll return to the Pirates next season, according to MLB.com.

Our View: With the slow free agent market, players like Mientkiewicz have been hurt the most. He's primarily a bench player and with players capable of providing a major impact like Manny Ramirez and Adam Dunn still on the market, an offer may not be on the table for him any time soon.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersTuesday 12/23, 7:16 AM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz is still on the Pirates' radar, but they are yet to make him an offer, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: The Pirates has drawn their attention away from Ty Wigginton as he does not want to return to Pittsburgh which might open the door for Doug to return. Mientkiewicz can hit for a solid average, but holds most of his value as a leader in the clubhouse.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 11/9, 1:53 PM CT
The Pirates are interested in bringing back Doug Mientkiewicz according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View: Mientkiewicz hit for a decent average in 2008, batting .277. However, he had almost no power cranking just two home runs with 30 RBI.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 8/22, 2:39 PM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz has returned to the Pirates, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He has been on the bereavement list to be with his wife, who recently had heart surgery.

Our View: Mientkiewicz has been hitting well, but only holds fantasy value in deeper NL-only leagues, as he is forced to share time at the corner infield spots with the LaRoche's.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 8/18, 3:08 PM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz has been placed on the bereavement list by the Pirates after his wife underwent heart surgery at Allegheny General Hospital today, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Nyjer Morgan will be recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to fill his spot on the roster.

Our View: We wish him well while he is away to attend to his wife.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 8/11, 7:26 PM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz had three hits on Monday while knocking in two runs for the Pirates.

Our View: Mientkiewicz is currently batting .293 which would be his best mark since hitting .300 in 2003. Doug continues to do just enough to warrant attention in NL-only leagues despite the fact that he has only two home runs on the year.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 7/23, 5:19 PM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz had a big day at the plate on Wednesday with a single and three doubles on his way to a 4-for-4 performance for the Pirates.

Our View: Mientkiewicz is hitting only .274 with a single home run in 164 AB, but he qualifies at first base and third base giving him value as a depth play in NL only leagues.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 6/20, 11:22 PM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz knocked out three hits for the Pirates on Friday night to end the evening hitting a robust .250.

Our View: OK, that isn't exactly a robust average, but we had to do something to spice up what was a terrible offensive night for the Pirates though they did manage to score the lone run in a 12-inning 1-0 victory over the Jays.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 5/24, 11:52 AM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz is the new starting third baseman for the Pirates, according to a report in the Allegheny Times. The team hasn't come out and said that Jose Bautista will be benched in favor of the former first baseman, but Doug has started seven of the last eight games at the hot corner.

Our View: Bautista is just 3-for-25 (.120) in his last 11 appearances, and the team needs an injection of offense right now. We all know Mientkiewicz, besides having an extremely difficult name to spell, is a terrific fielder, and he has seemlessly made the move across the diamond.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 5/22, 12:03 AM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz started at third base Wednesday for the fifth time in the last six games. Jose Bautista, who is in a 3-for-21 slump, was on the bench again. "What we've done since Day One is put the lineup out there that we feel gives us the best chance to win that night," manager John Russell said in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "(Mientkiewicz's) swing is more conducive to getting more at-bats."

Our View: It's not as if Doug has set the world on fire, but apparently Russell feels he's a better option than Bautista. Neither player has much fantasy value.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 5/17, 1:17 PM CT
Manager John Russell has started Doug Mientkiewicz at third base for the third straight game today, but insists that there is not a platoon at the position with Jose Bautista, according to MLB.com. While downplaying the lefty-righty platoon possibility, Russell said that his choice to start the left-handed-hitting Mientkiewicz again on Saturday was designed more to give Bautista a few extra days to focus on his approach at the plate and his swing. Russell added, "Jose has been working awfully hard and got into a little bit of a rut. I don't know if you can say it's a platoon. We're just trying to get Jose back on track. He's played good defense for us, but with his bat, sometimes it's good to take a couple of days and get it straightened out a little bit."

Our View: He has some value in NL-only leagues, but not much. He is only hitting .238 over 62 at-bats, with one homer and seven RBI.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 5/16, 4:28 PM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz played his ninth game at third base on Friday and used the chance to hit his first home runs of the season.

Our View: Doug now has four hits in his last four AB and is one game from his 10th outing at the hot corner, which will give him added value in NL Only leagues, not much, but a little.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 4/12, 8:00 PM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz made his first career start at third base on Saturday replacing the struggling Jose Bautista, this according to MLB.com.

Our View: Doug can pick it, there is no doubt there, and given the fact that Batista is hitting just .179 on the year, why the heck not allow the Gold Glove first baseman to start at third base?
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 3/26, 9:28 AM CT
The Pirates purchased the contract of Doug Mientkiewicz on Wednesday and added him to the 40-man roster, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Mientkiewicz has played multiple positions this spring, including first base, second base, third base, and outfield. He will kept around as a backup option.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 2/18, 2:44 PM CT
The addition of Doug Mientkiewicz to the Pirates roster could limit Ray Olmedo's chances to make the team this spring. Olmedo arrived to camp today with the intention of battling for for the backup middle infielder's slot against Josh Wilson. The Post Gazette reports that Chris Gomez, a lock to make the team, could be that player to fill the middle infield utility role, but that will depend on whether Mientkiewicz can demonstrate the ability to play second and third base. The newest addition to the Pirates took grounders at second yesterday and is an option at first base and the outfield.

Our View:
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 2/17, 11:21 AM CT
The Pirates are trying out Doug Mientkiewicz at third base and the corner outfield spots this spring, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. That's bad news for his chances of making the squad.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 2/11, 3:38 PM CT
The Pirates signed Doug Mientkiewicz to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training Monday, according to the AP. Mientkiewicz spent the 2007 season with the Yankees, hitting .277 with five home runs and 24 runs batted in during 72 games. He's more known for his glove than his bat at this point, which might make him a nice late-inning defensive replacement from time to time but nobody you want near your fantasy roster.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 10/5, 10:11 AM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz was nearly scratched from Game 1 against Cleveland on Thursday after a cameraman stumbled and fell on the first baseman, causing him to roll his ankle, according to Newsday. "I was walking up the ramp," Mientkiewicz said, "and he was backpedaling and filming, and he tripped and fell onto me." Mientkiewicz was removed from the game in the fifth inning for a pinch-hitter, although it's unclear if his early removal was related to the ankle injury.
Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 10/3, 12:00 AM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz could start the majority of postseason games for the Yankees on the strength of his defense, the AP reports. This means Jason Giambi will likely be a situational DH and pinch-hitter for New York.

Doug Mientkiewicz will be placed on the 15-day disabled list before the game Sunday, a day after colliding with Boston's Mike Lowell on an errant throw by shortstop Derek Jeter, the AP reports. Mientkiewicz was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where tests Saturday night revealed a mild concussion, cervical sprain and a fractured bone in his right wrist. He spent the night in the hospital for observation. Josh Phelps could get a bump up in playing time with Mientkiewicz out, though Andy Phillips will likely get recalled from Triple-A and be in the mix.
