Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 10/8, 2:11 PM CT
Julio Lugo will play second base and hit leadoff for the Cardinals in their Game 2 match-up against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers in LA.

Our View: Lugo will play in place of Skip Schumaker, who normally sits against lefties. Lugo isn't the prototypical leadoff hitter, so it will be interesting to see how he handles the duty today.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 10/8, 8:47 AM CT
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that Julio Lugo will likely get the start for the Cardinals in Thursday's Game 2 against the Dodgers. Lugo will likely play second base if he is in the lineup.

Our View: Tony La Russa decided to go with Skip Schumaker last night against the lefty Randy Wolf, but Lugo has been playing in most games in which the Birds are facing a southpaw. If Lugo is in the lineup tonight, don't be shocked to see Schumaker return to center field, taking the place of rookie Colby Rasmus.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 9/3, 4:45 PM CT
Julio Lugo went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, a run scored, and an RBI in the Cardinals' 4-3 loss to the Brewers on Thursday.

Our View: Lugo has been reborn in St. Louis this summer, and after being cast aside by the Red Sox, Lugo looks like he will contribute for the rest of the season in the Cards' lineup. If you are in desperate need of a middle infielder, it might be worth it to give Lugo a look, but be aware that he does split time with Brendan Ryan and Skip Schumaker.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 7/25, 7:31 PM CT
Julio Lugo had a big day at the plate on Saturday. The new Cardinal shortstop went 4-for-5 with an RBI and was a homer short of the cycle in the Cardinals' embarrassing 14-6 loss to the Phillies.

Our View: Lugo is now 6-for-10 in his brief two-game Cardinal career and the Redbirds appeared to have caught lightning in a bottle with the former Red Sock. If he continues to hit like this count on Tony LaRussa finding a way to keep his bat in the lineup.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 7/23, 6:28 PM CT
Julio Lugo has been activated by the Cardinals after being acquired via trade from Boston, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Lugo is worth a look as a flier for NL-only leagues, namely if he sees regular action at shortstop. The 33-year-old vet is a career .271 hitter.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 7/22, 4:43 PM CT
Less than a week after designating him for assignment, Boston has traded shortstop Julio Lugo to the St. Louis Cardinals for outfielder Chris Duncan, according to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Duncan is mired in an epic slump, going just just 1-for-31 this month, but was a classic candidate to benefit from a change of scenery. A highly defensively challenged player, he profiles much better as an American Leaguer. Though with Big Papi entrenched as the Sox DH, he should struggle for at-bats. Lugo meanwhile, also benefits greatly from the deal, as the Cardinals badly needed a major league ready infielder. He figures to see lots of playing time, and at many different positions, under Tony La Russa.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 7/21, 12:55 PM CT
Alex Speier is reporting on WEEI.com that Julio Lugo is not necessarily going to be signed by the Mets when he is released. The Mets had several opportunities to land Lugo in a trade for next to nothing, but they passed. Now, they have Jose Reyes coming back soon to play shortstop.

Our View: The Mets may still sign Lugo, but Speier believes it is not a foregone conclusion like many think. Lugo could provide depth in case Reyes gets delayed in his return again, but he doesn't figure to make a big impact anywhere this season.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 7/18, 10:38 AM CT
Julio Lugo is reportedly already working out at the Mets' training complex in the Dominican Republic, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: This a is a little bit puzzling, considering Jose Reyes is due back relatively soon and Alex Cora has performed well in his absence. But Lugo certainly couldn't hurt a team short on major league talent right now. Stay tuned.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 7/17, 11:34 AM CT
According to WEEI.com, the Red Sox have designated shortstop Julio Lugo for assignment.

Our View: This move shouldn't surprise anyone. Lugo was a financial drain, failed to stay healthy and couldn't get anything significant going at the plate this season. He's currently in the third year of a four-year deal that pays him $10 million per season. The Sox will have ten days to assign him to another club (major or minor league) and can go the trade route or put him through waivers.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 7/16, 10:56 PM CT
Julio Lugo did not travel with the Red Sox to Toronto, according to MLB.com.

Our View: This is further evidence that his time with the Sox could be coming to an end soon. Jed Lowrie is expected to be activated this weekend, and Lugo looks to be the odd-man-out on the roster. Mike Lowell could return Friday as well. Leg ailments have compromised his range defensively.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 7/16, 12:39 PM CT
FoxSports.com is reporting that the Red Sox are "desperately" trying to trade infielder Julio Lugo. With Jed Lowrie set to return over the weekend, the Sox have no place for Lugo on their roster.

Our View: The Sox would move him for a bag of balls and a few bats if they could, but it seems unlikely anyone will be willing to take on his contract for this season and next. The Sox are going to have to make a decision soon, so we will keep you updated on Lugo's status.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 7/1, 5:00 PM CT
The beleaguered Julio Lugo drove in the game winning run in the 11th inning on Wednesday, as the Red Sox beat the Orioles 6-5 in Baltimore.

Our View: Rumors have abounded that Lugo will be released once Jed Lowrie returns, but the veteran shortstop is still having a decent '09 campaign, batting .301 in 103 at-bats. He is still not a viable fantasy option, though.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 6/29, 2:43 PM CT
The Boston Globe is reporting that the Red Sox may release infielder Julio Lugo when the injured Jed Lowrie returns from the DL. Lugo has played only sparingly in the last two weeks, as Nick Green has been seeing a bulk of the time at shortstop.

Our View: Lugo isn't happy sitting the bench, and the Sox will have plenty of other options in Green and Lowrie after the All-Star break. Expect Lugo to be released, but he should manage to catch on somewhere else.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 6/2, 6:36 PM CT
Julio Lugo is out of the lineup for the third straight game Tuesday, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Nick Green is starting at shortstop in his place. Julio Lugo has not been performing well defensively, and skipper Terry Francona likes Green's range. Francona added that Lugo will play, and needs to be patient.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 5/23, 3:32 PM CT
Julio Lugo is out of Saturday's lineup against the Mets, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Lugo has been nursing a sore groin, but may be riding the pine as he failed to turn a key double-play in Friday's loss 5-3 loss to the Mets. Nick Green will cover shortstop in his place tonight.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 5/17, 9:44 PM CT
Julio Lugo missed Sunday's loss to Seattle due to a sore groin, but the infielder said that he does not consider the injury serious, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: Lugo needs periodic rest anyways, as he is still recovering from spring knee surgery. With Nick Green's defense deteriorating, Lugo may find even more regular starts coming his way. If he does, he could be a serviceable shortstop in AL-only formats as he hits in a devastating lineup and currently carries a .333 average.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 5/17, 9:09 AM CT
Julio Lugo exited Saturday's game in the seventh inning with a hip flexor/groin ailment, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Lugo will be re-evaluated this morning. He said the pain is a six on a scale of 10, and may be held out Sunday with an off-day Monday.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 5/7, 9:12 PM CT
Julio Lugo filled in at DH and hit leadoff for the Red Sox in their 13-3 win over Cleveland. He went 3-for-5 with a triple and three runs scored.

Our View: Lugo is anything but an everyday player at this point, but manager Terry Francona may elect to keep his bat in the lineup as he has hits in his last two games. If he was an everyday player, he would be a fine AL-only option.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 5/7, 3:17 PM CT
Julio Lugo will start at shortstop tonight against the Indians at Fenway Park, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: He will bat leadoff with Jacoby Ellsbury out with a tight hamstring. Lugo is a career .278 hitter against Cleveland with six homers over 151 at-bats. He is worth employing in AL-only leagues.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 5/2, 5:15 PM CT
Julio Lugo is not in tonight's lineup at Tampa Bay, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View: Lugo recently returned from the DL following knee surgery, and manager Terry Francona is giving him a rest tonight. Nick Green will cover shortstop in his place.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 5/1, 8:28 AM CT
Julio Lugo was back in the lineup Thursday after not starting Wednesday's game, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Lugo is yet to attempt to steal a base, but has two hits over six at-bats so far. He also drew two walks. He is worth consideration in AL-only leagues.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 4/29, 2:59 PM CT
Shortstop Julio Lugo (knee) is out of the lineup again on Wednesday. His right knee tightened up in the cool weather on Tuesday night. Nick Green will start in his place, the Boston Globe confirms.

Our View: With Jed Lowrie out, Lugo pushed quickly to return from surgery, and it's not surprising to find that he is less than 100 percent. Fantasy owners should expect Lugo and Green to share time until Julio gets in a few more games.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 4/28, 8:19 AM CT
Manager Terry Francona commented on Julio Lugo after activating the shortstop from the DL following his recovery from knee surgery, according to the Boston Globe. Nick Green started at shortstop Monday and Francona said, "I think Lugo feels pretty good about himself. I think he is still kind of working on strength, even though it is doing good. A lot of it is going to have to be on how he feels."

Our View: Lugo is a career .271 hitter and could be a decent source for speed and power in AL-only leagues. He should get the bulk of the starts at shortstop until Jed Lowrie returns following his recovery from wrist surgery.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 4/27, 2:56 PM CT
As expected, Julio Lugo has been activated from the 15-day DL following his recovery from knee surgery, according to the Providence Journal. Michael Bowden will be sent back down to Pawtucket as the adjoining move.

Our View: Lugo is expected to be active for tonight's game at Cleveland. He will be the starting shortstop with Jed Lowrie on the shelf following wrist surgery, but Nick Green will start at shortstop tonight. Lugo is worth a look for AL-only leagues. He hit .268 with one homer and 12 stolen bases over 261 at-bats with Boston in 2008.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 4/27, 8:34 AM CT
Julio Lugo (knee surgery) went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored with Triple-A Pawtucket in Sunday's 7-4 win against Lehigh Valley, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: That was the last outing of his rehab stint, and he is expected to be activated from the DL today. He should be in the starting lineup at shortstop for tonight's game at Cleveland, and is worth consideration for AL-only leagues.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 4/24, 4:18 PM CT
The Boston Globe is reporting that Julio Lugo will return to the team Monday after he finishes his rehab stint in Triple-A Pawtucket this weekend.

Our View: Lugo should assume the starting shortstop job fairly quickly after he returns, but coach Terry Francona said they would not activate him if he struggles this weekend. Watch to make sure he doesn't have any setbacks, but the likely bet is that he will be back Monday.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 4/23, 7:57 AM CT
Julio Lugo (knee surgery) fared fine in his first rehab game with Triple-A Pawtucket, according to the Boston Globe. He struck out in his first three at-bats, but fielded all four chances at shortstops cleanly.

Our View: Skipper Terry Francona feels that Lugo may be ready to return to Boston next week when the club plays Cleveland. Lugo should start at shortstop with Jed Lowrie out of action while recovering from wrist surgery.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 4/22, 12:22 PM CT
Julio Lugo is set to start his rehab assignment today with Triple-A Pawtucket, according to the Boston Herald. He is recovering from knee surgery.

Our View: Lugo is nearing his return to Boston, and manager Terry Francona thinks there is a chance he could rejoin the club next week when the Sox battle the Indians. Lugo should start at shortstop with Jed Lowrie on the shelf following wrist surgery.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 4/20, 9:30 AM CT
The Boston Globe is reporting that Julio Lugo will be joining the Pawtucket Red Sox on Tuesday to begin his rehab assignment. Manager Terry Francona said it is still unclear when Lugo will make his season debut in Boston.

Our View: Francona wants Lugo to go through a normal progression of building up innings in the field before he joins the Sox. With Jed Lowrie's wrist injury, Lugo should supplant current starter Nick Green at the shortstop position when he returns.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 4/18, 8:10 AM CT
Julio Lugo played three innings in an extended spring training game Friday, according to the Boston Globe. He is recovering from a knee injury.

Our View: Lugo could begin a rehab assignment soon, and may be ready to return to Boston by the end of next week. He will start at shortstop with Jed Lowrie potentially done for the season with his wrist injury, making him worth acquiring in any league.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 4/14, 9:57 PM CT
According to the Providence Journal, Julio Lugo will resume baseball activities on Wednesday in extended spring training. He is recovering from a quad injury.

Our View: He is scheduled to head to Triple-A for a rehab stint next Tuesday barring any setbacks and would join the Red Sox shortly after where his starting job will be waiting for him.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 4/7, 8:09 AM CT
Julio Lugo will head to Fort Myers, Florida, Thursday to participate in around one week of extended spring training, according to the Boston Globe. He is rehabbing from March arthroscopic knee surgery.

Our View: He will be evaluated after a week, and he needs to regain the strength in his quad before he starts trying to play in games. He could be back with the Sox before the end of April.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 4/4, 2:12 PM CT
Julio Lugo has been placed on the 15-day DL by the Red Sox, according to SLAM Sports. He is recovering from March arthroscopic knee surgery.

Our View: Lugo is aiming to be back in mid-April, and will push Jed Lowrie for starts at shortstop if healthy.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 4/4, 11:16 AM CT
Julio Lugo will probably be close to ready for a rehab assignment after the first week of the regular season, according to the Boston Globe. He underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in March.

Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 3/17, 9:20 AM CT
Julio Lugo's arthroscopic surgery on his injured right knee was deemed successful by Dr. Thomas Gill, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: He is expected to be on the shelf for a month while recovering. Jed Lowrie will be the starting shortstop for opening day, but Lugo could still push him for playing time if he can bounce back healthy.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 3/15, 10:51 AM CT
The Providence Journal has confirmed that shortstop Julio Lugo will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday to determine the extent of the damage caused by a torn meniscus.

Our View: The team does not yet have a timetable for his return, but recovery from such an injury, depending on its severity, can take anywhere from a few weeks to a matter of months. Seeing this, it appears now that Jed Lowrie is the man for the Sox at shortstop.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 3/14, 7:01 PM CT
The Boston Globe reports that Julio Lugo will return to Boston on Tuesday and may undergo arthroscopic knee surgery for a torn meniscus. The procedure would sideline him for at least a month.

Our View: Lugo had been hitting .450 this spring in his attempt to win the opening day shortstop job. However, it appears likely that he will be out until mid-April to May if he has the surgery.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 3/14, 10:21 AM CT
Updating an earlier report, Julio Lugo may have a meniscus tear in his right knee, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: His MRI results are still being examined, and the club should have a better idea regarding his injury later today.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 3/14, 8:47 AM CT
Julio Lugo underwent an MRI on his right knee due to soreness, according to the Boston Globe. Skipper Terry Francona said, "What happened, he was complaining of right knee soreness when he went out in the first inning (of Friday's game). So when we got him, we took him out for precautionary measures."

Our View: Lugo was dealing with slight pain for a few days, but did not become serious until Friday. The results of the MRI are yet to be revealed. Lugo cannot afford a setback while in a tight race with Jed Lowrie for the starting gig at shortstop.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 3/8, 6:47 PM CT
Julio Lugo was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate Sunday and drove in two runs in Boston's 8-2 win over Tampa Bay.

Our View: Lugo would appear to be in line to start ahead of Jed Lowrie at shortstop, though it remains to be seen exactly how the playing time situation will break down with the duo rendering both as less than ideal selections in mixed leagues at this point.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 3/3, 9:05 AM CT
Julio Lugo is dealing with a stomach virus and will sit out today's game, according to the Providence Journal. Skipper Terry Francona is hoping he has food poisoning and not the flu.

Our View: Lugo cannot afford to miss much time with Jed Lowrie pushing him for the starting gig at shortstop.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 2/28, 10:36 PM CT
Julio Lugo said that he feels 100 percent and he looked it on Saturday, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

Our View: Lugo could win Boston's starting shortstop job if he continues to play like this. We'll keep you posted.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 2/28, 8:46 AM CT
Julio Lugo, who battled a quad ailment last season, stated that he feels 100 percent again, according to the Boston Globe. He said, "I am a little sore right now. But I am fine. It is just because I have not played baseball, that is all."

Our View: Lugo is competing with Jed Lowrie for the starting gig at shortstop. Lugo has little power, but could be a decent source for stolen bases if he wins the job.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 2/22, 8:09 PM CT
Should Julio Lugo lose out to Jed Lowrie in the battle to be the starting shortstop for the Red Sox, he may ask for a trade, according to the AP. "This is a business," said Lugo. "You want to be where people want you. That's it. If I don't get traded it's because (the Red Sox) want me."

Our View: Lugo hit just .268 in only half a season in 2008. A spot in the outfield has also been ruled out for Lugo should he not win the starting shortstop job, so.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 2/17, 2:34 PM CT
Manager Terry Francona noted that Julio Lugo will not be considered for a role in the outfield is he loses to Jed Lowrie for the starting job at shortstop, according to the Boston Globe.

Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 2/16, 8:39 AM CT
Julio Lugo, who battled a strained quad last season, believes he is 100 percent healthy, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: This is good news for Lugo as he gears up to compete with Jed Lowrie for Boston's starting gig at shortstop. He has good speed but needs to perform better defensively and be more selective at the plate.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 1/18, 1:04 PM CT
The Boston Globe reports that Julio Lugo opted out of Winter Ball to work on his conditioning, and he has reportedly put on 20 pounds of muscle. He appears to be serious about competing with Jed Lowrie for the starting shortstop position in Boston.

Our View: Lugo will be given a shot to win this job, but he will have to show better defense and plate discipline this spring if he wants to beat out Lowrie. He is a career .271 hitter with plus speed.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 12/11, 7:51 AM CT
The Red Sox and Diamondbacks have been discussing a deal of Julio Lugo for Josh Byrnes, according to ESPN.

Our View: Byrnes would provide favorable depth as Boston's fourth outfielder and Julio Lugo would be the top candidate to replace Orlando Hudson at second base in Arizona.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 12/9, 10:53 AM CT
Red Sox GM Theo Epstein said shortstop Julio Lugo's strained left quad had improved to the point where he would have been able to play in the World Series, according to the Boston Herald. If he isn’t dealt, manager Terry Francona indicated he hasn’t figured out how he will utilize Lugo and Jed Lowrie next season.

Our View: Lugo is expected to begin play in the Dominican League next week. His return to action would benefit the Sox’ ability to trade him. He hit .268 in 82 games last season.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 11/27, 11:22 AM CT
Julio Lugo may not be traded to the Tigers after all, according to the Boston Herald. He was originally thought to be heading to Detroit in exchange for either Dontrelle Willis or Nate Robertson, but the deal has stalled and is unlikely to happen at best.

Our View: Lugo didn't have any fantasy value in 2008 as he only batted .268 with one home run and 22 RBI. He also only had 12 steals in 16 attempts, so his contribution to fantasy owners' running game was negligible as well.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 11/16, 8:47 AM CT
The Boston Globe reports that the Tigers are thinking about a deal that would send Dontrelle Willis or Nate Robertson to Boston for Julio Lugo, but salary issues must be resolved first.

Our View: All three players are coming off of poor 2008 seasons, and the Tigers have a need at shortstop after letting Edgar Renteria walk.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 10/5, 9:14 AM CT
According to the Boston Globe, the Red Sox will try to move Julio Lugo this off-season.

Our View: This is not surprising considering the emergence of Jed Lowrie. The Red Sox would probably have to pick up some salary to move the high-priced shortstop, but there will probably be several teams interested.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 9/23, 7:40 AM CT
Julio Lugo met with a team doctor Monday, but nothing new has been revealed regarding his strained left quad, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Manager Terry Francona noted that his ailment has not progressed to the point where he is near being activated.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 9/21, 12:15 PM CT

Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 9/20, 9:54 AM CT
It does not seem likely that Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo will be able to get back on the field before the regular season has concluded, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Lugo is suffering from a strained left quad, and though he is working diligently, time is not on his side. Fantasy owners should look elsewhere instead of waiting for his return.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 9/17, 8:10 AM CT
Julio Lugo worked out again Tuesday in his bid to return from the strained quadriceps he sustained shortly before the All-Star break, according to the Boston Globe. He swung during early batting practice and took more ground balls, working more on lateral movement. He believes he is at 75 percent and added, "I'm feeling better. I'm starting to feel comfortable again. It's getting better. We put a little a more pressure yesterday and today."

Our View: Lugo remains hopeful to return by the end of the season. He only hit .268 this season with one homer, but held decent fantasy value for larger AL-only leagues with 12 steals.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 9/14, 10:34 AM CT
The Boston Globe reports Lugo (quad) took ground balls at shortstop and ran sprints on Saturday.

Our View: He is hoping to return before the end of the season.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 9/13, 4:41 PM CT
Julio Lugo, who is recovering from a strained left quad, took batting practice Saturday for the first time since sustaining the injury shortly before the All-Star break, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: He knows he is running against the clock, but is hopeful to return before the end of the season with only around two weeks to go.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 9/12, 7:19 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Julio Lugo ran at 65 percent on Friday while recovering from a strained left quad that has had him out since July 11. He remains several days away from being activated. "I had no pain swinging," said Lugo. "I'm making a lot of progress. I know I can hit. I don't feel any pain there. I just have to get my mobility now."

Our View: The Sox could use him. His replacement, Jed Lowrie, has struggled lately. The rookie switch-hitter is hitting .200 over his previous 21 games, and 8-for-41 in the past 12 games.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 9/9, 7:50 PM CT
Julio Lugo is not close to returning from the strained left quad which has kept him out since July 11. "He's got a ways to go," manager Terry Francona informs MLB.com. "This is kind of fighting an uphill battle. It's not getting any easier, and that's not because of his effort. His effort's been great. It's getting a little tight."

Our View: Jed Lowire has done a solid job as the everyday shortstop, and Lugo probably wouldn't take his spot back even if he was healthy.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 8/25, 9:15 AM CT
Julio Lugo is scheduled for an MRI today in Boston, according to the Boston Globe. He is on the DL with a strained left quad.

Our View: The team has yet to disclose the severity of his ailment, but should be able to do so following the MRI.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 8/20, 6:41 PM CT
Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo's hope of an early September return took a considerable blow on Wednesday, when he pulled his left quadriceps during some afternoon running, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Lugo severely strained the quad on July 11 while running out a grounder and had recently made significant progress. On Monday, Lugo took batting practice for the first time since suffering the injury and even speculated he could go on a Minor League rehab assignment at some point next week. The Red Sox are not reporting how serious this new injury may be, but when we get that update, we'll pass it along to you.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 8/19, 5:28 PM CT
Julio Lugo continues to make positive progress as he returns from a tear in his left quad. Manager Terry Francona informs the Providence Journal that the optimistic timetable has Lugo beginning a minor league rehab assignment within the next week.

Our View: With Jed Lowrie hitting well, there's no guarantee that Lugo will get his job back when he is healthy. It sounds like September 1 would be roughly the earliest we might see Julio back in the bigs.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 8/18, 9:12 PM CT
Julio Lugo was able to take some swings in the batting cage Monday for the first time since severely straining his left quad on July 11, according to MLB.com. "It feels good," said Lugo. "It took me a little [to get to this point]. I was stiff and hurting. Right now, I'm not feeling any pain. It feels good to be back in the hitting motion."

Our View: Lugo thinks he could go on a rehab assignment in about a week, and a Sept. 1 return date is realistic.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 8/18, 4:58 PM CT
Julio Lugo is progressing well from his quad injury, according to the Providence Journal. He was sprinting in the outfield at Camden Yards before Monday's game and was also scheduled to take batting practice for the first time since injuring his leg on July 12. "He's done a pretty good job," said manager Terry Francona. "He had a pretty good tear. He did it up pretty good and he's worked hard."

Our View: Lugo still probably won't be back before September, and with the way Jed Lowrie has played, they won't rush him back.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 8/13, 11:11 AM CT
Julio Lugo is making progress in his recovery from a strained left quad, but the Boston Herald states that he is unlikely to return before September.

Our View: Lugo will need a lengthy rehab assignment in the minors prior to being activated from the DL. Jed Lowrie will continue to fill in at shortstop.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 8/12, 5:29 PM CT
Boston infielder Julio Lugo is on the road to recover from his strained left quad and has begun taking grounders and getting on the field, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: There is still no timetable for Lugo's return, but it sounds like he will be back sooner rather than later. His speed makes him a decent play in AL-only leagues.

The Providence Journal indicates that Julio Lugo is running again for the first time since straining his left quad. He said, "It feels good. It's coming along."

Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 7/14, 12:58 PM CT
Julio Lugo, who could miss 4-6 weeks due to his strained left quad, is expected to begin rehabbing after the break, according to the Boston Globe.

Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 7/12, 5:40 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, the Red Sox are now reporting that injured shortstop Julio Lugo will miss between 4 and 6 weeks of action, suffering a severe quad tear, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: He suffered the injury in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Orioles Friday night at Fenway Park. Lugo was attempting to beat out a base hit when he felt a "pop" and after he crossed the first-base bag, he was in obvious pain as he lay on the ground. After the game a team doctor told him it was a tear, but the shortstop didn't believe it, so he had an MRI taken this morning that confirmed the bad news. As a result, Jed Lowrie has been recalled from Pawtucket.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 7/12, 2:57 PM CT
Julio Lugo has been placed on the 15-day DL due to his strained right quad, according to the AP.

Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 7/12, 2:45 PM CT
Updating a previous report, Julio Lugo is scheduled for an MRI on his injured right quad Saturday, according to the Boston Globe. Lugo said, "I'm real worried. Because I know it wasn't something that just pulled, when you pull a muscle. I felt something that popped, and that's what worries me."

Our View: Jed Lowrie was recalled as a possible replacement for Lugo in case he needs to spend time on the DL. We will keep you posted on Lugo's status.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 7/12, 9:28 AM CT
Julio Lugo sustained a left quad injury while beating out a base hit during Friday night action, according to the Providence Journal. Manager Terry Francona said, "I think he did it pretty good. We’ll get him looked at today but I think there’s a chance that he just didn’t strain this."

Our View: Altough the team is yet to make an announcement, it is likely he suffered a slight tear, which will require a trip to the DL.

Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 6/21, 1:12 PM CT
Julio Lugo made two more errors in Friday's loss to the Cardinals and will ride the pine today, according to the Providence Journal. Alex Cora will get the start at shortstop.

Our View: Lugo is hitting a favorable .278, but continues to irk the club with 16 errors, which is the most by any American League shortstop.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 6/20, 11:07 PM CT
Julio Lugo Went 1-for-2 with two RBI on Friday night in part because of his first home run of the year off of Kyle Lohse.

Our View: Lugo now has a hit in 5-straight games as he continues to provide a decent bat toward the end of the Sox lineup. He only has nine steals after swiping 33 bags last season, so his owners are certainly hopeful that the second half will offer more than a hollow .278 average.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 6/14, 2:11 PM CT
Julio Lugo was a late scratch on Saturday afternoon due to an upset stomach, the Boston Globe reports. Alex Cora will start in his place.

Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 5/16, 4:02 PM CT
Julio Lugo is back in the lineup for the Red Sox on Friday after missing a few games due to a minor concussion, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: The Sox are a better offensive team with Lugo in the lineup flashing his speed, though how in the world he has scored only 10 runs in 35 games is beyond us.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 5/14, 12:52 PM CT
Julio Lugo is out again on Wednesday due to a concussion, and he will be examined by team doctors in Boston on Thursday, the Boston Globe reports. Alex Cora is starting in his place.

Our View: We hope this is a case of the Sox being overly protective and not something where the symptoms aren't going away as hoped.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 5/13, 4:50 PM CT
Julio Lugo will miss at least one more game on Tuesday due to a mild concussion leaving Alex Cora to make the start, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: The team hopes to have Lugo back any day now, and while they don't lose much on defense with Cora, their offense certainly could use Lugo's speed.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 5/12, 12:49 PM CT
Julio Lugo's CT scan came back negative, according to the Boston Globe. Manager Terry Francona noted that doesn't necessarily mean the shortstop doesn't have a concussion, it just means that if he has one, it's not a particularly bad one. Francona added, "His eyes were kind of glassy, glazed over a little bit yesterday. He certainly looks a lot clearer today."

Our View: Lugo will have to be cleared by the team's medical staff to return to the field.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 5/11, 10:08 AM CT

Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 4/21, 2:10 PM CT
Julio Lugo went 4-for-4 with a double, two runs, an RBI, a walk, and a steal in Monday's win over the Rangers.

Our View: Lugo owns a seven-game hitting streak and has pushed his average up from .238 to .314 during that span. He'll need to keep hitting if he hopes to keep Jed Lowrie at bay.
Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 4/20, 6:36 PM CT
Boston shortstop Julio Lugo played left field in the ninth inning of Sunday's win over Texas, his first outfield appearance with the Red Sox and first since August 2006 with the Dodgers.

Our View: Lugo has the ability to be a versatile asset for Boston, but his defense has been suspect during April. He leads all American League shortstops in errors this spring, six in total in just 18 games.

Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 3/10, 6:36 PM CT
Julio Lugo's injured back will keep him out of action for a least a couple more days and there is growing concern that he will not be ready to go on opening day, this according to MLB.com. "I think when Lugo tried to play that one day, I think he overdid it a little bit and set himself back," manager Terry Francona said. "So we need to sit on it a little bit." Lugo figures to be greatly undervalued this season given this injury and his .237 average last season, but he remains a solid source of SB with an average of 32 bags the past three seasons.

I'm not saying that's good, but that's frustration," Francona said. "But if you are asking me if I care about that, yeah." Francona said Lugo will likely start Wednesday.
